[libreoffice-design] 2016 budget proposals

2016-02-10 Thread Florian Effenberger

Dear community,

the year 2015 is over, and we have achieved a lot of exciting things,
thanks to your amazing work, dedication, passion and support - thank you
so much for being part of our community and working with us on the joint
goal of fostering LibreOffice!

In order to support the community even better, we would like to create a
better budgetting process, have a concrete plan for 2016 already now,
with a few "pools" or "buckets" defined, ideally:

1. community events (aimed at getting face-time for community contributors)
2. infrastructure (e.g. compute power/hardware/storage, cloud, VMs),
3. marketing (aimed at representing the project to the outside world)
4. other (anything that does not fit into the above)

The idea is to have a good plan for 2016 already now, while keeping the
administrative overhead low, and have two authorizers (one of them being
a board member or deputy, the other one from the wider community)
responsible for each budget, which means getting receipts, approving and
tracking expenses, and clarifying questions with Florian or Sophie.

To get a better understanding of your needs, we ask you to send us your
budget requests within *three weeks* from this e-mail, i.e. by
2016-03-02 to flo...@documentfoundation.org

While I monitor some of the lists, please always send your
proposals/requests *directly* to me so they are not lost!

Please let us know your requests for funds *alongside* some items you
envision to be paid from these funds. The items are not binding, the
spending in the end is the responsibility of the authorizers, but some
examples help the board in getting a better understanding of the funds
required to best match your needs. If possible, please also mention the
amount of travel costs associated. We'll factor in some margin, but
concrete numbers and ideas are very much welcome to have a plan for 2016.

As a sample, a request could look like this:

##
We'd like to request a 2016 budget of
1000 € for community events
500 € for infrastructure
1500 € for marketing

Expenses we envision are
1. marketing: attendance at XYZ trade show to show LibreOffice to ABC
user group (700 € booth costs, 300 € for collaterals and 500 € of
travel, totalling to 1500 €),
2. community: a community weekend to discuss tasks and ideas (600 €
hotel, 100 € for snacks and 300 € travel, totalling to 1000 €),

3. infrastructure: dedicated server to QA localized versions (500 €)
##

Alongside that, we will also provide some mechanism in Redmine for
approvals and tracking of expenses, and will follow-up with details on
this later on.

Thanks again for all your work, and looking forward to your proposals!

Florian

I noticed that and I am happy you decided to set up this tender, esp. as it

It is great to see how our work actually affects your decision making and this
is a great appreciation for us, but especially for our users - in the end it
is all for their benefit. Thank you for that!

thanks for your positive feedback, and also for your helpful feedback on
the Android tender, which is really appreciated! As outlined, UX is an
important part for the project, even if work package #3 has not been
awarded for the Android tender.

That being said, the Android port is an ongoing effort. We of course
will consider your feedback for future developments here, as the base
framework is just a first step. I am very much looking forward to the
results of further developments in that area!

Thanks again for your valuable feedback and effort, which is really
appreciated!

Dear fellow UX community board of directors!

I have to write this mail, because I feel very unhappy about the result of the
LO-Android Tender [1].

thank you for your mail and your feedback on the tender.

The Android tender is a major project for TDF, and we have invested lots
of time and resources into making it happen. We are sorry that you feel
the absence of work package #3 is critical to the success of the Android
project.

Rest assured that UX is as important to the board as all other topics.
For example, just yesterday, we have published a tender for user metrics
collection, which shows our commitment to this topic.

Can you point out what major interface decisions have been taken in the
Android tender work so far that would need revisiting?

Thanks again for your feedback,

as for the subdomain, we are right now migrating a few VMs to a new
machine due to capacity and load problems - the VM where the new website
is in still needs to be migrated, Gerrit and AskBot had a higher
priority as they are production systems.

@Cloph, Alex: Any ETA on when the new VM will be available?

As for the website itself, there are still some pieces missing, mostly
the download page, which were not yet delivered. We are setting up a
confcall next week to find a way to finalize those pieces.

It's not incompatible per se, but while I was migrating, I discovered

No I have not, that will require a good specification of what those

to move the page elements around a bit. The Planet blog also has no
proper header and footer, just placeholders.

do you have access to the original template we use? I think adjusting

[libreoffice-design] Seeking for list moderators

2013-05-04 Thread Florian Effenberger

Hello,

at the moment, we are looking for volunteers who could help moderate
this mailing list.

If you are interested, the only requirement is that you are subscribed
to the list yourself and read its mails in a somehow timely manner, but
that's about it.

Moderation means dealing with e-mails that do not automatically make it
to the list, which you then manually forward, or reject. This happens
either when an e-mail comes from an unknown sender, e.g. when a project
member uses a different address for posting. It also occurs when someone
unexperienced writes to the list, thinking it's a private account, but
in fact it's a public list.

You'll receive the message to be moderated via e-mail, which you then
can either moderate through, or reject.

Is someone interested in joining our efforts? It'd be much appreciated -
just drop me an email (please also copy me directly, and not only the
list), then I'm happy to add you to the list of moderators.

Thanks!

[libreoffice-design] Fostering project internal communication

2013-05-04 Thread Florian Effenberger

Hello,

sorry for spamming all the lists, but in the light of recent events and
discussions, I'd like to make all of you aware of an important mailing
list, that so far has not been used as extensively as it should be,
which led to some frustration and communication issues.

As part of our mission to foster the project internal communication, I'd
like to tell you about our so called projects mailing list, which Sophie
initiated quite a while ago, and which should be used for communication
amongst the various projects - e.g. design and marketing, development
and marketing, UX and development, and the like.

The list's intention is not to be a gossip list where everything should
be thrown at, but to make all affected projects aware of important
changes. Philosophy: Low traffic, but important topics.

Some examples are: Change of version numbers, a new slogan, design
changes, new products. In other words: Everything that has an impact on
other areas of working than the one where the change originally comes from.

If one team decides LibreOffice will now be called different, and has a
shiny new colour, surely marketing should know in time. Well, a bit of a
made up example, but you get the point... ;-)

We have seen some unpleasant events in the past, that based on my
experience, are mostly due to the lack of communication, or due to
miscommunication. To avoid that in the future, I'd like to call out to
everyone of you, if you are active in one of the subprojects, to also
join this mailing list by sending an empty e-mail to

projects+subscr...@global.libreoffice.org

and following the instructions mailed back. At least one or two
representatives from *each* project should join this list, to act as a
gateway.

I will soon follow up further with some details and topics that have
reached me the past weeks, and how we could solve them.

Again, sorry for spamming, and have a great weekend!

[libreoffice-design] feedback needed for TDF annual report

2013-03-11 Thread Florian Effenberger

Hello,

one of the legal requirements of running a foundation is to send in an
annual report. In fact, it's two reports: One financial report, which
mostly Thorsten takes care of (thanks so much!), and one activity
report, which is mostly on my desk at the moment.

We need to list all activities we have done, all milestones achieved,
and hand that over to the authorities, to show that we have been doing
what's outlined in our statutes, and that we were active and not just
collected money. ;-)

This report is due end of April, and to be in time and have some reserve
for changes and translations, the board wants to approve it end of March
(!) already. It must be formally approved by the board.

I will look at the announce mailing list as well as the blog, but the
more material I receive, the better it is. So, today, I would like to
ask everyone in the community for feedback:

- What major achievements have you done?
- What events did you participate in?
- Did you get new contributors, donors, supporters?
- Did you participate in any third-party projects on behalf of
LibreOffice?
- What were your highlights of the previous year?

In a nutshell: We are about to write a review of our first year as
foundation. The good news is, we have been very active. ;-)

The report will be public, so please only send in information that is
meant for the general public. It does not need to be too technical, so
rather than telling we have implemented function XYZ, improved API
functions ABC and so on, make it understandable for a wide audience.

So we can collect all documents in one place, please send your feedback
directly to i...@documentfoundation.org (I am not subscribed to all
mailing lists). Images, videos, slides and other materials are highly
welcome as well. You would *really* help me a lot if you could send
already some written text I can work with, but if that's not possible,
some keywords are ok as well.

2012 was an exciting and very successful year for TDF, so let's present
this to the public - thank you for your cooperation on this!

Thanks a lot!

[libreoffice-design] LibreOffice Conference - registration deadline ends tomorrow

2012-10-07 Thread Florian Effenberger

Hello everyone,

just about one more week, and this years' LibreOffice Conference takes
place in Berlin. I would like to remind you that the *deadline* for the
registration ends tomorrow,

Monday, October 8th, 2012, at 21:59 UTC

If you want to attend the conference, and didn't register so far, we
urge you to do so within the deadline at

http://conference.libreoffice.org/registration

The LibreOffice Conference 2012 takes places in a public building of
German ministries, and without proper registration, you can *not* enter
the event. So, in your own interest, please ensure you meet the deadline.

In case you do not want to attend the conference yet, I'd like to
advertise a bit more. :) Our program committee has invested lots of time
to make this conference an unforgettable, noteworthy event, and we are
proud to have a program with a vivid mixture of development, community,
marketing, infrastructure and many other working areas of the
LibreOffice project:

http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/File:LiboCon2012.pdf

Last but not least, this is your chance to meet the faces behind the
LibreOffice community: developers, marketeers, admins, localizers,
documentation writers, designers and many, many more. We'll all have a
great time in Berlin, and want you to be a part of it!

Taking place at the conference center of the Federal Ministry of
Economics and Technology (BMWi), and sponsored by leading players
Canonical, Google and SerNet, it is not only the annual gathering of the
worldwide community, but also meeting point for governmental and
corporate adopters and innovators.

Looking forward to meeting you in Berlin!

[libreoffice-design] Does wiki want to come out and play?

2012-10-05 Thread Florian Effenberger

Hello,

I spent the last week with setting up our new wiki. I've copied all
articles, users and most configuration settings, and enhanced them,
based on the recent MediaWiki version.

What is currently missing:

- multiple languages
- caching (thus it might be slow)
- autopromoting/autoconfirming (spam protection)
- WYSIWYG editor (there exists none)

I've also enhanced spam protection, but that might trigger false alerts.
So, what I'd like as feedback from you now is:

- bugs and problems
- feature and extension requirements
- proposals on what to change

Please check your favorite page if it renders allright, please check if
all the functions work, and if any of the newly-introduced limitations
for spam protection interrupt with your productive work and of course,
let me know, what functionality you are missing, since now is the best
time to include it.

One word of warning, I can't emphasize that enough:

This wiki is for TESTING PURPOSES only.
Users, articles and settings - in other words: ANYTHING -
created here WILL be deleted when the testing is over.
There are NO backups. Content WILL break.
Do NOT use this wiki for anything productive.

So, after you've read all those warnings :) here you get the URL for
testing:

http://wikitest.documentfoundation.org

Please direct feedback to webs...@global.libreoffice.org

Thanks a lot for your support, and looking forward to migrationg to the
new wiki soon,

Florian

[libreoffice-design] Reply settings on this list have changed

2012-08-12 Thread Florian Effenberger

Hello,

this is to inform you that the reply settings on this list have changed
(so-called Reply to mangling has been disabled).

So far, e-mails had set a reply-to the mailing list address. In other
words, with any e-mail client, replies to e-mails on the list were
automatically sent directly to the list.

In the past, this lead to two major problems:

1. Several times, people have sent direct replies to the public list,
where deleting them is nearly impossible. I remember at least one case
where confidential information has been sent out that caused lots of
worries for the sender and his employer. This happened because people
hit reply and thought it would reply to the sender only.

2. I have heard complaints in the past from people, stating that working
with the non-developer lists of LibreOffice is a pain for them, because
of reply-to mangling, resulting in a lack of communication. This also
led to the fact that numerous tasks were done by the same people, who
needed to spend more and more time, instead of sharing the work burden
with others. While I do not fully believe this argument, there's just
one way to find out...

Therefore, I have applied a change:

Replies to e-mails from the list now only go to the original sender. You
either need to use the reply to all feature of your e-mail program, or
- preferably - the reply to list/reply to group feature, which will
direct replies directly to the list.

This is common practice on most mailing lists, and even the default
setting for our mailing list software, so we did not re-invent the wheel
here. Those seeking for details should have a look at
http://www.unicom.com/pw/reply-to-harmful.html

I know we had numerous discussions on this topic in the past, but the
outcome was that roughly 50% were for this change, and 50% refused it,
so I am really sitting between two chairs here, for which I beg for your
understanding. On the one hand, those complaining the lists are unusable
with reply-to mangling, on the other hand, those complaining the lists
are unusable without reply-to mangling. Unfortunately, combining those
two, even on a per-recipient basis, is not possible, so they are
mutually exclusive to each other.

In order to find out the real impact, I simply changed the setting, and
again, I beg for your understanding.

Do not worry: The mailing lists are for the community, so it's the
community deciding how they should work. What I'd like to ask all of you
is to try out for a few days if that change is good for each list or
not. Should we find out it is more harmful than it helps, I will
immediately switch back to the old behaviour.

Sorry for this short notice, and I beg for your understanding that I'm
somehow sitting between two chairs here.

Can you create printable PDFs out of them, with the right proportions?
The PDF itself should be 78x39 mm, the printable area should be 74x35 mm.

We're currently discussing about building a network of marketeers for
the LibreOffice community, and I've just initiated a discussion on our
global marketing mailing list.

Those of you who are interested in marketing, and those of you want want
to communicate this idea with the local teams, please have a look at the

Please do *not* reply on the mailing list you've received this e-mail

[libreoffice-design] address change working

2011-06-10 Thread Florian Effenberger

Hi,

I managed the first change of the addresses.

1. The archives from listarchives.libreoffice.org/www are now available
at listarchives.libreoffice.org/global, with an automatic redirection in
place

2. The lists previously available @libreoffice.org are available now at
@global.libreoffice.org, with the old addresses working for a few more
days (but will vanish soon)

3. The headers have been modified, so chances are you have to adjust
your e-mail program filters.

4. The e-mail footers have been modified as well.

I will take care of the mail archives and GMANE tomorrow. If you run
into any issues, please let me know.

Things should work, but I'm not finished yet, so the rest will follow
tomorrow.

Thanks,

[libreoffice-design] changes for this mailing list

2011-05-25 Thread Florian Effenberger

Hello everyone,

as part of our membership process, we also would like to give
@libreoffice.org e-mail forwarders to our approved members. Thanks to
the folks from Heinlein Support in Berlin, who offered to take care of
the mail forwarding and to program a web tool to enable users to
configure the forwarding!

In order to be able to use two different mail servers -- one for mailing
lists, and one for the mail forwarders -- we have to change the
addresses of a few mailing lists.

In a nutshell: All lists currently known as @libreoffice.org will in the
future be known as @global.libreoffice.org

In detail:

accessibil...@libreoffice.org = accessibil...@global.libreoffice.org

design@libreoffice.org = des...@global.libreoffice.org

documentat...@libreoffice.org = documentat...@global.libreoffice.org

l...@libreoffice.org = l...@global.libreoffice.org

market...@libreoffice.org = market...@global.libreoffice.org

proje...@libreoffice.org = proje...@global.libreoffice.org

us...@libreoffice.org = us...@global.libreoffice.org

webs...@libreoffice.org = webs...@global.libreoffice.org

You do *not* have to un- or resubscribe from any lists, as the list of
all recipients will be automatically transferred to the new addresses.
The subject prefix, like [libreoffice-website], will also stay the
*same*. What *will* change is the address you have to send e-mails to,
and the headers like List-Post and List-ID. So, in case you filter your
e-mails based on the headers, you *do* need to act. This is most likely
the case if you use a local mail client like Thunderbird. Webmail
services like Google Mail usually do *not* make use of these headers.

The change will be effective during the day of

Thursday, June 9th

I will send a follow-up e-mail when the addresses have changed.
Immediately after that, assume the old addresses will stop working. I
will try to set them as aliases for a few days, but I cannot guarantee
it will work out.

However, *no* e-mail will be lost -- in case there is no alias in place,
you will receive a bounce message and can re-send the mail again.

Sorry for these inconveniences, but they will help us in providing
e-mail forwarders for our members.

In case of questions, feel free to ask me directly, or on the website@
mailing list.

[libreoffice-design] Six Months of Freedom and Community

2011-03-28 Thread Florian Effenberger
On September 28th, 2010, The Document Foundation was announced. The last
six months, it feels, have just passed within a short glimpse of time.
Not only did we release three LibreOffice versions within three months,
have created the LibreOffice-Box DVD image, and brought LibreOffice
Portable on its way. We also have announced the LibreOffice Conference
for October 2011 and have taken part in lots of events worldwide, with
FOSDEM and CeBIT being the most prominent ones.

People follow us at Twitter, Identi.ca, XING, LinkedIn and a Facebook
group and fan page, they discuss on our mailing lists with more than
6.000 subscriptions, collaborate in our wiki, get insight on our daily
work in our blog, and post and blog themselves. From the very first day,
openness, transparency and meritocracy have been shaping the framework
we want to work in. Our discussions and decisions take place on a public
mailing list, and regularly, we hold phone conferences for the Steering
Committee and for the marketing teams, where everyone is invited to
join. Our ideas and visions have made their way into our Next Decade
Manifesto.

We have joined the Open Invention Network as well as the OpenDoc
Society, and just last week have become an SPI-associated project, and
we see a wide range of support from all over the world. Not only do
Novell and Red Hat support our efforts with developers, but just
recently, Canonical, creators of Ubuntu, joined as well. All major Linux
distributions deliver LibreOffice with their operating systems, and more
follow every day.

One of the most stunning contributions, that still leaves us speechless,
is the support that we receive from the community. When we asked for
50,000 € capital stock for a German-based foundation, the community
showed their support, appreciation and their power, and not only donated
it in just eight days, but up to now has supported us with close to
100,000 €! Another one is that driven by our open, vendor neutral
approach, combined with our easy hacks, we have included code
contributions from over 150 entirely new developers to the project,
alongside localisations from over 50 localizers. The community has
developed itself better than we could ever dream of, and first meetings
like the project’s weekend or the QA meeting of the Germanophone group
are already being organized.

What we have seen now is just the beginning of something very big. The
Document Foundation has a vision, and the creation of the foundation in
Germany is about to happen soon. LibreOffice has been downloaded over
350,000 times within the first week, and we just counted more than 1,3
million downloads just from our download system — not counting packages
directly delivered by Linux distributors, other download sites or DVDs
included in magazines and newspapers — supported by 65 mirrors from all
over the world, and millions already use and contribute to it worldwide.
With our participation in the Google Summer of Code, we will engage more
students and young developers to be part of our community. Our improved
release schedule will ensure that new features and improvements will
make their way to end-users soon, and for testers, we even provide daily
builds.

We are so excited by what has been achieved over the last six months,
and we are immensely grateful to all those who have supported the
project in whatever ways they can. It is an honour to be working with
you, to be part of one united community! The future as we are shaping it
has just begun, and it will be bright and excellent.

[libreoffice-design] Thousands of donors contribute €50,000 in just eight days to The Document Foundation

2011-02-25 Thread Florian Effenberger
Thousands of donors contribute €50,000 in just eight days to The
Document Foundation

LibreOffice Community accomplishes next major milestone
Ongoing donations to support marketing, infrastructure and development

The Community around LibreOffice, the free personal productivity suite,
has accomplished the next major milestone in establishing The Document
Foundation as a legal entity. In just eight days, some 2,000 donors from
all over the world contributed €50,000 for the capital stock necessary
to set-up the legal entity in Germany.

We still can't believe it, says Florian Effenberger, Steering
Committee member. It happened in such a short period of time and was
beyond our wildest expectations. You all really rock! On behalf of the
Community, the Steering Committee would like to thank all the donors for
their generous support.

The €50,000 collected will form the Foundation's paid-up capital,
ensuring a permanent future for the organization after the legal
paperwork is complete, based in Germany. The capital will be frozen
assets for the Foundation: the funds cannot be spent, and we will be
able to avail just the annual interest. All money donated from now on
will actually bankroll our ongoing running costs for things such as
marketing, hardware, infrastructure, attending trade shows, initial
financing of merchandising material and, of course, developing new and
exciting ideas.

So we still need your support: Every donation helps to pay for our
future operational running, Effenberger adds.

will be spent are available at http://challenge.documentfoundation.org

[libreoffice-design] banner after 50.000 EUR

2011-02-23 Thread Florian Effenberger

Hello,

sorry if this has been raised before, but do we already have a banner

Maybe some surplus counter with the amount of money we received after

[libreoffice-design] LibreOffice Community starts 50,000 Euro challenge for setting-up its foundation

2011-02-16 Thread Florian Effenberger
LibreOffice Community starts 50,000 Euro challenge for setting-up its
foundation

German-based model provides best stability and safety for users,
adopters, developers and enterprises

Race for funds open until March 21st

The Internet, February 16th, 2011 - The community around LibreOffice,
the free office productivity suite, today announced its fifty-thousand
Euro challenge for setting-up The Document Foundation as a legal entity.
The race for funds is open until March 21st 2011, which marks the
beginning of Spring in the northern hemisphere. All users - especially
enterprises - are invited to donate to the capital stock of the future
foundation.

After thorough investigation, the Steering Committee came to the
conclusion that a foundation based in Germany would provide the best
stability, not only for our users, but also for adopters, developers and
enterprises. For achieving this stability, a capital stock of at least
50,000 Euros is considered best practice in Germany, says Florian
Effenberger, Steering Committee member of The Document Foundation. Now
that we have our first release of LibreOffice, which has been downloaded
and installed all around the world, the time has come to legally
establish the future home for our community.

All donations will be used for setting-up The Document Foundation, and
after the fifty thousand Euros has been collected for the capital stock,
donations over the top of that sum will be fed directly into the future
foundation's budget to cover operating costs. Should the race for funds
not succeed, The Document Foundation will use the donations to
incorporate itself in a different country that requires less capital
stock, such as the United Kingdom.

To achieve their ambitious goal of a Foundation in Germany in just five
weeks, the community has set-up a dedicated website with detailed
information at http://challenge.documentfoundation.org The site will
also give adopters, community members and corporate sponsors a voice,
and will have special features rolled out at the accomplishment of each
donation milestone.

We have seen wide support from many organizations, and the amount of
volunteer work that has been put into The Document Foundation is just
amazing. Without people donating their free time, knowledge and
creativity to what will be the future home of LibreOffice, we wouldn't
be where we are today. However, volunteer work alone can't fund the
necessary capital stock, which is why we have started a public race for
donations, especially targeting contributions from enterprises and
public administrations adopting LibreOffice, and those interested in an
independent, vital and growing ecosystem around free office productivity
software, Florian Effenberger adds.

thanks for your contribution -- the English version should work now ;)

[libreoffice-design] banner for publisher website

2011-02-14 Thread Florian Effenberger

Hello,

a large German publisher agreed to offer us a free banner advertising
for our fundraising campaign -- woohooo! :-)

They need the banner in a size of 600 height, 160 width.

Maybe you can take that into account when designing, so we can also
export it in that size?

Thanks so much!

Re: [libreoffice-design] banner for fundraising

2011-02-13 Thread Florian Effenberger

Hi Bernhard,

Bernhard Dippold wrote on 2011-02-13 03.24:

I posted there an idea (using 468x60px) for a banner size.

would be ok for me. I am no expert, so whatever you propose sounds good
to me. :-)

Shouldn't we involve the marketing team in this topic?

The marketing team has been informed about various ideas, but the
overall feedback hasn't been that great. I will send out a PR on the
fundraising tomorrow or on Tuesday and will *not* wait anymore, as there
has already been lots of time, and we're running out of time until the
deadline. :-(

We could use a common slogan for this fundraising - not only on our
banner, but on other marketing material (web buttons, flyers, posters,
etc) too.

Any advice and input is welcome! We can add material after we started
the fundraising, but I want to at least start it by Monday or Tuesday,
otherwise we will lose important time...
