Ok, all necessary parts have either bugs filed against existing packages
in Debian, or RFP filed with packaging patches. And are blocking this
bug.

Attached is a working and tested packaging delta against
. The
missing part is updating that repo to version 1.0.1, which is the
latest upstream release, and what I've been working against. Please
let me know if something smells fishy.

For the patches needed for telegraf, I'll be submitting them upstream,
but only once I've internally cleared the situation with the CLA.

Thanks,
Guillem

I do not think insulting language like "spam" is helpful here.

In unstable there are around 3500 packages for perl modules,
and even more for python modules.

The whole JS ecosystem still being a bit immature is a real problem,
but the number of packages itself is not a problem.

I am not a fan of all that JS stuff, but I do not see any valid basis
for rejecting such packages in general.

+1

Seriously, can we please keep this nodejs stuff out of the main repository?

It's not like I don't trust APT guys in finding the right bullet to deal
with thousands of trivial packages but do we really have to care about
the costs of all that spam littering up our namespace?

Eduard.

Bug#841113: ITP: extremetools -- tools for running processes under extreme uid and gid

2016-10-17 Thread Ben Hutchings
You've already commented the silent failure mode, so it's not that hard
to find.

As for 'is it problem?', why do you think I pointed these things out?
Perhaps you have good reasons to do things in an unusual way, but in
the absence of comments to explain them I infer that you either don't
know or have arbitrarily rejected conventional approaches.  Which you
seem to confirm by saying:

> I will NEVER use str* functions from libc in my code.

I'm ending this conversation here; ultimately it's for prospective
sponsors to decide whether it is a good idea to introduce this program
into Debian in its current shape.

Bug#841121: RFP: golang-github-influxdata-config -- unified configuration management package

Package: wnpp

* Package name: golang-github-influxdata-config
  Version : 0.0~git20160309.0.8ec4638-1
  Upstream Author : InfluxData
* URL : https://github.com/influxdata/config
* License : NONE!?
  Programming Lang: Go
Description : A unified configuration management package

The intention of this package is to unify existing patterns of interacting
with configuration across the elements of the TICK+E stack. As such, it
implements the superset of APIs from both github.com/influxdata/toml and
github.com/BurntSushi/toml, while also providing a small API for the common
case of loading and storing configuration from a particular file. It also
provides wrapper types for formatting Durations and Sizes in TOML, which
were previously held in a sub-package within InfluxDB. Also provided is the
ability to document configuration fields using a "doc" struct tag. When the
config struct is marshalled as TOML, any doc struct tags found will be
inserted as TOML comments in an appropriate place to document the
 corresponding field.

This package is a dependency of telegraf latest upstream releases.

The lack of license situation needs to be resolved before this can be
uploaded (see the link in the License field above).

Attached a working and tested packaging, where only the ITP bug number
needs to be filled in the debian/changelog, Maintainer changed, and Vcs
fields added.

Thanks,
Guillem

This is the Influxdata fork of the official TOML package. It supports
additional data types, documenting TOML fields, and nicer output.

This package is a dependency of telegraf latest upstream releases.

There are two problems to be solved before this can be uploaded:

  * Uses a pre-built generated PEG output file, should be switched to
use the newly packaged peg-go.
  * Upstream has modified directly the pre-built generated PEG output
file, tracked at ,
but ITSM those changes could simply be dropped when the pre-generated
file gets dropped.

Attached a working and tested packaging, where in addition to the above,
only the ITP bug number needs to be filled in the debian/changelog,
Maintainer changed, and Vcs fields added.

However, the code:

- Has a silent failure mode
- Reinvents common C library functions like strtol(), getopt(),
strerror()
- Defines many similar functions differing only in number of arguments,
where a varargs function would be appropriate
- Doesn't have a 'make install' rule
- Has manually maintained dependencies on headers

I really think you should get a little more experience with C and
makefiles, and a full code review, before packaging something that aims
to be a security-critical tool.

Could you please elaborate on that "extreme" bit?
I failed to get even a basic explanation of it both from this
description and the project files on Github.

I understand that you may be not a native English speaker so you may
well be putting a meaning into that word which is (slightly) different
from the conventional perception of what it should be. ;-)

Description : C implementation of The SPICE Toolkit

SPICE (Spacecraft Planet Instrument C-matrix Events) is a NASA ancillary
information system used to compute geometric and event information in analyzing
and planning science observations obtained from spacecraft. It is also used in
planning missions and conducting numerous engineering functions needed to carry
out those missions.

SPICE has become the de facto standard for handling much of the so-called
observation geometry information on NASA's planetary missions, and it is now
widely used in support of science data analysis on planetary missions of other
space agencies as well. Some SPICE capabilities are used on a variety of
astrophysics and solar physics missions, such as JAXA's Hayabusa project, ESA's
Rosetta or NASA's Steins.

I would like this package to be maintained either by the Debian Astro team or,
if it were outside its scope, the Debian Science team.

icinga1 as being a fork of nagios, can be probably seen as legacy.
Icinga2 is a complete new Software with different concepts, a new codebase
and a bunch of new and cool features seen nowhere else. It is far away from
being legacy.

Bug#838484: is Icinga legacy?

2016-10-17 Thread Daniel Pocock

The Sensu web site claims that their monitoring tool, Sensu, provides
"Monitoring that doesn't suck" and "reuse monitoring checks and plugins
from legacy monitoring tools like Nagios, Icinga, Zabbix, and many more"

Is Icinga/Icinga2 considered to be "legacy", or is that only the opinion
of the Sensu developers?

If it is legacy, is there anything else now in Debian that replaces it?

Has anybody made an objective comparison of Nagios, Icinga2 and Sensu?

I created an RFP bug[1] for evaluating Sesnu, any comments people could
submit there would be welcome.

Regards,

Daniel

I am packaging this as a dependency of keysafe, another ITP of mine.

Upstream says:

"The code is intended to be included as part of the source of a
C/C++ program."

but I intend to convert it to a shared library (binary packages
libzxcvbn-dev, libzxcvbn0) for Debian.

Description : monospaced font with programming ligatures

Fira Code is a Fira Mono font extended with a set of ligatures for
common programming multi-character combinations. This is just a font
rendering feature: underlying code remains ASCII-compatible. This helps
to read and understand code faster. For some frequent sequences like ..
or // ligatures allow us to correct spacing.

Description : Quickly go back to a specific parent directory

Quickly go back to a specific parent directory in linux instead of typing "cd
../../.." redundantly.

If you are in this path
/home/user/project/src/org/main/site/utils/file/reader/whatever and you want to
go to site directory quickly, then just type: bd site
In fact, You can simply type bd like bd s or bd si
If there are more than one directories with same name up in the hierarchy, bd
will take you to the closest. (Not considering the immediate parent.)

Using bd within backticks (`bd `) prints out the path without
changing the current directory.
You can take advantage of that by combining `bd ` with other
commands such as ls, ln, echo, zip, tar etc..
