Description : python ConfigParser bootstraping library

Metaconfig is a library for centralising Python's ConfigParser files.
It is inspired by the logging module where it is increadibly easy to start
writing code that depends on logging whilst deferring how log messages
 will be handled until later.

Bug#603157: ITP: ttf-ubuntu-font-family

2011-11-23 Thread Gürkan Sengün

Hello Jeremy Bicha

Sure I could. But then it's contrib only... what do you think are the chances
for
Ubuntu/Canonical to make the font really free? They (Canonical, Ubuntu) after all
mention the differences between free software and other software. And I sort of

have the feeling they would be interested to see it in main, not just in
contrib.

Thanks,
Gurkan

Bug#603157: ITP: ttf-ubuntu-font-family

2011-11-23 Thread Paul Sladen
On Wed, 23 Nov 2011, [ISO-8859-1] Grkan Sengn wrote:

Everyone would like to see the Ubuntu Font Family in 'main'.
At this point in time, 'main' is sadly not an option because:

  (a) UFF comes with complete source [not just .ttfs], and

  (b) UFF requires a build-system that is not wholly in 'main'.

 then it's contrib only...

Uploading to 'contrib' would be the logical destination. I don't
think there's anything blocking that? I'm happy to /help/ via
pkg-fonts—but because I've been working closely on the Ubuntu Font
Family and I am presented employed by Canonical I don't want to be
seen to be actively forcing anything. From a Debian-perspective I
absolutely want to see it in Debian and moving up the repos whenever
possible.

to make the font really free?

The full source code for the typeface is there, and everyone is free
to modify, share, remix and improve it without any requirement to ask
permission first or the possibility to be denied.

(It is perfectly okay for the FTP masters to have found this to be
non-DFSG free, that is the FTP masters' viewpoint).

what do you think are the chances for Ubuntu/Canonical

At the point that a better libre font licence comes along, the Ubuntu
Font Family can be relicensed. All of the necessary legal permissions
to quickly perform such a relicensing are (intentionally) in-place:

  http://font.ubuntu.com/ufl/FAQ.html

I think it's been consistently stated, that the Ubuntu Font
Licence-1.0 is being used as an *interim licence* solution. There are
likely to be further revisions of the UFL, and also to other libre
font licences, as the community and understanding of open font
production expands.

They (Canonical, Ubuntu) after all mention the differences between
 free software and other software.

Font Software licensing has some unique requirements not found in
other general-purpose software-, or content-licences (where GPL and
CC-BY-SA are already clearly the preferred). There is a necessarity to
allow embeding of the font in documents, without causing those
documents to come under the same licensing conditions as the font.

A font that cannot be /used/ by target users is not much use.
Various of the available font licences try to cover the font-specific
criteria in several ways:

  http://font.ubuntu.com/ufl/FAQ.html#embedding

For instance, the GPL+Font Exception approaches this via:

As a special exception, if you create a document … this font does
not by itself cause the resulting document to be covered by the GNU
   General Public License

The second aspect is that a font-name field is a well-known
identifier/key linking to a particular set of metrics (this is
partially why we have the Liberation Fonts that Red Hat kindly
sponsored). For instance, the SIL OFL approaches this via a
Reserved Name method:

No Modified Version of the Font Software may use the Reserved Font
Name(s) unless explicit written permission is granted

There was a keen desire to a find a way to incorporate both of the
above aspects, and others, into a leen single-page licence, in a way
that did have the burden on seeking prior permission. Nor was likely
to be overly scary to existing font foundries.

As of 18 months ago, no out-of-the-box, font-specific, widely-used
licence was available. Canonical set about sponsoring various work in
the area. The 'Ubuntu' in the UFL name is there to discourage its use
until it's been debugged.

The list of open bugs/comments for the UFL-1.0 is visible at:

  https://launchpad.net/ubuntu-font-licence/+bugs

The UFL-1.0 can't be changed, but work and advice is greatly sought
for feeding into an UFL-1.1 and onwards; or functional equivalent.

In the mean-time, the UFL-1.0 came about by looking for the closest
starting point (SIL OFL 1.1) and making the minimum number of changes.
For convenience, a colourful diff is available at:

  http://font.ubuntu.com/ufl/ofl-1.1-ufl-1.0.diff.html

Yes, future relicensing is not only an option, but an intention.

Yes, the meantime, I think 'contrib' would be a wondeful home.

-Paul

PS. I had another chat with Zack in Orlando about other methods of
meeting a permissive, well-known name/Reserved Name criteria;
Zack has been working issues around the DFSG and trademark
compatibility, which may open up some options:

Bug#582090: ITP: viewnior -- simple, fast and elegant image viewer

2011-11-23 Thread Julien Lavergne
Argh, bad news :(
Do we have an idea of the actual diff between the 2 versions ?
Contacting gtkimageview upstream is a good idea, a backup plan may be to
patch the package in Debian, but it's not a very nice solution :(

Regards,
Julien Lavergne

Le 11/14/2011 02:15 AM, Yao Wei a écrit :

It seems nice to have a helper who also wants to get this into debian.
However, the package dependency makes it more complex to do so.

It uses a modified version of gtkimageview which is done by the author
itself, but the library is needed to be stripped out of viewnior to
get into Debian for maintenance reasons, and viewnior's author doesn't
 like to do so.

Paul Liu (a DD which seems can help us sponsor uploading this package)
suggests we should contact gtkimageview author to incorporate the
library changes from viewnior, but I don't know the way how should we
do, and I am too unconcerntrate on this ITP.

 Help me,
 Yao Wei

Description : music tagger and library organizer
Beets is a media library management system for obsessive-compulsive music
geeks.

The purpose of beets is to get your music collection right once and for all.
It catalogs your collection, automatically improving its metadata as it goes
using the MusicBrainz database. It then provides a set of tools for
manipulating and accessing your music.

Beets also includes a music player that implements the MPD protocol, so you
can play music in your beets library using any MPD client.

I intend to package this under the Debian Python Apps Team.

interface implemented in the openCryptoki project.

Note that this is not really a new package: it was part of main, but was
orphaned, and removed due to the lack of maintainer and low popcon [1].
Since I'm now using this tool, and that it is required to make a TPM
work, I'm adopting it.

Bug#649736: ITP: python-smartypants -- a smart-quotes plugin for pyblosxom

2011-11-23 Thread Julien Danjou
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: python-smartypants
  Version : 1.6.0.3
  Upstream Author : Chad Miller
* URL : http://web.chad.org/projects/smartypants.py/
* License : BSD
  Programming Lang: Python
  Description : a smart-quotes plugin for pyblosxom

It can perform the following transformations:

* Straight quotes ( and ' ) into curly quote HTML entities
* Backticks-style quotes (``like this'') into curly quote HTML entities
* Dashes (-- and ---) into en- and em-dash entities
* Three consecutive dots (... or . . .) into an ellipsis entity

This means you can write, edit, and save your posts using plain old ASCII
straight quotes, plain dashes, and plain dots, but your published posts (and
final HTML output) will appear with smart quotes, em-dashes, and proper
ellipses.

SmartyPants does not modify characters within pre, code, kbd, math
or script tag blocks. Typically, these tags are used to display text where
smart quotes and other smart punctuation would not be appropriate, such as
source code or example markup.

Bug#644789: ITP: UHD - Universal Hardware Driver for Universal Software Radio Peripherals

2011-11-23 Thread A. Maitland Bottoms
Timo == Timo Juhani Lindfors timo.lindf...@iki.fi writes:
Timo as you probably noticed the upstream source does not seem to be in
Timo git. I think you need to download the tarballs (from where?) and use
Timo --git-overlay option.

I've been using a clone of
git://code.ettus.com/ettus/uhd.git
 git clone git://code.ettus.com/ettus/uhd.git
 cd uhd

I then did a git remote add of my pkg-uhd.git repo.
 git remote add pkg-uhd git://anonscm.debian.org/users/bottoms/pkg-uhd.git

I checkout out the release_003_003_001 tag.
 git checkout release_003_003_001

Then I created a debian branch from that.
 git checkout -b debian

Then I merged pkg-uhd into my working debian branch.
 git pull pkg-uhd
 git merge remotes/pkg-uhd/experimental

Merge remote branch 'remotes/pkg-uhd/experimental' into debian

As the debian/copyright file mentions:
The upstream package source tarball was generated from the tag:
 git archive --format=tar --prefix=uhd-3.3.1/ release_003_003_001 | gzip
../uhd_3.3.1.orig.tar.gz
The corresponding UHD images tarball was downloaded from:

http://files.ettus.com/uhd_releases/003_003_001/images-only/UHD-images-003.003.001.tar.gz

The UHD-images-003.003.001.tar.gz needs to be renamed/copied to
uhd_3.3.1.orig-contrib-images.tar.gz in the same directory as
uhd_3.3.1.orig.tar.gz.

Extract the
and
 mv UHD-images-003.003.001-59f407f contrib-images

(Somehow the dpkg source tools know how to do that for you.)

(Another way, https://github.com/EttusResearch/UHD-Mirror/archives/master
leads to upstream source tarballs. But git seems the direct way.)

Then build.
 debuild -rfakeroot -us -uc

There is likely more than one way to do it.
Many collab-maint projects simply keep the debian directory
and have other ways to handle upstream source.

Hope that helps.
-Maitland

Bug#649455: semanticscuttle_0.98.3-1_amd64.changes REJECTED

2011-11-23 Thread Antoine Beaupré

Il 21/11/2011 22:40, Antoine Beaupré ha scritto:
The second problem are the swf files in www/player, for which the source

Indeed, this ships only with the binary versions of those. They are BSD
licensed however, so that is technically legal. Also, the source is
  available here:

  http://musicplayer.sourceforge.net/

I guess that to fix this properly, we would need to package musicplayer?
Or should I patch the package to ship with the source?

The easiest solution would be stripping those files from the tarball
entirely. The second would be to provide the sources somewhere, either
in the semanticscuttle tarball or, even better, in a separate source
 package.

Thanks for the review again.

The thing with those files is that I do not actually *know* how to
compile them from source. So I suspect even packaging musicplayer would
be difficult, as I do not know how the binary files could be compiled.

But maybe this is something that should be considered.

In the meantime, I think I'll have to cripple the software by removing
the files from the distribution.

Would a simple debian/patches/foo.patch be sufficient? Or is there
something I am not familiar with .orig.tar.gz manipulation that can be
done?

Thanks,

A.

I request an adopter for the gtimelog package.

The package description is:
gtimelog provides a time tracking application to allow the user to track what
they work on during the day and how long they spend doing it.

I took over maintenance of gtimelog to use it at work, but my employer's
timesheet system now needs a forked version of gtimelog,
http://git.collabora.co.uk/?p=gtimelog.git;a=summary, and the changes from
this version aren't in a form amenable to being sent upstream. Rather than
pretending I still maintain the Debian package, it seems best to hand it over
to someone else.

Regards,
Simon

I request an adopter for the gtimelog package.

The package description is:
gtimelog provides a time tracking application to allow the user to track what
they work on during the day and how long they spend doing it.

I took over maintenance of gtimelog to use it at work, but my employer's
timesheet system now needs a forked version of gtimelog,
http://git.collabora.co.uk/?p=gtimelog.git;a=summary, and the changes from
this version aren't in a form amenable to being sent upstream. Rather than
pretending I still maintain the Debian package, it seems best to hand it over
to someone else.

Regards,
Simon

Bug#585905: Cassandra 1.0

2011-11-23 Thread Eric Evans
[ Damien Raude-Morvan ]
I would like to help on cassandra packaging. What's current status ? Is there
 a git repository somewhere ?

Great, the more the merrier!

The most up-to-date work is what is checked into the upstream repository
(I had planned to fork from there when the time came).

From a quick look, it seems that some build-dependencies are missing :
 * avro
 * compress-lzf
 * high-scale-lib
 * jamm
 * snakeyaml
 * thrift (but you seems to be working on it)
Maybe a can start working on those ?

Right, packaging the dependencies is the first order of business, (and I
don't have a current list, but this looks woefully short).

A good place to start would be to suss out the full list of dependencies
(including versions), check them against what is already packaged for
Debian, and then start packaging the rest (and if you could copy this
report with links to the RFP/ITPs, that'd be great).

Thanks!

Bug#649783: ITP: plexus-containers1.5 -- Plexus' inversion-of-control (IoC) container

2011-11-23 Thread Damien Raude-Morvan
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Damien Raude-Morvan draz...@debian.org

* Package name: plexus-containers1.5
  Version : 1.5.5
  Upstream Author : Codehaus
* URL : http://plexus.codehaus.org/plexus-containers
* License : Apache-2.0
  Programming Lang: Java
Description : Plexus' inversion-of-control (IoC) container

The Plexus project provides a full software stack for creating and executing
software projects. Based on the Plexus container, the applications can
utilise component-oriented programming to build modular, reusable components
that can easily be assembled and reused.
 .
Plexus Containers is Plexus' inversion-of-control (IoC) container
 and companion tools:
  * plexus-container-default is the IoC container itself,
  * plexus-component-metadata is a Maven plugin to generate plexus
component.xml from source annotations,
  * plexus-component-annotations provides the Java 5 annotations
for plexus components,
  * plexus-component-javadoc provides javadoc taglets to add plexus
documentation to javadoc.
 .
This package replaces both plexus-containers and plexus-component-metadata
from 1.0.x branch.

This package is already in Debian as plexus-containers and plexus-component-
metadata but we need a new source package to build new upstream release (which
seems to break API/ABI-compat).

This package is a dependency of Maven 3.x

Cheers,
