RE: [Declude.Virus] BSOD and IMail-Server reboot

2004-06-12 Thread Gene Head
Doug,

I have recently had some issues with my mail server and BSOD and
corrupted files. What was happening was because of a bad memory stick
files were being either written to the drive with errors or not being
read back in correctly.
This caused errors to be logged in our event log and caused the machine
to Blue screen and reboot. I eventually took the machine offline and
replaced it for diagnostics and repair.

In my experience with Windows boxes and BSOD I have found they are
caused by:

1. Bad, outdated or incompatible drivers. You might look here for your
problem as a leaky driver would definitely cause the problem you are
describing.

2. Bad memory. It just has to be intermittent. It wont show up on
diagnostics it will just fail under load. (These are a real bitch to
find)

3. Bad motherboard

4. Bad processors. (Yeah, I've seen this on too. It's the last thing you
look for)

Each time your machine Blue Screens it should display a message that
sort of guides you to what the machine thinks caused the problem. In my
case there were several of them but the one that stuck out the most was
Page_fault_in_non-paged_memory.

If you would like to take a look at your event logs and post the BSOD
message we might be able to determine what is going on.

I did read a post someplace about certain motherboards and
hyperthreading issues. Not sure if the Xeon proc does that or not.

Hope this helps a little

This is very negative post John.

The SE7501WV2 is a $600.00 + Intel Dual Xeon SERVER Motherboard with a
Dual
Gigabit Server NICs. It is designed for server traffic.

This is the same EXACT Onboard NIC in IBM X series and HP Proliant
servers.
Dell uses the lower cost Broadcom Gigabit NICs.

The archives have no references to anything related to Server
motherboards
only desktop motherboards.

It seems to me when people have nothing to say say nothing.

In the future I will not reply to the list either and I apologize in
advance
for doing so. No one needs a post to tell them to do what will not
change
the situation anyway.

There has been much discussion concerning Intel OB NICs and Imail.

Search the archives.

Bottom line, get a solid Server designated NIC.

This problem has not gone away. It occurs with very high traffic only

and is not related to declude. That is we tested iot without declude
and it still Blue Screens when there is extremely high traffic.

Imail claims that when the server has extremely high traffic you need
 to
use
a SERVER NIC in the machine. One which does NOT offload processing to

the server but has it's own processor onboard the NIC.

This has some logic but if true why on servers running only SMTP
passing double the amount of sustained traffic do we not also have the
issue.

Using Intel Based SE7501WV2 baseboards with on board nics on sevweral
servers. Only Imail servers Blue Screen. We set them to auto reboot
 and
it
only happens in extremely high traffic times.

 Hi list and especially
 Peter Verzoni.

Peter you mentioned a while ago
the following problems you had on one of your servers:

Did you (or someone else) find a solution in the meantime, or did you
just switch to another AV ?

Would be great to get the link where you posted the info to F-Prot as
well.

 Thank you.

RE: [Declude.Virus] Imail Version 8.1

2004-04-23 Thread Gene Head
I installed them repeatedly to try and solve the problem. I finally
deleted all the .exe and .dll files in Imail and reloaded it from the
download, re-applied the HF2 and now I'm not getting the mailbox
unavailable (yet), but I am getting reboots due to a bug check.

I never did get LDAP to work right.

In my experience, no mailbox locked, maybe due to I installed these 2

Thanks for the link. I called them to get a price and ran into
another
 brick wall.

McAfee is like that. Their normal MO, though, is to oversell, doing
everything short of blatant lying to do so.

What you may want to do is try asking them I have one computer
running
Windows XYZ (for example, Windows 2003 Server or Windows 2000
Professional) and need one license of VirusScan or NetShield to run
on
it, what is my least expensive option?

If they ask you *any* questions, evade them (I don't know, I'll
have to
check with my boss, I really don't want to give that information to
you,
Please, just answer my question!, whatever).

If licensing may be an issue, take a look at their license, and have
whoever is in charge at your company (your boss, legal department,
etc.)
look at it and make a determination. Our reading is that you either
need 1
license per server running Declude, or 1 license per user on the
Internet
(millions of licenses). Other possibilities (but ones we don't read
in
their license) include one license per user of yours, or one license
per
copy that can be running simultaneously on the IMail server (the
MAXATONCE
option in the virus.cfg file can determine this number).

Gene,

This will only detect base64 attachments (there are three other encoding
formats that might be used), and only ones that follow strict MIME protocol in
the format specified. This is not by any means a safe way to tag all Zip
attachments, especially for virus blocking, however it will catch most,
especially the legitimate ones.

could this be with the i4 release of Declude or it just
happens that both of our scanners are now returning error.

Running 1.78 beta here.
Shows also error 5 in f-prot 3.14c.
Using Fprot 3.14b hasn't caused any error 5.

Thanks for the link. I called them to get a price and ran into another brick wall.

Very frustrating.

Do you remember where you bought it and what you paid?

Unfortunately, I do not have a SKU. However, this link will take you to the
product.

http://www.networkassociates.com/us/products/mcafee/antivirus/desktop/vs.htm

Don't be scared by the word desktop. VS 7.0 has both the server and
desktop version built into the installer.

Also, the current version is 7.1.

Do you have a part number/SKU for that?

I've called Mcafee and can't seem to get them to understand what I need.

They do have a version called VirusScan ASAP but they can't tell me if it
has scan.exe.

I believe you have the consumer version. The corporate version is still
at version 7.1. I know the corporate version has the scan/scan32.exe
files.

Scott,

I've re-installed it a couple of times but I haven't seen anywhere that
I can tell it to do a full install.

Does anyone have this version?

It's Mcafee Virus Scan Ver 8.0 Build 8.0.26

There isn't a scan.exe or scan32.exe on the drive.

You'll need to do a Full Install. That should get the scan.exe
installed.

[Declude.Virus] Mcafee

2004-02-24 Thread Gene Head
I just purchased Mcafee to use as a third scanner.
I installed it but I can't find the command line scanner.

Anyone have the new Virus scan program and can share the process for
getting this to work?

Typically the McAfee command line scanned, scan.exe, has been located
in
c:\program files\common files\Network Associates\VirusScan
Engine\4.0.xx, or
whatever version number you are running. Here is the McAfee entry from
the
Declude Virus manual at http://www.declude.com/virus/manual.htm:

SCANFILE C:\Progra~1\Common~1\networ~1\viruss~1\4.0.xx\scan.exe /ALL
/NOMEM
/NOBEEP /NOBREAK /UNZIP /SILENT /NODDA /REPORT report.txt
VIRUSCODE 13
REPORT Found
