Bug#153587: Licensing

2014-05-06 Thread Ivan Kohler
I don't personally have a need for String::LRC anymore and this
WNPP should perhaps be closed entirely (String::LRC it is of niche usefulness,
typically integrating with legacy systems).

Nevertheless, for the record in case someone does wind up needing and
packaging this, I did wind up contacting the author back then about
licensing and he did provide a statement that BSD was his intention and
it was fine to redistribute under that license. (That was more than good
enough for 2002. Not sure it holds up to today's standards?)

Date: Tue, 10 Sep 2002 09:33:49 -0400
From: WhoElse? whoe...@elitedigital.net
Subject: Re: String::LRC licensing

That sounds fine to me, my intent was along the
lines of the BSD license; thus, the generic BSD
license is fine. Would you require anything
more of me at this time?

Regards,

Ralph Padron

From reading your license to the String::LRC module, it appears to me
that your intention was to create a free software license, but there
are some problems with your specific license.

Would you consider licensing the String::LRC module under the BSD
license (or any other free license of your choice, such as the GPL,
Artistic, etc.)? The BSD license appears to be your intention:

I would like to do it by myself, but, as I already said, I am not

These are the requirements apt-venv satisfies, It would be great if
also chdist did the same:

 * application must allow user to run his own scripts/command
 * application must allow user to exec a bash session
+ application must prevent user from using sudo/su during a session
+ application must set env variable which points out the current
distro/release during session
 * application should support both Debian and Ubuntu
 * application should be compatible with XDG Base Directory Specification

Severity: normal

We request an adopter for the signing-party package. There's currently
a number of co-maintainers but the majority of them have indicated to
have no time to contribute a lot to the package.

The package is an interesting collection of tools and in the BTS there's
a number of useful patches and reports that need to be evaluated and
where relevant, applied to the package.

Since the team is also upstream there's a lot of flexibility and
freedom to make changes that you see fit.

The packaging is currently in svn but a move to another vcs if so
preferred is perfectly fine.

The package description is:
signing-party is a collection for all kinds of PGP/GnuPG related things,
including tools for signing keys, keyring analysis, and party preparation.
 .
  * caff: CA - Fire and Forget signs and mails a key
  * pgp-clean: removes all non-self signatures from key
  * pgp-fixkey: removes broken packets from keys
  * gpg-mailkeys: simply mail out a signed key to its owner
  * gpg-key2ps: generate PostScript file with fingerprint paper strips
  * gpgdir: recursive directory encryption tool
  * gpglist: show who signed which of your UIDs
  * gpgsigs: annotates list of GnuPG keys with already done signatures
  * gpgparticipants: create list of party participants for the organiser
  * gpgwrap: a passphrase wrapper
  * keyanalyze: minimum signing distance (MSD) analysis on keyrings
  * keylookup: ncurses wrapper around gpg --search
  * sig2dot: converts a list of GnuPG signatures to a .dot file
  * springgraph: creates a graph from a .dot file

Let me know if there are any questions.

Cheers,
Thijs

 Hi Daniel,

It's actually neither of these - the library needs to be a package for Qpid
 Proton:

 http://qpid.apache.org/releases/qpid-proton-0.7/index.html

Unfortunately I can't seem to find anything for this library on those repos.

 Thanks for the feedback

I see that somebody has started to work on an official package of
 qpid-proton for the Debian/Ubuntu world:

 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=732738

This is the report in the mentors page:

 http://mentors.debian.net/package/qpid-proton

Darryl, thanks for contributing this to Debian - have you had feedback
from anybody about your work on this package? Is anybody sponsoring it?
Not as of yet, no, on either the feedback or sponsorship side of things.

Ok, I guess this can be looked at this as part of the OpenMAMA package
update to get your packaged sponsored

You have several wnpp bugs, I think the link I gave in the earlier email
is not the one you link in the changelog, so we could use this one instead:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=732302

The lintian report (mentors.debian.net) shows a lot of 'E' and 'W'
messages. It is hard for a sponsor to upload the package while those
exist. If you can remove them, I could then sponsor it. Many of them
are duplicates and some are quite easy to fix, e.g.

copyright-should-refer-to-common-license-file-for-apache-2
http://lintian.debian.org/tags/copyright-should-refer-to-common-license-file-for-apache-2.html

is basically telling you the debian/copyright file should refer to
/usr/share/common-licenses/Apache-2.0

Also, do you want to track the debian/* files in your qpid-proton
repository or would you like Debian to keep those in a Debian hosted Git
server? For the latter, you just need to create a guest account on
http://alioth.debian.org and send me your username and we can work out a
way for you to put things in Git on alioth.

If you let me know about these things and cc the
debian-ment...@lists.debian.org mailing list and the bug we will get
this moving along.

Regards,

Daniel

Bug#747235: RFP: tracebox -- Middlebox Detection Tool

2014-05-06 Thread Axel Beckert
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: tracebox
  Version : 0.1
Upstream Author : Gregory Detal gregory.de...@uclouvain.be et al.
* URL or Web page : http://www.tracebox.org/
* License : GPLv2+
  Description : Middlebox Detection Tool

Tracebox is a tool that allows to detect middleboxes on any paths, i.e.,
between a source and any destination. Tracebox can be viewed as a tool
similar to traceroute as it uses ICMP replies to identify changes in the
packets. The fact that tracebox is able to detect middleboxes comes from
the observation that ICMP messages are often not as defined in
RFC792. Indeed it is quite common to receive a ICMP Time-to-Live
exceeded message with the original datagram instead of 64 bits as
described in the standard. This is caused by operating systems
configured to reply with full ICMP (e.g., Linux, Cisco IOS-XR, etc.) as
well as the ICMP Multi-Part Messages extension that standardize the fact
that routers using MPLS tunnels replies and ICMP message containing the
full datagram.

There seems a start of Debian packaging in the upstream repository, but
it's not complete (missing debian/copyright), and doesn't build a
working package, at least not when being used from a plain git checkout.

It seems that a prerequisite for packaging tracebox is packaging
libcrafter: https://github.com/pellegre/libcrafter -- it's included in
https://github.com/tracebox/tracebox as a git submodule.

Bug#729203: Rebuild of possible FFmpeg reverse build-dependenciesa

2014-05-06 Thread Andreas Cadhalpun

If you want to compare FFmpeg with Libav, it would be better to compare
FFmpeg 2.2 with Libav 10 (currently in Debian/experimental), as they are
approximately from the same time. Otherwise the comparison won't be fair.

and I found;
ffmpeg-set-alternatives

A helper package to create and remove the alternatives for the ffmpeg.

The Debian alternatives system (man update-alternatives):

It is possible for several programs fulfilling the same or similar functions
to be installed on a single system at the same time. For example,
many systems have several text editors installed at once. This gives
choice to the
users of a system, allowing each to use a different editor, if desired,
but makes it difficult for a program to make a good choice for an editor
to invoke if the user has not specified a particular preference.
Debian's alternatives system aims to solve this problem.

As far as I can tell, ffmpeg-set-alternatives is meant for the binaries
ffmpeg, ffplay etc., because older versions of Libav created them.
Newer versions of Libav use avconv, avplay etc., so this package is not
needed anymore.

The FFmpeg install is direct from the FFmpeg.org sute.
I'm replacing the network router this week. The week after, I plan to do
some screencasts on the system with FFmpeg 2.2 .
After that I need add two systems to the test bench to practice creating
deb files, and test them.
Once the deb file(s) are successfully tested, they will be uploaded to
the ppa.

I see.

All my systems are Kubuntu 13.10 . I use [synaptic] and [apt] removing
muon, pulseaudio disabling [desktop effects]

Is there a particular reason why you don't upgrade to Kubuntu 14.04?

Best regards,
Andreas

Description : PEP 427-based built-package format for Python

A wheel is a ZIP-format archive with a specially formatted filename
and the .whl extension. It is designed to contain all the files for a
PEP 376 compatible install in a way that is very close to the on-disk
format. Many packages will be properly installed with only the
“Unpack” step (simply extracting the file onto sys.path), and the
unpacked archive preserves enough information to “Spread” (copy data
and scripts to their final locations) at any later time.

The wheel project provides a bdist_wheel command for setuptools.

This package will be team maintained by the Debian Python Modules Team.

Bug#732302: [Openmama-dev] QPID dependencies

You have several wnpp bugs, I think the link I gave in the earlier email
is not the one you link in the changelog, so we could use this one instead:
 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=732302

Okay.

The lintian report (mentors.debian.net) shows a lot of 'E' and 'W'
messages. It is hard for a sponsor to upload the package while those
exist. If you can remove them, I could then sponsor it. Many of them
are duplicates and some are quite easy to fix, e.g.

 copyright-should-refer-to-common-license-file-for-apache-2
 http://lintian.debian.org/tags/copyright-should-refer-to-common-license-file-for-apache-2.html

is basically telling you the debian/copyright file should refer to
 /usr/share/common-licenses/Apache-2.0

I'll fix those straight away.

I've created one, mcpierce-guest, and would like to use that to track
the packaging changes.

If you let me know about these things and cc the
debian-ment...@lists.debian.org mailing list and the bug we will get
 this moving along.

Excellent! Thank you.

So, just to clarify for myself given the workflow differences between
Debian and Fedora, my next step is to update the qpid-proton package,
fixing the bugs reported, and upload it via dput against bug#732302?

Bug#729203: Rebuild of possible FFmpeg reverse build-dependenciesa

2014-05-06 Thread Cyborg Ethly Alpha {My Research Desk}

From My Research Desk :)

 Hi,

 On one system, I have FFmpeg 2.x is installed side by side with Libav ;
 The package listing from Synaptic shows;
 libavcodec-extra-52

 This is from version 0.5...

 libavcodec-extra-53

 ...and this from version 0.8.

 libavcodec55-ffmpeg

 all installed.

If you want to compare FFmpeg with Libav, it would be better to
compare FFmpeg 2.2 with Libav 10 (currently in Debian/experimental),
as they are approximately from the same time. Otherwise the comparison
 won't be fair.
To start, I'm going to stick with the compile instructions from FFmpeg
(that includes compiling all dependencies). Once I'm comfortable with
that, I'm going to add two more systems to the network so I can test,
deb packaging different install configurations.

 and I found;
 ffmpeg-set-alternatives

A helper package to create and remove the alternatives for the ffmpeg.

The Debian alternatives system (man update-alternatives):

It is possible for several programs fulfilling the same or similar
 functions
to be installed on a single system at the same time. For example,
many systems have several text editors installed at once. This gives
 choice to the
users of a system, allowing each to use a different editor, if desired,
but makes it difficult for a program to make a good choice for an
 editor
to invoke if the user has not specified a particular preference.
Debian's alternatives system aims to solve this problem.

As far as I can tell, ffmpeg-set-alternatives is meant for the
binaries ffmpeg, ffplay etc., because older versions of Libav created
 them.
Newer versions of Libav use avconv, avplay etc., so this package is
 not needed anymore.

I used refurbished equipment, particularly laptops and netbooks (~ $200
per system). I have found (through experience) that it's best to wait
between 6 to 9 months before upgrading. Upgrading to x.04 (or x.10) on
04 (or 10) causes fatal errors that are not recoverable. You have to
wipe the system and do a clean install. By waiting, even if the upgrade
creates fatal errors (as 13.10 did) they are command line recoverable.
This is why on Kubuntu Muon is removed, and Synaptic Apt are used.
Muon (kde) brings the whole system down. I've also disabled desktop
effects because it cause system stability issues that does affect video
stability. Pulseaudio is also removed. I find studio equipment (mixers,
midi, etc) work better without it.

If you watch the development of my youtube channel (an OpenIPTV channel)
http://youtube.com/CyborgAlphaV1 , you can see a IPTV channel built (and
run) solely on Linux and using FFmpeg Kdnelive.

 Best regards,
 Andreas

The delayer library allows you to delay any tasks.
It is similar to priority-queue mechanism.

I am packaging ruby-delayer as it is a dependency of mikutter
for next major version.

The git-repository is to be found here:
