Bug#809345: ITP: pmix -- Process Management Interface - Exascale

2015-12-29 Thread Ralph Castain
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

The Process Management Interface (PMI) has been used for quite some time as a
means of exchanging wireup information needed for interprocess communication.
Two versions (PMI-1 and PMI-2) have been released as part of the MPICH effort.
While PMI-2 demonstrates better scaling properties than its PMI-1 predecessor,
attaining rapid launch and wireup of the roughly 1M processes executing across
100k nodes expected for exascale operations remains challenging.

PMI Exascale (PMIx) represents an attempt to resolve these questions by
providing an extended version of the PMI standard specifically designed to
support clusters up to and including exascale sizes. The overall objective of
the project is not to branch the existing pseudo-standard definitions - in
fact, PMIx fully supports both of the existing PMI-1 and PMI-2 APIs - but
rather to (a) augment and extend those APIs to eliminate some current
restrictions that impact scalability, and (b) provide a reference
implementation of the PMI-server that demonstrates the desired level of
scalability.

The charter of the PMIx community is to:

Develop an open source (non-copy-left licensed) and independent (i.e., not
affiliated with any specific programming model code base) standalone library to
support application interactions with Resource Managers (RMs)

Retain transparent compatibility with the existing PMI-1 and PMI-2 definitions,
and any future PMI releases

Support the Instant On initiative for rapid startup of applications at exascale
and beyond

Work with the HPC community to define and implement new APIs that support
evolving programming model requirements for application-RM interactions.

PMIx is designed to be particularly easy for resource managers to adopt, thus
facilitating a rapid uptake into that community for application portability.
Both client and server libraries are included, along with reference examples of
client usage and server-side integration.

The original PMIx source can be downloaded from
http://pmix.github.io/master/downloads/

PMIx is licensed as 3-clause BSD. It will be used by Open MPI (beginning with
the 2.0 series), all production resource managers, and releases of other
programming libraries in the upcoming year.

I propose to provide you with a .deb package.

Hope this provides all the required info.
Ralph

Bug#801253: O: wicd -- wired and wireless network manager

2015-12-29 Thread toogley

Hello,

I'd like to maintain the wicd package, especially because it's a kind of
popular package. That would offer me a great challenge to master. But i
assume, I'll certainly make errors and certainly be very slow at the
beginning in comparison with an experienced maintainer.

I can't estimate if that's a critical problem or if I'm suitable for
maintaining such a popular package. Of course I'll do my best.

==> So, what do you guys think about that?

regards,

toogley

Hi,

TL;DR: wicd is a lightweight alternative to GNOME's Network Manager.
It is written in Python and offers commandline, curses and GTK user
interfaces.

David Paleino (Cc'ed), original developer and current Debian package
maintainer of wicd stated multiple times[1][2] that he has no more
time to work on wicd.

Upstream development already has been passed[1] over to new
developers. I asked in that thread if the new upstream developers
would also take over the packaging of wicd for Debian, but it has been
unanswered for more than one year now, though.

wicd has seen two NMUs[3][4] in the past, both related to python-urwid
API changes.

According to Gianfranco (Cc'ed), David said that "he would avoid
seeing the package die"[2]. And since the package received two NMUs
since the last maintainer upload in 2012, I think it's the best to
declare it as orphaned so that it's clear that someone who's
interested can take over the package.

There's already some work done on the package at [5]. Any future
maintainer should base on that work.

I'd be available for sponsoring wicd as I've done the first NMU and
sponsored the second. I may also join a dedicated team in case wicd
will be team-maintained in the future. That team would just need a
more python-savvy lead than me.

Owner: Andreas Tille

* Package name: ngs-sdk
  Version : 1.2.3
Upstream Author : National Center for Biotechnology Information
* URL : https://github.com/ncbi/ngs
* License : public domain
  Programming Lang: C
Description : Next Generation Sequencing language Bindings
NGS is a new, domain-specific API for accessing reads, alignments and
pileups produced from Next Generation Sequencing. The API itself is
independent from any particular back-end implementation, and supports
use of multiple back-ends simultaneously. It also provides a library for
building new back-end "engines". The engine for accessing SRA data is
contained within the sister repository ncbi-vdb.
 .
The API is currently expressed in C++, Java and Python languages. The
design makes it possible to maintain a high degree of similarity between
the code in one language and code in another - especially between C++
 and Java.

Remark: This package is a new dependency of the sra-sdk package and
maintained by the Debian Med team at

Bug#738469: RFA: twinkle -- Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) SIP Phone

2015-12-29 Thread Peter Colberg
Dear Debian VoIP team,

Twinkle, a graphical SIP client, has recently been resurrected upstream
with a port to Qt 5 [1]. I have packaged twinkle 1.9.0 for Debian [2],
which has been uploaded by the previous maintainer, Clint Adams.

[1] http://twinkle.dolezel.info/
[2] https://bugs.debian.org/797159

Going forward, what do you think of maintaining twinkle under the
umbrella of the pkg-voip team? I am not a DD/DM and would require
sponsorship for uploads. So far I gained packaging experience thanks
to Graham Inggs and Sébastien Villemot from the Debian Julia team [3].

The twinkle package is maintained in a git repository [4].

Software in general is weightless, unless, of course one prints a
hardcopy book of it via a publisher (e.g. MIT Press) and takes it
across the border. (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pretty_Good_Privacy#Criminal_investigation
)

Yet pretty much every project on github claims to be "lightweight", "fast", etc.

Would it hurt to drop "lightweight", "light and fast" etc? Do these
adjectives have any meaning really?

Hi Dimitri,
"lightweight" has a meaning: "of light weight" :)
But, granted, it may be dropped since, as you said, the word is overused
to the extent that became meaningless.

Sure thing, and thanks for the clarification on the intent of enabling the
bindings on the original package. I fully understand and agree that coming up
with a new name seems like the sensible thing to do, and one that would be
better handled at this stage before the package is released indeed.

I will contact upstream in the hopes of picking a reasonable name for this
package, and update the bug and files accordingly. Again, thanks for raising
awereness to this issue!
