Bug#176737: magicfilter

2004-07-05 Thread Greg Deitrick
Adam, David,

I think the decision on how to proceed is largely up to David.

I managed to get magicfilter 2 packaged for Sid. I am willing to continue my
efforts to take over as maintainer. David has been playing the role of
mentor, but I don't know if he wants to continue. As I understand the new
maintainer process I believe I need a mentor who eventually becomes my
advocate. If David thinks my progress has been adequate and he is willing to
be my mentor/advocate I'm ready to proceed with the application process.

But keep in mind that I am mostly interested in being helpful to the project.
If David thinks another arrangement might work out better for magicfilter,
I'm flexible. I have been slow in completing this work.

As far as the packaging goes I'd like to do some testing with some additional
printers, and also with some network printers (I tried this once and had a
problem but I didn't track it down). I'm not sure what David thinks needs to
be done next. Implementing Adam's suggestions would also be nice.

So, David, how would you like to proceed?

Greg Deitrick

P.S. Adam, my packages of magicfilter 2 for Sid (and an early version for
Woody) are at www.mylinuxisp.com/~gdeitrick.

Why not have both? Put both in the same source and just call the
old one magicfilter1. Magicfilter 2 can use a different directory
than magicfilter1 so that both can coexist at the same time.

Greg Deitrick has packaged magicfilter 2.0 with my some help of mine.
But he is not (yet) a Debian maintainer. Greg?

I use it with a Laserjet 4MP with lpr too.

OK.

First, Greg has just recently finished packaging and secondly, I
hesitated to install a new version of magicfilter with a new
configuration syntax.

Thanks,
  David

2004-07-04 Thread Adam Majer
Hi David,

I have noticed that magicfilter is up for adoption. I'm not sure if
someone is doing too much work on it yet, but if no, then I would like
to adopt it. I use magic filter with lpr (which I've been fixing up over
the last few weeks). I actually use it with the old HP DeskJet 500 (over
17 years old now!!).

I would like to add a better configuration utility that will parse
/etc/printcap and allow people to change/delete/add printer settings.

Are there any reasons why version 2.x has not made it into Debian yet?
