Bug#1072829: RFP: texmacs -- WYSIWYG mathematical text editor using TeX fonts

2024-06-08 Thread Jerome BENOIT
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: texmacs
  Version : 2.1.4
  Upstream Author : Joris van der Hoeven
* URL : https://www.texmacs.org
* License : GPL
  Programming Lang: C++
  Description : WYSIWYG mathematical text editor using TeX fonts

Please re-introduce TeXmacs. It might be used as an alternative to
Jupyter as notebook interface for Computer Alagebraic System (CAS)
as sagemath. The former package provides the following description:

GNU TeXmacs is a free scientific text editor, which was both inspired
by TeX and GNU Emacs.

The editor allows you to write structured documents via a WYSIWYG
(what-you-see-is-what-you-get) and a user friendly interface. New
styles may be created by the user. The program implements
high-quality typesetting algorithms and TeX fonts, which help you to
produce professionally looking documents.

The high typesetting quality still goes through for automatically
generated formulas, which makes TeXmacs suitable as an interface for
computer algebra systems. TeXmacs also supports the Guile/Scheme
extension language, so that you may customize the interface and write
your own extensions to the editor.

Bug#1003419: ITP: primecount -- fast prime number counter C/C++ library

2022-01-09 Thread Jerome Benoit
Package: wnpp

Owner: Jerome Benoit
X-Debbugs-Cc: debian-de...@lists.debian.org

* Package name: primecount
  Version : 7.2
  Upstream Author : Kim Walisch
* URL : https://github.com/kimwalisch/primecount
* License : BSD-2-clause
  Programming Lang: C/C++
  Description : fast prime number counter C/C++ library

primecount is a command-line program and C/C++ library that counts
the primes below an integer x <= 10**31 using highly optimized
implementations of the combinatorial prime counting algorithms.

primecount includes implementations of all important combinatorial
prime counting algorithms known up to this date all of which have
been parallelized using OpenMP. primecount contains the first ever
open source implementations of the Deleglise-Rivat algorithm and
Xavier Gourdon's algorithm (that works). primecount also features
a novel load balancer that is shared amongst all implementations
and that scales up to hundreds of CPU cores. primecount has already
been used to compute several prime counting function world records.

primecount will be part of sagemath.

I am planning to maintain primecount in behalf of the
Debian Math Team. Notice that I am actually maintaining
a related package by the same author, primesieve.

some Python packages may still depend on their last implementation, hence this
Debian package which is meant to smooth the transition.

Before the ITP submission, I contacted the former package maintainer:
1] when he submitted the ROM he was not aware that Sage[Math] depends on
speaklater (Sage[Math] is being ported to Debian [1]);
2] he encourage me to revive the package if I think it is necessary.

Otherwise, I will of course take into account the previous maintenance work,
even if I paln to maintain through git
rather than SVN; my first work will be to migrate from SVN to git).

  Description : interactive visualization of algebraic surfaces

 Surfer-alggeo-gtk is based on the script driven tool Surf and offers an
 intuitive user interface to create images, multiple layers of images and
 animations. Additionally it contains a series of sample galleries with
 explanations.
 .
 Mathematically, the program visualizes real algebraic geometry in real-time.
 The surfaces shown are given by the zero set of a polynomial equation in
 the variables x, y and z. All points in space that solve the equation are
 displayed and form the surface. The program contains a series of sample
 galleries for a good starting point. It also allows a lot of advanced
 settings and is hence also suitable for Surfer “experts” that want to
 design complicated surfaces.

Bug#596005: Sponsering request for testu01

2015-05-24 Thread Jerome BENOIT

Hi Andreas,

thanks for the review.

On 24/05/15 08:48, Andreas Tille wrote:
 Hi Jerome,

 file debian/Debian with zero bytes. What's the purpose of this file?

This is a mistake: I have no clue on how this file arrived there.
I will wipe it out.

 In debian/copyright you exclude a lot of files including usual automake
 files

the autotools machinery is revisited:
basically wiping them out allows a clean git-build

 and also the AUTHORS and ChangeLog file.

Those files are empty.

  What's the rationale of
 this? Would you mind documenting this in debian/README.source?

Indeed I should comment this; I will do so soon.

  This
 might help other team members in case there might be a need to work on
 the package.

 I'm a bit unsure about the 12MB file debian/adhoc/examples/RandomOrg.bin
 May be you also meniton this to get some better understanding why exactly
 this is needed, and where to read about its purpose.

In the d/copyright file there is some comment about it.
Basically it replaces a non distributed data file that is used by one of the
sample
C source file. The idea is to keep the examples working.
The missing file is very heavy, obsolete according to the upstream maintainers,
and, not the least, they are very reluctant to put it back.
I will add comment to clarify.

 In the ITP of this package there was some discussion about the chance
 that the code might be released under GPL. Did you contacted upstream
 or asked for a status update to those people who discussed in the ITP?

I contacted the people who discussed in the ITP: so I have got no feed back
so far. Note that the RFP is quite old.

I also contacted the upstream team, according to them the code might be
released under GPL3+
soon: this decision must be taken by their hosting University, not by them.

 You should contact the ITP owner anyway before we upload the package.

Initially it was an RFP submitted by Christoph Anton Mitterer, and now I am the
ITP owner
(I contacted both of them before to do so).

 Kind regards

  Andreas.

Thanks,
Jerome

 I had a check of the packaging and think it is fine so far. However, I
 have a question about your way you are creating the source tarball. It
 seems the debian/repack script is basically removing files from the
 original download. Since some time this can be done via Files-Excluded
 in debian/copyright (see man uscan). I personally (well, I'm biased
 since I invented this method ;-)) consider this way more transparent
 than separate scripts and the result is more simple packaging. Do you
 have better reasons than I was just not aware about this option to
 not choose this way?

I was aware about this option.
I think this option is rather meant for clean upstream source:
here the upstream source tarball is polluted with .svn folders and a couple
of regular source files (C++ source + header) with an executable bit:
an ad hoc repack script seems then more appropriate.

 BTW, I consider d/changelog as way to long. For a new package simply

* Initial release (Closes: #777132).

 is sufficient and the prefered form by ftpmaster. If you have no good
 reasons to mention all the details please remove them.

I like so much to show my effort. Whatever, I have just removed it.

 Kind regards

  Andreas.

  Description : tool to visualize some real algebraic geometry

Surf is a tool to visualize some real algebraic geometry: plane algebraic
curves, algebraic surfaces and hyperplane sections of surfaces. Surf is script
driven and has (optionally) a nifty GUI using the Gtk widget set.

The algorithms should be stable enough not to be confused by curve/surface
singularities in codimension greater than one and the degree of the surface
or curve. This has been achieved quite a bit. We have drawn curves of degree
up to 30 and surfaces of degree up to 20 successfully. However, there are
examples of curves/surfaces of lower degree where surf fails to produce
perfect images. This happens especially if the equation of the curve/surface
is not reduced. Best results are achieved using reduced equations. On the other
hand, surf displays the Fermat-curves accurately for degree up to 98.

Surf is free software distributed under the GNU General Public License (GPL).

Bug#776019: ITP: normaliz -- math tool for computations in affine monoids, and rational polytopes and cones

2015-01-22 Thread Jerome Benoit

  Programming Lang: C++, Java
  Description : math tool for computations in affine monoids, and rational
polytopes and cones

Normaliz is a mathematical tool for computations in affine monoids, vector
configurations, lattice polytopes, and rational cones.

Its input data can be specified in terms of:
- a system of generators or vertices;
- a system of linear Diophantine equations, inequalities and
congruences;
- a binomial ideal.
Normaliz computes:
- the dual cone of a rational cone (in other words, given generators,
  Normaliz computes the defining hyperplanes, and vice versa);
- a placing (or lexicographic) triangulation of a vector configuration
  (resulting in a triangulation of the cone generated by it);
- the Hilbert basis of a rational cone;
- the lattice points of a rational polytope;
- the lattice points of a rational (unbounded) polyhedron;
- the normalization of an affine monoid;
- the Hilbert (or Ehrhart) series and the Hilbert (or Ehrhart) (quasi)
  polynomial under a Z-grading (for example, for rational polytopes);
- Ehrhart series for semiopen cones;
- generalized (or weighted) Ehrhart series and Lebesgue integrals of
  polynomials over rational polytopes via NmzIntegrate (also in the
  semiopen case);
- a description of the cone and lattice under consideration by a
system of inequalities, equations and congruences.

Normaliz can be started from the command line or from the GUI interface: the
user indicates the type of input data in an input file and controls the
computation and the output via the GUI interface or command line options.

* License : Public Domain
  Programming Lang: raw data
  Description : Parallel/Multiprocessor Ray Tracing Software -- extra
documents

 Tachyon is a portable, high performance parallel ray tracing system
 supporting MPI and multithreaded implementations. Tachyon is built
 as a C callable library, which can be used with the included demo
 programs or within your own application. The distribution also
 includes a simple scene file parser front-end which reads a few
 different formats.
 .
 Tachyon implements all of the basic geometric primitives such as
 triangles, planes, spheres, cylinders, etc. Some of the goals in
 developing Tachyon were to make it fast and for it to parallelize
 well. These are what set it apart from more full-featured programs
 like POV-Ray, Rayshade, and others. Tachyon supports enough features
 to be an excellent alternative to slower programs for demanding
 animation and scientific visualization tasks. As time goes on,
 Tachyon will indeed incorporate more features, but with a continued
 emphasis on rendering performance.
 .
 This package provides extra (large) documents needed by some scene or
 C source examples provided in the tachyon-doc package.

* Package name: apophenia
  Version : 0.999
  Upstream Author : Ben Klemens fluffm...@f-m.fm
* URL : http://apophenia.info/
* License : GPL2 with modifications
  Programming Lang: C
  Description : open source C scientific library for statistical computing

The Apophenia Statistical Library is an open source C library for working
with data sets and statistical models. It provides functions on the same
level as those of the typical stats packages (such as OLS, probit, or
singular value decomposition) but gives the user more flexibility to be
creative in model-building.

Apophenia is written to scale well, to comfortably work with gigabyte
data sets, million-step simulations, or computationally-intensive
agent-based models.

Apophenia builds upon the GNU Scientific and SQLite libraries,
MySQL/mariaDB is also supported. The core functions are written in C,
but experience has shown them to be easy to bind in Python, Julia,
Perl, Ruby, etc. The source code is available under the GNU General
Public License version 2 (GPL2) with two modifications.

  Description : multi-precision rational interval arithmetic library

GNU MPRIA is a mathematical C library for rational interval arithmetic
computations with arbitrary precision.

The basic principle of rational interval arithmetic consists in enclosing
every number by a rational interval containing it: each number is stored
as its lower and upper endpoints and these bounds are rational numbers;
their absolute difference measures the precision. The purpose is on the
right hand to obtain guaranteed results, thanks to interval computation,
and on the left hand to compute accurate results, thanks to arbitrary
precision arithmetic.

The arithmetic operations are extended for interval operands in such
a way that the exact result of the operation belongs to the computed
rational interval.

The GNU MPRIA library is built upon the GNU MP library for operating
on rational numbers.

It is a Debian package for a GAP package, as such it must be

may a sub-project be opened ?

2013-10-05 Thread Jerome BENOIT

Hello,

thanks for the review.

On 05/10/13 21:15, Bill Allombert wrote:

 Are you sure this is the right license ?

License are not my cup of tea.

 The website says:
   MPFR C++ is free for usage in free projects. If you intend to use it in
 commercial application please contact author for permission.

To be frank, I also noticed the issue, so I asked to the upstream maintainer
to clarify the license of his software library.

He answered that he will but as he seemed overwhelmed I step forward.
After my deposit, he confirmed his wish and will to revisit his policy and
the packaging, but first he has to deal with a project dead line.

 The file mpreal.h says:
 This library is free software; you can redistribute it and/or
 modify it under the terms of the GNU Lesser General Public
 License as published by the Free Software Foundation; either
 version 2.1 of the License, or (at your option) any later version.
 ...

 are met:

 1. Redistributions of source code must retain the above copyright

 2. Redistributions in binary form must reproduce the above copyright
 notice, this list of conditions and the following disclaimer in the
 documentation and/or other materials provided with the distribution.

 3. The name of the author may not be used to endorse or promote products
 derived from this software without specific prior written permission.

 So I would says LGPL 2.1+ AND BSD-3-clause (and maybe non-commercial).

Ok, I will forward your remarks to the upstream maintainer.

 Other than that, I wonder at the benefit of packaging a single header file
 as a Debian package.

Let say that his software holds in a long C++ header: from a C++ point of view
it makes sense, I guess.

 Also, everytime you update it, you will need to rebuild the packages that
 Build-Depends on it to keep them up-to-date.

I am aware: I also asked to the upstream maintainer to provide a source tarball
compatible with Debian watch. We are working on it: some appropriate tweaks at
bitbucket.org, where is maintained its mercurial repository, may bring
appropriate
material.

As soon as both the License issues are fixed by the upstream maintainer and an
appropriate source tarball is provided, I will revisit accordingly the Debian
package.

Thanks.

Best wishes,
Jerome

 Cheers,
 Bill.

MPFR C++ introduces new C++ type for high precision floating point

all arithmetic and boolean operators (+, -, *, /, , !=, etc.) are
implemented through operator overloading technique; classical
mathematical functions (sqrt, pow, sin, cos, etc.) are supported too.

TMPFR C++ makes possible to use MPFR calculations in the same simple
way as calculations with numbers of built-in types double or float.

Good assumption

  It
 would be nice to CC debian-science@lists.d.o in ITP bugs and also to
 mention the version control system location of your packaging.

Once I have a decent stuff I will put it at alioth/debian-science .

 Kind regards and thanks for working on mplapack

I hope it will not be so challenging.

  Description : utility for creating Maple Debian packages

Maple is a commercial Computer Algebra System (CAS) manufactured by the
Canadian software company MapleSoft, a division of Waterloo Maple Inc..

This package will be meant to provide the capability to build Debian
packages from the install material distributed by Maple by running a
dedicated bash script that will mainly invoke a Makefile through the
dh(1) tools. The aim of the game is to gain a (far) more comfortable
integration of Maple into Debian systems.

This package itself will be a native Debian package (Section: contrib/misc)
governed by GPL-2+, but the Maple software will have to be purchased by
the final user and will obviously remain governed by the copyright holder
(MapleSoft, namely Waterloo Maple Inc.). This package will simply help
the final user to create her/his/its own Maple packages and it will be
her/his/its responsability to use the resulting package responsibly.

This PAM module provides single sign-on behavior for SSH.
The user types an SSH passphrase when logging in and is
authenticated if the passphrase successfully decrypts the
user's SSH private key. In the PAM session phase, an ssh-agent
process is started and keys are added. For the entire session,
the user can SSH to other hosts that accept key authentication

As much as I can see, the package is still in Debian (though removed
from Wheezy).

You shouldn't open an ITP for a package that is already in the archive.
If your intention is to adopt the package, then you should follow the
MIA process, have the package orphaned, then rename the orphaned
bug as ITA (Intention To Adopt) adopt it by uploading new versions.
And for that, there's no need for an ITP.

According to its PTS ( http://packages.qa.debian.org/libp/libpam-ssh.html ):
[2011-12-03] libpam-ssh REMOVED from testing (Britney)
[2011-12-02] Removed 1.92-14 from unstable (Alexander Reichle-Schmehl)

So the ITP is justified.

Best regards,
Jerome

Thanks for your intention to adopt this package,
Cheers,
