 A package for generating things based on go files. This mechanism was
 first used in Kubernetes and is split out here for ease of reuse and

For the Ruby gems issue, bundling those as in Kubernetes resolution[0]
might be a way forward.

 A set of Go libraries that provide low-level,

 standard libs (https://golang.org/pkg/#stdlib).  Purpose As
 Kubernetes grows and spins functionality out of its core
 (https://github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes) and into cooperating

 leaf repositories to house shared code and avoid cycles in repository

Bug#984544: ITP: cryptopant -- IP Address Anonymization Library

2021-03-04 Thread Daniel Baumann
Package: wnpp

  * Package name : cryptoant
  * Upstream Author : ANT Lab, University of Southern California (USC)
  * License : GPL-2
  * Homepage : https://ant.isi.edu/software/cryptopANT/index.html

(the following is copied from the website, not the actual package
description to be used)

CryptopANT is a C library for IP address anonymization using crypto-PAn
algorithm, originally defined by Georgia Tech. The library supports
anonymization and de-anonymization (provided you possess a secret key)
of IPv4, IPv6, and MAC addresses. The software release includes sample
utilities that anonymize IP addresses in text, but we expect most use of
the library will be as part of other programs. The Crypto-PAn
anonymization scheme was developed by Xu, Fan, Ammar, and Moon at
Georgia Tech and described in "Prefix-Preserving IP Address
Anonymization", Computer Networks, Volume 46, Issue 2, 7 October 2004,
Pages 253-272, Elsevier. Our library is independent (and not binary
compatible) of theirs.

Daniel

Bug#984535: ITP: dnsperf -- accurate latency and throughput metrics for Domain Name Service (DNS)

2021-03-04 Thread Daniel Baumann
Package: wnpp

  * Package name : dnsperf
  * Upstream Author : DNS-OARC (https://www.dns-oarc.net)
  * License : Apache
  * Homepage : https://www.dns-oarc.net/tools/dnsperf

(the following is copied from the website, not the actual package
description to be used)

dnsperf and resperf are free tools developed by Nominum/Akamai
(2006-2018) and DNS-OARC (since 2019) that make it simple to gather
accurate latency and throughput metrics for Domain Name Service (DNS).
These tools are easy-to-use and simulate typical Internet, so network
operators can benchmark their naming and addressing infrastructure and
plan for upgrades. The latest version of the dnsperf and resperf can be
used with test files that include IPv6 queries.

dnsperf “self-paces” the DNS query load to simulate network conditions.
New features in dnsperf improve the precision of latency measurements
and allow for per packet per-query latency reporting is possible.
dnsperf is now multithreaded, multiple dnsperf clients can be supported
in multicore systems (each client requires two cores). The output of
dnsperf has also been improved so it is more concise and useful. Latency
data can be used to make detailed graphs, so it is simple for network
operators to take advantage of the data.

resperf systematically increases the query rate and monitors the
response rate to simulate caching DNS services.

Daniel

FYI, upstream is very hostile towards having their software in Debian
so I suggest you cease packaging this and anything that depends on it:

https://github.com/explosion/cython-blis/issues/32

The developers reference mentions that packaging software with hostile
upstream developers is often not a good idea.

https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/developers-reference/developer-duties.en.html#coordination-with-upstream-developers

"If you find that the upstream developers are or become hostile
towards Debian or the free software community, you may want to
re-consider the need to include the software in Debian. Sometimes the
social cost to the Debian community is not worth the benefits the
software may bring."

I think I will open an ITP for this package where we gather this
information (I can bounce your mails to the ITP bug once filed if you do
not want to write this again). This way we can document the issue.

I also intend to negotiate this again. While the copyright holders
are

 2018 The University of Texas at Austin
 2016 Hewlett Packard Enterprise Development LP
 2018 Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
 2019 ExplosionAI GmbH

the discussion was done with a single developer - well, looking at the
contributors graphs its the one with the vast majority of commits in
Github. I have not yet experienced this kind of hostility which IMHO
even contradicts the license text of the BSD-3-clause license.

But well, as I said I'll open an ITP and lets collect all relevant
information there.

Kind regards

 Andreas.
