I don't mind--I only knocked together a package for a friend anyway; I
don't actually have a UMTS modem myself.

One enhancement that I was unable to get working is the ability to
launch pppd as root, but keep the rest of the program running as the
current user. The only reason the whole thing is run as root at the
moment is to satisfy pppd's (outdated?) requirement that, if pppd is not
run as root, the remote end of the connection must authenticate itself
to pppd. Anyway, expect a bug report about this once the package appears
in Debian. :)

Bug#485771: RFP: openvip -- video-processing tool

upload the packages I had been using to mentors so that you or someone

  Description : implements a highly effective data compression algorithm

BIG-KIT provides a portable library of compression and decompression
functions with a documented interface that you can include very easily
into your image or document processing software. In addition, JBIG-KIT
provides ready-to-use compression and decompression programs with a
simple command line interface (similar to the converters found in

JBIG-KIT implements the specification

International Standard ISO/IEC 11544:1993 and ITU-T Recommendation
T.82(1993): Information technology — Coded representation of picture
and audio information — Progressive bi-level image compression

which is commonly referred to as the “JBIG1 standard”. JBIG (Joint
Bi-level Image experts Group) is the committee that developed this
international standard for the lossless compression of images through
arithmetic coding. Like the well-known JPEG and MPEG compression
standards, JBIG has been developed and published through the
International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the
International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

WSGI middleware for "RESTful" mapping of URL paths to WSGI applications.

Selector also comes with components for environ based dispatch and

There is a very simple optional mini-language for path expressions.
Alternately we can easily use regular expressions directly or even
create our own mini-language.

Selector does not impose any architecture specific features (MVC, etc.)
upon the applications that it wraps; neither are there any framework
specific features. Best of all, selector is the simplest thing that will
work well.

The wireless-dev tree's p54 driver is the one I am going to package; I
should have made that clearer in the ITP.

The p54 driver certainly seems stable enough for regular use based on my
own testing of it.

I think that creating this package is worthwhile if it helps _anyone_ get
their wireless hardware working under Linux, and if it lets upstream get
_any_ useful feedback or bug reports.

PS, please CC me in your responses as I read debian-devel though Gmane
and may miss out on your messages. :)

Bug#432964: RFP: elfrc -- turn arbitrary files into ELF objects for linking into programs

  Description : turn arbitrary files into ELF objects for linking into

elfrc is a program which can turn arbitrary files into ELF object files which
can then be linked into your program directly and accessed via simple,
user-defined symbol names.

For instance, it's possible to embed even huge (16MB+) files directly into the
executable and then access the data in constant time without making the
compiler or linker eat loads of memory.

  Description : very fast JSON encoder/decoder for Python

JSON stands for JavaScript Object Notation and is a text based
lightweight data exchange format which is easy for humans to read/write
and for machines to parse/generate. JSON is completely language
independent and has multiple implementations in most of the programming
languages, making it ideal for data exchange and storage.

The module is written in C and it is up to 250 times faster when
compared to the other python JSON implementations which are written
directly in python. This speed gain varies with the complexity of the
data and the operation and is the the range of 10-200 times for encoding
operations and in the range of 100-250 times for decoding operations.

Bug#394138: ITP: vmware-package -- utility for building Vmware related Debian packages

2006-10-21 Thread Sam Morris
You might be interested in checking out some of the work I did on
packaging vmware. Debian diffs are available from
<http://robots.org.uk/debian/unofficial/vmware/>.

I tried to integrate as much with Debian as possible. Easy stuff
included desktop entries, doc-base registration, and using existing
packages where they already exist in Debian (e.g., point the user at
dhcp3-server instead of shipping VMware's modified version).

Harder stuff included network setup, and replacing the init script with
if-{pre-post}-{up,down}.d scripts, which allows the user to configure
their virtual networks by editing /etc/networking/interfaces.

The biggest problems I had were:

  * ifupdown fails to handle the failure of
if-{pre,post}-{up,down}.d scripts. Instead, the interface is
blindly set into the target state.
  * VMware seem to make a lot of modifications to the libraries they
use, and some of them are no longer binary compatible. Getting
vmware to work at all without segfaulting took a lot of trial
and error. In the end it works, but the user's GTK theme is not
applied to vmware's controls.

  Description : business accounting package

Quasar is a full function, stand-alone business accounting package.

The full description probably needs to be written by someone who is more
familiar with the package than me. :)

Main features:

 * client/server architecutre -- multiple clients (including those
   running on other platforms) can talk to a Quasar server over a
   network
 * supports multiple international currencies and other locale-related
   stuff
 * fast/easy data entry, quick error correction
 * backup/restore
 * recurring transactions
 * online help
 * supports multiple companies
 * drill down feature -- data can be viewed in multiple levels of
   detail, higher detail levels can be restricted based on a user's
   security access
 * prints mailing labels
 * workshift control -- each transaction is linked to a user and shift;
   shifts can be closed and reconciled and shift reports can be
   generated

Lots more features listed at the URL above

I would prefer not to adopt UCF at the present time. I am not a fan of
packages where 'dpkg -S /etc/something.cfg' does not reveal the package
that owns the file. I'd prefer for dpkg's conffile-handling be fixed
instead of farming out management of the file to a separate tool.

With that said, it will probably take many years for dpkg to be improved
in this way, so I may take another look at ucf in the future. :)

I hope to have this done for the next release.

Hm, I thought it was part of the systrace tarball but now I see it's a
separate download:
http://www.citi.umich.edu/u/provos/systrace/gtk-systrace-2003-06-23.tar.gz

It seems a bit out of date, and installs to /usr/X11R6 which is about to
disappear in unstable, but maybe someone will be able to nurse it back
to health.

I'll CC this to the bug report I filed for systrace.

  Version : 1.6c

  Description : Interactive Policy Generation for System Calls

Systrace enforces system call policies for applications by
constraining the application's access to the system. The
policy is can be generated interactively; operations not covered
by the policy raise an alarm and allow an user to refine the
currently configured policy, or deny the unauthorised operation.

 * Confines untrusted binary applications
 * Interactive policy generation with optional graphical interface
 * Non-interactive policy enforcement
 * System call argument rewriting
 * Remote monitoring and intrusion detection

Systrace has two backends; one of them requires a kernel patch. The
other backend uses the ptrace system call. It is slower and not as
feature-full as the kernel backend.

Easier to set up, requires no configuration, doesn't depend on portmap.
Possibly allows access to servers that require authentication (I

When picking the package name I consulted the draft Debian packaging

I chose sensors-applet because it matches upstream's name for the
package, and because there are more *-applet packages in the archive
than gnome-*-applet packages--but I can rename the package if you wish.

Privman is a library that makes it easy for programs to use privilege

applications that must run with some elevated permissions. Applications that
use the Privman library split into two halves, the half that performs valid
privileged operations, and the half that contains the application's logic. The
Privman library simplifies the otherwise complex task of separating the
application, protecting the system from compromise if an error in the
