Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?
Upgraded from 2:1.19.5-1 to 2:1.19.6-1

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
Downgraded back to 2:1.19.5-1

   * What was the outcome of this action?
It is now working back again.

I have upgraded xserver-xorg-core and xserver-xorg-legacy from
2:1.19.5-1 to 2:1.19.6-1. When I rebooted, the system (a T460s Thinkpad)
would start, but as soon as the X server is started, the screen would
turn black and no input would be accepted -- not even switching to the
text terminal.

The problem disappeared once I removed the file
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/30-scoll.conf with this content:

Section "InputClass"
Identifier "TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint"
Driver "libinput"
Option "ScrollMethod" "none"
EndSection

I have added the corresponding xorg log to the list of log files below,
note how it stops abruptly at

Dear Maintainers,

When X server is in background (i.e. when its tty is not active), it
doesn't react to SIGTERM and causes a shutdown delay.

I first noticed this after disabling Wayland in GDM by uncommenting
`WaylandEnable=false' in /etc/gdm3/daemon.conf. In this configuration
GDM uses X server (and doesn't shut it down when starting a user
session, so there are two X servers running: one for user session
(foreground), and still one for GDM (background)).

When I shut the machine down right from GDM without logging in, it went
OK. However, if I logged in and issued reboot from inside the user
session, shutdown was delayed for about 1 and a half minute, with the
following message in console: `A stop job is running for Session c1 of
user Debian-gdm'.

I enabled debug-shell.service, and here is what I got:

# loginctl session-status c1

As you see, the X server was still running. `kill -s SIGTERM 515' had
no effect. It required SIGKILL to shut down the process.

`pstree' gave the following output:

Looked like the InputThread thread was still running. It was confirmed
after attaching GDB to the server process at next shutdown (hence a
different PID):

Version: 2:1.19.3-2
Forwarded: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=101730
Affects: gnome-flashback

Dear maintainers,

As the upstream bug says, in xorg-server 1.19.3, XShmGetImage() incorrectly
crops the image grab to the absolute region (x,y)-(x+w,y+h). The comments in
that bug also contain instructions on how to reproduce it.

This affects gnome-flashback, where screenshots of CSD windows get broken.

If there is no easy way to fix it, maybe you can temporarily revert upstream
commit [1] or at least part of it?

Dear Maintainer,

* What led up to the situation?
Upgrading to version 1.20

* What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)?
xrandr --output DP-2 --auto --rotate left --output DP-1 --auto --rotate normal
--right-of DP-2

* What was the outcome of this action?
Second screen is black (see below, this is a known bug)

* What outcome did you expect instead?
The behavior it had before the regession introduced in 1.20

This bug is known and should be fixed upstream:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=106715

Any chances this fix gets added to Debian patch queue? Or do I have to wait for
the next release?

I did an "apt-get upgrade" today that installed new
xserver-xorg-{core,nouveau} packages. Now X does not start on my system.
The same segmentation fault occurs every time I run "startx".

No problem with icewm and probably other windows managers.

I have googled a bit about this problem and found a recent message in
debian-user about this very same problem,

[upgrade to X 1.20.0 broken]
https://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2018/05/msg01008.html

Problem has been confirmed by some people in that thread and it is suggested
to be triggered by the Xfce compositor

https://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2018/05/msg01035.html

As a matter of fact, if I disable the compositor, problem goes away.

I am filing this bug report against xserver-xorg-core because in other
reference about this problem in slackware,

https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/slackware-current-xorg-server-1-20-0-with-xf86-video-nouveau-segfaults-4175629581/

they suggests that it may be the real cause, with a a fatal interaction
between the "compositor" option of xfwm4 and xorg-server-1.20.0. It is also
noted that this may be a problem not only with the nouveau driver, but also
with radeon driver, both with xfce4.

In slackware they rebuild xfce4 with --disable-compositor as a workaround,
but in that thread they point to an old xorg-server 2009 commit as dealing
with this, not sure if that still applies.

Note: This bug report is sent from icewm, not xfce4.

Regards,

Agustin

Dear Maintainer(s),

this package still depends on transitional dummy packages x11proto-core-dev,
x11proto-input-dev, etc.
Shouldn't it instead just depend on x11proto-dev?

Best regards,
Jörg.

Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 2:1.20.0-2
Severity: normal

After updating to 2:1.20.0-2 from 2:1.19.99.901-1, the ability to rotate the
display via xrandr's --rotate stopped working.

I'm using an Intel Corporation HD Graphics 520 [8086:1916] (rev 07) from a
Lenovo Yoga 1st Gen, kms driver.

The cursor is still displayed, but the screen is otherwise black in any
orientation except for normal.

The issue is present with kernels 4.15, 4.16 and 4.17 rc7 from experimental.

Downgrading xserver-xorg-core to the previous version fixes the issue.

Package: xwayland
Version: 2:1.19.6-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

This started happening to me when I updated the system after a long time.

When I login into GNOME 3 (default session), the system appears to be loading
correctly, I can see the wallpaper and the activities bar, but before I can
interact with anything, the system crashes and I'm returned to the GDM window.

a core file is left on the HOME directory, which belongs to xwayland
executable.

I can start a GNOME classic or GNOME flashback session and no crash happens.

---

I don't know if it is related somehow, but since the same update, GDM login
window is displayed weird, I can't see the user names and some other characters
are missing (i.e. it says "GNOME Fl sh k" instead of "GNOME Flashback").

Package: xvfb
Version: 2:1.19.6-1
Severity: minor

Arch Linux has imported the xvfb-run script from Debian's package, but
our package dependencies do not mandate that the "which" utility be
installed. OTOH we do have it in our base package group, which users are
expected to have installed, although there is a bit of bikeshedding
about whether these unstated dependencies should actually be explicitly
listed... See the following xvfb bugreport on our bugtracker:
https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/56997

All that being said, this immediately made me think, why is the script
using `which` at all, rather than the POSIX `command -v` which is far
more portable as any #!/bin/sh shell has this as a builtin. It also
provides a micro-optimization by avoiding an external subprocess.

Please consider making this script more reusable by switching to the
POSIX shell builtin.

Example output on a system which does not have /usr/bin/which available:

$ xvfb-run some_command
/usr/bin/xvfb-run: line 139: which: command not found
xvfb-run: error: xauth command not found

(This error message seems rather redundant.)

Dear Maintainer,

while trying to watch the German TV show "Die Sendung mit der Maus" from
https://www.wdrmaus.de/aktuelle-sendung/, my Gnome desktop freezes. I can
SSH into the machine and see that Xwayland eats 100% CPU. The freeze can be
reproduced, it happened every time I accessed the above URL in Firefox 60.

I found a similar issue in the Red Hat bugzilla:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1579067

The issue mentions patches in
https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/series/43618/. I applied them to the
xorg-server source, built and installed the package and the freeze does not
happen anymore.

The patches are also attached to this bugreport.

Regards,
Tino

xorg-server fails to cross build from source, because its configure
checks for CLOCK_MONOTONIC with AC_RUN_IFELSE and then figures that for
cross compilation CLOCK_MONOTONIC likely is not available. It then gives
up, because wayland requires CLOCK_MONOTONIC. I think this is a bad
default as it always breaks cross compilation. I propose resorting to a
weaker assumption for cross compilation where only the presence of the
CLOCK_MONOTONIC declaration is checked and it is assumed working. Since
wayland requires CLOCK_MONOTONIC anyway, the check really is only a
sanity check. After fixing this, xorg-server cross builds successfully.
Please consider applying the attached patch.
