Currently my system allows you to get a web based 'digest' of the last
month, last week, or todays list mail. I would add a search, but
currently
I'm the only one using it...

if you do, Peter, look at Lucene (www.lucene.com) - its a VERY cool
full-text-index package for Java.

Re: [DUG]: Alternative list hosting? - maybe the final word for a while

2001-07-11 Thread Nic Wise

Hi people,

OK, I've looked thru this, and I think I may know of a solution, but I need
a little time (and approval from Annie and Richard) to do it (to say I'm
busy at the moment is a little bit of an understatement - but you all know
THAT one).

I just need to check if ezmlm will do what we want, and if so, I'll set it
up on the Linux server we have in the office. The address may change
([EMAIL PROTECTED] for example) but other than that it would be the
same.

Get back to you in a week or so.

Nic.

There were some other issues raised like archives, address munging,
digest mode, multiple address subscription and so on. YG happens to
   offer all
  these
   features.

Then why dont we move over to YG then?

Have you read their privacy policy? At least they tell me about all
their privacy invasion practices in detail, but that doesn't make me
any more comfortable about using their services. And IIRC you need to
be a member of Yahoo (and party to their TOS) to subscribe to their
groups. And I hate ads, even tiny little text ones at the bottom of
 emails.

Having said that, if the list moved there, I'd still sign up, and I
can see the point of webarchives for people who don't just keep a
mail-folder with 6000+ archived messages in it like I do, and better
anti-virus checking for people who use Outlook. Still, I suspect
there's a better solution than YG to be found, and personally I'm
happy enough with the status quo.

Um - blocking viruses?

Is it a big issue? If an attachment comes through (like it did with this
particular one) the first thing that comes to mind is I bet THAT'S a virus
so I don't open it.

With the possibilities of viruses coming through email etc everyonne should
know NOT to open unknown attachments anyway.

If you use this group you should have enough common sense to not open these
things anyway.

Technology should not be seen as a replacement for common sense.

But you can block all unsafe attachments in Outlook. And Y! just admitted
that their attachment checker can't detect UUencoded attachments.

This list is already archived (perhaps the archive URL should be in
the list sig) so that's not an issue...

  and better
anti-virus checking for people who use Outlook.

Ah, well, Outlook. A point, certainly, if one has no choice but to
 use it...

Re: [DUG]: Alternative list hosting?

2001-07-09 Thread Nello Sestini

I'm not advocating changing or not changing (not that
anyone would care) but I think the claim that posts to lists
in YahooGroups always have adverts appended to them isn't
true.

I'm subscribed to several groups we use internally
and they don't have ads. There is a small TOS URL
and a few URLS for subscribing/unsubscribing tacked on.

The IBObjects and IBSupport lists (which are public
as opposed to the private lists i mentioned) are also
on Yahoo and they don't have ads either.

Finally, turnaround on the posts to the private lists
I mentioned looks like about 8 minutes.I don't know
of any posts to these lists that yahoo has lost (admittedly
not proof it doesn't occur). OTOH I do know that I
often get posts from the DUG/NZ server that are replies
to earlier posts that I've never received.

FWIW

Re: [DUG]: Alternative list hosting?

I'm on several lists on yahoogroups, the largest of which maxed out around
400 posts per day, things kept up quite nicely, with message turnaround
less than 8 minutes, but there was been on occasion when messages either
turn up late, or out of order (yahoogroups does handle a lot of mail, and
problems are bound to occur).

Also, on the advert thing, egroups always did have an option of paying a
fee to egroups and having the adds removed, but I don't recall seeing adds
on the YH messages you I think on it.

Note, that the above page is also a resource for Open Source Delphi Code.
It revolves around encryption currently, as that is what I was originally
concerned with in my project, but I am more than happy to include any Delphi
