[DUG]: dynamic series on a chart, and clearing them?

2003-11-02 Thread Chris Veale
Hi.

I have a tchart that at runtime I create dynamic series as required, now
when the user changes something (a radio button) I want to remove all those
previously added series and re-add them (the radiobutton is a sort method)

Can someone please tell me how to do this?

Cheers

  [DUG]: How do I create a Delphi executable which has no
  GUI?
  Hi all
  I want to call a Delphi executable by shelling out
  to DOS from a telnet session (in Universe). Since it's a telnet connection,
  and character based, it won't handle any Windows GUI. I'm wanting to execute a
  Report Builder report, which normally has the components dropped on a
  form.
  How do I stop a form displaying period - not even
  for an instant (when executing)? I wonder if a data module would do it? But
  then Report Builder design is all graphical, with the components on a
  form...
  If any GUI info is received on the Telnet
  connection, it then just ignores my exe.
  Am I trying to accomplish the impossible? (There
  are good reasons for wanting to run a report this way - i.e. not having to do
  a ton of coding to move a legacy app into Delphi).

[DUG]: Form size changing/scrolling?

2003-09-17 Thread Chris Veale
Hi all.

I have created a program that runs fine on desktop computers but when it is
run on laptops the forms do something weird and the user now has to scroll
them to see the full screen.

the first form I display is only 400 x 200 pixels but no matter what
resolution the laptop is set to the user has to scroll, even if its 1400 x
1080 resolution and the form is small in the center of the screen - without
having a need (technically) to scroll.

Can anyone suggest a solution to this? I've never come across this before.

Cheers

RE: [DUG]: tstringgrid sorting.

2003-07-27 Thread Chris Veale
thanks for that Warren it works like a charm...except.

I am trying to sort float values (in scientific notation) and consequently
the sort doesnt work.

for instance
1.0E-13 is sorted before
5.0E2 is sorted before
7.83E-28

ie dont based on string value of the cell contents and not the float...

I tried converting it to a float format of 0.0234 but this still doesnt
work.

Is it because Im using them as strings?

is there another way to quickly sort a tstringgrid contents based on a float
value? or would I be better to load an ayyar with the stringgrid contents.
Is there a way to walk the array and load a second (sorted) array?

Cheers

 Hi
 I have used the code below to allow sorting a stringgrid by
 clicking on the
 column header. Clicking again alternates between ascending
 and descending.
 The current sorted column is stored in the tag field of the
 stringgrid. I
 have deleted a few lines that are not required but should
 compile as below.

 procedure TForm1.StringGrid1(Sender: TObject;

 Hi all.

 I want to sort a tstringgrid in ascending order of one column
 but want to
 also order the rest of the columns also (change the order of the rows)

 Is there a function or something to do this or will I have to
 write a custom
 sort tool myself?

 Id prefer something like the tlistbox sort procedure but the
 difficulty
 comes when I want to organise the remainder of the columns also.

[DUG]: tstringgrid column width.

2003-07-23 Thread Chris Veale
Hi.

Is there any way to adjust the column width of a tstringgrid based on the
longest string entered in the column?

Im getting text cut off that id like to display but cant see any place of
changing it aside from defaultcolwidth property which changes all columns.

Cheers

[DUG]: tstringgrid sorting.

2003-07-23 Thread Chris Veale
Hi all.

I want to sort a tstringgrid in ascending order of one column but want to
also order the rest of the columns also (change the order of the rows)

Is there a function or something to do this or will I have to write a custom
sort tool myself?

Id prefer something like the tlistbox sort procedure but the difficulty
comes when I want to organise the remainder of the columns also.

Cheers

RE: [DUG]: readln?

2003-07-22 Thread Chris Veale
I was trying both readln and read for this (as I thought the readln would
work a little differently), but the read also didnt work.

I have a comma delimited string that I want to expload from a text file into
an array.

Ill have a liook at the commatext property now, that sounds like what I want
to use.

 Hi Chris,

 Surely if you've got one line of strings (i.e. there is only
 one CR or LF/CR
 pair) then the behaviour is as expected?

 If you only have one line of strings, how are they delimited?

 If they're comma separated, you could look at the CommaText
 property of a
 TStringList IIRC, which would then give you each of your
 separate strings as
 an entry in the stringlist.

 If you still want separate variables, then I think you're
 going to have to
 parse the line yourself, e.g. reading it character by character, and
 choosing when to break it yourself.

 Otherwise, I don't quite understand what you're trying to achieve.

 HTH,

 Conor

[DUG]: tregistry...

2003-07-22 Thread Chris Veale
Hi.

I just thought that if I am going to be having to process these regularly,
would it be better to store information in the system registry? there is
going to be lots of data, but I know tregistry replaces the old 16 bit
tinifile.

would this be an option if I have about 5000 lines of variables I want to
retain?

plus the same number for approximately 20 other files I need to reference,
or is this complete overkill?

I have never played around with the registry before and Im not sure of the
load or proper procedure for doing something like this.

essentially the files I'm referencing are lookup files that, when the user
selects a certain combination of variables in the program, we graph the vars
read in from the file.

Hope that makes sence.

RE: [DUG]: TChart Set LeftAxis Labels

its
bloody stupid actually, but what you have to do is set "any old string" to a var

  What I now need to figure out is how
  to set the Left Axis labels to display the contents of another field returned
  by my query for that record.

  does anyone know how to do this
  without affecting the data values?

  The closest i have come to success so
  far is:

  procedure GetAxisLabel(Sender:
  TChartAxis; Series:
  TChartSeries; ValueIndex: Integer; var LabelText:
  string);
  begin if Sender =
  FChart.LeftAxis
  then if
  ValueIndex  1
  then
  LabelText :=
  ''
  else
  LabelText := IBQuery1.FieldByName('system').AsString;
  end;

   WebActionWhatever;
  begin
  stuff
  GetAxisLabel(LeftAxis, HorizBarSeries,
  1,
  'any old string');
  end;

  But I keep getting a compile error :
  constant object cannot be passed as a var parameter.

  Anyone here know how to acheive
  this??

[DUG]: Can anyone tell me how to automatically detect proxy information?

2003-02-06 Thread Chris Veale
Hi.

I want to use wininet to detect proxy information from a local computer, now
I know there is a function internetqueryoptions, is this the way I should
go? Can anyone supply proper syntax for calling this method?

Is there any other way to access the proxy information? I was initially
retrieving this information form the registry but I think that will fail
when the computer has ceveral connections on the machine, I will not know
twhich is currently active.

I think this internetqueryoptions is my best bet.

Cheers

[DUG]:stringtodate problem?

2003-01-26 Thread Chris Veale
Hi.

I am trying to do a strtodate('01/01/1900');

This is used simply to determine an order of a sequence of dates so I do
this to set the earliest date.

Now on almost all computers this is no problem, but on ONE computer this
dies with an unknown exception and I can capture the following
information...

There is also a problem where the computers system date format was
mm/dd/ and this caused another problem, but I think ive fixed that one
with a formatdate call, but this one is really baffling me.

The OS is the same as I am running so I cant see an issue there, and the
system shortdateformat is now correct also.

Can anyone think what this could be? I know datetime is from 13/12/1899
could this be a problem?  should I change it to strtodate('01/01/1970');

cheers

RE: [DUG]:stringtodate problem?

2003-01-26 Thread Chris Veale
well the issue only happens on this one line, so ive changed that line to
encodedate but

Ive noticed that previously the user has run another process and performs
EXACTLY the same line (though the 01/01/1900' is stored as a variable not
hardcoded), but the user gets through this fine.

:( hmmm

 Hi Chris

 I find that it safer to use DecodeDate and EncodeDate when
 dealing with
 TDateTime - this way you don't have to be concerned with
 which date format
 is being considered by the conversion routine.

RE: [DUG]:stringtodate problem?

2003-01-26 Thread Chris Veale
im sorry I cant have made myself clear (not surptising)...

I mean I enforce columns in an f1book component to be entered in ascending
date format where the book looks like...

date1   date2   date3   date4
col1col2col3col4

and the dates are ascending so I set this var earlier than the first date
could ever be so I didnt have to write a special case for the first col.

and it still dies on strtodate('01/01/1900');

Ive just changed this to encodedate(01,01,1970); to see if this helps, but
as the computer is in Auckland I cant check any fixes till tomorrow, so Im
kinda flying blind at the moment...

Thanks all for your advice.

 Hi,

 If I am understanding what you are trying to do correctly, by
 earliest
 date you mean you are trying to get the earliest date possible that
 Delphi can store. Is this correct?

 If so, why not just set your TDate/TDateTime var to zero.
 This will set
 your datetime var to the earliest value that can be stored, namely
 30/12/1899 12:00 am

 HTH,

 Chris

how do you update it? by hand?

I have a string in the code detailing the version number, but I wanted to

sounds like this key-value is effectively the same as when Im doing except

 What we used is to create our oun Key/Value pair in the
 VersionInfo tab and
 manually update (increment) the version numbering
 ie Key VersionNumber Value: 1.84.0036 - That way the
 string can be
 anything you like (eg our current version 06.10.00)

RE: [DUG]: SQL Help

2003-01-16 Thread Chris Veale
hmmm from memory also I dont think delphi sql handles joins.

I believe when I was doing stuff like this I had to take the result set from
the first and load these into variables and then pass these to a seperate
query...

 OK. I guess that's what I was asking.

 So...Can I do

 SELECT (blah, blah) into MEMORY t1
 .
 ParamByName('StartDate').AsDate := Date1;
 ParamByName('EndDate').AsDate := Date2;
 Open;

 followed by

 SELECT (blah, blah)
 JOIN MEMORY t1 on d.LogCode = t1.LogCode
 .
 ParamByName('StartDate').AsDate := Date1;
 ParamByName('EndDate').AsDate := Date2;
 Open;

 Do I have to tidy up the Memory table when I've finished? and how?

[DUG]: Indy component no longer working, but....

2002-12-17 Thread Chris Veale
Hi all.

I am using an indy idhttp component in my app and it has never failed
me...till yesterday.

Yesterday morning I made some changes to the app and compiled and tested and
shipped out for beta testing (all working fine) and when the tester got it
at 1pm it died...

I then tried to recompile and test and it now dies on my system also (which
it didnt do previously). In the meantime I wasnt working in delphi at all
so Im certain I didnt do anything to stuff this up.

I am getting a estringlist error with the message string list out of
bounds (1) this is happening on a simple get command and is generated when
it tries to deletefoldedlines?

like I say Ive never had this happen before.

Now the interesting thing for me is that I ran previously compiled versions
of the app and they work fine, but when I take the code for these previously
compiled versions and recompile in the ide they now die with the same error
message.

below is the debug...captured from the error event

does this sound like a corrupt file or something? what else could it be? I
tried deleting exe and dcus and recompiling but it is still happening...

Im starting to think a reinstall of delphi may be the ticket here...if
anyone has some words of wisdon for a baffeled programmer it would be
gratefully appreciated.

never mind Ive fixed it now, not sure of the exact problem, but I suspect it
was a corrupt file somewhere (be it indy or delphi), a reinstall kicked the
problem to the curb.

[DUG]:changing compile conditions at runtime...

2002-12-05 Thread Chris Veale
Hi

I want to implement something like a passcode that when entered allows the
user to do something different than a user without that passcode. I have
all the functionality already in the code with compile conditions but from
all the help Ive looked through, I cant change this on the fly - it takes a
full recompile.

Is there any way of allowing this change at runtime using compile conditions
or am I going to have to rebuild the functionality with if statements?

Cheers

[DUG]: EInvalidOp - what is it and why am I getting it?

2002-10-24 Thread Chris Veale
Hi.

I am getting an EInvalidOp exception in a section of code I have that has
previously worked and I am certain I havent changed anything in that area
for months...this code is now not working and Im at a loss to explain why...

basically I am getting the error raised on this line

  s_thedate := format_date_2_mysql(trunc(e_mymean),s_yearname);

the format_date_2_mysql just takes a float and reformats the value to a
mysql date as follows and s_yearname is a string 2002
There are two functions that are called repeatedly initially that calculate
e_mymean but the result is 37500.63

function format_date_2_mysql(s_val:float;s_year:string): string;
var
  w_year,w_month,w_day:word;
begin
  //format the date to what we want

decodedate(strtodate(formatdatetime(s_date_format,s_val)),w_year,w_month,w_d
ay);
  if s_year = s_empty then
  begin
result := inttostr(w_year) + '-' + inttostr(w_month) + '-' +
inttostr(w_day);
  end
  else
  begin
result := s_year + '-' + inttostr(w_month) + '-' + inttostr(w_day);
  end;
end;

can anyone please tell me what this error is (I looked at the help file and
it could be one of three things but how can I tell which?)

also can anyone please suggest a process to follow to sort it out?

I think it has something to do with the data type I am using (extended) but
on the other hand I cant see this being an issue as this is the most
significant datatype for real anyway...

Hoping and praying for advice

 This has happened to me a couple of times, it indicates that
 the registry
 entry for the debugger kernel has disappeared. I don't know
 why this happens
 every so often.
 Follow this path which will hopefully help you fix you problem

[DUG]:urgent...Can someone please explain debugging a log file

2002-10-10 Thread Chris Veale

I have an error log created by drwatson and have to debug the app, can
anyone please tell me how I am supposed to do this and what has to be done.

I can see where the fault is (drwatson says fault-) in the log, but it is
represented in hex and I have no idea where to start.

I get no error in my app, seems to be windows related...also get no error on
my development machine so possibly library related?

Cheers

 I don't know this component, but most use zero based counts,
 not 1 based.
 Would this work?
 for i_count := 2 to Form1.F1Book1.NumSheets - 1 do
 begin
   form1.F1Book1.Sheet := i_count;
   form1.F1Book1.SetActiveCell(1,1);
   form1.F1Book1.Text := s_variable;
 end;

 Hi.

 I am using a formula one component that has multiple sheets
 on the first I have a dropdown box that when changed I want to
 update cells in the other sheets with the selection.

 doesnt sound too hard does it?

 when I put this into practice the application dies with an
 access violation in user32.dll

 I can update cells in the current sheet no problem but when I
 try to do the following the error occurs:

 for i_count := 3 to Form1.F1Book1.NumSheets do
 begin
   form1.F1Book1.Sheet := i_count;
   form1.F1Book1.SetActiveCell(1,1);
   form1.F1Book1.Text := s_variable;
 end;

 now the error doesnt happen here (inside f1book1objectchange
 procedure) it happens when that procedure exits so the above
 code executes fine until the procedure exits.

 if I take out the sheet assignment and just update the current
 sheet, it works fine and doesnt die on me, as follows:

   form1.F1Book1.SetActiveCell(1,1);
   form1.F1Book1.Text := s_variable;

 anyone got any ideas?

 Cheers

2002-09-24 Thread Chris Veale

actually Im using win2k and not doing anything with a printer (during this
operation), sounds like it might pay for me to reinstall delphi tho.

Do you know if I have extra components installed, do I need to reinstall all
these after delphi or will delphi pick these up if I install over the top of
the existing delphi install?

 I presume you're using XP?? I had the same problem (almost
 exactly) with my
 CADD program 2 days ago. Someone on the CADD forum suggested
 that it's a
 problem that is caused when the default printer is not
 present or can't be
 found. In the end, I did a System Restore to the day before
 (when I had
 done some major changes) and that fixed it. No idea what
 actually caused
 the problem.

RE: [DUG]: what does this error mean?

2002-09-24 Thread Chris Veale

I have done a little more research in this and the code is fine till I reach
the end of the procedure Im executing

procedure TForm1.F1Book1ObjValueChanged(Sender: TObject;
  var ObjName: WideString; ObjID: Integer);
var
   ..
begin
   ..
end;{TForm1.F1Book1ObjValueChanged} *this is the line that
when it executes causes the application error

now this code worked yesterday, and I didnt change anything overnight it
just stopped working, that is why Im at a little bit of a loss.

I havent tried rebooting yet, just restarting delphi, the reboot happens now
to see if that fixes the problem, and if not then a delphi reinstall

Thanks for the advice tho Conor

 Hi Chris,

 Tell me if I'm teaching you to suck eggs, but it's quite easy
 to get AVs in
 your code by e.g. referring to an object that doesn't exist
 any more etc.

 Even though the error message lists a Windows DLL (user32),
 this doesn't
 mean that it's not a bit of your code causing the AV.

 E.g., if you have two variables referring to the same object, and you
 destroy the object using one of the variables, you would
 still be able to
 call methods on the other variable, but you would be likely
 to get an AV,
 'cos the memory that the object resided at has been reclaimed
 by the OS.

 If it's not a problem with your code, it might be a bug in
 the component
 you're using.

 Again, I might have missed the point of your original email,
 but I hope this
 helps...

 Cheers,

 Conor

[DUG]: help with convert of dates?

2002-09-11 Thread Chris Veale

Hi.

I am trying to check
if a date is valid without raising a runtime error, but I cant seem to work it
out.

This is the code I
am trying

try strtodate(s_value);
except on EConvertError do
begin showmessage('The date "' + s_value + '"
must be entered in the format dd/mm/yy'); b_ok
:= false; end; end;
however this raises
a runtime error when the date is invalid as well as displaying my error
message.

Is there any way to
lose the runtime error message and solely display my error
message?

[DUG]: help with convert of dates?
Hi.

I am trying to
check if a date is valid without raising a runtime error, but I cant seem to
work it out.

This is the code
I am trying

try strtodate(s_value);
except on EConvertError do
begin showmessage('The date "' + s_value +
'" must be entered in the format
dd/mm/yy'); b_ok :=
false; end; end;
however this
raises a runtime error when the date is invalid as well as displaying my
error message.

Is there any way
to lose the runtime error message and solely display my error
message?
Cheers

[DUG]: printing text in a tchart

2002-08-08 Thread Chris Veale

Hi.

I have created a
chart with tchart and added the series in.

I performed some
calculations during this process and want to display the results to the user in
something wthat will also print out when I do a
tchart.printlandscape.

I want to try and
avoid the footer type stuff as these get put in specific locations and I want to
place the data manually.

Does anyone know of
an attribute of tchart that will allow me to do this?

Cheers

Chris

[DUG]: Retrieving data from XML streams

2001-11-12 Thread Chris Veale

Can anyone tell me how to retrieve data returned from an XML stream?

We are making a http request to a MySQL database and have configured the
system so that an XML stream is returned to the application.

I can display this resultset fine.but want to be able to retrieve the
data from the stream so that we can perform some number crunching on it and
provide other solutions for the user based on the retrieved data.

Any ideas?

Cheers

RE: [DUG]: Retrieving data from XML streams

2001-11-12 Thread Chris Veale

I only have delphi5 professional (archaic huh?)

The whole point of me looking for other ways of doing this is because of the
cost of D6 Enterprise

Will these parsers still work?

Cheers

 Get an XML Parser. There is the microsoft one, an IBM one, I
 think there are
 a few free ones,
 www.nothingbutnet.co.nz rings bells (PETER!!!), the Delphi-Jedi site - etc
 etc etc. Basically, if you have D6 enterprise, you
 can load it in from a string or file, and it puts it all nicely
 into a tree
 structure for you (you need a sample or XSD/DTD first tho). I
 dont know how
 the other ones work, but I'd guess its similar.

 Nic.
