The requested URL /devel/extract was not found on this server.

BTW whatever that is it may be somewhat overlapping with the search

Is potato really called 2.2? Past releases, hamm, bo, rex and buzz are

this page too? The 'download here' link for the hamm release is also
incorrect, it needs to refer to the archive server and it's mirrors. I
don't think CD images for hamm are online anymore and I doubt anyone sells
them [??]

Re: new developer's corner

1999-09-15 Thread James A. Treacy
A few minor comments on the page.

The line:
   The information on this page, while public,...
appears twice. Removing the one from templates/debian/develpage.wml
leaves the one I think was intended. This leaves only two lines in
develpage.wml. Perhaps they should just be rolled into develbar.wml
(or better, the contents of develbar.wml added to develpage.wml).
Also, the hr on the next line should be removed.

Put
h1Developers' Corner/h1
just before the line mentioned in the previous paragraph.

We can remove the link to the Japanese version of the policy manual
as it can be (is?) linked from the Japanese version of the page.
Of course, the policy manual should be available in multiple langs
using content negotiation alongside the english version (I haven't
checked, maybe it is). The debian-doc group could use some help
along these lines.

The menubar has two lines that are wider than it when using Netscape
(probably depends on the font sizes chosen whether this happens).
One is 'Policy Manual-Japanese Version' which may be removed and
the other is 'Lintian-Policy Compliance Checking'. The second
is long without being clear. Suggestions for something shorter?

Remove the link to devel/release_info. All the information here
should be available under releases/.

There are two copies of 'Release Information' at the bottom of the
menubar, neither of which links to anything.

Hope this helps.

I think all of that should be in the release page... the first release info
link.

I can't find an APT that's not capped or a part 3

bad attept to comment...

 7) PAM link
 The PAM link is bad - I once found a working HTTP site that one could read

We'll see if BenC has a different link.. remind me in IRC if I forget..

Well, I have all the stuff, we just need to get a script that
re-generates the xearth file from the DB and another script to do a one
time import of the existing xearth file.

Given how long it's been since thatxearth file was made, and how little data

 I don't know if it's kosher for me to modify languages.wml instead of
 working around this way.

IMHO, the best idea would be to add it there, to have them all in one place.
It's not that unlikely that another page would like to use the info as well.

 point
 out that the vast majority of systems out there are x86 based(I don't like the
 i386 since I've prefered AMD CPUs over Intel since the 486 days). This being
 the case, I'd suggest going to a more even homepage, with the focus being
 all
 the different platforms. So on the homepage, we would simply have X86, MIPS,
 Alpha, M68K, etc... as the links, each of which would have it's own news page.
 This may seem like it would fragment out the different flavors of Debian, but
 it
 would at least make it appear that we are being impartial about which platform
 gets the most focus. I would also like to propose that we get away from
 having
 a single version number to cover each platform. The reason for this is that
 we
 can release for individual platforms at different times, and not hold up the
 release for one platform that may have problems. The version numbers will
 remain consistant for the features, but I will point out that glibc 2.1 was
 released into Sparc when slink was released, while it was not yet implemented
 in
 the other distributions. If we set a feature list for Potato, it should be
 consistant across the different platforms.

Your system would require a lot more manpower to keep the web pages
up to date. This would simply lead to the web pages for some ports being
chronically out of date. Besides, that manpower could be much better used
improving the distribution.

I also agree with a previous responder that the different architectures should
be treated equally. When setting up the pages for the different ports, I
considered using separate pages for each port and quickly abandoned the
approach for a number of reasons. People from the various ports agreed.

As far as package numbering is concerned, this is a much bigger issue and
would need to be discussed on debian-devel. Don't get your hopes up about
getting anywhere with that suggestion though. :) Only a small percentage
of packages need to be compiled specially for each architecture. Once a
port advances far enough, they can auto-compile most packages and do quite
a good job of 'keeping up' with the i386 port.

 The name in English (in all lowercase) is the hash key, and the value is its
 translated name. Be sure to add the name in English to all the languages (so
 that yet untranslated copies will get the name in English).

Just to be explicit about it, here is an example where I only knew the
French words for Croatian and French. The translators will take care
of everything else:
fr = {
finnish= finnish,
croatian   = croate,
english= english,
danish = danish,
french = franE7ais,
german = german,
italian= italian,
japanese   = japanese,
},

  Should I just go ahead anyway and add stuff to the %langs hash in
  languages.wml? What would that break? Nothing?

Go ahead and add them. There is no harm in adding languages that aren't
yet used in our section of the web site.

Additionally, if you need anything new implemented, discuss it with us.
It only makes sense for us to share these resources. No point in having
translators duplicate work.

   permute_as_matrix('install', 'english', 'croatian',  'czech',  ..)

Speaking of which, please take the Perl scripts out of the page and #include
them instead, so that I don't need to update the translation each time the
script changes (like when only the number of languages change). That would
simplify a great deal.

Of course, the text strings in the script need to be moved to slices then.

Ok, so I didn't notice that links to the logo page have already been
added to the menubar AND the logo itself. :)

That gives us three links to the logo page (including the one from

new devel corner page). How about removing the one from the menubar?

It uses mod_ssl in apache. Expect an SSL enabled ldap server in Q1 2000 or
