[Bug 37448] Stopped recognising MIME types by file content

2006-03-31 Thread Martijn van de Streek
Public bug reported:

Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
In warty (and possibly hoary), when I had a file without an extension,
nautilus would look inside the file to determine its MIME type, and
launch the appropriate application to view it when doubleclicked.

In breezy, this is not the case anymore. If I have (for example) a PDF
or PostScript file without an extension, its type doesn't seem to get
detected. The file HAS to have the proper file extension (.pdf or .ps)

2006-03-31 Thread Fix

didn't register evince as app to view it.

[Bug 36539] Re: The eject button on the CD-Drive does not work for data CDs

2006-03-31 Thread Martijn van de Streek
It's most likely a hardware bug: the 'Eject' button on most CD-ROM players
doesn't send the proper signal.

On drives where it does, the disc gets unmounted and ejected properly, afaik.

Ben, you already opened bug #17970 about that, not need to open a second. The
situation is still the same, generating a cache for hicolor would break all the
applications installing an icon to icon if they don't touch
/usr/share/icons/hicolor, the lookup needs to be made robust before beeing used

[Bug 34859] Re: gdm does not restart after Ctrl+Alt+Backspace

2006-03-31 Thread Marius Gedminas
This just happened again: gdm exitted but did not restart after I pressed
Ctrl+Alt+Backspace.

There was nothing in /var/log/messages and syslog (except for a translated
message saying that gconfd exitted because it wasn't used).

Two gdm processes were still running (parent and child). I tried strace on
both, briefly -- the child was trying to read from a pipe (fd 7), while the
parent was blocked in poll().

/etc/init.d/gdm restart fixed things.

[Bug 34446] Re: Suggestion: ship breezy human theme

2006-03-31 Thread Pavel Roitberg
I dont think that another theme should be shipped - choice is great, but the
the main aspect of default is that you cant choose.

And if you think of a user which is able to go to the preferences and switch
back to classic, you can also say that he will be able to do the last step of
going to art.gnome.org or something to get the theme he likes.

so putting ubuntu-classic there or in the repositories should be enough IMO.

[Bug 20096] Synaptic Dialogs do not wrap text labels dynamically when windows are resized

2006-03-31 Thread Jonathon Conte
Public bug reported:

Affects: gtk+2.0 (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: Medium
 Status: Confirmed

Description:
I'm using Breezy Colony 3 and have the Application Font set to Bitstream Vera
San (Roman) size 16. Using this large font forces Synaptic dialog windows to be
larger. The problem is that the text labels within those windows do not expand
to fill the width of the windows. This makes the text look unusual when it is
wrapping at half the width of the window. This occurs in at least the following
Synaptic dialogs and perhaps others:
-Mark additional required changes
-Summary
-Applying Changes
-Changes Applied

When the text displayed is longer than the width of the dialog window, it should
wrap at the end of the window instead of at some arbitrary point in the middle
of the window.

[Bug 27919] Re: Switching workspace: redraw is slow

2006-03-31 Thread Chris Wagner
Christoffer, do you know if you were using the nv driver when you had this
issue? Are you using it now? If you are not and never were using the nv
driver, then perhaps these are separate issues (because mine seems very likely
to be related to nv).

I suppose you should post your xorg.conf. You wouldn't happen to have the
xorg.conf which you were using at the time of the problem, do you? Perhaps, we
could compare them to see if the configuration actually solved the problem.

[Bug 37489] newly added user doesn't see default theme

2006-03-31 Thread Eric Feliksik
Public bug reported:

Affects: ubuntu-artwork (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
If I add a user either with `adduser' or the gnome tool, and I log in
with switch user, the old grayish ubuntu icons are used. The orange
selection-thing and orange window-headers are used.

If we go for the orange icons by default, they should appear for newly
added users, too.

- I'm using current Dapper
- I did make sure that the newly created user-dir didn't already exist

[Bug 34402] Re: Request: miscellaneous icons

2006-03-31 Thread Daniel Holbach
Thanks for your suggestion, but the amount of existing icons is high enough
already. http://daniel.holba.ch/ubuntu/ic/ might give you an idea. Most of them
already reside in /usr/share/icons - shipping even more icons would bring us
into even bigger trouble regarding the CD size constraints.

[Bug 37494] Orange is nice, but icons are alarmingly BRIGHT

2006-03-31 Thread Eric Feliksik
Public bug reported:

Affects: ubuntu-artwork (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
The orange theme is happy, and has really improved in the last weeks.
Nice.

The icons, however, are just *screaming* at me. They feel like hurry-up
traffic-lights! Especially the ones with a special label, like your
homefolder, an ssh-share, etcetera. The orange tone is just very hard.
This also goes for progress-bars, which should be informing, not
alarming.

The selection tone, on the other hand, is subtle (and is allowed to draw
more attention). The metacity-top is not distracting, nice.

This is also mentioned in other bugs (although that's not what they're mainly
about):
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-artwork/+bug/34796
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-artwork/+bug/34400/

I suggest making the orange a bit gentler, especially the bottom part of
the folder icons. For example, make it more like the savedSearch icon in
the screenshot below.

Also, the label for ssh-shares and ftp-shares doesn't match the label
for ogg-stuff etcetera. It could be just as well a label in another
color, to make the icons match the others, and still *subtly* stand out.

** Attachment added: this explains it pretty well

[Bug 37487] sound events broken

2006-03-31 Thread Amnon A
Public bug reported:

Affects: control-center (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Confirmed

Description:
Something is wrong with the Sound Preferences dialog window. I don't
know if it's caused by a single bug.

(1)The names of the sounds in the system sounds section don't match
the sounds. For example, the Beep and the Clink both sound the same, the
Siren doesn't sound like a siren, etc.

(2) the settings in this dialog window are ignored. For example, the log
in sound is set to no sound but the default sound is still played
every on log in.

Also, when I choose System-Preferences-Sound, a window with a
warning title appears briefly before the Sound Preferences window
appears.

I'm using dapper.
