You don't need to open the Zoom dialogue, instead you can right-click
on the percentage in the status bar to get a menu where can select any
of these options. You can also double-click the percentage to get to
the dialogue instead.
Obviously, you didn't see that and neither did I (I think I was at
some point explicitly pointed there). So, despite the functionality
being there, we do have a problem. Are you interested in turning the
problem into a spec?

If you can use a pointing device, using the status bar is sufficient, 
but the status bar cannot be reached via the keyboard (as far as I 
know), so keyboard users always need to go through the menus.
