The system has been running under etch since its birth a bit longer than a year ago. Use patterns or load have not changed significantly since then. Xorg.0.log from the latest crash attached. There haven't been any related software upgrades in etch recently, as far as I'm aware. You're running a recent kernel though, so maybe that's related. I forgot to say in teh reportbug that the problem is present also using vesa driver, with an inportant difference: while usoingo openchrome driver the problem is in the cursor only , using vesa it works (without mouse) only if we put the memory size (on etch it figured it automaticllay) plain vga driver is ok, but of course unusable. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-x-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: Bug#527920: please break circular dependency
* David Nusinow da...@gravitypulls.net [090509 19:39]: Because these two packages do actually depend on each other to function. That's a hard dependency and there's no way around it. Ian Jackson has argued strenuously that circular dependencies are not a bad thing, and that dpkg handles them fine, and I'm in agreement with him. While dpkg is fine, I'm not sure apt is in this very case. (There is something strange and often xserver-xorg-video-* packages are pulled in in strange ways, which might be because of this circular dependency). That said, the reason why xserver-xorg was split from xserver-xorg-core was to separate the very large and rapidly changing server config scripts from the server itself, allowing us to make rapid improvements to them with minimal stress to ourselves and our users. Now that those scripts are essentially gone, it's time to start thinking earnestly about reuniting them as xserver-xorg, and letting -core go away. This is *not* the same thing as removing the circular dependency, which is necessary and correct so long as these two packages exist despite whatever buggy tools. While I agree that circual dependencies are nothing inherently buggy and to avoided at all costs, they are still something not done lightly. Apart from broken tools that may have problems with them, it is simply confusing for users, so a solution without is almost always better than one with circular dependencies. At least the description of xserver-xorg should be changed. It still says: | This package depends on the full suite of the server and drivers | for the X.Org X server, as well as providing a configuration | infrastructure to manage xorg.conf. It does not provide the actual | server itself, but removing it is strongly discouraged. This description screams with every single word you are able to remove this package but you do not want to unless in strange situations. Which is simply not true unless the dependency from xserver-xorg-core to xserver-xorg is not a bug. (And of course increases the confusion of our users (and of the developers, reading this description I also first thought the dependency from xserver-xorg-core to xserver-xorg was some bug introduced by someone trying to fix some bug without thinking)). Bug#521834: Also happening on HP Compaq 6715b with fglrx driver
I can confirm this (or a very similar) bug is also happening on a HP Compaq 6715b with the fglrx driver (it never happened before, while still using the default Lenny radeon driver). After a suspend to RAM or a hibernate, resuming works OK, but then the machine freezes upon logging out (when the GDM login screen is displayed). And fdi is not quite a nice config file format. Or we could point at gpointing-device-settings, since that has been accepted in the archive now. How about showing the synclient command line and pointing at the existing documentation for how to configure hal/xorg.conf? Something along the lines of: * Tapping has been disabled by default on many touchpads by upstream. If you want to re-enable it, you can do so from within the X environment by running the following commands in a terminal: $ synclient TapButton1=1 $ synclient TapButton2=2 $ synclient TapButton3=3 Note that the configuration will not be permanently modified, to do so please read the documentation about how to set up your xorg.conf file in the synaptics(4) manpage or in /usr/share/doc/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics. Another alternative is to use desktop environment specific tools like gpointing-device-settings or touchfreeze. Thoughts? I'd even go one step further and start Suggest-ing those 2 packages in this upload. PS: I just took a minute to re-read the docs provided in the package and actually I have to say that there is really no need to provide another fdi example, README.Debian points to /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/20thirdparty/11-x11-synaptics.fdi which already contains plenty of examples (might add the TapButton* options eventually). -- mattia :wq! -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-x-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel Version: 2:2.3.2-2+lenny6 Severity: normal With the Intel driver, WidthMMOfScreen() returns 1mm and HeightMMOfScreen() returns 257mm. So - are these patches available in lenny or squeeze versions of libxcb1 in Debian? the queue size is set at build time, not run time. in lenny, it's 4k; in squeeze, it's 16k (just as it was in plain Xlib in etch and before). in order to change the queue size in the lenny version, change the size of the queue array in struct _xcb_out. do you have a good test case for this bug that doesn't involve java code? how big is the performance difference between 1) etch xlib 2) lenny xlib 3) lenny xlib with 16k buffer 4) squeeze xlib all talking to the same server? Bug#487635: The perfomance degrading since lenny also affects to ltsp clients

Only downgrading to libx11-6 from etch allows some applications (as java apps) run in an usable way. Maybe this info can help: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libxcb/+bug/277069 and http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17868 say that the problems appeared since libx11-6 was linked with xcb. This problem is very important for Debian Edu users. Up to now, the only workaround is downgrading to the etch library. Does this get fixed by bumping libxcb's buffer size to 16k instead of 4? Cheers, Julien I didn't know that was possible. After reading http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xcb/2008-September/003906.html it seems that setting the env variable LIBXCB_QUEUE_BUFFER_SIZE makes it possible, but according to http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xcb/2008-September/003905.html the default value is already xcb_queue_buffer_size=16384. So - are these patches available in lenny or squeeze versions of libxcb1 in Debian? - if they are, it seems that 16384 doesn't improve it, as I've already tested lenny and squeeze versions of libxcb1. Can you suggest any other value to test? or maybe I'm wrong and there's another known way to do what you suggest. In that case, please, I need you to teach me how to do it to test this bug. Cheers José L.

I observe the same on my Thinkpad X40, and use the workaround of disabling DRI (thanks Joe!). This is the first version of the -intel driver I've tried; the -i810 driver worked fine. Bug#528261: xserver-xorg: new mouse configuration needs examples
Package: xserver-xorg Version: 1:7.4+1 Severity: wishlist I found out from NEWS.Debian about the changes to configuration of input devices in X. It all seems fine, except that it took me a while to figure out exactly how to port over my xorg.conf to HAL (file location, syntax, restarting hald). I think a template fdi file would go a long way towards helping users figure out where to put their options. For example, you could install the following as /etc/hal/fdi/policy/x11-mouse.fdi: ?xml version=1.0 encoding=ISO-8859-1? deviceinfo version=0.2 device match key=info.capabilities contains=input.mouse match key=/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer:system.kernel.name string=Linux !-- Add mouse options from xorg.conf here. Re: console-setup + X = broken console
David Nusinow wrote: Hi Adam, Adam Majer wrote: Hello, I've just installed the console-setup because X server depends on it. Now, my console is completely unusable. The text does not scroll it just runs off the screen. I'm writing to both maintainers because, 1. Why, why, why is console-setup a dependency of X? X does not function without console-setup? Is it possible to have X only Suggest or Recommend console-setup? Please see http://wiki.debian.org/XStrikeForce/InputHotplugGuide for the rationale and #515214 for more info. That is great, yet it does nothing for me except change fonts. I've read the bug report, and it is just people complaining about Hal and console-setup dependencies. Frankly, I see no reason why console-tools and hal cannot be moved to Recommends. I understand the reasoning behind the above link and agree with it. But at same time defaults can be hardcoded to something like, keymap - US (or Linux default) mouse - standard /dev/input/mice device Moving these packages to Recommends DOES NOT mean you need to support input definitions in xorg.conf! For testing purposes, I've removed console-tools inspite of the depends. My system didn't explode - it just retained standard Linux console fonts. The problem with cursor and scrolling was not corrected, which probably indicates the core issue is in the nvidia binary driver. That would be something that nVidia will have to address themselves. My recommendations would be: 1. fix console-setup to not change the font of the console by default. Default options should not change boot font, please. Maybe have debconf options as [Boot font], Terminus, Fixed, VGA 2. move hal and console-setup to xserver-xorg Recommends as others have requested - X runs without these though you may deem most users would benefit by installing these packages - the entire purpose of Recommends. Personally, I will keep both Hal and console-setup installed. I like hal. Console-setup installation is more for debugging purposes for me. Regarding console-setup, is there possibility of setting it in such a configuration right now to not change Linux's default console fonts? That is, it reads the current setup from Linux kernel without setting a new configuration. PS. I'm not on the list(s) - CC me in replies As requested. Thank you, - Adam PS. The problem occurs when less than five bytes have been read after the current package to be processed, a very frequent case except when the system is under high load. The result is that touchscreen data is discarded instead of parsed, rendering the touchscreen unresponsive. I have found the faulty logic and am attaching a patch which seems to solve the problem correctly for me, though it could probably use a second set of eyes to check for other thinkos. I am using a Palmax PD-1100, and with this patch applied my touchscreen seems to work fine. *** xserver-xorg-input-palmax-1.0.0.5/src/xf86Palmax.c Mon Feb 13 04:47:12 2006 --- xserver-xorg-input-palmax-1.0.0.5.fixed/src/xf86Palmax.cThu Oct 12 01:18:17 2006 *** *** 15,20 --- 15,23 #include xf86Module.h #endif + #include stdlib.h + #include string.h + /* *** * *** *** 28,34 #define DEFAULT_MAX_Y 61592 #define DEFAULT_MIN_Y 7608 ! #define XI_STYLUS TOUCHSCREEH /* X device name for the stylus device */ /* --- 31,37 #define DEFAULT_MAX_Y 61592 #define DEFAULT_MIN_Y 7608 ! #define XI_STYLUS TOUCHSCREEN /* X device name for the stylus device */ /* *** *** 301,307 bytes_in_packet = 0; start_ptr = ptr; ! while (num_bytes = report_size) { /* * Skip bytes until we hit a header (FE/FF) --- 304,310 bytes_in_packet = 0; start_ptr = ptr; ! while (num_bytes = report_size-bytes_in_packet) { /* * Skip bytes until we hit a header (FE/FF) ---End Message--- ---BeginMessage--- Version: 1:1.2.0-1+rm The xserver-xorg-input-palmax package has been removed from Debian so we are closing the bugs that were still opened against it. Sounds good! ACK. Excellent, let's figure out a good wording for the NEWS file and I'll upload it. Yeah, I wrote the NEWS entry in order to give users some sort of documentation, but since I don't use synaptics myself it's definitely a suboptimal entry. xserver-xorg-input-synaptics (1.1.1~git20090510-1) unreleased; urgency=low [ David Nusinow ] * Add NEWS.Debian entry about enabling tapping again (closes: #497523) I think it'd be nice if the NEWS entry explained how to do this with synclient rather than xorg.conf / hal. The disadvantage with synclient is that the configuration is not persistent. The xorg.conf way probably needs things like a ServerLayout section, and I'm not sure how well it'll keep working. Thoughts? This sounds good to me, although it might be a good idea to write either a section in the manpage devoted to setting this up and pointing users to that section in the NEWS file (e.g. Please see the section Tapping in your xorg.conf) so that users don't have to crawl through the entire manpage for what's very likely going to be a common thing. Another option is a separate document slipped in to /usr/share/doc/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics, but I think a manpage section that can be pushed upstream would be better. - David Nusinow -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-x-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
