was what prompted one of the binary packages built from it to be moved

Thanks for looking into it. I'll apply the patch for git in jessie+1.

Bug#702697: RFP: git-remote-bzr -- bidirectional bridge between Git and Bazaar

I would be happy to sponsor you if you want to maintain it. If not I
guess I will have to maintain it since I really need these packages.

Thanks. I also wouldn't mind co-maintaining since bugs may sometimes
point to issues in git's remote helper code.

It might be better to make git-bzr a transitional package and create a
git-remote-bzr package which does not need an epoch.

Jonathan, do you have any comments on how the transition should be done?

What Sven said makes sense to me: a single source package with a
transitional git-bzr package that depends on the main git-remote-bzr
package. Then only the git-bzr package would need an epoch. git-bzr
was never part of a stable release so it would just be needed for a
little while for people using sid, testing, or stable-backports. It's
not necessarily needed in the jessie release.

I can add a Recommends to the git-all package to make the package more
discoverable if you like.

Thanks,
Jonathan

Well, it would have been _a little bit_ more user friendly to prepare a
package *before* removing git-bzr, wouldn't it?

You're saying I should have done a lot of packaging work and waited for
the result to go through the NEW queue, and blocked all updates to git
in the meantime? I have to say I disagree, and I don't think that is
a more friendly approach.

Keep in mind that by request of the git-remote-bzr maintainer,
git-remote-bzr was removed from contrib/ in the upstream git package.
The code is not there in v2.0.0-rc4. What should the git-bzr package
contain now?

I continue to believe stable and testing have a purpose different from
unstable. If you're saying that you'd like to block this version of
git from graduating to testing until someone steps up to package
git-remote-bzr, I won't stop you from filing an RC bug to block it.

[...]
If anybody wants to maintain it, that person will certainly not be me.

Okay. Alas, there's no easy answer for software that people use but
no one wants to maintain.

Hope that helps,
Jonathan

If no one else does it, I'll probably eventually do it. But yeah,

Would you be interested in this approach? Do you have initial cgit

I'd like to propse another solution for this: let git build a git-source
binary package, and build cgit using that package.

I would prefer not to go this way. It would mean that when I make git
uploads, they'd always have a chance of breaking the cgit build
without notice. And it would also mean that whenever I fix an
important bug I have to track down whether cgit needs to be rebuilt.

An alternative that is not as bad is to export libgit.a (or .so, for
that matter) and headers for cgit use.

I'd far prefer to just have a copy of cgit built as part of the git
build. It doesn't have to involve multiple upstream tarballs: e.g.,
cgit can be included in the debian/ directory in the debian.tar.xz in
the short term, and in the long term I think it would be a candidate
for inclusion in contrib/ upstream.

Hope that helps,

 Not really.

Ok, cc-ing the bug.

The policy of the git authors is their prerogative. They've made it very
clear that they will not support a shared library. I suppose if you could
manage the SO as part of the debian packages. Doing so puts the burden on
us to track API changes with no promised from upstream.

Is this what you are proposing?

You're presumably thinking of http://bugs.debian.org/407722.

No, I agree with Gerrit and think that shipping libgit.a as a library
is a non-starter. Git's internal APIs (that's what libgit.a is) are
very unstable, and to provide it as a package, even with a constantly
changing name, would be to make an interface promise we couldn't keep.

Instead, I was offering to build cgit from the *same* source package
as git. I would probably try to upstream the change (putting a
submodule with cgit under contrib/), but even if upstream does not
accept it, we could build cgit in Debian this way.

The main (and only) advantage of this approach is that when an API
break causes cgit to stop working, git would FTBFS. This immediate
feedback would force the code to keep working together.

Hoping that clarifies,
Jonathan

I'm doing a few seconds of triage of wnpp bugs.

If I understand correctly, the grub team, like most maintenance teams
of core packages, is looking for helpers and co-maintainers. I don't
see grub listed at http://wiki.debian.org/Teams so it seems possible
that potential helpers exist who do not know how to get their feet wet
without establishing contact first and potentially (in their eyes)
having to commit to helping out before knowing what it is like.

What do you recommend for such hypothetical people? Could you suggest
a few words of wisdom here, for someone to digest and add to the wiki
as time allows?

For example:

 - what mailing lists should interested people subscribe to?

 - are there existing documents on how to test new versions of grub in
qemu to test changes or triage bugs? Is there an upstream page
with documentation of the boot protocol and other helpful technical
   background?

 - any confusing policies or other pitfalls for new contributors?

 - what kind of help is needed at the moment --- tracking upstream
development, testing, forwarding bugs, finding the commit that
fixes bugs known to have been fixed, backporting changes to stable,
hacking on maintainer scripts, packaging snapshots for
experimental, reviewing proposed changes, coordinating uploads,
finding good downstream fixes to apply, or something else?

Once the information for potential helpers to get started is easy to
find, I think this bug can be closed.

Thanks and hope that helps,
Jonathan

I like this message, though. Maybe it could go in README.Debian for a
larger audience. :)

Ciao,

Bug#472709: RFH: sql-ledger

2012-07-07 Thread Jonathan Nieder
Hi,

Raphael Hertzog wrote:

I do need such a web-application. Until smbledger is ready I'll continue
 to maintain sql-ledger in a low-maintenance mode.

Thus I transform this bug into a RFH (Request for help) so that if anyone
want to take over the responsibility of this package, he can.

I'm doing a few minutes of wnpp triage.

The above sounded more like an RFA (request for new maintainer) than
an RFH, but based on the PTS info and changelog it looks like you
already have an active co-maintainer. :)

Do you have advice for users of sql-ledger who could be able to help
out? I can imagine this bug being resolved by adding a new page under
http://wiki.debian.org/Teams or by adding notes to README.Debian
explaining the current maintenance policy and how to contribute
usefully.

Thanks for your work and hope that helps,
Jonathan

Thanks for your work at making sure Debian has good hardware support.

Bug#511243: RFH: boinc

2012-07-07 Thread Jonathan Nieder
Hi,

In January, 2009, Rene Mayorga wrote:

Ok, I still thinking that this bug should be a RFH, so I'm doing now :)

I was sifting through wnpp reports and noticed this one.

I think making this an RFH was an excellent idea, and you seem to have
recruited a reasonably sized, active team.

Of course it would be nice to recruit even more people, but it seems
that momentum via this bug report has stopped. And on the other hand
the BOINC team has a quite visible presence that makes at least some
ways to help clear:

  http://wiki.debian.org/Teams/DebianBOINCMaintainers
  http://git.debian.org/?p=pkg-boinc/boinc.git;a=blob_plain;f=debian/TODO.Debian

(Side note: if that TODO file were renamed to debian/TODO, then
dh_installdocs would install it as TODO.Debian to the boinc package.)

Is this RFH still useful?

Hope that helps,
Jonathan

Bug#519175: RFH: proftpd-dfsg -- versatile, virtual-hosting FTP daemon

2012-07-07 Thread Jonathan Nieder
Hi,

I was sifting through wnpp bugs and saw this one.

Francesco P. Lovergine wrote:

Indeed. Since it is not documented at http://wiki.debian.org/Teams,
maybe it is not easily discoverable.

Would you mind if I add a subpage there? It would contain information
answering basic questions about how to work with the team that are not
likely to change often (to avoid growing stale). Template taken from
http://wiki.debian.org/TeamTemplate. Something like

 Infrastructure
 --
 Packages:
http://qa.debian.org/developer.php?login=pkg-proftpd-maintain...@lists.alioth.debian.org
 Alioth project: https://alioth.debian.org/projects/pkg-proftpd/

 Interacting with the team
 -
 Email contact: pkg-proftpd-maintain...@lists.alioth.debian.org

 Usual roles
 ---
Anyone on the team can commit good changes to the repositories
and ask on the list for review and upload.

 Task description

Proftpd has more than 20 different non-core modules available and
some of them are important to users.
 See http://castaglia.org/proftpd/#Modules for a list.

The pkg-proftpd team aims to package all important modules and to
keep proftpd-dfsg and its modules maintained well in Debian.

 Get involved

All packages under the pkg-proftpd umbrella have Vcs-Git and
Vcs-Browser fields declaring the git repositories where they are
 developed.

New add-on module packages can be added easily. Just ask on Alioth to
 join the pkg-proftpd group.

Then the information about how to help would be easy to find and this
report would not be needed any more.

Sensible?

Bug#583826: RFH: chromium-browser -- Chromium browser

Hi Raymond,

In March, Raymond Yip wrote:

Yes, we can definitely use help! I'd suggest subscribing to the
chromium package through the PTS[1] if you haven't already. Then some
tasks that might be useful would be:

 - convincing the build system to stop using -Werror (bug#671994)

 - checking if non Debian-specific bugs are already reported upstream
   and forwarding them if not

 - using more system copies of libraries instead of embedded code
   copies

 - forwarding patches to optionally use system copies of libraries
   upstream (http://crbug.com/28287 tracks this).

 - simplifying and documenting debian/rules

 - understanding how debian/copyright is generated and convincing it to:
   - use correct DEP-5 syntax (see copyright-format.html from the
 debian-policy package)
   - combine stanzas that have no difference aside from copyright
 dates

 - plenty of other things :)

Sorry for the slow reply. If there is anything I or anyone else can
do to help, just ask.

Thanks,
Jonathan

Parallel XZ is a compression utility that takes advantage of running
LZMA compression of different parts of an input file on multiple cores

resources to speed up compression time with minimal possible influence
 on compression ratio.

Do you know if anyone has contacted the XZ Utils list[1] to see if
this can be integrated, or at least included in the extra/ directory?

Well, one has to start somewhere. :) If documenting every option is

Hi again,

No, unsquashfs takes care of that.

  3. More generally, what do people use squashfs-lzma for, and what
guarantees do they need in order to do it?

LiveCDs. Now that squashfs 4 is in mainline, the format is probably
going to remain supported for a while. Old formats were subject to
change from time to time but unsquashfs can be used to read the older
ones (all the way back to 1.x).

I am hoping some squashfs-lzma user can explain how and perhaps take
on the task of assuring it is well supported for squeeze.

So this is taken care of. It looks like what's left is to remove the
lzma-source package and perhaps lzma-dev (it has one declared
reverse-build-dependency --- chromium --- which I don't think actually
uses the headers). That way the rest of the package can be less scary
to modify. How about something like the following to start?

Bug#590440: git-sh package in Debian

Hi Alex,

Alex Morega wrote:

What would you suggest as a next step?

I think maybe a quick demonstration of what the package does might
help DDs to start using it (and hence to need the package). As far as
I can tell, the package:

 - uses bash as its interface, so would not be as useful for zsh
addicts but should be useful for bash users :)
 - sets up some aliases so you can use checkout or even c to
   mean git checkout
 - sets up a nice prompt and applies git's tab completion rules to
   those aliases

Do I understand correctly? It might also be nice to clarify the
package description to explain this sort of thing.

I'm cc-ing the ITP bug so others wanting to help out can see this,
too. (Hopefully that's okay.)

Thanks and good luck,
Jonathan

 test -d hello || hg clone http://hg.serpentine.com/tutorial/hello

Yagh. Here's a start to packaging that works around that.

I'm not sure where /tmp/REV7.my-new-hello and friends are supposed
to come from.

Caveats:

 - Build-depends-indep line is nonsense;
 - no installation rules yet;
 - clean rule is not thorough;
 - resulting documentation should be changed to use relative
   paths instead of invalid absolute ones;
 - some of the examples have been made silly due to the workaround
   for lack of network access;
 - no translations yet.

Still, maybe this can save someone some time?

Quoting from the upstream site This software generates a shared library
which can be loaded by LD_PRELOAD or linked at compilation time, so yes, it
is also meant to be linked without LD_PRELOAD.

Ah, ok. In this case, I would suggest:

 - library in package named libfailmalloc0 and installed to
   /usr/lib/libfailmalloc.so.0.0.0

 - failmalloc program and bare /usr/lib/libfailmalloc.so symlink in a
   package named failmalloc.

Since you are selling it as a tool rather than a preload library
(reasonable enough), have you considered providing a

  /usr/bin/failmalloc

script to do the LD_PRELOAD automatically? See fakeroot for
 inspiration.

This is a great idea, I didn't thought about this. Should I rename the
package, or just put that script in the libfailmalloc0?

Thanks, glad you like it. :)

That script cannot be included in the libfailmalloc0 package, since to
do so would prevent libfailmalloc0 and a future libfailmalloc1 from
being installed at the same time. See [1] for more on this.

Thank you very much for the review and the great idea.

No problem. Thanks for packaging failmalloc --- it looks like a lot
of fun (and useful, of course) so I look forward to being able to
install it from the Debian archive.

This package provides the development files for the failmalloc library.

Does failmalloc have a public API? Is it meant to be linked into
programs without using the LD_PRELOAD mechanism?

If not, what good is a development library for it?

 Package: libfailmalloc0
Description: Memory allocation failure crash-test tool

I would suggest installing it to

/usr/lib/libfailmalloc/libfailmalloc.so

. That way, there is no temptation to link programs to it explicitly.
Unversioned since there is no reason to install multiple versions at
once.

Since you are selling it as a tool rather than a preload library
(reasonable enough), have you considered providing a

/usr/bin/failmalloc

script to do the LD_PRELOAD automatically? See fakeroot for

 #!/usr/bin/make -f
 # -*- makefile -*-
 # Sample debian/rules that uses debhelper.

It's not a sample any more, is it? I'd suggest removing the
authorship notice.

 #!/usr/bin/make -f

 %:
dh $@

is too simple to require the notice for moral reasons, I'd think. As
legal reasons go, without restriction includes the ability to remove
the blurb. Or you can copy from
/usr/share/doc/debhelper/examples/rules.tiny by the same author which
does not include that notice.

Hope that helps,
Jonathan

Bug#603842: RFS: triggerhappy

2010-11-23 Thread Jonathan Nieder
Stefan Tomanek wrote:
 Dies schrieb Jonathan Nieder (jrnie...@gmail.com):

How does this compare to Rick van Rein's funkey[1]?

Hm, funkey does require a kernel patch und looks quite dated?

Funky Daemon which demonstrates how to parse the /dev/funkey character
 device.

Thanks for a quick response. Sorry, I did not read the following
carefully enough:

This patch is not being actively maintained, unlike my
BadRAM patch. There is an alternative[1] that is said to
work without kernel patching on current Linux systems.
We keep this page around for historic service,
especially because the information about keyboard
modes is still useful.

[1] http://www.burghardt.pl/wiki/software/esekeyd

How does triggerhappy compare to Krzysztof Burghardt's esekeyd?

As I said, triggerhappy uses the /dev/input/eventX files, anything that fires
SW_, KEY_ or BTN_ events can be used t launch programs.

That sounds like very useful information for the package description.
Currently it says:

| Description: global, user and session independent hotkey daemon
| Triggerhappy observes all connected input devices and launches
| configured commands when certain keys are pressed. The daemon
| works as a system wide service and is independent of any user
| session.

To nitpick (please don't take this the wrong way --- when a person
spends time on things like this, that usually means she thinks your
package is valuable):

It is easy to misunderstand the short description. I think it is
meant to say that that the hotkey daemon is not tied to a user
session, but now it conjures up images of user-independent hotkeys.
Maybe:

 Description: hotkey daemon for Linux
Triggerhappy watches connected input devices for certain key presses
(like Suspend and Volume Control) and runs administrator-configured
commands when they are pressed. Unlike suchandsuch, it runs as a
persistent, systemwide service and therefore can be used even
outside the context of a user or X11 session.
  .
It can also handle remote controls, as they are presented as
keyboards. No kernel patch is required. The daemon is a userspace
program that polls the /dev/input/event? interfaces for incoming key
  presses.
  .
For example, this package might be useful on a headless system to
use input events generated by a remote control to control an
  mpd server.

2010-11-23 Thread Jonathan Nieder
Hi Krzysztof and Stefan,

Switch and button events. I am also unsure whether esekeyd support the
hotplugging of input devices (done in triggerhappy by a udev script) or daemon
control via socket. From what I see, esekeyd also lacks the support for
 modes,
which can modify the button assignment depending on the state the daemon is
 in.

Thanks, that helps. Next comes a question that might sound off-topic.
Would it be easy and would it be sensible to teach esekeyd these
features?

To be clear, I am not a DD, so please do not feel obligated to answer
me as a hoop before getting triggerhappy uploaded. It won't help. :)

What I am trying to figure out is whether esekeyd and triggerhappy
occupy different niches or if it is an accident of history that you
are not already working on the same codebase. IIUC triggerhappy is
very young so there might be a chance to merge or make the user
interfaces compatible before users grow irrationally attached to the
quirks of one or the other.

merging the two programs would be difficult. Although young, triggerhappy

aspects of esekeyd (multiple devices, command socket, multiple config files).

This information could be useful for both package descriptions.
(Maybe, for triggerhappy:

That is, this is similar to esekeyd but it also supports
such and such, allowing you to such and such.

and for esekeyd:

This package does not do such and such; for that, see
triggerhappy. In the simple situations it does handle,
esekeyd is {simpler to configure | compatible with the
old funkey daemon | more conservative in its use of
resources | providing a different interface that existing
users might be used to | whatever}.

) As you can see, there are some placeholders because I do not know
the packages; I am just saying it would be nice to provide the

Both sound very useful to me. Thanks to you both.

. did you know about dh_installexamples?

. it might be nice to strip the outdated Installation section from
the README at build time, like this:

   sed '/Installation/, /textproc/ d' README debian/README
   dh_installdocs debian/README

. is it important to say

This manual page was written for the Debian
distribution because the original program does not
have a manual page.

so early in the ramond.8 page? If it were me, I'd not mention it
at all; the COPYRIGHT section already says this was written for
  Debian.

The packaging is very clean. Thanks for a pleasant read.

Jonathan

My motivation for maintaining this package is: I've written this small
program to fill a need not covered by any existing program, so I think
having it in Debian and making it available to others is a good thing.

Currently, there is no practical way to configure global hotkeys that act
independent from a user and/or X11 session. Buttons like Suspend or Volume
Control should be handeled without requiring a user to log into their desktop
 environment

How does this compare to Rick van Rein's funkey[1]?

It might make sense to add your app to Andries Brouwer (cc'd)'s keyboard
and console HOWTO, though the latter is sadly a bit dated by now.

Since the library is not meant for use by other packages, perhaps it
would make sense to put it in /usr/lib/klatexformula/? That is the
usual convention for package-private libraries (so another package or
the sysadmin can install her own libklf* without conflicting with the
klatexformula installation).

Barring that, I think you would want to have three library packages:

 - libklatexformula3 - the runtime libraries
 - libklatexformula-dev - the development library
 - libklatexformuia-doc - the API documentation

which could be used to embed a klatexformula widget in other GUIs if I
understand correctly.

Oops, that’s not permissive at all. Unless there’s a license that

have to be omitted from the .orig.tar.gz.

Would you be interested in pursuing collaborative maintainance? Given

involved with debian who would be interested in pitching it.

Looking forward to your thoughts,

Bug#574371: ITP: go -- The compiler for Google's Go programming language.

2010-07-04 Thread Jonathan Nieder
Hi again,

I went ahead and pushed my latest changes to hg.debian.org. Now
you can install google-go and godoc -http=:6060 will work as
expected. For my needs, that’s good enough for it to be usable,
though I expect there will be plenty of other problems to fix
as I try it out more.

One more thought.

While working on the package, I had something like this
diff applied:

diff --git a/src/cmd/make.bash b/src/cmd/make.bash

To try out a change in the packaging, I would use:

 ; rm debian/*.stamp debian/*.debhelper.log
 ; rm -fr debian/google-go/
 ; fakeroot debian/rules binary DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=nocheck

and I would not have to wait a long time.

I think this change would be useful for anyone trying to build from
source in Debian, since “debian/rules clean” already takes care of the
‘clean’ step. So it would be nice to get upstream to
include some knob to tweak this.

Ciao,
Jonathan

Hi Abhishek,

A small nitpick: I would say “automatic snapshots with git” rather
than “automated version control with git” to be clearer. It might
also be useful to mention that it waits for a quiescent period
and uses context such as the current song being played to produce a
more meaningful history.

Bug#535429: xburst-tools for Debian

2010-04-04 Thread Jonathan Nieder
Hi,

I would like to see xburst-tools available on Debian mirrors.
The packaging is not ready for that yet since it has an undeclared
build-time dependency on a mipsel toolchain, making it impossible
to automatically build.

Worse, there is no mipsel toolchain packaged for Debian except
the native one on mips machines. Sigh.

Here is a workaround. The idea is to include a compiled copy of
the firmware in the Debian source package (but not the upstream
source or repository). Since it is built with free software,
I think this would still meet Debian’s guidelines, and most
importantly, it would work. :)

Meanwhile I will look into packaging cross-compilers for Debian,
but that might take longer.

What do you think?

Plus there is some simple dh_make-generated packaging in the debian/
 directory upstream, nice to see.

Requires a mipsel-targetted assembler; more precisely, it expects
to be able to use mipsel-openwrt-linux-gcc and friends.

Options:

 1. Package a mipsel cross-compiler. All I can say is it would be
great (and unusual) if this happens. The easiest way might be
as a patch for the gcc-4.5 source package, though that method
doesn’t scale well to multiple cross-compiler targets (it is no
good if each gcc version takes forever to build).

 2. Split into two packages: one for the usbboot binary and one
for the firmware. The usbboot binary would be Architecture: any
and built the same way it is already. The firmware would be
Architecture: all and built on mipsel only, using the host
compiler. Downside: this makes it difficult to contribute,
since one needs access to a powerful enough mipsel machine.

 3. Include a compiled copy of the firmware in the Debian source
package. Since it is built with free software, I think this
would still be okay for a Debian package, though it’s not ideal.

Thoughts?

Bug#553707: RFH: lzma -- future of Debian squashfs-lzma

2009-11-01 Thread Jonathan Nieder
Package: wnpp
X-Debbugs-CC: debian-ment...@lists.debian.org

Hi,

I was thinking about how to bring the lzma package more up to date,
but I’m scared to do anything for fear of breaking squashfs-lzma. :)
So I thought I’d write for advice.

squashfs is a read-only compressed filesystem. Currently a kernel
module for reading LZMA-compressed squashfs 3.x is packaged for Debian
through the lzma source package. I think the userspace support is in
squashfs-tools, though I’m not sure since I’ve never tried it.

Good news: squashfs maintainer Phillip Lougher is pushing for
LZMA support in squashfs 4.0 in the mainline kernel v2.6.33 or so. [1]
Packaging this for Debian would perhaps mean backporting the change
for the linux-2.6 package and making sure the squashfs-tools package
has the appropriate support.

 1. How to support current users until an updated kernel enters sid?
Should the lzma package have to continue to produce an lzma-source
package?

I am not excited about making sure this still works with each LZMA
SDK upgrade. squashfs-lzma upstream used to just pick one version
to support (now the version in the mainline kernel is used), and
I’m afraid having to rebase the patch for each release would slow
things down a lot.

 2. Once squashfs 4 + lzma is available, is there a need to continue
to support squashfs 3 + lzma?

I am hoping not, because it is not clear the current kernel
patches apply to recent kernels. But if there is, we can probably
find some way.

 3. More generally, what do people use squashfs-lzma for, and what
guarantees do they need in order to do it?

I am hoping some squashfs-lzma user can explain how and perhaps take
on the task of assuring it is well supported for squeeze. But there
is plenty to do short of that, and I would be glad to help your
efforts in any way I can.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Jonathan
