A question for Declude...

Has Declude been tested with Imail
8.20?

Re: [Declude.JunkMail] Imail 8.20

2005-04-28 Thread David Franco-Rocha [ Declude ]

Scott,

No, Declude has not yet been tested with Imail 8.2,
although we expect to begin some testing very shortly. We have been in the
process of resolving some outstanding issues and preparing to do an interim
release. It would have been counter-productive to introduce a new IMail platform
in the midst of all of this. We are aware of a problem with one customer who has
tried to use Declude with the beta of IMail 8.2 (attachment corruption). This
customer also had problems with smtpd32 repeatedly going down, although this is
not likely related to Declude.

As soon as we have started testing and have any
feedback regarding the results, we will post them for you. If any of you have
any feedback you would like to provide to us, we would appreciate your letting
us know about it. Thanks.

I upgraded yesterday to Imail 8.2 and so far the phones
aren't ringing off the hooks. No reported problems from any of our
users. I've tailed the logs and they all seem normal. I am running
Declude Junkmail Pro/Virus Standard/Hijack 2.0.6.

Wow ...

this is the FIRST time in very many years that I actually
am pleased what they added.

Does anyone know if the "SPF connection filtering" truly is
DURING the SMTP conversation? If so, will it by bypassed if SMTP AUTH is
used? That alone would receive my message load by about
5%.

Anyway, lots of stuff that I've been waiting for - now the
question is, will I dare to upgrade before 8.2.5 is available
G.

Secure Socket Layer for POP, IMAP,SMTP. SPF -
IMail connection filtering SMTPD is now
multi-threaded and has been re-designed for better performance and
stability. SMTPD can now listen on all IP addresses or
only those configured. IMail no longer uses Winsock 1.1. All programs now use Winsock 2. SMTPD can now block connections after max invalid recipients
reached. SMTPD will close a connection after the
maximum number of invalid recipients have been reached. Support for
additional listen port in SMTPD

These types of errors are not related to Declude.
Authentication is handled directly with IMail during the SMTP dialogue. This
issue has already surfaced in the IMail forum.

There is really no problem posting this to the

at least cross-posted to the IMail list also.

Declude. Authentication is handled directly with IMail during the SMTP
dialogue. This issue has already surfaced in the IMail forum.

tailed the logs and they all seem normal. I am running Declude

  Scott,

  No, Declude has not yet
been tested with Imail 8.2, although we expect to begin some testing
very shortly. We have been in the process of resolving some
outstanding issues and preparing to do an interim release. It would
have been counter-productive to introduce a new IMail platform in the
midst of all of this. We are aware of a problem with one customer who
has tried to use Declude with the beta of IMail 8.2 (attachment
corruption). This customer also had problems with smtpd32 repeatedly
going down, although this is not likely related to
  Declude.

As soon as we have started
testing and have any feedback regarding the results, we will post them
for you. If any of you have any feedback you would like to provide to
us, we would appreciate your letting us know about it.
  Thanks.

It's the lack of Ipswitch documentation and discussion regarding the

Re: [Declude.JunkMail] Imail 8.20

2005-04-28 Thread Matt
I guess one of the big questions that I would have would be what would
happen if I installed on a new server and then imported my registry
settings over to it. Where's the unlocked identifier stuff stored? I'm
sure there are many other things as well to be concerned about such as
what came up around here in the MAC address discussion with Declude and
SmarterMail...

RANT ON
Anyway, I guess I am kind of insulted that Ipswitch would move to do
this after sticking it to us. Based on a conversation that I had with a
lawyer friend of mine, he indicated that Ipswitch's first move to stop
offering upgrades for IMail for service agreement holders while just
simply re-bundling the product was likely indefensible. So where's the
key that we can use to keep them from screwing us?

I'm one of those guys that doesn't like to jump through ridiculous hoops
to use a piece of software. The only stuff that I don't pay for is
stuff that I can't justify spending money on, which means they aren't
mission critical or I am just testing stuff out and can't justify
purchasing them up front. Excessive protections on such software has a
negative effect with people like myself since I will probably not become
familiar with such software so they will likely never get my money.
It's like shrink-wrapping a book. I think that reasonable protections
should be in there such as personally identifiable license keys and even
phoning home, but I for instance have no clue as to how to migrate
Windows 2003 from one box to another without doing more research, and I
would hate to have to do this in an emergency. The same goes for
IMail. If everyone was responsible about this stuff I wouldn't be
concerned but that clearly isn't the case.

I'm also very much against software and hardware being sold under a
non-transferable license. I will avoid such things whenever possible
now. If software isn't transferable, it should be sold as a service and
not as a piece of software, and hardware should be leased. To give the
impression of ownership by calling it otherwise is wrong, and I have my
doubts about the legality of some such provisions in boxed EULA's. I
was on the phone yesterday with WebTrends where they told me that my
copy of their software wasn't legitimate because I wasn't the original
owner and they don't transfer licenses...this is the same company that
moved from differentiating versions/prices of their software based on
functionality to one that was based on the number of profiles that you
had configured, to now basing it on the number of page views that their
reports generate. They even lock you out of their KB unless you have a
support contract with them...Egad! I say let them rot! Although their
software is generally very good, like Ipswitch they are getting killed
by much lower prices software that is less restrictive, in fact
SmarterStats is one of their competitors for a fraction of the price.
They won't survive doing business like that. Even Cisco
risks/experiences a loss of market share, and when that happens, they
will be so deep in the doo-doo that they wouldn't be able to afford to
back away from the non-transferable licenses.

Sandy,
Only the arrogant fools at NetIQ could screw up something like Webtrends
which was once the best stats tool available.

And unless they have changed something recently (which would come as no
surprise) they used to transfer licenses no problem. We acquired a
company a couple of years ago that owned several copies and they faxed

FTR and way OT, just got finished with my second extended flame mail
to NetIQ (WebTrends' former parent) inside sales, based on some
ridiculously condescending and secretive pricing discussions re:
AppManager. I'd love to see them go down. Of course, it's too late for
WebTrends to go down with them, as they've shuttled WT off to a
holding company of some sort.

Fwiw, it's the management of WT that's buying it out/back.

doubts about the legality of some such provisions in boxed EULA's. I
was on the phone yesterday with WebTrends where they told me that my
copy of their software wasn't legitimate because I wasn't the original
owner and they don't transfer licenses...this is the same company that
moved from differentiating versions/prices of their software based on
functionality to one that was based on the number of profiles that you
had configured, to now basing it on the number of page views that their
reports generate. They even lock you out of their KB unless you have a
support contract with them...Egad! I say let them rot!

We were a Webtrends customer until their latest round of pricing change. We
were paying about $4K a year in maintenance costs - but than they changed
their pricing model as you indicate. It would have costed us about 25 times
our normal maintenance cost to continue with 7.0 due to our page view
volume. Long story short we are parting ways after our one year grace
period of 7.0 ends.

I can't really say I am sad - for a high volume site (90+ million page
views) I have always had issues keeping the product stable. Unless
everything was limited data corruption seemed to be a frequent issue. Boy
was I thankful for the archive function in it.

Yes, multiple servers (10+) for this site. We are still in the process of
evaluation of a few of the major vendors now (Omniture, Web Side Story,
etc).

A question for Declude...

Has Declude been tested with Imail 8.20?
