Bug#201483: RFA: surfraw -- a fast unix command line interface to WWW

2003-07-15 Thread Christian Surchi
Package: wnpp
Version: N/A; reported 2003-07-16
Severity: normal

I see that there are several very active maintainers interested in it... I
don't want to waste this effort and I think it's a good thing, so...

I request an adopter for the surfraw package.
The package description is:
Surfraw - Shell Users' Revolutionary Front Rage Against the World Wide Web
 .
Surfraw provides a fast unix command line interface to a variety of
popular WWW search engines and other artifacts of power. It reclaims
google, altavista, dejanews, freshmeat, research index, slashdot
and many others from the false-prophet, pox-infested heathen lands of
html-forms, placing these wonders where they belong, deep in unix
heartland, as god loving extensions to the shell.
 .
Surfraw abstracts the browser away from input. Doing so lets it get
on with what it's good at. Browsing. Interpretation of linguistic
forms is handed back to the shell, which is what it, and human
beings are good at. Combined with incremental text browsers, such
as links, w3m (or even lynx), and screen(1), or netscape-remote
a Surfraw liberateur is capable of research speeds that leave
GUI tainted idolaters agape with fear and wonder.

How is pushmail better than ssmtp, which sounds like it does the same
 thing, and also Provides: mail-transport-agent?

You have already the answer. ssmtp is an MTA, and pushmail (see the
description above) allows to push mail *without* an MTA.
ssmtp sends mail to your mail hub, only mail to your configured mail
host; pushmail allows different pushes, with different
servers, different ports, different authentication
methods, *SSL* support, per user configuration, pre-exec.
Look at pushmail man page for details.

This name is very much in conflict with widespread use of Distributed
Authoring and Versioning (RFC2518, aka WEBDAV). For example:

I know dav and webdav, and btw I sent only an RFP. :)

 libapache-mod-dav - A DAV module for Apache
libapache2-dav-svn - Apache module for Subversion - in development, alpha
 libhttp-dav-perl - HTTP:DAV - WebDAV client library for Perl.
python-davlib - WebDAV client library for Python
sitecopy - A program for managing a WWW site via FTP, DAV or HTTP
xsitecopy - A program for managing a WWW site via FTP, DAV or HTTP(GNOME
 version)

A name change would be a small but significant contribution to the
 namespace.

Maybe... but I'm not so sure because DAV is the name of the editor...
Do you have suggestion?

However... there's no ITP yet! :)

Description : a calculator program similiar in some aspects to bc and

Genius is an arbitrary precision integer and multiple precision floating
point calculator. It includes its own programming language similiar in some
aspects to C,bc or pascal. It can deal with rational numbers and complex
numbers. It has matrix support as well. It uses the gmp library so it is
very fast for calculations of large numbers. It has a command line and a
GNOME interface.

What can it do?

* Arbitrary precision ints, multiple precision floats, using all the
  power of gmp.
* Rational numbers, stored as quotient and denominator.
* Complex numbers, stored in cartesian coordinates as usual.
* Automatic typing, no need to declare types of variables.
* Math-like-looking expressions, tries to be as much a what you mean is
what Genius understands, up to a limit of course.
* Matrix calculations, with many related functions.
* Modular arithmetic, including inversions and modular arithmetic on
  matrices.
* A complete programming language, define your own functions. In fact
larg part of Genius standard library is written in this.
* CAN output matrices in LaTeX or Troff (eqn), this is I think a very
cool feature that allows you to copy stuff directly from the Genius
console
to a document in LaTeX or troff. I in fact use this even to just enter
matrices into documents to begin with.
* A plugin interface, not yet really used.

What WILL it do? (stuff that I'm planning to add at some point)

* Graphing
* Polynomial handling

 Just like nullmailer, masqmail, ssmtp?

Maybe the first ones... ssmtp is another thing.

Bug#87385: About who will package gnoise for Debian

2002-01-20 Thread Christian Surchi
Hi Michael.

Now, there is an ITP filed by Christian Surchi about one year ago.

Christian, do you still intend to upload Debian packages? If so, when
will that be? In that case you will be the maintainer of course.

I made the ITP but then I rethought about it because I was not so sure
about the package and its development. Then I had no time to check it
again. :|

If not, what do you mean by 'Thorsten maintains the package'? Are you a
Debian Developer, Thorsten? (I could not find you in the database) Do
you need a Sponsor? Where are your packages located?

I don't know anything about this Thorsten.

If neither of you wants to package it, I will go forth.

Please, do it, I don't think I could handle it soon, and I'm not using
it too.

thanks
Christian

Bug#95632: ITP: hasciicam -- ascii for the masses

2001-04-28 Thread Christian Surchi
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

Hasciicam makes it possible to have live ascii video on the web. It
captures video from a tv card and renders it into ascii, formatting the
output into an html page with a refresh tag or in a live ascii window or
in a simple text file as well, giving the possiblity to anybody that has a
bttv card. a linux box and a cheap modem line to show a live asciivideo
feed that can be browsable without any need for plugin, java etc.
