- I did read the information there. But I read it differently. There are
two sets of logos, one set has W3C as part of the logo and a set that
does not have W3C as part of the graphic.
First it states that if you are using for non-profit and the logo does
not include W3C then you can just use it, if:
1 - keep enough white space so that it does not appear to be part of
another image.
2 - You do not alter the proportions of the image, although you may
resize it as needed.
Then the section you cite, which starts by referencing for profit
commercial use and this does require permission, without regard to which
logo (w/W3C or not) one uses. After that it then goes in product
package, I took that to be a continuation of the commercial for-profit
use case.
But - I suppose an email to w3t...@w3.org wouldn't hurt.

The W3C Document license requires attribtution and
linking to their wabsite. Will this be done on the inside
of the cover?
That was the plan, to do this on the insert. Same with the ODF logo. The
PDF graphic ( which is graphically a bit weak IMO ) is from
OpenCliprArt.org, but still it deserves a node to the author I think.
I think this license is too restrictive (this might be the
reason why the logos are not very present in public).
Should we approach W3C with the question of including
a phrase in their license that allows the use of their logo
(without W3C part) just as a reference for the file format?

Actually now that I think about this more - we are likely going to have
to do this.
One of the issues that we need to discuss at next weeks meeting is the
use of LuLu to publish the disc. Tim looked into this initially (I
didn't know they published DVDs) and then I looked also - it really
makes good sense in my opinion on a number of levels.
- discs and packaging are created on-demand
- when the disc is updated by us, it's just a matter of pushing a new
image and artwork to LuLu and the next buyer gets the update.
- for shows and other free distributions we would get a good discount on
quantity purchases at vendor rates.
One thing that I have not discussed with the team yet is the possibility
of asking the ODFAuthors to publish on our behalf.
- they already have a relationship with LuLu and understand the
processes there
- they already support separate accounting streams (OO.o v LibO for
instance)
- Jean has details on obtaining an ISBN and this is huge in my mind, as
this is required to get the disc into USA public library systems.
However - Jean is on vacation right now, so I haven't bothered her with
this subject yet, and as for the team, they just heard my idea on this
aspect for the first time: Hi Guys:-)
so - guess someone really does need to get that email off to the W3C,
assuming we want to have that logo on the package that is.
