Bug#903999: RFC about DFSG-freeness of PHP license [Re: Bug#903999: ITP: php-doc -- Documentation for PHP]

2023-01-08 Thread Nicholas D Steeves
Hi Athos,

Thank you for working on this RFP, and for doing all the work involved
with reintroduction the package.

I'm CCing the debian-legal team who I hope will be able to help with
the stylesheet question and related issues; I've given it my
best-effort, but would appreciate someone else's perspective

My reply, in context, follow inline:

Do you mean the PHP-3.0[-only] issue:

  https://lintian.debian.org/tags/license-problem-php-license

which appears to be the same as the PHP-3.1[-or-greater?] issue?

  https://ftp-master.debian.org/php-license.html

Is the problem you're referring appears to be that this license places
limitations on the use of the term "PHP"? Were this limitation on
endeavour, it would be non-DFSG, but honestly I'm a bit surprised that
php8.1 is in Debian main...eg: that it's DFSG-free.  I'm also not sure
why the Apache license isn't problematic for this same reason.

At any rate, as far as I can tell this is something for the ftpmasters
to worry about, so long as you follow the instructions at the above two
links as well as consulting the PHP package for examples. Ie this means
is that the debian/ subdir must have a more permissive license than the
PHP one (eg: Expat).

Oh my! Yes, after reading that issue (quoted below):

To me it sounds like 1. No rights to redistribute the website (in whole
or in part) are granted, except where the part is a separate project
with its own license (php-docs). 2. No one has a license to view,
download, or print the stylesheets.

Were the second claim to be maintained, a consequence of this would
seems to be that only the copyright holder[s] could build the
unpatched documentation without committing copyright infringement.

Good point; however, the Apache license allows relicensing (so long as
various conditions are met). Were the PHP project to not do this, they
would be in breach of the Apaache license, and we still wouldn't be able
to redistribute.

Given the copyright notice published to the PHP website, I think you're
right about how the only workaround is to replace their stylesheets!
Please note that network access is blocked during the builds of all
Debian packages (packages in non-free are not part of Debian).

I've pushed the recent changes. It's just mechanical updates and
Lintian fixes. I haven't taken a proper look at bugs.debian.org yet.

release tomorrow (~11 hours from now).

Hi John, I've uploaded the muon-meson package to Mentors:
https://mentors.debian.net/package/muon-meson/

It is also available on Salsa at
https://salsa.debian.org/tachi/muon-meson - somebody will eventually
move it to the debian namespace though.

Bug#1016722: cvmfs sponor

2023-01-08 Thread Stephan Lachnit
Hi Benda,

sorry for the late reply, I just didn't have time to look into it.

I am not able to build it from Salsa since I can't find the proper
source tarball - [1] does not seem to work. Could you write a
`debian/watch file` (see [2] for details) for easy downloading of the
source tarball?

Otherwise I think you should remove the unused externals in the
`externals` folder - you can do this via `debian/copyright` (see e.g.
[3], multiple lines allowd)

Cheers,
Stephan

Not yet. Atm, I've just been updating the shorewall/master branch then

* URL : https://github.com/intel/idxd-config
* License : LGPL-2.1
  Programming Lang: C
  Description : Utility for configuring the DSA subsystem for Linux

Intel Accelerator Utilities (accel-config) provides a user interface to the
Intel Data Streaming Accelerator (DSA). DSA is a high-performance data copy
and transformation accelerator integrated into Intel Xeon processors.

This package contains a utility for configuring the DSA (Data Stream
Accelerator) subsystem in the Linux kernel.

I currently maintain several Intel packages, and in the same way
as I maintain these I also plan to keep track of bugs and releases
with the assistance of the Intel developers and refresh the package
when appropriate.

 The oneAPI Level Zero (Level Zero) provides low-level direct-to-metal
 interfaces that are tailored to the devices in a oneAPI platform.
 Level Zero supports broader language features such as function pointers,
 virtual functions, unified memory, and I/O capabilities while also
 providing fine-grain explicit controls needed by higher-level runtime APIs.

  Description : Multi-point constraints with FEniCS-X

 This library contains an add-on to FEniCSx enabling the possibilities
 of enforce multi-point constraints. This can be used to for instance
 enforce slip conditions strongly.

This package is not part of the official FEniCS suite, hence not given
the fenics- prefix.

It may prove useful for systems with periodic boundary conditions.
These were supported by old dolfin, but apparently not in new dolfinx.

To be maintained by the Debian Science Team alongside the FEniCS
packages.

Closes: 1026079
Changes:
 dolfinx-mpc (0.5.0.post0-1) unstable; urgency=medium
 .
   * Initial release. (Closes: #1026079)
   * add debian patches
 - cmake_dolfinx_upper_version.patch imposes upper version on
   dolfinx and basix dependencies (enabling use of newer patch
   releases) and specifies dolfinx=0.5.2 (since upstream PR#2358 is
   not yet finished for handling dolfinx version ranges)
 - cmake_config_libdir.patch installs cmake config files to
   arch-dependent location
 - tests_no_numba.patch eliminates numba from python tests
   (numba is currently not available)
 - cmake_no_runpath.patch switches off RUNPATH in shared library
   and python extensions (.so)
   * Disable pybuild tests when building python modules. Unittest
 discover triggers a missing numba error, and is not used anyway.
   * tests are currently only run for python3.10.
 See https://github.com/FEniCS/dolfinx/issues/2423
   * use cache dir in local build dir to run tests
   * Build-Depends: pybuild-plugin-pyproject even though no
 pyproject.toml file is present. pyproject builds are now better
 and simpler than distutils (which runs the internal cmake
 configuration twice, once for the build rule, and again for the
 install rule).

  Upstream Author : Mark Gillard
* URL : https://marzer.github.io/tomlplusplus/
* License : MIT/Expat
  Programming Lang: C++
  Description : TOML config parser and serializer for C++17

Features:
- - Supports the latest TOML release (v1.0.0), plus optional support for some
unreleased TOML features
- - Passes all tests in the toml-test suite
- - Supports serializing to JSON and YAML
- - Proper UTF-8 handling (incl. BOM)
- - C++17 (plus some C++20 features where available, e.g. experimental support
for char8_t strings)
- - Doesn't require RTTI
- - Works with or without exceptions
- - Tested on Clang (6+), GCC (7+) and MSVC (VS2019)

  Description : Meson PEP 517 Python build backend

Python build backend (PEP 517) for Meson projects.

It enables Python package authors to use Meson as the build backend
for their packages.

Meson is a build system designed to increase programmer productivity.
It does this by providing a fast, simple and easy to use interface for
modern software development tools and practices.

meson-python is required to build scipy 1.9, which has started using
meson (and mesonpy) as a build system.

Probably best maintained by the Python Packaging Team,
but Jussi Pakkanen, maintainer of the meson package, might also be
interested to maintain meson-python.

 MessagePack encoding for Golang
 .
 Features
 .
  * Primitives, arrays, maps, structs, time.Time and interface{}.
  * Appengine \*datastore.Key and datastore.Cursor.
  * CustomEncoder/CustomDecoder interfaces for custom encoding.
  * Extensions to encode type information.
  * Renaming fields via msgpack:"my_field_name" and alias via
msgpack:"alias:another_name".
  * Omitting individual empty fields via msgpack:",omitempty" tag or all
empty fields in a struct.
  * Map keys sorting.
  * Encoding/decoding all structs as arrays or individual structs.
  * Encoder.SetCustomStructTag with Decoder.SetCustomStructTag
can turn msgpack into drop-in replacement for any tag.
  * Simple but very fast and efficient queries.

 This is a dependency for upcoming mender-connect packaging.

 Note that .v2 of this package is already available, but this is .v5.

  Description : utilities for managing network interfaces in Amazon EC2

amazon-ec2-net-utils provides udev integration and helper utilities to manage
network configuration in the Amazon EC2 cloud environment. It is responsible
for configuring systemd-networkd with appropriate configuration for DHCPv4 and
DHCPv6 as appropriate to the network environment in which an EC2 instance is
running. It supports policy routing configuration to ensure compliance with
Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) network anti-spoofing restrictions. IP aliasing
and prefix delegation are also supported.

I'm the upstream author and will maintain this package within the Debian cloud
team.

* Package name: golang-github-go-ozzo-ozzo-validation.v4
  Version : 4.3.0-1
  Upstream Author : Ozzo Framework
* URL : https://github.com/go-ozzo/ozzo-validation
* License : Expat
  Programming Lang: Go
  Description : idiomatic Go (golang) validation package.

 ozzo-validation is a Go package that provides configurable and extensible
 data validation capabilities. It has the following features:
 .
  * use normal programming constructs rather than error-prone struct tags
to specify how data should be validated.
  * can validate data of different types, e.g., structs, strings, byte
slices, slices, maps, arrays.
  * can validate custom data types as long as they implement the
Validatable interface.
  * can validate data types that implement the sql.Valuer interface (e.g.
sql.NullString).
  * customizable and well-formatted validation errors.
  * error code and message translation support.
  * provide a rich set of validation rules right out of box.
  * extremely easy to create and use custom validation rules.

 This package is a dependency for the upcoming mender-connect packaging.

 Opinionated Golang tag parser

 This is a dependency for the upcoming mender-connect packaging.
 (Actually a dep of golang-github-vmihailenco-msgpack.v5 and not
 mender-connect directly.)

 Note that an non-API-versioned version of this is already available

  Description : minimalistic but powerful vim-like hex editor

A minimalistic (< 2300 lines of C) vim-like hex editor.
It can display ASCII with colors, insert/replace/delete,
copy/paste, undo/redo, and search.

Very small, low latency, familiar interface, looks nice.

The package is already made. I'm new to packaging so I'll need a sponsor. I'd
like for it to be included in bullseye. It only depends on libc (according to
dpkg, >= 2.17). It could even go into buster and stretch I think, but I don't
know if that's possible/desirable.

This library is used by w_scan_cpp which is the successor of w_scan (w_scan is
not maintained anymore). w_scan_cpp & w_scan are from same author.

it is also used in https://salsa.debian.org/vdr-team/vdr-plugin-wirbelscan
but for now, it embeds the library while it could make use of librepfunc. so
at
least 2 packages would use this library: w-scan-cpp =& vdr-plugin-wirbelscan

see also this bug report asking for w_scan_cpp:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1000741

Idealy this would be maintained in the vdr team like w-scan and vdr-plugin-

  Description : A C++ library for working with SigMF metadata

Signal Metadata Format (SigMF)

Sharing sets of recorded signal data is an important part of science
and engineering. It enables multiple parties to collaborate, is often a
necessary part of reproducing scientific results (a requirement of
scientific rigor), and enables sharing data with those who do not have
direct access to the equipment required to capture it.

Unfortunately, these datasets have historically not been very portable,
and there is not an agreed upon method of sharing metadata descriptions
of the recorded data itself. This is the problem that SigMF solves.

By providing a standard way to describe data recordings, SigMF
facilitates the sharing of data, prevents the "bitrot" of datasets
wherein details of the capture are lost over time, and makes it
possible for different tools to operate on the same dataset, thus
enabling data portability between tools and workflows.

libsigmf is a free & opensource library for working with SigMF
recordings. (https://sigmf.org)

It was designed to enable the use of SigMF through static types in C++,
thus enabling things like compile-time errors and code inspection.

It was created and first authored by DeepSig Inc., and then released to
the community as an Apache 2.0-licensed FOSS project at FOSDEM 2019.

Bug#1024643: ITP: libspng -- simple, modern libpng alternative

Hi Bastian, yes, there's no "release" that currently uses libspng, but
mainly because Dolphin stopped making releases ages ago, recommending
users to use the beta versions instead ("The stable versions below are
years out of date and missing countless features and bug fixes. Beta or
development versions are a better choice for almost all users"). I
recall some discussions in the debian-games IRC about the intention to
start packaging newer commits, but I guess that never materialized.

Anyway, the Dophin thing was just a plus. I'd like to have spng in
Debian to make C development on the distro easier; I see great value in
having a large number of -dev packages, even if they are leaf packages.

  Description : modern high-performance serialization utilities for Python3
 Serialization is hard, especially across Python versions and multiple
 platforms. After dealing with many subtle bugs over the years
 (encodings, locales, large files) libraries like spaCy and Prodigy
 have steadily grown a number of utility functions to wrap the multiple
 serialization formats we need to support (especially json, msgpack and
 pickle). To avoid duplication these functions were put in one place.

* Package name: snippy
  Version : 4.6.0
  Upstream Author : Torsten Seemann
* URL : https://github.com/tseemann/snippy/
* License : GPL-2+
  Programming Lang: (C, C++, C#, Perl, Python, etc.)
  Description : rapid haploid variant calling and core genome alignment
 Snippy finds SNPs between a haploid reference genome and your NGS
 sequence reads. It will find both substitutions (snps) and
 insertions/deletions (indels). It will use as many CPUs as you can give
 it on a single computer (tested to 64 cores). It is designed with speed
 in mind, and produces a consistent set of output files in a single
 folder. It can then take a set of Snippy results using the same
 reference and generate a core SNP alignment (and ultimately a
 phylogenomic tree).

Bug#1028188: ITP: python-validate-pyproject -- Automated checks on pyproject.toml by JSON Schema definitions

2023-01-08 Thread Carsten Schoenert
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Carsten Schoenert
X-Debbugs-Cc: debian-de...@lists.debian.org

* Package name: python-validate-pyproject
  Version : 0.10.1
  Upstream Contact: Anderson Bravalheri
* URL : https://github.com/abravalheri/validate-pyproject
* License : BSD, MIT, MPL-2.0
  Programming Lang: Python
  Description : Automated checks on pyproject.toml by JSON Schema
definitions

 With the approval of PEP 517 and PEP 518, the Python community shifted
 towards a strong focus on standardisation for packaging software, which
 allows more freedom when choosing tools during development and make sure
 packages created using different technologies can interoperate without the
 need for custom installation procedures.
 .
 This shift became even more clear when PEP 621 was also approved, as a
 standardised way of specifying project metadata and dependencies.
 .
 validate-pyproject was born in this context, with the mission of validating
 pyproject.toml files, and make sure they are compliant with the standards
 and PEPs. Behind the scenes, validate-pyproject relies on JSON Schema files,
 which, in turn, are also a standardised way of checking if a given data
 structure complies with a certain specification.

This package is a dependency for pdm-backend (not yet filed a ITP) and
will be maintained within the Debian Python team.

Upstream uses a vendored version of fastjsonschema shipped in the folder
src/validate_pyproject/_vendor/. The reasoning isn't currently clear why
this is needed. Due this vendoring there are multiple licenses comes to
play.
I've tried to entagle this vendoring but hadn't luck until yet.

pdm-backend calles itself it is the successor for pdm-pep517 but hasn't
reached a stable version number yet.
