2023-09-12 Thread Tiago Bortoletto Vaz
retitle 972439 RFP: tailscale -- wireguard overlay network manager (client)
thanks

I'm refraining from packaging tailscale for Debian.
I ITP'ed without looking further, as I was excited to hack it during the going
on Debconf.

Status:

 - Among its direct dependencies, 39 will need to be packaged.
 - I had a quick look at them, and many will have extra dependencies to be
packaged as well.
 - Then I looked at the upstream view on a official Debian package for
tailscale and got some extra discouragement:

https://github.com/tailscale/tailscale/issues/7847#issuecomment-1503731931

All in all, I wish good luck to the brave one who takes on this job.

Bug#1051812: RFP: vosk-api -- Offline speech recognition API

2023-09-12 Thread Antoine Beaupre
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: vosk-api
  Version : 0.3.45
  Upstream Contact: Alpha Cephei
* URL : https://alphacephei.com/vosk/
* License : Apache-2.0
  Programming Lang: Jupyter, C++, Python, Java, ...
  Description : Offline speech recognition API

Vosk is an offline open source speech recognition toolkit. It enables
speech recognition for 20+ languages and dialects - English, Indian
English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Russian,
Turkish, Vietnamese, Italian, Dutch, Catalan, Arabic, Greek, Farsi,
Filipino, Ukrainian, Kazakh, Swedish, Japanese, Esperanto, Hindi,
Czech, Polish.

Vosk models are small (50 Mb) but provide continuous large vocabulary
transcription, zero-latency response with streaming API,
reconfigurable vocabulary and speaker identification.

Speech recognition bindings implemented for various programming
languages like Python, Java, Node.JS, C#, C++, Rust, Go and others.

Vosk supplies speech recognition for chatbots, smart home appliances,
virtual assistants. It can also create subtitles for movies,
transcription for lectures and interviews.

Vosk scales from small devices like Raspberry Pi or Android smartphone
to big clusters.

Debian has been shipping speech recognition software for a
while, mostly in the form of Sphinx, which is... well, it's not as
good as one would imagine those things to be.

Historically, such programs used to be extremely inaccurate and
largely in the realm of sci-fi and play things, but recent advances in
machine learning have shown tremendous progress in this area, which
makes it possible make use of (free!) software to enable voice-driven
applications of all sorts.

vosk is an API layer that can be used by other programs to implement
such solutions, and I think it would be a great addition to Debian.

The models are small and all free although the licenses vary:

https://alphacephei.com/vosk/models

Also, it could be possible to just package the API bits without
shipping the models in Debian, which of course would be less useful,
but more useful than nothing.

I'm not exactly sure what our policy is on models, actually: the
license of the models above is "free" in the sense that you can get
the binary and do what you want with it, but i'm not sure it would
pass the smell test of "wait, but where's the training data" kind of
stuff. I leave that to people more familiar with those sticky issues
and focus this RFP on the software side of things.

Also bewarned that I'm only peripherally familiar with ML and current
developments in AI. I mostly fell (again) on vosk because of Numen:

https://numenvoice.org/

There are other models out there, that might be better targets. For
example, "is a tensor library for machine learning
to enable large models and high performance on commodity hardware. It
is used by llama.cpp and whisper.cpp". But the latter two are on
relatively shakier legal grounds, as far as Debian is concerned.

There's also Mozilla's , "an
open source embedded (offline, on-device) speech-to-text engine which
can run in real time on devices ranging from a Raspberry Pi 4 to high
power GPU servers."

And there's a whole area of "home assistants" that have their own way
of doing things. This is just one of them, and I would be happy to
hear what's the best solution for this problem space.

* Package name: python-bitmath
  Version : 1.3.3.1
  Upstream Contact: Tim Bielawa
* URL : https://github.com/tbielawa/bitmath
* License : Expat
  Programming Lang: Python
  Description : handle file sizes with different prefix notations

 bitmath simplifies many facets of interacting with file sizes in various units.
 Originally focusing on file size unit conversion, functionality now includes:
  * Converting between SI and NIST prefix units (kB to GiB)
  * Converting between units of the same type (SI to SI, or NIST to NIST)
  * Automatic human-readable prefix selection (like in hurry.filesize)
  * Basic arithmetic operations (subtracting 42KiB from 50GiB)
  * Rich comparison operations (1024 Bytes == 1KiB)
  * bitwise operations (<<, >>, &, |, ^)
  * Reading a device's storage capacity (Linux/OS X support only)
  * argparse integration as a custom type
  * click integration as a custom parameter type
  * progressbar integration as a better file transfer speed widget
  * String parsing
  * Sorting
 .
 In addition to the conversion and math operations, bitmath provides human
 readable representations of values which are suitable for use in interactive
 shells as well as larger scripts and applications. The format produced for
 these representations is customizable via the functionality included in stdlibs
 string.format.

I intend to maintain this package as part of DPT.

  Description : Node.js library to generate style sheets

JSS is an authoring tool for CSS which allows you to use JavaScript to
describe styles in a declarative, conflict-free and reusable way. It can
compile in the browser, server-side or at build time in Node.
JSS is framework agnostic. It consists of multiple packages: the core,
plugins, framework integrations and others.

This package is a dependency of JupyterLab. It'll be maintained under JS
Team umbrella.

* URL : https://cpucycles.cr.yp.to/download.html

  Programming Lang: C
  Description : Microlibrary for counting CPU cycles

libcpucycles understands machine-level cycle counters for amd64 (both PMC and
TSC), arm32, arm64 (both PMC and VCT), mips64, ppc32, ppc64, riscv32, riscv64,
sparc64, and x86. libcpucycles also understands four OS-level mechanisms, which
give varying levels of accuracy: mach_absolute_time, perf_event,
CLOCK_MONOTONIC, and, as a fallback, microsecond-resolution gettimeofday.

When the program first calls cpucycles(), libcpucycles automatically benchmarks
the available mechanisms and selects the mechanism that does the best job.
Subsequent cpucycles() calls are thread-safe and very fast. An accompanying
cpucycles-info program prints a summary of cycle-counter accuracy.

Well, the upstream is indeed not very active (the latest commit is on 13
Mar this year). I admit that it looks more like an abandonware, but
probably someone™ could step forward and care for it (I personally lack
the relevant competence). Recently I had to convert LaTeX source (XeTeX,
in fact) to HTML and in fact the best result I got was with
LaTeX->PDF->HTML, where the last convertion was done with this
pdf2htmlex. It produced HTML document which looks exactly like PDF
produced by LaTeX. So, I thought that this tool can be of use to someone
else.

Cheers!
Lev

Bug#1038403:

2023-09-12 Thread Arturo Ingenito
I support this request, as a new user who experience Debian I think lack of a
user friendly interface to manage minor update to packages, but also to help
transition from a major release of Debian, like do mint-updater or
update-manager (from ubuntu) for not technical user.

I think as MVP that only manage update and major update could be enough.
Yes I know there is already UnattendedUpgrades package, but it lacks of user
frienldy ui and only do minor update not a major of OS
(https://wiki.debian.org/UnattendedUpgrades)
There is also a wiki page in Debian for AutomatedUpgrade, that summarizes the
problem explaining how Ubuntu handle it
(https://wiki.debian.org/AutomatedUpgrade)

Can we start from a fork of this tools and integrate in Debian?

Thanks

 most of the features that this command has.
 .
 Features:
 .
 - API inspired by 'kubectl' to reduce the developer learning curve.
 - Sensible standards for reducing boilerplate.
 - No hubris-generated code, just human-readable code.
 - It also has an asynchronous API that can be used with 'asyncio' and 'trio'.
 - Client caching to reduce API object passing.
 - Batteries included providing useful utilities and methods inspired by
   'kubectl'.

you are aware that pdf2htmlex used to be part of Debian? It is still in
old-old-stable. It was removed with this bug:

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=921471

Are you sure it is wise to include that package into Debian again? The issue
tracker is very low on activity:

https://github.com/pdf2htmlEX/pdf2htmlEX/issues

Thanks!

cheers, josch

Bug#1051758: ITP: python-ruyaml -- YAML 1.2 loader/dumper package for Python

2023-09-12 Thread Carsten Schoenert
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Carsten Schoenert
X-Debbugs-Cc: debian-de...@lists.debian.org

* Package name: python-ruyaml
  Version : 0.91.0
  Upstream Contact: Anthon van der Neut, Ruamel bvba

Sorin Sbarnea
* URL : https://github.com/pycontribs/ruyaml
* License : MIT
  Programming Lang: Python
  Description : YAML 1.2 loader/dumper package for Python

 The ruyaml package is a fork of ruamel.yaml aimed to made in order to secure
 the future of the library, mainly by having a pool of maintainers and can be
 used as a drop-in replacement for python3-ruamel.yaml.

This package is a dependency for yamlfix (a simple opinionated yaml
formatter that keeps your comments) which I intend to package to.

Packaging will happen within the Debian Python Team.

Bug#1051749: RFP: rust-compact-str -- A memory efficient string type that can store up to 24 bytes on the stack

2023-09-12 Thread Agathe Porte
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
X-Debbugs-Cc: gag...@debian.org

* Package name: rust-compact-str
  Version : 0.7.1
  Upstream Contact: Parker Timmerman
* URL : https://github.com/ParkMyCar/compact_str
* License : MIT
  Programming Lang: Rust
  Description : A memory efficient string type that can store up to 24
bytes on the stack

A CompactString is a more memory efficient string type, that can store
smaller strings on the stack, and transparently stores longer strings on
the heap (aka a small string optimization). It can mostly be used as a
drop in replacement for String and are particularly useful in parsing,
deserializing, or any other application where you may have smaller
strings.

This is a dependency needed for python-orjson [1].
