While investigating this - knowing nothing about docbook myself -, I discovered that docbook.org recommends using pandoc instead of the openjade/xmlto/... zoo. Maybe other maintainers might find this useful. I'm not aware of this recommendation and I couldn't find it. The most straightforward change would be to change to docbook-xsl. But that would be an upstream decision.
Bug#948230: RFA: source-highlight -- convert source code to syntax highlighted document
Package: wnpp Severity: normal I'm looking for a new maintainer. There is a new upstream release to be packaged and some technical packaging cleanup work to be done. Everything works well, it's a useful package, it just needs a bit of attention.
Bug#948229: RFA: cmark -- CommonMark parsing and rendering program
Package: wnpp Severity: normal I'm looking for a new maintainer. The first job would be to update to the new upstream release. The shared library does not have a track record of compatibility, so updating it might require some care. Perhaps there is a way to collaborate better with the cmark-gfm package.
Bug#947175: O: sgml-spell-checker -- spell checker for SGML documents
Package: wnpp Severity: normal I am the upstream maintainer of this package, but I don't really maintain it any longer. It's really more of a private tool at this point. If no one is interested in this package, I will ask for its removal.
Bug#946757: O: lzop -- fast compression program
Package: wnpp Severity: normal Most sensibly maintained together with its underlying library lzo2 (see #946756), but the two source packages are released separately upstream.
Bug#946756: O: lzo2 -- data compression library
Package: wnpp Severity: normal Looking for new maintainer. Requires some care, source has some assembly code, had some portability issues in the past. Upstream releases are rare but appear to still happen.
Bug#946410: O: libtap-formatter-junit-perl -- Perl module for converting TAP output to JUnit XML output
Package: wnpp Severity: normal This was once useful for use with Jenkins, before Jenkins had a plugin for TAP results. Nowadays, I think it's obsolete. Perhaps it should be removed.
Bug#945988: O: libintl-perl -- Uniforum message translations system compatible i18n library
Package: wnpp Severity: normal The package has a sizeable installation count and an active upstream. It needs an active maintainer to keep it up to date with upstream and in line with various policies. Perhaps the Debian Perl Group should take it.
Bug#945394: O: delimmatch -- Perl module to match delimited substrings
Package: wnpp Severity: normal This package is abandoned upstream. I don't think this package was ever in general use. It was only used in the process of doing upstream releases of the docbook-dsssl package (note: not a build dependency in Debian). If docbook-dsssl is removed (see #945145), so should this. That said, there is nothing wrong with it, but I imagine in the Perl world there are countless other modules that have the same functionality.
Bug#945146: O: docbook-dsssl-doc -- documentation for the DocBook DSSSL stylesheets
Package: wnpp Severity: normal This package belongs together with docbook-dsssl, about which see #945145.
Bug#945145: O: docbook-dsssl -- modular DocBook DSSSL stylesheets, for print and HTML
Package: wnpp Severity: normal This package is abandoned upstream. I'm not sure if anyone or anything is still using this. There are close relationships with other similarly obsolescent packages such as docbook (the SGML variant) and openjade and some reverse dependencies with what are essentially wrapper scripts. It might be worth making a concerted effort removing all of these from Debian. Otherwise this package can stay on life support without doing much harm.

Bug#897138: O: anacron -- cron-like program that doesn't go by time
Package: wnpp Severity: normal I intend to orphan the anacron package. The package description is: Anacron (like "anac(h)ronistic") is a periodic command scheduler. It executes commands at intervals specified in days. Unlike cron, it does not assume that the system is running continuously. It can therefore be used to control the execution of daily, weekly, and monthly jobs (or anything with a period of n days), on systems that don't run 24 hours a day. When installed and configured properly, Anacron will make sure that the commands are run at the specified intervals as closely as machine uptime permits. . This package is pre-configured to execute the daily jobs of the Debian system. You should install this program if your system isn't powered on 24 hours a day to make sure the maintenance jobs of other Debian packages are executed each day. The package is no longer maintained upstream, and it doesn't interact well with systemd. It might need a complete rethink or replacement. (The co-maintainer has never been active, but they are welcome to take over the package like everyone else.)

Bug#471801: for would-be maintainers/adopters
Since I keep getting inquiries about taking this package over, with no one actually ending up doing anything, let me summarize what I have told people so far: * How can you help? -- Triage bugs, submit patches, respond to user inquiries, and so on. The usual stuff. I don't have a secret to-do list. Use the BTS. * The packaging is in the collab-maint subversion repository. If you have something to commit, please do so. If you are not sure, attach your patch to a bug or check with me first. * In recent times, the packaging has been very stable. The main work is integrating new upstream releases and the occasional CVE. Note that historically many upstream releases of egroupware have been buggy and have often been replaced by a fixup release a week later. :-/ So it is wise to exercise some patience before jumping on a new release. * Consequently, this is probably not a good package for some new contributor to adapt just to be able to play around with packaging. The *packaging* work consists mainly of downloading a new tarball, building a package, and uploading it. The *maintenance* work consists of triaging bugs and interacting with users and upstream maintainers. * So, if you want to maintain this package, start by going through the bug list, create patches, commit patches. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-wnpp-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Dude, do you understand what RFA means? It does not mean, hijack this package when you feel like it. Please undo this damage forthwith. Could you please try to lower the tone of the conversation? I sponsored the package of Alessandro, who told me that he wrote you an e-mail before the upload (which I think you didn't read, according to your message). Please consider the following points: - RFA means you can adopt the package with the approval of the previous maintainer. Which I never did do. I did read the messages of Alessandro but they needed more consideration. - The RFA called for adoption of the package in conjuction with egroupware, which AFAICT, neither of you considered. - There is currently a release freeze, which means that no new packages, least of all completely new upstream versions, should be uploaded. - I saw in the changelog Added php4 dependencies. What is the point of that? There is no PHP4 in Debian anymore. All of these points together indicate to me that this package takeover was not very wisely planned and executed. Do you want me to upload the old version of the package with a new epoch, put you back as a maintainer, retitle the bug from RFA to ITA, do again the upload with a new epoch? I ask that you upload the old version of the package with a new epoch, put me back as the maintainer, reopen the RFA bug, and refrain from interfering with the package until after the lenny release and further consultation with me. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Do you have any references (e.g. bug numbers). sysv-rc-conf seems to work fine for me. This refers to the graphical interface. Package: wnpp Severity: normal I'm looking for a new maintainer, perhaps comaintainer, or better yet several of them, for the egroupware package. It would need to be someone who is a moderately experienced user of egroupware. There are a number of bugs that appear to be upstream bugs that need to be triaged and forwarded. The packaging scripts have changed very little over the years, so you don't need to be a packaging guru. The packages egroupware-egw-pear and php-fpdf should be adopted together with egroupware. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#471806: O: knoda -- graphical database frontend for KDE
Package: wnpp Severity: normal I am orphaning the knoda package. Adopters should also take over the maintenance of the hk-classes package. Upstream development has apparently stopped, and the software isn't completely mature, but considering that similar software such as rekall and kexi is also having problems, maybe someone wants to continue using this. Package: wnpp Severity: normal We could use a few more people to help with the ntp package. We have a new mailing list and a subversion repository hosted under the pkg-ntp project on alioth. This package contains control programs which can access a remote NTP server. Thus you will need either ntp-simple or ntp-refclock; ntp-refclock includes drivers for radio clocks. . You should be able to remove the flex/bison parts of yoour clean:: too, really. Was there some reason you needed to rebuild them? The output of flex and bison was not included in the source tarball. This was obviously a mistake, and I have informed upstream about that. I'm not sure slony1-bin should Recommend postgresql-8.0-slony1 (a Suggests would be better, imv). In most cases (rather than in some cases), these will be installed on the same system, so it seems useful that they have a close dependency. Additionally, ntp-server should be a Recommends in postgresql-8.0-slony1, not slony1-bin. I'm not convinced of that. The handling of replication events is done in slon in package slony1-bin. Two notes on this for the record: The software is called Slony-I. There will likely be a follow-up project called Slony-II that can do multimaster replication. So it would be wise to call the Debian package slony1 or something similar that includes the number. I believe the yet to be released 1.1 series of Slony-I will support building without a PostgreSQL source tree. (At least some people have been in contact with me for advice regarding this.) This will likely also require PostgreSQL 8.0. So it's probably best to wait a little until this package can be built cleanly.

Where will free software end up if people create derived works and then threaten (more or less) to stop development or invent new measures against free distribution if someone redistributes it or otherwise makes use of the rights granted to them? Why shouldn't Debian users have convenient access to winex? Some Debian users probably contributed to the software that winex was originally based on, so it's only their right, as part of the whole free software deal, that they can access derived works as they see fit. If people cannot maintain a business except by trying to bend these rules, they should reevaluate their involvement in free software. Other people are perhaps trying to maintain a business that relies on the rules being followed by everyone.
