  Description : recover data from damaged storage devices

File data recovery software designed to recover lost files including
video, documents and archives from Hard Disks and CDRom and lost
pictures (thus, its 'Photo Recovery' name) from digital camera memory.
PhotoRec ignores the filesystem and goes after the underlying data, so
it will still work even if your media's filesystem has been severely
damaged or re-formatted.

Bug#465369: ITP: golearn -- Debian educational browser

Dear Jonas,

hi congrats for this brilliant idea. Just checked out goplay - and
this is a nice approach. However I wonder if it is wise to fork
goplay: as there are several points of possible enhancement regarding
either programme go{play|learn}. If it is not much more than swapping
debtags: why not introduce a compile switch that allows to build both
applications from the same source repo?

BTW: Are screenshots taken from some distant server? Or are they stored
locally - whatever amount of packages you install?

With kindest regards
Ralf.

This has been discussed - and even worked on - already. Please read the
full conversation contained in this bugreport:

The screenshots are currently contained in the Debian package
games-thumbnails

If/when goplay becomes more general in scope, I believe it makes good
sense to rename it to eg. gogo, and then also rename that other package
to either gogo-common or program-thumbnails.

Bug#462631: current status

2008-02-17 Thread Ondrej Certik
Hi Francesco,

On Thu, Feb 07, 2008 at 12:23:00AM +0100, Francesco Poli wrote:
 Hi!

 Thanks for your ITP bug regarding Paraview!
 I hope the packaging is going on well.

You can see for yourself. Our svn is here:

XS-Vcs-Svn: svn://svn.debian.org/svn/pkg-scicomp/paraview/
XS-Vcs-Browser: http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/pkg-scicomp/paraview/

We welcome any help with the packaging.

 I wonder if you managed to link Paraview against (and make it work
 properly with) libraries already packaged and included in Debian.

Not yet. Currently we are still trying to make it compile on i386 and
amd64 together with MPI and python. We just succeeded in the compilation
itself, so at least the package builds now.

Unfortunately, the python scripting still isn't working at runtime. When
this is fixed, only then we'll try to build shared libraries and reuse
as much as possible from Debian to reduce the sice of the paraview
binary package (currently 100MB).

 Last time I checked, it seemed Paraview could not be linked with
 already installed libraries (without applying heavy modifications).
 I think that, from a maintainability/code-duplication point of view,
 shipping a special copy of VTK and TclTk just for Paraview would
 not be acceptable. Unfortunately though, last time I checked,
Paraview
 shipped with special versions of those libraries that had to be
 recompiled:
 http://public.kitware.com/pipermail/paraview/2006-October/003881.html

 I hope the situation has improved in the meanwhile: for instance,
 Paraview was going to switch from TclTk to Qt and it seems this
 transition has already been completed... Is it now possible to easily
 link Paraview against an already installed copy of VTK?

I don't know, we didn't try it yet.

 Or did you modify CMakeLists.txt in order to let Paraview compile and
 link against debianized VTK?

Not yet. First we need to make it work with all the features.
If you would like to help us, it'd be awesome. Feel free to join the

http://wiki.debian.org/Teams/DebianScientificComputingTeam

where the package is maintained.

Ondrej

Hi Jonas, thank you very much for directing me to the BTS - admittedly I
only followed the thread that was mirrored by deb-dev mailing list.

I am quite sure you are aware of debtags-edit that allows browsing any
kind of packages - without the screenshots (but you can add tags).

It's great to follow the cooperative discussion on how to reuse code in
a work-saving way. Just two more of my pence:

1 - How about using online resources for screenshots, including the
option to upload missing ones? Local/static files seem to be
inappropriate here to me.

2 - As for naming: GoGo vs. GoPlay vs. GoLearn: The latter might be a
registered trademark - there is golearn.{gov|de|com} already. GoGo is
in my eyes even less suggestive as GoPlay (which could be a good name
for educational software, too). At some day the project might consider
yet another name that is easy to remember, suggestive, and yet unique.
E.g. CoFOSS = Catalogue of Free and Open Source Software or Debcat
etc.

Kind regards - and keep it going (I am about to check out your debs now)
Ralf

Sure.

I consider debtags-edit a tool for developers to edit debtags.

GoPlay/GoLearn is a tool for users to browse available programs.

An important and valuable limitation of Go* is that you can't edit
anything which means you can't break anything. That helps some users
feel comfortable exploring.

And please don't raise the argument of users should be capable of
exploring in a choice-ful environment too as was brought up on d-edu
recently[1]: They are most welcome to use more capable (and geeky) tools
like debtags-edit instead.

But I suspect that you actually agree with me on that, just raising the
point as others are reading this too :-)

1 - How about using online resources for screenshots, including the

Good idea - as an extension.

Debian has an interesting policy of requiring all packages to be
self-contained. Or more specifically, no package install must depend on
external resources. Puting the screenshots at an external location means
you could not see those graphics at installations with low bandwidth to
the Internet (like many places in the 3rd world).

Please file a wishlist bugreport against games-screenshots to preserve
that idea: This bugreport concerns the packaging of goplay, which I
probably won't do anyway, so this bugreport will be closed soon.

Bug#466286: O: sylpheed-claws -- Extended version of the Sylpheed mail client

2008-02-17 Thread Ricardo Mones
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

The sylpheed-claws package is orphaned now. It has been unsupported by
upstream since ages, and I feel it should have been removed from the
archive time ago, but given it's popularity maybe somebody wants to
take care of it. Current sylpheed-claws users are encouraged to migrate
to Claws Mail, for which the sylpheed-claws description also applies and
even more.

The package description is:
 Sylpheed Claws is an extended version of the Sylpheed mail
 client which has the most advanced features designed to be included
 in Sylpheed. It features the same features Sylpheed does:
  * Very good performance
  * Easy configuration and operation
  * Multiple accounts
  * High flexibility
 .
 And more:
  * Better mail/news composing handling;
  * More advanced ways of handling headers and attachments;
  * More powerful handling of MIME types.
  * Per-folder default reply-to address and threading mode
configuration;
  * Pixmap theming

Bug#304570: ITP takeover?

2008-02-17 Thread Erick Mattos
Hello David,

I am the owner of the ITP and I had been trying to add Code::Blocks to
Debian repositories.
I had created the packages more than once but always having to change
something to fulfill mentor's demands. When everything was looking like it
would be finally solved then Code::Blocks team started to use the new
updated version of wxWidgets 2.8 which is not in the repositories. I had
tried to ask the maintainer of the previous versions for a new version but
he told me he wasn't in accordance that the new version was really stable
and that he was not intending to add it to the repositories and that he
thought it was better to wait for a version 3.0 of wxWidgets which was
planned to be released on last January.
After talking to a debian developer friend of mine for councils he argued to
me that it is not a good policy to build the uptodate version of wxWidgets
passing over the previous maintainer opinions and that he thought it would
be a good idea to wait for him to update wxWidgets before packaging
Code::Blocks again.
Afterwards I realized that:

   - the point-of-view of wxWidgets maintainer should be respected;
   - Code::Blocks is not really a stable software for now although I am
   using it anyway;
   - I do not intend to fork their work to make Code::Blocks compatible
   to the previous version wxWidgets 2.6;
   - I had been talking to the Code::Blocks creator and he thinks it will
   be better to package it after the release of 1.0 stable version.

Then I was forced to wait for this situation to be cleared up into any
direction before continuing the work and to accept that Debian distro really
gets stuck some times if some dependecies could not be satisfied by
community or even by one's point-of-view.
I have uploaded a lot of packages to debian mentors and the
first-before-last package is still available there so if you want you can
see it by yourself.
If you would like, I can forward all my communications to all of the people
involved.

Best regards,
Erick Mattos.

Bug#304570: ITP takeover?

2008-02-17 Thread David Paleino
Il giorno Sun, 17 Feb 2008 16:30:28 -0300

 would be finally solved then Code::Blocks team started to use the new

I just realized that after sending my reply to that ITP :(

 I had tried to ask the maintainer of the previous versions for a new version
 but he told me he wasn't in accordance that the new version was really stable
 and that he was not intending to add it to the repositories and that he
 thought it was better to wait for a version 3.0 of wxWidgets which was
 planned to be released on last January.

Can't we propose him to upload it to experimental? That wouldn't hurt unstable
(thus also testing -- and stable) users, but we could still have Code::Blocks
inside Debian repositories.

 After talking to a debian developer friend of mine for councils he argued to
 me that it is not a good policy to build the uptodate version of wxWidgets

Fully agree w.r.t. respecting upstream's decisions (ando also other
maintainers')

 Then I was forced to wait for this situation to be cleared up into any
 direction before continuing the work and to accept that Debian distro really
 gets stuck some times if some dependecies could not be satisfied by
 community or even by one's point-of-view.

Again, why don't you propose it for experimental?

 I have uploaded a lot of packages to debian mentors and the
 first-before-last package is still available there so if you want you can
 see it by yourself.

I'm currently using packages provided by the Code::Blocks team itself, plus the
wxWidgets from wxwidgets.org:

deb http://jens.lody.name/debian/ any main
deb-src http://jens.lody.name/debian/ any main
deb http://apt.wxwidgets.org/ etch-wx main

 If you would like, I can forward all my communications to all of the people
 involved.

Sure: I've changed netzmeister to Matthias Gutmann [EMAIL PROTECTED]
(which is the real name / address).
Before your reply we were planning on team-maintaining Code::Blocks -- if it
was the case. What do you think about this? (again: I'm talking about an
experimental package -- not unstable as its dependencies wouldn't be satisfied
in Debian at the moment)

Kindly,
David

Bug#200715: Status: ITP: stepmania -- rythm and dancing game

2008-02-17 Thread Christoph Berg

 2008/2/15, Christoph Berg [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
  # Orphaning the ITP - Sesse, Baby, please grab it if you think it
   # will eventually be packageable

 Any special reason why you're giving it up?

On inspection of Andrew's packages (in fact, one, last upload 2003) I
had come to the conclusion he was MIA. I then orphaned the ITP along
with the package. There's nothing wrong with the ITP as such, it
should just be owned by someone who's actually working on it.

Sorry, should have been more verbose.

Bug#465369: GoLearn

2008-02-17 Thread Enrico Zini
On Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 05:46:36AM +0100, Jonas Smedegaard wrote:

 I suggest now a different approach that fulfills our needs without
 multiple applications:
   4. Implement an --ftags option similar to that in ept-tags

Done and committed: give it a try. For kicks, I also implemented
--secondary=facet to choose the facet to use instead of 'interface'.

Note: --ftags can be a comma-separated list of tags, that will be ANDed:
this means that you can do this, which is probably what you want:

goplay --go=field --ftags=use::learning, role::program

I've just run that: the result is really nice! Your idea seems to
nicely hit the spot.

 I believe it would then also make sense to either use a more generic
 facet than gaming by default or make the --facet option required, and
 rename the tool and the dependent games-thumbnails package. But that is
 just cosmetics.

Note that goplay is written by the gnome game team, so not having gaming
as a default would be a bit of a shame :)

Also, if you require --facet, you can't just click and run the program,
which takes half of the ease away. However, anyone's welcome to make a
godebian program that shows like 6 big stilish icons one with every
direction you'd like to go, and by clicking on an icon goplay is
launched with the right options.

The idea we discussed with Miriam, though, was something like to store a
number of preset defaults inside the program, and choose them based on
the program name. That way you can, for example, run it as 'golearn'
and it will choose a different set of defaults.

Turns out that this was rather easy to implement as well, so I did it.
I took advantage of the opportunity for, in case of golearn, use as
--ftags something like: use::learning  (role::program ||
role::documentation).

I've looked around at the available facets, and I implemented this list
of possible alternate names, all of which are implemented:

   goadmin
   golearn
   gonet
   gooffice
   goplay
   gosafe
   goweb

Please try it out: does it do what you want?

btw, should we reassign this bug to goplay, for filing purpose?

Ciao,

Enrico

Bug#466336: O: ikvm -- Java virtual machine/compiler implemented in .NET (Mono)

2008-02-17 Thread Dave Beckett
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I intend to orphan the ikvm package.

To any future maintainer:

There are lots of packaging problems that ikvm 0.36.0.5 have
including needing extra source packages, plus licensing concerns of
combining OpenJDK, Classpath and IKVM code, some of which is only
available in unreleased software. A complete pain I'd imagine.

ikvm is a b*gger to build and regularly fails when the mono
toolchain changes (which is often). It also fails to build on
many architectures.

Good luck.
