[libreoffice-design] Re: Towards useful icon themes

2012-02-29 Thread ape
Hi Stefan,
I wrote that there is no icon in the error message
(https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=46777) and suggest solutions.
I can not agree with you to create icons 24*24 px:
 - Small in themes Tango and Industrial - 22*22 px, has a transparent
frame in a one px, which increases the size of icons to 24*24 px;
 - Themes Crystal and Oxygen (KDE) use size 22*22 px.
Please look at investing in an error - all icons LibreOffice MIME-type
(22*22) are inside the archive.
 Regards, Serg ape.

Re: [libreoffice-design] Revising the icon design process

2012-02-29 Thread Kévin PEIGNOT
Hi Mirek

I agree thi sa good design process that must be tried. Then about the
choice of align left / center / right, I'm not sure. We should begin with
icons for the read only application (as LibreOffice for Android will begin
as a simple reader before extending its functions), so icons like save,
maybe export as PDF, send by e-mail... For next week maybe ?

Kevin

2012/2/29 Mirek M. maz...@gmail.com

 Hi everyone,
I'd like to rethink the whole icon design process. Based on the last few
days, I feel that a lot of icon proposals were drafted cursorily, without
really giving thought to their function, to our current icons, to relevant
art from other applications, or to Android icons. I also feel like our
discussions could be more productive, delving deeper to find and fix the
 smallest issues.
So I'm proposing an entirely new design process, focused on a single topic
each week. This week's topic are *Align left*, *Align right*, and *Align
center *icons, which should be relatively easy to design. The deadline for
submitting drafts is this Saturday (wherever you happen to be, don't worry
about the time zone). You're also welcome to add links to images of prior
art if a certain alignment icon caught your eye. (All the submitted icon
drafts so far are still up on the wiki and we'll bring them up again.)
We'll then analyze the rough drafts and work on the final icons.

[libreoffice-design] Better branding (was: Re: Towards useful icon themes)

2012-02-29 Thread Stefan Knorr (Astron)
Hi all,

Ape wrote:

I took a look at the bug you link to and the screenshot you provide of
your icons (sadly, I can't open most of them in EOG).
So, first: thanks for working on our branding!

Here are some comments regarding your bug report,

A.1 Chart is a module that can be used from within any of the main
LibO applications (except Base). There is no way to save (currently)
to save a chart as an independent file (you can save as a PDF or an
image, but then you lose lots of information). IMHO, the current icon
doesn't need to be changed, because it's only an application icon so
far, not an actual MIME type icon.

A.2 I guess you're right, master document are always be opened by
Writer, so I tend to agree with the choice of a blue document border.
(Is there something I am overlooking?)

A.3 This one's tricky, because we're using the same icons for the
individual applications and for MIME types associated with them. I
believe the long-term strategy is to de-emphasise the applications and
focus more on documents (hence, The Document Foundation). If this icon
were used only for Writer/Web, then yes, it should have a blue border.
But most LibO apps can save to HTML and I believe we might need this
icon mostly as an MIME type. Hence, having different icons for
Writer/Web and for HTML might be a good idea for the future. For now,
I have to disagree with you.

A.4 I don't agree with this, either. While LibO's support for foreign
file formats is limited and will probably remain somewhat limited
(even though the developers are working pretty hard to get thigns into
a usable state), to users it should not matter much if they are
opening a DOC or an ODT – it will open in the same application and
enable them to do the same things.

A.5 You're right, we need a generic template icon which should also be
used for all these purposes, so yes, 27.ico is what we need.

B I believe we're doing this exactly as Microsoft advises us to:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa511280.aspx#size
Can you check what Windows does when we hand it a 96*96 icon additionally?

C I assume you mean the icons used for New element in the standard
toolbar? I hate that as much as you, but it's actually quite tricky to
fix as the icons don't have logical names at all and seemingly lay
around in semi-random places (see the other thread). (Also, this is
the one places where we currently require (for reasons unknown to me)
26*26 icons in all themes.)

D Hm. What icon do you mean? The drawing template icon does seem to
have a spiral binding.

Finally: How about editing the SVG that we have for our icons? That
should make the workflow a lot better than just editing the resulting
bitmaps.

Regards,

Astron.

Re: [libreoffice-design] Revising the icon design process

The feature set of the Android port is not set in stone yet. I don't think
work has even started on the UI layer. Save wouldn't really make sense
for a read-only app. Instead of Send by e-mail, LibreOffice should use
Android's Share button. There'll also be a file browser, the feature set of
which is also unclear.

I'm not sure how the Android LibO will deal with filetypes. Since there's
no visible central file management in Android -- all apps manage their own
files -- it'd be ideal if all files were stored as ODF files within Mobile
LibO and filetypes (Office, PDF, ...) were offered only when sharing
documents.

In any case, I chose to go with align icons as they're easy to design,
ideal for testing the new design process, and they're key functionality
that is going to end up in Mobile LibO once it gains basic text editing
features. I deliberately avoided choosing a topic for which Android already
bundles an icon (like Search or Share), since we're free to bundle this
icon under the proper license (MIT).

Once Android developers give word about the UI/features planned for the
initial version of their LibO port, I'll propose the topics accordingly.
For now, though, it's just a guessing game.
