[libreoffice-design] The ways to improve Start Center

2016-12-17 Thread Mateusz Zasuwik
Hey

I have some ideas I need to share with you.

1. Firstly. If you are working with many documents and they are repeatedly
rotating, it's sometimes hard to find the ones you are working frequently
with. A big help would be bookmarking system known from other softwares.
Just mark specific document and it will stick to the top of start center
board.

Mock up:
https://bug-attachments.documentfoundation.org/attachment.cgi?id=129724
Report: https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=104736

2. If not bookmarking system, maybe there should be search filed? Let user
just type name of document he/she is looking for!

3. I am working with so many documents, that thumbnails become bigger
troublemakers than help for me. What do you guys are thinking about
additional type of view? I propose good, old view of listed documents in
regular rows (with bookmark system).

[libreoffice-design] Not visible cursor in colored background

2016-04-19 Thread Mateusz Zasuwik
Hey

I have spreadsheet with many cells colored in green or red. They are basic
colors from default palette. The problem is that cursor in hardly visible
on green background.

Could it be stronger and more distinctive?

[libreoffice-design] Proposition for default theme

2014-01-13 Thread Mateusz Zasuwik
Hey

What do you think about this composition?

http://i.imgur.com/KmABRIf.png

It's Bird lovin theme (
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/bird-lovin/ ) with #e0fad5
background color. It's still clear and pretty nice for eyes. It could help
single out LO from AOO.

Re: [libreoffice-design] Re: Start Center Niggles

2013-12-13 Thread Mateusz Zasuwik
1. Please, add Open and Templates icons from current build (
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/images/e/e4/4.2_start_center.png )
2. Remove Help button (from bottom, left corner). There is the same
button above the toolbar (menu File, Tool,
Help). Instead of give users button-link to template's repository (next to
button-link to extensions' repository)
3. Give back normal components name, that is Text document,
Spreadsheet, Presentation, Drawing, Formula, Database. Current
names will look horrible after translated.

Can we delete single document and how can we delete all document at once?

2013/12/13 Jan Holesovsky ke...@collabora.com

 Hi Mirek, all,

 Mirek M. píše v St 04. 12. 2013 v 10:03 +0100:

Yes, here are the decisions [1]:

  * Keep sidebar on the left for LTR locales, have it on the right for
  RTL locales.
  * Use thumbnails, but indicate file type using colors or badges. -- We
still need to design this, but if we don't do it in time, having no
color codes for this release is fine and we'll put them in the next
  one.
  * Use 2-line labels, with the name cut off in the middle, just like
  the labels in Gnome Documents.
  * Show the full file path (including extension) in a tooltip.

  * Button labels: Create Writer Text Document (or simply Writer
Document, if Writer Text Document is too long in some languages --
your call), Calc Spreadsheet, Impress Presentation, Draw Drawing, Math
  Formula, Base Database

  * Greeting: Welcome to LibreOffice. Use the sidebar to open or create
  a file.

So I have implemented most of these, I think I've left out only the 2
lines description - it is more complex unfortunately :-( I also fixed a
couple of things that were annoying me personally. The results are
 here:

Empty start center, with no documents:

 http://artax.karlin.mff.cuni.cz/~kendy/design-list/startcenter-empty.png

 Some recent documents present:

 http://artax.karlin.mff.cuni.cz/~kendy/design-list/startcenter-recent.png

You can see some differences to the design, most notably:

 - Create
When playing with that, it started to annoy me that it is _above_ the
separator line, and that it has smaller font size. Also, it logically
belongs to the group of the buttons, so I moved it there, gave it the
same size as the button text, and added a colon. I believe it works
   pretty well ;-)

 - Thumbnails
I considerably increased their size, and improved their drawing
algorithm to antialias the pictures. Also for the files that have no
thumbnail, I made it look like the icon is on a piece of paper; looks
much more consistently when there are more documents open.

 - Open File
I changed the pure 'Open' to 'Open File' - I think it goes better with
the explanatory Writer Document / Calc Spreadsheet etc.

 - Various pixel here, pixel there tweaks
To get more breathing space etc. - hopefully you are happy with the
result, it would be just too painful for everybody to ping-pong every
   change there :-)

 - Mouse over
Now we have a mouse over effect when you point at the thumbnails.

Finally - there are still things to fix around accessibility, haven't
changed a bit there; but that shouldn't be affected by the UI freeze, I
still plan to have a look.

Please shout if anything is wrong - but I hope the current state is
acceptable for most :-) Everyone, please play with the nightly build
that is built after now report bugs.

 All the best,
 Kendy

Re: [libreoffice-design] Controversial topics for the start center

2013-11-26 Thread Mateusz Zasuwik
2013/11/25 Laurent Lyaudet laurent.lyau...@gmail.com

 Hi,

We just added a section Open Problems to the wiki for the start center:
 https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Design/Whiteboards/Start_Center
So far we have 3 topics discussed:
 - Sidebar positioning
 - Icons or thumbnails
 - Tabs with file type pickers

Please add to the wiki all pros and cons you can think about for these
 topics.
We'll try to have definitive resolutions next week at the IRC chat.

Why I get impression that this Start Center is one step ahead and two steps
back?

In my opinion:
+ there should be Open and Templates icons. Without them, options are
invisible (dead zone for eyes)
+ there should be Location address bar.
+ every thumbnail should has gray background only if mouse cursor is over
document
+ user should can manage single document and whole list as well.
+ tabs are really nice feature if user works with many documents

And last but not least. I remove new prefix because other language than
English are not so simple and this short word will looks obscure e.g. in
Polish.

Did anyone try add Open and Templates icons to StartCenter? Plus, there

Hey

Sorry, but he refused and pointed out that welcome sign is in lower left
corner. I know that is not what you exactly expected, but it's only thing
we have. Maybe he just doesn't have an idea for appropriate performance
your concept? I will try to persuade him to take part in others tasks.

2013-10-15 Thread Mateusz Zasuwik

Again - thanks for the mockup, I like it. The only missing piece (and
that was what I was searching for in the first place) was what to show
in case there are no recent documents in the left part of your mockup -
can you please provide such a mockup too?

I asked him for new concept but now he is away so please be patient.

So what about with the easiest solution?

2013-10-14 Thread Mateusz Zasuwik
Hey

Guys, are you serious? Currently Start Center for LO 4.2 is horrible! Is
here any guy from UX Team? My friend is professional designer and when I
showed him new LibreOffice, he ask what is purpose of these small icons?

Please reject this awful interface and do something more attractive and
intuitive!

I asked him for better mockup and he did this.

Relax, take it easy. The screenshot is OBVIOUSLY not the final look.
Thanks for your mock-up, though: I like it :-)

Not so obvious for me. Actually I don't understand why the first version of
new Start Center is so unintuitive and ugly . There should be some
guidelines for developer programming interface.

If first alpha is coming with the beginning of month, will developers make
with it?

[libreoffice-design] Porting Symphony's graphic elements to LO?

2013-02-20 Thread Mateusz Zasuwik
Hey guys!

What are you thinking about porting gradients (or even more graphic
elements like gallery or color palette) from Symphony to LibreOffice?
Symphony has pretty ones and all bitmaps has been moved to AOO 4 yet. Look
at this gradients: http://people.apache.org/~alg/Gradients/gradients.png

It shouldn't be licensing problem because TDF made similar movement with
code in the past.

I have a sensation that Symphony is visually much prettier than LO in
general so I think It would be best If foundation could replace old by
new such as it's in AOO 4 now. Of course others mustn't agree with me so
another idea is just add new elements and leave both of them.

There is discussion about mixing AOO and Symphony color palette.
http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/openoffice-dev/201212.mbox/%3C50D2EC5B.2040507%40me.com%3E

What is yours opinion?

No, we currently don't include any Symphony code (except for maybe some
bug fixes that are already in Aoo's trunk). The licensing situation around
the Symphony code itself is still somewhat sketchy – so I don't think we
 can do that yet. (IANAL)
If you have further questions, you might want to refer to Michael (CC'd).

OK, but as I mention these features are also in AOO 4 so it must be
licensing under Apache License and can be copied such as others things,
right?
