That was a bad example.
There is no such language team like de_PY (German in Paraguay).
'py' is a substitution for 'python' here; there is a German po file for
some python module at that page.

So I have removed de_PY, fr_PY, it_PY and zh_PY from the list.

As well as bin (which is a substitution for binary) and cli (as a short form
for Commandline Interface) and cut (there are no po files for 'cut' language
at that page; there are Danish, German and French po files at that page).

Hi all,

thanks for all the feedback. It seems that there's more work to do
than I've expected. Currently I will not work on fixing the po

So, if anyone else likes to work on this, feel free to do so.

Ideally these would be fixed upstream, but 2nd best option would be to
filter them, i.e. if it is invalid combination (as shown) then simply
simply present it unter "DE" (in your example).

This, howeve, would require a list of all valid combination. I don't
know if such a list exists.

What about the AA_BB and AA@somestring languages?

For e.g. I wonder why we have international/l10n/po/man_DE
which links only to this po file:
https://i18n.debian.org/material/po/unstable/main/i/i2p/installer/resources/locale-man/i2p_0.9.48-1.1_man_de.po.gz

This po file cleary says
"Language: de\n"
Why is the language then called man_DE and not just "de"? Is this a
bug in our scripts?

I think this is a bug, because those po files are named man_ because
they are translations of the manual pages, not because of the Mandingo
language.

"Similar" thing happens with
https://www.debian.org/international/l10n/po/bos_DE (and all other
bos_XX links in https://www.debian.org/international/l10n/po/): they are
translations files of the boswars package, having two translations
templates, one named     boswars_version_xx.po.gz and another one named
boswars_version_bos_xx.po.gz, so that "bos" is misdetected as Bosnian
language.

I don't know *where* is the bug, though: it can be in the i2p package
because of wrong structure or naming o files (sorry, I don't know the
related policy), in the l10n scripts* that gather the material
(https://salsa.debian.org/l10n-team/dl10n/) or in our code that process
that data in webwml repo. Hence I'm CC'ing debian-i18n and
debian-l10n-devel for the case anybody knows and it's easy to fix. If
not, a quick workaround could be to exclude the problematic packages
from our stats (exclude them from the dl10n scripts so no material is
generated).

Hi all,

the main reason I like to clean up our web pages it to get a good
ratio between useful and useless content. If we have to much content,
it's harder to find the important content in all the web pages.

A minor reason is the build time of our web pages. I've already removed
parts of our web pages which were not needed and we could save a good
amount of build time.

I like remove the useless translations, but I still try to find out
how to match the proper combinations which does not seem easy to me.

I also had similar thoughts in the past.

What do people think about us, when they see such a massive language
list, with absolutely stupid looking (and some wrong) entries?

"Debian is completely crazy" ?
"They are unable to or have no interest in maintaining their system well" ?

The problem would be: which do we want to display and which
not. You would need some clever logic (if this possible) or need
to maintain a list by hand. Which would be an unthankful job,
and it costs time.

That's an issue indeed ...

Yes, but why should other users be deprived of reading it as well,
even if they might not be able to contribute?

To be clear: For me the content matters, as I'm well capable of
reading it in english.

If there are ressource constraints on the web server then this should
be clearly said so. Otherwise I do not see a reason why the existing
translations (where translation teams decided to do the work) should
be removed.

 I guess you are correct.

There might be some value to get the translation stats for a specific
language in that language. Take Swedish as an example:
https://www.debian.org/international/l10n/po/sv.sv.html might be useful,
but https://www.debian.org/international/l10n/po/sv.de.html is completely
useless.

I guess all the cross combinations of translated stat pages come for "free"
as part of the translation of the web pages in general, but I agree that it
is a waste of resources.

"Users, who do not speak English (very well)" ???

This is a page specific for translators, and the workflow in Debian is
"translate from English to ".

So, we should expect that every person viewing this page is capable of
reading/speaking English!

Therefore, I propose to remove all translations of these pages! It is enough,
if they are only existing in English.

That would reduce the amount of pages from 9400 to 580 without losing anything.

Users who do not speak english (very well). In your example this is a
combination, so a (probably wrong or very rare) language combination
(as a German I was not aware of it at all) and translator (probably
using templates) who decided this string is sensible for users
speaking Netherlands.

Most likely.

Who decided what is "main"? And why should we skip "minor" languages?
If there are translators willing to do the work, we should welcome
them. I remember that there was a big translation effort into Buthan
(I hope my memory serves me right, Bubulle coordinate it). And I even
heard that some countries prefere free software exactyl for this: They
are not forced to use a "main" language but can get the best results
in their native one.

And to do this, these statistics are *very* helpful, as they show the
current status and help focus on the work.

And maybe some German speaking community in Paraguay just happens to
decide right now to do the work - then they could ramp up their
efforts quickly, as the infrastructure is already there.

Yes, and this is again very helpful. For German, I look at it again

I believe that these stats use a list of languages created by the script
gen-files.pl:

https://salsa.debian.org/webmaster-team/webwml/-/blob/master/english/international/l10n/scripts/gen-files.pl

and the list of languages is done by gathering all the languages present
in .po files in testing or unstable archive, using the material in:

https://i18n.debian.org/material/

I'll just pick one:
de_PY.nl.html is
"Toestand van de PO-bestanden voor de taalcode: de_PY — German @tmpl_lang@ndash;

I guess that the different scripts just combine all the different
language pairs, but frankly I don't know.

First, why is the list of languages on page
https://www.debian.org/international/l10n/po/
so long? Shouldn't we just list the main lagnuages, without it's variants?
Should we ignore all "Unknown language"?

This is a bug processing languages with ISO in ISO 639-2 set:

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1025749

Let's look at these three:
https://www.debian.org/international/l10n/po/log
https://www.debian.org/international/l10n/po/log_DE
https://www.debian.org/international/l10n/po/man_DE

They list some packages for which
"translation is underway" or "already translated".
Fine.

But why do we then add a long list of package names under the section
"Packages already i18n-ed"
"These packages are translated in other languages, and then could be translated into
your own language."

This is the list of "pending translations", in fact.

And at the end of the web page we list again all languages, same list
as on the top of the page.

The list of languages is repeated at top and end of the page since
almost the first revision of the corresponding template, I guess it was
done by convenience.

I've just updated /english/international/l10n/po/tmpl.src removing the
line that inserts the list again at the end of the pages.

I like to know which information is really needed for the translators
then I'll try to fix the Makefile to get rid of the unneeded files.

I'm CC'ing debian-i18n list, but many translators are not subscribed
there, just only subscribed to their -l10n-language lists, and I guess
that this info is mostly used by the translators translating package
information (not website pages), so I'm not sure how to reach them.

For my case (Spanish), I'll send a mail to -l10n-spanish linking to this
message and your message, for the case they can provide some feedback.

Kind regards,

Hi!

This is the PO statistics for Debian packages, not website translations. To
fix the list, packages need to be fixed - translations for "spoken in"
merged with the language were natural. (Like "nb_NO" merged with "nb".)

The unknown languages are plain bugs, I think - for example bos_XX" caused
by wrong filenames in the language directory of the software - see
https://codeberg.org/boswars/boswars/src/branch/master/languages (The file
"bos-de.po" should be named just "de.po" for example.)

Sorry if all of this was clear for everyone.

2023-10-29 Thread Thomas Lange
Package: www.debian.org

Currently we generate several hundereds of files in international/l10n/po/
A lot of them are around 2.2M big.

We have an overall of 8700 files in this directory.
Do we really need statistic like these? For e.g.
/international/l10n/po/de@hebrew
/international/l10n/po/sa.de.html

We should review if we really need all these files in there.

The directory currently needs 2.2 GB disk space.

Bug#1035960: All of sudden, the Spanish PO debconf templates is getting full of alien translators :-)

2023-05-16 Thread Laura Arjona Reina
Hello

The spiderinit job took very long but finally it re-created all the status
files and the html pages, and I think it worked well.

I have added code to use lockfiles in the spiderbts job:

https://salsa.debian.org/l10n-team/dl10n/-/commit/5d518000bf15762dde13ed7cd56dee77a2bf757b

And reenabled the cron.hourly job

I'll try to keep an eye on things these days, please report if you notice any
issue.

Kind regards

Bug#1035960: All of sudden, the Spanish PO debconf templates is getting full of alien translators :-)

2023-05-12 Thread Laura Arjona Reina

Thanks everybody for the extra info and Cyril for the research

I have killed the spider jobs.
I have modified the crontab in tye.debian.org to disable cron.hourly job
(spiderbts) for now.

I have removed the status files [1] and launched a job spiderinit [2] to
re-create them.

[1] in /srv/i18n.debian.org/dl10n/data/spiderbts/data/status.??
[2] sudo -u debian-i18n /srv/i18n.debian.org/dl10n/git/cron/spiderinit &

Tomorrow I'll have a look at the logs of the spiderinit job [3] and
launch the cron.hourly job once.

[3] /srv/i18n.debian.org/log/spiderinit/spiderinit.20230512-2134.[err|log]

Then I'll see how long does it take and if there is any issue.
If everything went well the webpages should show correct data. Then I'll
set the "hourly" job to run 6 times a day and will keep an eye these days.

I agree that a lockfile is needed, I'll try to work on that too and when
it's set, and the issue is fixed, I'll update the cron to run hourly again.

Kind regards

Note that many de.po occurrences appear in the status file for other
languages, looks like processes heavily stomping onto others' feet?

It looks to me there should be some locking at the very least to avoid
that amount of concurrency. And that it would probably be best to start
afresh, killing all those processes, maybe disabling the cron jobs,
cleaning temporary and maybe corrupted data files, and triggering a
single run manually to see if it works.

But then, I have 0 knowledge about the spider, and I'll leave that up to
someone else: I don't want to risk making the matter worse!

Please pretend I don't know anything about i18/l10n, www, or how the
latter uses information published by the former…

It looks to me like at least the status.$LANG files exposed at [1] are
busted, with many references to different $LANG.po in some files.

 1. https://l10n.debian.org/coordination/00data/

For example, status.es has 5319 references to de.po…

Whether that's linked or not, I didn't find reassuring that the www
build output hundreds/thousands of warnings when running a local,
partial build of english/international…

I'll keeping looking at what's supposed to happen on tye, but I'm not
sure I'll be able to get to the bottom of it on my own.

Maybe this issue in the Spanish dashboards is related to the report #1035960
about issues in the German dashboards:

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1035960

I will try to investigate both issues but any help is welcome.

If any of you is sure about the last date when you saw things were working
well, please tell, so I can try to learn what happened since then that could
cause the issue.

New string in footer in www.debian.org pages, please update templates.??.po

2019-02-22 Thread Laura Arjona Reina

Dear Debian I18N people,

We have made a change in the Debian website, to better reflect when each page
has been updated (see
https://salsa.debian.org/webmaster-team/webwml/merge_requests/21 for details).

As a result, there is a new string used in the footer of every page, which is
"Last Built".

(Currently the pages say "Last Modified: -MM-DD HH:SS" and from now on they
will say "Last Built: -MM-DD HH:SS").

Please let us know how this new string is written in your language, there are
many ways to do this:

* Answer to the list(s) or by IRC (in #debian-www), and I (or other web team
member) will add the new string.
* Send an updated templates.??.po (?? being your language code) to the list or
as merge request to salsa (the original file you can find it in the
https://salsa.debian.org/webmaster-team/webwml/ repo, in the "po" subfolder of
your language folder).

* Commit yourselves your changes in the webwml repo

I have already updated Danish, French, German, Spanish and Swedish with
suggestions from translators or native speakers present in our IRC channel.

I have taken the opportunity to update all the language templates (the .po
files) for every language present in the Debian website, so maybe you will find
other new strings to update/translate in the /po/ subfolder of your language in
the webwml repo.

Thanks in advance!

Kind regards,

Dear Maintainer,

In www.d.o/doc/books, even if I have updated the doc.sv.po and
translated all posts, the Korean book does show in English on the
Swedish translation. I have noticed that the same case is valid for the
Spanish translation too. (Po fully updated, but book description still
shows in English).

This is in reference to the Korean book by TaeHee Lee (Annihilator) and
Dong-jin Oh (Firstbood) - Sorry for not giving the title, the title
doesn't show correctly for me.
