Bug#949977: ITP: libgnt -- GLib Ncurses Toolkit

2021-01-22 Thread Richard Laager

This obviously took me a long time to get to, but I finally have.

1. As discussed with Ari, I have adopted the Pidgin package. I also
   made a few cleanups at the same time. More extensive updating (e.g.
   to modern debhelper compat) will probably have to wait until after
   bullseye, given the impending freeze.
2. I have uploaded libgnt, which should hit the NEW queue.
3. I have a Pidgin 2.14.1 package prepared, which uses the libgnt
   package. As soon as libgnt clears NEW, I can upload pidgin.

Bug#700337: RFP: kibana --- heads up: upstream license change to the non-free SSPL

2021-01-22 Thread Axel Beckert
Hi again,

a lot of things and discussions are currently happening around the
license change of ElasticSeach and Kibana. Some of those are probably
also interesting in this context of packaging work of Kibana:

Axel Beckert wrote:

For those who still would like to see Kibana being packaged for
Debian, there's a fork of the old code underway under the previous
license (Apache License 2.0) by AWS and several other companies:

https://aws.amazon.com/de/blogs/opensource/stepping-up-for-a-truly-open-source-elasticsearch/
https://logz.io/blog/truly-doubling-down-on-open-source-2/

>
> https://bugs.debian.org/915537 (ftp.debian.org: MongoDB SSPL v1
> license and the DFSG)

Citing from that bug report:

  MongoDB has submitted the license to OSI for review[2]; the
  discussion there is still ongoing, but the initial response seems to
  be negative.

That application process got withdrawn by the license steward from
MongoDB due to mainly negative feedback:
http://lists.opensource.org/pipermail/license-review_lists.opensource.org/2019-March/003989.html

But Elastic's move to SSPL seems to have triggered an explicit
statement of the OSI on the SSPL: https://opensource.org/node/1099 —
And the headline is quite clear: "The SSPL is Not an Open Source
License"

That statement sparked quite some discussion on Twitter:
https://twitter.com/OpenSourceOrg/status/1351605387347324929

Control: retitle -1 RFP: rnnoise -- noise suppression library based on a
recurrent neural network

I discovered in

OBS Studio can use rnnoise. So three Debian packages would use it.

  Description : GNU R functions for extraction of statistics from articles
and recomputing p values

 GNU R package for extraction of statistical references from a directory with
 HTML and PDF files. The package extracts statistical values (t and F
 statistics) from PDF files. The "pdftotext" program is used to convert PDF
 files to plain text files. By default a gui window is opened that allows
 you to choose the directory (using tcltk).

I'm working on the knitr packaging using debian-science's git at Salsa,
at https://salsa.debian.org/r-pkg-team/r-cran-statcheck .

Bye,

Joost

 This library is based on the diff-match-patch library. This library
 performs merges at a character level, as opposed to most VCS
 systems, which opt for a line-based approach.

  Description : Capture C-level output in context managers

A common task in Python (especially while testing or debugging) is to redirect
sys.stdout to a
stream or a file while executing some piece of code. However, simply
"redirecting stdout" is
sometimes not as easy as one would expect. In particular, things become
interesting when you want
C code running within your Python process (including, but not limited to,
Python modules
implemented as C extensions) to also have its stdout redirected according to
your wish. This
turns out to be tricky and leads us into the interesting world of file
descriptors, buffers and
system calls.

It is a dependency of lmfit.
It will be maintain in Debian-Science team.

  Description : command line interface for SoloKeys

Let's you manage your SoloKeys device, the first open-source FIDO2 security
key. One can generate key pairs, verify, update or rest the key.

I own two of those keys and they are very nice devices for general MFA but the
can actually do much more e.g. they will gain OpenPGP functionality in the
future.
To interact with them I would feel much more comfortable to be able to install
a Debian package than to download the python module via pip3. From what I see
all dependencies are already packaged.

annotations
 QIIME 2 is a powerful, extensible, and decentralized microbiome analysis
 package with a focus on data and analysis transparency. QIIME 2 enables
 researchers to start an analysis with raw DNA sequence data and finish with
 publication-quality figures and statistical results.
 Key features:
  * Integrated and automatic tracking of data provenance

 This package provides two syllabification algorithms: SonoriPy and
 LegaliPy.

 There will be no further updates to this package: SonoriPy has been
 incorporated into the NLTK library (python3-nltk) and that should be used
 in preference to this package. Both algorithms have also been incorporated
 into the Talisman NLP library for JavaScript.

  Upstream Author : Michaël Meyer
* URL : https://github.com/doukremt/distance
* License : GPL-3+, public-domain, BSD-1-clause
  Programming Lang: Python (with a disabled C library)
  Description : Python library for comparing sequences

 This package provides helpers for computing similarities between
 arbitrary sequences. Included metrics are Levenshtein, Hamming,
 Jaccard, and Sorensen distance, plus some bonuses. The distance
 computations are implemented in pure Python.

 This package is needed as a build dependency for
 python3-textdistance, which is a much more comprehensive Python
 package for calculating the distance between sequences.

 This package is a (recursive) dependency of the new Spyder 4.x
 series, hence the need to package it.

 There is an included C library which is optional but broken and so
 has been disabled.

 This package will be maintained within the Debian Python Team.

* Package name: ypbind
 Version : 2.7.2
 Upstream Author : Thorsten Kukuk
* URL : http://www.linux-nis.org/
* License : GPL, LGPL, BSD

 Description : Client daemon for working with Network Information System
(NIS)

 This package provides the multi-threading version of ypbind, required
 to implement a NIS client service for shared accounts and network names.

 NIS, originally known as Yellow Pages (YP), is mostly used to let

 several machines in a network share the same account information, such
 as the password file. It is an old, but simple system to share information,
 which should be used only in relatively trusted networks, due to its
 intrinsic limitations for security.

 Note:

 I'm re-organizing and modernizing the old `nis` all-in-one package, following
 the three distinct upstream source projects. The yp-tools is already present
 in the main archive since a couple of years.

* Package name: zmk
  Version : 0.1
  Upstream Author : Zygmunt Krynicki
* URL : https://github.com/zyga/zmk/
* License : LGPL-3
  Programming Lang: Make, Shell
  Description : collection of reusable Makefiles

Collection of makefiles implementing a system similar to autotools, but
without the generated files that make understanding system behaviour harder.
.
Highlights include:
.
 - Describe programs, test programs, static libraries, shared libraries,
   development headers, manual pages and more
 - Use familiar targets like "all", "check", "install" and "clean"
 - Works out of the box on popular distributions of Linux and MacOS
 - Friendly to distribution packaging expecting autotools
 - Compile natively with gcc, clang, tcc or the open-watcom compilers
 - Cross compile with gcc and open-watcom
 - Efficient and incremental, including the install target

This package is probably only useful to me and several of my colleagues
that follow my work. I'm working on documenting it extensively, so that
others can benefit from it as well.

A version of this package is bundled as a build system of the library
libzt. Similar to how autoconf, automake and libtool are often used to
assist in compiling C programs. With the release of libzt 0.3-1 this
build system handles nearly all of the Debian requirements for
configuration, cross-compiling, reproducible builds, building with clang
instead of gcc. As it matures it could be considered as a viable
alternative to the classic build toolchain.

I plan to maintain it myself but I welcome experience and advice from
all Debian Developers and Debian Maintainers. I need a sponsor for the
package.

The best idea is to transfer the project. You can do so at

https://salsa.debian.org/med-team/libzstd/edit
  --> Advanced
  --> Transfer

You need permissions to create repositories in pkg-rpm.

This ensures that people who visit the old URL will be forwarded to the
new location.

Kind regards

   Andreas.

I am looking for a new maintainer/co-maintainer for libzstd.
Initially it was packaged by the Debian-Med team as a dependency, but now
this library is also used in many other packages.
It doesn't fit Debian-Med namespace anymore and it would be better if
another team would adopt it.

Hi,

I'd be happy to step in as (co-)maintainer, or, if you prefer, we could
move the package to the pkg-rpm team, where the recently packaged
libdrpm and libzchunk depend on it.

Thanks a lot for taking care of libzstd in Debian!

G'luck,
Peter

Hi Peter,

Thank you! Yes, moving to pkg-rpm sounds good to me.
I can then try to join the pkg-rpm team in order to co-maintain libzstd.

What need to be done from my side to move it to the pkg-rpm namespace on
salsa.d.o ?

@Andreas, can we just move the git repo? is there a procedure for that?

Best regards,
Alex

Bug#980806: ITP: python-upsetplot -- Draw Lex et al.'s UpSet plots with Pandas and Matplotlib

2021-01-22 Thread Diane Trout
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Diane Trout

* Package name: python-upsetplot
  Version : 0.4.1
  Upstream Author : Joel Nothman
* URL : https://upsetplot.readthedocs.io/en/stable/
* License : BSD-3
  Programming Lang: Python
  Description : Draw Lex et al.'s UpSet plots with Pandas and Matplotlib

 This is another Python implementation of UpSet plots by Lex et al. [Lex2014]_.
 UpSet plots are used to visualise set overlaps; like Venn diagrams but
 more readable. Documentation is at https://upsetplot.readthedocs.io.
 .
 This upsetplot library tries to provide a simple interface backed by an
 extensible, object-oriented design.

I have found this package a useful way of generating UpSet style plots when
using Python, Matplotlib, and Pandas. I've seen several other groups in my
work's consortium using UpSet plots, so they do seem to be becoming more
popular, though I don't know who is using Python and who is using the R
version.

My hardest question is which team to put it in, Python, Science, or Med. I'm
tempted to go with the Science team as it's an advanced plotting library. I
think it was developed for bioinformatics but it's useful to anyone who wants
to compare a number of different sets.

  Description : Formulate test fixture tables in data structures

Test::FITesque is a framework designed to emulate the FIT
http://fit.c2.com framework, but with a more perlish touch. While it
is possible to use the FIT framework from within perl, it has a lot of
unnessecary overhead related to its origins in the Java world.

It can be used to formulate tests in a structured manner rather than
rely on doing it within a programming language. Such formulations are
known as fixture tables.

With this, you can
* store fixture tables in whatever format you want (JSON, YAML, Storable, etc)

* simplify the execution process to make it very transparent.

* use the normal Perl testing tools

* save the TAP output to more easily capture test results over time to
track regressions and problematic tests.

It also forms the basis for the Solid project test suite.
