Bug#480092: ITP: linbox -- Library for exact linear algebra

2008-05-21 Thread Timothy G Abbott

I'd be willing to maintain the package until you have time.

I spent a while working on improving the linbox package in my repository.
I've updated my package to use the shared library that Linbox now has.
It now has no lintian warnings other than an extra license file; I
generated a man page with

help2man -n tool for linking against LinBox linbox-config

though probably it would be best if the code to do that generation were in
upstream LinBox. I should email the LinBox team regardless, since the
documentation doesn't build because it tries to install HACKING, which
apparently doesn't exist anymore.

However, in order for LinBox to be useful for SAGE we'll need to either
package linbox_wrap for debian or wait until linbox_wrap gets into
mainline LinBox. Because Lenny is freezing in a few weeks, there isn't
much time for this.

The other problem I have at the moment is that both givaro and linbox try
to install /usr/include/gmp++/gmp++_int.inl and friends, but the versions
they install are slightly different. I'm not sure what the story is with
that; but it seems like they are originally from Givaro; I'll send an
email to the LinBox mailing list about this when I get a chance.

 Hi,

Just before creating an ITP, I saw this RFP... My research team is
already involved with linbox and next year we should work on it a lot.
So, I would be pleased to help to integrate linbox in Debian.
I plan to create a git repo on alioth (in the maint-collab project)
to work on the packaging (starting with your work). Any co-maintainers
are welcome.
Please, note however that, probably, I will not be able to work on
linbox until a few weeks. So, if you expect linbox to be uploaded before
lenny freeze, another maintainer is needed.

 Best regards,
   Vincent

Hi.

Any update on that package's adoption ?

Looks like it may not be ready for lenny from looking at the PTS :(

I'd like to keep using synergy on my Debian.

Thanks for letting us know.

Hi!

Hendrik Frenzel wrote:
 Hi Sven,

i just stumbled over your ITP for nagios-pnp and want to ask how is the
state of tha package. Do you need help developing or testing it?

I should be in a good shape - I think I'll put the package online on my
web server and put the debian/ direcotry in pkg-nagios.alioth.debian.org
SVN today.

Another question, why do you call this package nagios-pnp not
pnp4nagios as it states on the upstream page?

The first name of it was PNP - but there was no domain and sf.net
project name available. So Jörg called the project and domain
pnp4nagios, the logo states pnp4nagios but on the documentation web
pages he calls it PNP. I asked him but didn't get an answer - maybe
he's on holiday.

Contains the list of known-bad OpenSSL keys for openssl-vulnkey to use when
 examining suspect keys.

The Ubuntu openssl maintainers released a openssl-blacklist equivalent
to the openssh-blacklist package. It includes a blacklist with
compromised openssl key hashes and a program with a openssl-vulnkey
program suitable to test your openssl key files.

I think it would be a good think to coordinate the work between debian
and ubuntu and to incorporate this package into debian main.

2008-05-21 Thread Vincent Danjean
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Vincent Danjean [EMAIL PROTECTED]

WARNING: mapping between CPAN packages and Debian packages changed
All maintainer of rdepends on the old libtext-csv-perl are in CC of this
mail. Please, read all this mail.

* Package name: libtext-csv-perl
  Version : 1.05
Upstream Author : Alan Citterman and Makamaka Hannyaharamitu
* URL : http://search.cpan.org/dist/Text-CSV/
* License : Perl (GPL+Artistic)
  Programming Lang: Perl
Description : comma-separated values manipulator (using XS or PurePerl)

Text::CSV provides facilities for the composition and decomposition of
comma-separated values. An instance of the Text::CSV class can combine
fields into a CSV string and parse a CSV string into fields.
 .
The module accepts either strings or files as input and can utilize any
user-specified characters as delimiters, separators, and escapes so it is
perhaps better called ASV (anything separated values) rather than just CSV.
 .
To work, Text::CSV can use either Text::CSV_PP (a Pure Perl module present in
this package) or Text::CSV_XS (a XS module, thus optimised, provided by the
 libtext-csv-xs-perl package).

Explainations:
All of this follows a discussion on the pkg-perl-maintainers ML. The
goal is to follow upstream and remove Debian specific patches.

From this version, this Debian package (libtext-csv-perl) will contain
  the perl CPAN package Text::CSV.
Before this version, this Debian package (libtext-csv-perl) contained
  the perl CPAN package Text::CSV_XS.
From now, Text::CSV_XS will be packaged in the debian package
  libtext-csv-xs-perl.

Text::CSV is a generic perl package that can call Text::CSV_XS if available.
Indeed, Text::CSV_XS provides a optimized version of Text::CSV routines.

The old libtext-csv-perl (with Text::CSV_XS) had a patch to provide the
Text::CSV interface. So replacing the old patched Text::CSV_XS by the
new Text::CSV (ie only upgrading this 'libtext-csv-perl' package) should
works. However, you are strongly encouraged to install the new
libtext-csv-xs-perl package (recommended by this package) to keep previous
  performancies.

Maintainers of rdepends package of libtext-csv-perl should check if
their package still work with this new package but without
libtext-csv-xs-perl (with, of course, degraded performances).
If not, please add a new dependency on your packages to
libtext-csv-xs-perl (but keep libtext-csv-perl is you want to have to
Text::CSV interface) and tell me so that I can add a conflict with your
old versions.
You can of course also add a dependency to libtext-csv-xs-perl if you
want to ensure good performencies but I will not add a conflict if there
is only degraded performencies.

These two new packages will be available on my webpage[1,2] this
evening (when I will get this ITP number).

Bug#482293: libSOIL Copyright

2008-05-21 Thread Christoph Egger
Hi

I am working on getting libsfml http://www.sfml-dev.org, which uses your
libsoil, into the debian distribution.

Looking at your Sources and the package you distribute at
http://www.lonesock.net/soil.html it is unclear if the library is Public
Domain or, following the statment of your software section, MIT (or something
completely different).

Can you please tell me which License applies to libsoil? (Consider stating it in
the sources, too, please)

Hey, sorry about that. My license of choice is MIT, but since
stb_image was in Public Domain, SOIL is also in the Public Domain. I
will try to include notices in the source, as you suggest, by the next

2008-05-21 Thread Frederic Lehobey
Hi Vincent,

Thanks a lot for your feedback. A first round of answers.

Vincent Bernat [EMAIL PROTECTED] (2008-05-21 22:03:52) :
OoO En cette nuit nuageuse du jeudi 15 mai 2008, vers 01:02, Frederic

I know this. I left them in the purpose of building backports, but I
can remove them and add them only in the backport. I will remove them
then.

Moreover, php5 depends on libapache2-mod-php5. You can
 drop Suggests too.

  Ok. Thanks.

I don't know if the content of artichow/php4 could
 be dropped too.

  Probably, yes.

You short description is very short. You may want to complete it a
bit. You should add a blank line in the long description.

  Ok. Will fix these.

About debian/copyright, you cannot ship files using PHP License 2.02 or
PHP License 3.0. This will be rejected by ftp-master.

That is what I feared at first (see #442361), but I found other
packages (like php-html-common,
http://packages.debian.org/changelogs/pool/main/p/php-html-common/current/copyright,
php-net-socket, php-xml-parser [3.0], all of which are in my
dependencies) that are under PHP License 2.02 and already included in
the archive.

 You seem to not
ship most of those files but you still ship QuickForm. For other files,
you should add a notice in debian/copyright that the files are not
 shipped with the package.

Very precisely, currently, the files of the dependencies _are_ in
upstream tarball (and in the source package), but not _used_ by my
package (using Debian packages instead). Do you mean I should remove
all those files from upstream tarball and create some repackaged
phpmyvisites.dfsg upstream sources?

For QuickForm, does QuickForm2 is an acceptable drop-in replacement?

Not tried it yet. Upstream is
http://pear.php.net/package/HTML_QuickForm2 but from what I have read
(sorry I do not have the link at hand) it _seems_ that not, but I
should try then if the license problems really get in the way.

You should use dbconfig-common to configure database. This is not very
difficult and there is a lot of packages using it.

Yes, I am willing to do it, but (as I said in README.Debian) I fear
it will require quite heavy patching of upstream (there is an
installation procedure quite intricately included in the rest of the
code) and I am undecided about what would be the best way to do it. Do
you have some example of other packages PHP where only _parts_ of the
installation procedure has been diverted in order to take advantage of
dbconfig-common?

Should I completely rewrite an other installation procedure from
scratch with _many_ debconf questions and templates (won't it be a
debconf abuse?)? (I think it might be much simpler to implement.)

  You could also ship
Apache configuration in/etc/apache2/conf.d (with a debconf
 question).

Yes, if I go using debconf, I can do this too.

You can look at other web apps for some source of inspiration
on this matter (mediawiki, roundcube, ...) or at the webapps draft
 policy.

Thanks again for your feedback. I will try to address all your
suggestions (the license problem, I fear, been the most problematic
one) and come back with an updated package.

Best regards,
Frédéric Lehobey
PS : I have fulfilled your Mail-Followup-To, but should
dbconfig-common questions go to -mentors, -webapps or both? (I do not
want to bother people). :-)

Bug#418889: Nouveau packaging

2008-05-21 Thread Christopher James Halse Rogers
I'm RAOF, maintainer of the Ubuntu PPA mentioned earlier. I've recently
changed the libdrm package in my PPA to produce a module-assistant using
drm-modules-source package, which might make inclusion in experimental a
bit easier.

Speaking with upstream, they very much do not want the 3d portion
shipped at all, anywhere. It doesn't just need a git snapshot of mesa,
it needs a git snapshot of a branch of the experimental gallium-0.1
branch of mesa. Accordingly, I don't ship the 3d portion in my PPA, and
it would be courteous to not ship it in experimental.

I'd be happy to help push to experimental, but I don't currently have a
bare-metal Sid install, so driver testing is a little difficult!

php-net-socket, php-xml-parser [3.0], all of which are in my
dependencies) that are under PHP License 2.02 and already included in
 the archive.

I don't remember exactly how this is handled, but those licenses are
accepted only for PHP, as per REJECT FAQ:
 http://ftp-master.debian.org/REJECT-FAQ.html

I suppose that the packages you cite were here before this
statement. There are bugs filed in this case. For example, for
php-net-socket:
 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=332616
(not a very active bug)

This is quite unfair that already packaged packages can keep the
problematic PHP license and that new softwares are automatically
rejected on this basis. You might ask on debian-legal if the situation
has somewhat evolved on this situation.

 You seem to not
ship most of those files but you still ship QuickForm. For other files,
you should add a notice in debian/copyright that the files are not

No, those files are allowed to be distributed freely. Just add a note
(above the license) to tell that those files are not shipped in binary
packages. Otherwise, ftp-master might be a bit quick to reject the
package.

You should use dbconfig-common to configure database. This is not very

I do it for text-pattern: I just create the empty database and let the
installation scripts (a bit patched) do the remaining. This is quite
intrusive and difficult to maintain: textpattern was also trying to
create the database. Since this is not the case for phpmyvisites, you
can try to just create an empty database with dbconfig-common and let
phpmyvisites handle the remaining installation procedure.

PS : I have fulfilled your Mail-Followup-To, but should
dbconfig-common questions go to -mentors, -webapps or both? (I do not

Well, mentors is a good place for all kind of questions. And webapps is
a good place too since we are talking about a webapp.
