A compare/contrast with the libpam-otpw package would also be interesting. I might not be the best person to do this, so I've CC'd the otpasswd-talk discussion list to solicit better explanations. Biggest difference is the way those project handle generation of passcodes. OTPW generates many and stores them hashed. We have key + counter which is a bit more elastic. Ensuring some way of receiving new passcodes in a safe manner (any OOB communication like SMS, which is already implemented) it's generally impossible o run out of passcodes. There's around 2^32 passcodes in salted version and 2^128 in not-salted. Idea of key+counter allows us to easily export state data (if allowed by policy) and import into, say, java mobile phone application which can then generate passcodes. otpasswd allows both the use of a optional (via ~/.otpasswd) and global policy-enforced system. In the global system, it would be SGID (SUID as well?) to a shared otpasswd user. Via such a SUID to some special user (otpasswd proposed) (SGID had signal-reception problem). centralized database, the systems administrator can prevent passcard reuse as well as length requirements etc. From what I've such an architecture makes it easier to use one-time-passwords on a LDAP backend as well, but I haven't tried it. LDAP and MySQL is not yet implemented but there's place for it and motivation to write it. SUID allows us to store somewhere password for ldap and mysql (and in case of this configuration SUID is dropped as fast as we get this information). Many policies are implemented currently, much we will implement and test shortly. otpasswd, when set to be PPP-compatible, also allows interoperability with a variety of client applications https://www.grc.com/ppp/software.htm. That said, I have not studied OTPW nor the security of otpasswd closely, and would advise anybody making a choice between the two to perform their own research. I too would have to look closer at it. From what I've read I didn't like it's way of handling race-for-last-key attacks and parallel logins. If somebody likes he should be able to use OTPW, but I think that it's a time to make OPIE obsolete. Bug#563004: ITP: procserv -- A process server with telnet console and log access
Hello, On Wed 30 Dec 2009 2:07:16 Frank Lin PIAT wrote: I am curious why ssh+screen can't do the job? It would be much more secure than telnet. It would be nice to add a note in the package description. Also it is much more à la unix to use two tools together to do one job, each one doing one thing well. Here's a bit of background: procServ origins as a tool for the open source accelerator and physics control system software EPICS (http://www.aps.anl.gov/epics). In that context it is mainly used to run soft EPICS I/O processes in the background, while giving access to the console (stdin/stdout) of the process through a local telnet port. These soft IOC (input/output controller) processes are doing real-time (as fas as Linux allows) stuff, are heavily multi-threaded, doing lots of socket-based IO. The other, hard IOCs in control systems are usually VME-based systems running a real-time OS, with their serial console wired to a terminal server, that allows telnet access. (Some with, most without authentication.) A ssh/screen combination was used to run the soft IOCs in the beginning, but we had many reports that using nifty features of screen (like browsing the history buffer) would stall threads and eventually crash the child process. Also (to provide the rich set of features), screen always assumes the connecting terminal is interactive and understands VT100 escape sequences, which is not the case when using a more generic console access and logging facility like conserver, where connecting to screen sessions fill up log files with escape sequences that make viewing the log impossible. So to make things simpler, a lot more stable, and actually more à la unix, procServ was created as a small, simple facility that runs a child process and connects the console to a telnet server, and that's it. No history browsing, no authentication, no multiple, named, individually colored background sessions, no terminal escape sequences. It adds some system-service level features that screen misses, like restarting the child manually or automatically (with a grace period), blocking characters that could kill the child, creating PID files, etc. To keep things secure, procServ only allows telnet connections from localhost, so the suggested tool chain is conserver(/ssh/)telnet/procServ: conserver doing multi-user mode, authentication/authorization, central logging, etc., either running locally (connecting by telnet to procServ), or remote (connecting by ssh then telnet to procServ). Within a control system, the use of conserver allows to integrate the hard and soft IOCs in exactly the same fashion, i.e. access to the console, log files etc. is the same for VME real-time and Linux soft real-time IOCs. Bug#457486: Removal pending
gtkada has now been uploaded without a dependency on gtk+extra2 and so I've filed a removal bug for gtk+extra2: http://bugs.debian.org/563069 As a result of this bug, gpsim will be removed from Debian unstable and testing at the same time *unless* something is done about this ITA real soon. It's been over a year and I did send a reminder two months ago. Note that there are also two release-critical bugs that could cause the removal of gpsim independently of the removal of gtk+extra2. #551355 #560459 If there are no delays to the migration of the new version of libgtkada2 into testing, the removal of gtk+extra2 from unstable and testing could happen in 10 days. -- Neil Williams = http://www.data-freedom.org/ http://www.linux.codehelp.co.uk/ http://e-mail.is-not-s.ms/ pgpnNemgzcQG2.pgp Description: PGP signature

Bug#562032: (no subject)
I've uploaded an Ubuntu karmic debian package to a PPA: https://launchpad.net/~jjl/+archive/figleaf Obviously that's not a Debian (big-D) package yet. I'm hoping to get the package contributed back upstream to Titus Brown's git repository. It would also be nice to have it end up in Ubuntu and Debian proper. I request assistance with maintaining the graphviz package. That might also move to an RFA later on. Given I'm slowly drifting to more porting, I'm currently lacking time to maintain graphviz properly. If you're interested, you may want to be aware of some points: - Upstream is very nice, but now ships a bundled debian/ directory in its tarball, and will continue to do so. Repacking is/will be needed. - There are libraries, with different sonames, and plugins. I guess there's very little point in splitting the current libgraphviz4 library in more libraries (given it only has 3 rdeps last I checked) but you'll need to understand the library packaging issues here, and try hard not to break anything. - There are bindings for several languages, and some bugs open against them. These bindings were requested presumably for Ubuntu, and given that some aren't really used, or buggy, it might make sense to drop some. Note that obviously, upstream doesn't know how to use each of them, given they're swig-generated. That's all I can think of right now. Packaging is in collab-maint's git (debian-only, but I'm not opposed to seeing this evolve in some other setup), patches can be pushed there in some branches, or even in “unstable” if you know what you're doing. The package description follows: Graph drawing addresses the problem of visualizing structural information by constructing geometric representations of abstract graphs and networks. Automatic generation of graph drawings has important applications in key technologies such as database design, software engineering, VLSI and network design and visual interfaces in other domains. Situations where these tools might be particularly useful include: . * you would like to restructure a program and first need to understand the relationships between its types, procedures, and source files * you need to find the bottlenecks in an Internet backbone - not only individual links, but their relationships * you're debugging a protocol or microarchitecture represented as a finite state machine and need to figure out how a certain error state arises * you would like to browse a database schema, knowledge base, or distributed program represented graphically * you would like to see an overview of a collection of linked documents * you would like to discover patterns and communities of interest in a database of telephone calls or e-mail messages Thanks in advance. Bug#519938: RFS: System protoaculous library
On Tue, 29 Dec 2009 21:51:14 +0100 Damien Raude-Morvan wrote: Le mardi 29 décembre 2009 21:10:41, Michael Gilbert a écrit : Hi, Hi, [context: I'm the owner of yuicompressor ITP #519938] I have put together a protoaculous package for the packages currently embedding it (which of course leads to difficulty when it comes to security updates). I am looking for a sponsor that would be willing to upload the package. Note that I also had to package yui-compressor (which already had an ITP #519938 that appeared to have stalled). I haven't seen any ping from you regarding #519938. As a general guideline, if an ITP is assigned to someone you should try to contact him before working alone on your side :) For example, I would have said to you that there is already a preview package in pkg-java SVN repository : svn://svn.debian.org/svn/pkg-java/trunk/yuicompressor/ This preview package contains : - a debian/watch file - a reviewed debian/copyright but it's missing some interesting bits from your package : - a manpage - a launcher shell script I think your first step will be to commit this work to pkg-java SVN repository (you can request access on [1]). Secondly, to explain the stalled status of this ITP : yuicompressor used a modified and embeded version of rhino Javascript library. YUI Compressor won't work with genuine rhino debian package [2]. I've seen in your debian/rules that you are trying to apt-get source rhino during build : it seems wrong from my point of view. You cannot rely on deb- src lines in /etc/apt/sources.list to build your package and you cannot download source code during build (even when using apt-get). One possible short term solution will be to create a new rhino-source package (like we have cacao-source package) to cleanly Build-Depends from but I haven't had time to work on it (patches welcome :). Other mid-term solution, will be to fix yuicompressor to use clean AST (Abstract Syntax Tree) processor [3]. Hi, I've merged my version with the existing work and commited it to pkg-java's svn repo. Please take a look at it. At this point, the package builds and it is lintian-clean. I'd be very interested in any contructive feedback you may have.
