Bug#733509: RFP: lubuntu-software-center -- Utility for browsing, installing, removing applications.

2013-12-30 Thread Bob Bib
Lubuntu Software Center? Another light newbie-friendly app catalogue /
installer? Maybe...
Just don't forget we have a much more powerful Synaptic :)

By the way, does it:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/lubuntu-software-center
work correctly with a Debian version of app-install-data:
http://packages.qa.debian.org/a/app-install-data.html
// Ubuntu version:

?

Best wishes, Bob

Bug#727085: Now we don't depend on the weird libevent patch

2013-12-30 Thread Faidon Liambotis

On Mon, Dec 30, 2013 at 12:56:48AM +0100, László Böszörményi (GCS) wrote:

My opinion for releases follows. Do one if there's an important
bugfix, new feature added, etc. In short, if there's a reason.
On the other hand, there's no problem with releasing every two weeks,
it's just not common. It matches with Debian standards, meaning that
normally ten days needed for unstable -> testing migration.

Two weeks is probably too often for Debian but time-based releases in
general (rather than "important bugfix") are fairly common. I think the
original idea of accumulating multiple sprints into one "community"
release is a great path forward. The proposal for 8-week releases sounds
just fine to me.

Looking a bit further ahead, Debian will release a new stable in
something like a year from now, and will have to support whatever
happens to be in testing by November 6th, for at least the release of
next stable + one year (i.e. for about 3-4 years), without the ability
to bump into newer HHVM versions. Some upstreams tend to release some
"LTS" releases for such uses, potentially labeling one of their
incremental releases as LTS. This isn't a prerequisite, but it's good to
actually have some longer stable/security management in mind when
planning your release schedule.

Lastly, Laszlo, we should talk about how I can help with packaging.

Do you have a packager position there, at FB? :) At least ATM I've
two places to work for. At Debian I've more than a hundred packages
and twenty to do. Especially that I have to work more or less constant
from 31st 06:00 am to 2nd 04:20 pm. Will be hard, thus I'll start
again with HHVM next year.

Well, noone really forced you to ITP this :) You definitely seem to have
your hands full, there's no need for you to take on more than you're
able to handle. If you're too busy, I can just takeover this ITP, just
say so.

Now my previous package section for HHVM,
which I've named hiphop-php (to match the PHP policy of Debian, but
will re-check that):

Which section of the policy mandates that? I'd be very suprised if the
existing PHP policy covers alternative interpeters.

HipHop VM (HHVM) is a new open-source virtual machine designed for executing

programs written in PHP. HHVM uses a just-in-time compilation approach to
achieve superior performance while maintaining the flexibility that PHP
developers are accustomed to. HipHop VM (and before it HPHPc) has realized
> 5x increase in throughput for Facebook compared with Zend PHP 5.2.
HipHop is most commonly run as a standalone server, replacing both Apache
and modphp.

The last two lines are incorrect considering the new FastCGI mode of
operation, which AIUI will be the only one actually offered by the
package, as the embedded standalone webserver requires patches to
libevent.

I think packaging for Debian is a good step. Then Ubuntu maintainers
will pick it up and as I know, Mint based on Ubuntu, they will have it
as well.

Ubuntu automatically syncs from Debian, there's no need for Ubuntu
maintainers to do anything. And yes, there's tons of other Debian &
Ubuntu derivatives that also regularly sync from those two.

Regards,
Faidon

Bug#733692: O: genisovh -- Make CD-ROMs bootable for SGI MIPS machines

2013-12-30 Thread Axel Beckert
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

Thiemo Seufer, the maintainer of the genisovh package, unfortunately
died in 2008[1].

  [1] http://www.debian.org/News/2008/20081229

Therefore I declare the genisovh package orphaned. If you want to be the
new maintainer, please take it.

See http://www.debian.org/devel/wnpp/#howto-o for detailed instructions
how to adopt a package properly.

Some information about the package:

Package: genisovh
Version: 0.1-3
Installed-Size: 20
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.3.2.ds1-4)
Description: Make CD-ROMs bootable for SGI MIPS machines
Genisovh creates a Disk Volume Header (dvh) on a CD image and records
bootable images therein. This allows the SGI firmware to boot those
images without needing knowledge about the filesystem on the CD image.

I would love a pull request, or if you get really into this I'm happy to
make you a co-author on the repo.

Excellent. We move pretty fast and are constantly making performance
improvements which is why we release internally every 2 weeks. I'll float
it with the rest of the team. If we do 26 releases this year we'll be at
2.30.0 by the end of the year. Is that weird?

>Do you have a packager position there, at FB? :)

Short term, yes, but long term we would much rather the community take
over packaging.

On my team it wouldn't be a full time job, but I'm filling the role right
now and would love you to do it instead ;) You'd just have to find other
good things to do too. https://www.facebook.com/careers/

>Now my previous package section for HHVM,
>which I've named hiphop-php (to match the PHP policy of Debian, but

Our project used to be named hiphop-php when it was a PHP to C++
translator. We decommissioned it in February once the JIT was faster. The
JIT was codenamed HHVM so we've taken that on as the project's main name
since it is the only runtime we support now.

Should I use this? Again a pull request would be awesome.

I would be elated for any help you can offer here. And even if you can't
do it, guide me on the steps I need to do and I'll do everything in my
power to help. We are very excited about being in every distro.

One other thing I haven't brought up and probably should, is we are trying
to be a drop-in replacement for all facets of php. For example, if our
binary is named "php" then it will accept the same command line args that
php-src accepts. For now, the packages I've made have left our binary
named hhvm since I don't know how it will interact with the php-src
package, but if there is an easy way to use "alternates" or something we
can drop in and replace the system binary too (and give a big speed boost
to user's scripts).

gevent-socketio is a Python implementation of the Socket.IO protocol, developed
originally for Node.js by LearnBoost and then ported to other languages.
Socket.IO enables real-time web communications between a browser and a server,
using a WebSocket-like API. One aim of this project is to provide a single
gevent-based API that works across the different WSGI-based web frameworks out
there (Pyramid, Pylons, Flask, web2py, Django, etc...). Only ~3 lines of code
are required to tie-in gevent-socketio in your framework. Note: you need to use
the gevent python WSGI server to use gevent-socketio.

Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: plinth
  Version : git snapshot
  Upstream Author : James Vasile
* URL : https://github.com/jvasile/Plinth
* License : GNU Affero General Public License, Version 3 or later
  Programming Lang: Python
Description : web front end for administering every aspect of a Freedom
Box

The front end is an extensible web platform for forms and menus. It
allows authenticated users to fill out forms. The interface saves the
form data and from them generates configuration files for the various
services running on the box.

The interface is pluggable. Drop modules into place to add new
capabilities to Plinth and your Freedom Box. Replace existing modules
to get newer, better shinier functions. The modules will automatically
integrate into the existing menu system so you can control all of the
box's parts from one central location.

The web interface and framework is the web interface of the Freedombox,
and would be great to have in Debian proper. :)

Initial packaging is available from
http://git.tzafrir.org.il/?p=plinth/plinth.git >, deb source
at http://tzafrir.org.il/~tzafrir/fbox/ >.
