A yea, that ONE (missed it b/o package purged by now :(). But not in
either of xorg-docs_1:1.6-1 and xorg-docs-core_1:1.6-1, which seem to be
the most current ones.

And as I said the drm_i915 module is loaded with the 2.6.32-5-686
kernel, and the modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf entry is present as well,
X still 'finds no screens' and thus aborts.

Now how would I do that?

In both my custom 2.6.30 and std debian 2.6.32-5-686 DRM_I915_KMS is not
set -- and says: [...] will cause pain. [...] precludes loading things
like intelfb.

In 2.6.30 there is no DRM_KMS_HELPER. With the std debian kernel the
kms_helper module is loaded automa[gt]ically, but makes no difference.

xserver-xorg-video-intel up to and including 2:2.9.1-1 worked fine for
me. Unfortunately I can't find that anywhere, thus am forced to use
2:2.3.2-2+lenny8 from oldstable, which somehow seems to me not to work
as well (slowing things down).

There's no mention of KMS anywhere in the X accompanying docs.

Please convince me that Intel is NOT trying to produce a catchall for
915 different cards/chips, which practically only works on 50% of
them -- or maybe just not on the one I have!

Should you (hopefully) care to reply, please consider this as well:
Would it be appropriate to create a new bugreport that reflects the
actually described problem, or do we simply run on with the 'crashes
X'-subject?

Brgds, ed.

Bug#616086: xserver-xorg-video-intel: Arbitrarily crashes X

2011-03-06 Thread enno . vet
Believe it or not, I can't reproduce the behaviour. I must have
upgraded some lib involved in this, and I'm sure I won't be able to
re-establish the exact same software situation on my system, alas.

Instead now the xserver-xorg-video-intel thing doesn't even start at
all. No matter if on my custom kernel or std deb 2.6.32-5-686.

Again, xserver-xorg-video-vesa works.

The only abnormal finding in kern.log, occuring when starting xorg with the
vesa driver:
Mar 4 12:56:17 mash kernel: [20797.818002] mtrr: base(0xc000) is not
aligned on a size(0x7b) boundary
Mar 4 13:00:47 mash kernel: [21068.387185] mtrr: no MTRR for c000,7b
found
Mar 4 13:00:47 mash kernel: [21068.395407] mtrr: base(0xc000) is not

All other log files WNL (messages daemon.log debug etc.pp.).

now -intel uses KMS, plenty of features from the kernel, thus plenty
of bugs from the kernel. Moreover, squeeze's 2.6.32 has *a lot* of
fixes backported from newer kernel releases, so yes, that makes a
major difference in many cases.

If you can reproduce a crash, please check those pages:

Sorry for the mixup. I had in the meantime downgraded the driver to
have a working X available.

The video driver in question is:
xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.13.0-5

My kernel is a custom kernel of debian linux-source 2.6.30.
I doubt that a standard debian kernel would make any difference, as the
incriminated behaviour does NOT occur when using either
xserver-xorg-video-fbdev or xserver-xorg-video-vesa drivers (they're
just incredibly slow).

Moreover all prerequisites according to the README files regarding
kernel config are fulfilled.

But should you insist -- I'm prepared to do the test.

Video driver spontaneously kills xorg (without apparent causative user
interaction). Could be severe if occurring with other hardware as well.

Furthermore the driver seems to "grab" video and not releasing it again: black
screen apparently unresponsive to mouse or keyboard -- in fact the system is
listening on console but one has to type blind.
