[Bug 38198] Re: Garbled using open source Radeon driver

2006-05-24 Thread Emmanuel Touzery
well it's been established that it only happens to ati users for sure. i
mean, many people already commented on that, and they all use ATI cards.

so either it's a ATI driver bug or ubuntulooks bug that only appears
with the ATI driver.

it's still strange though, that it only happens with ubuntulooks. not a
single problem with any other GTK nor QT theme.

[Bug 46077] Re: Swap Logout and Lock Screen to keep least intrusive on LHS.

2006-05-24 Thread Vassilis Pandis
Quickly browsing through the HIG I could not find any relevant points. I
agree that the balance of colours is nice. Having two greens side-by-
side is not right. What could be done is to swap them, and change
maybe the colour of logout. But agreed, not for Dapper.

[Bug 46219] Re: Folder icons in 'Human' theme are huge

2006-05-24 Thread James Henstridge
This problem should be solvable by editing the
/usr/share/icons/Human/index.theme file. Currently it contains the
following:

[scalable/filesystems]
Size=48
Context=filesystems
Type=Scalable
MinSize=32
MaxSize=256

So the icon theme code thinks that icons in that directory have a
nominal size of 48 pixels. Since they are actually 128x128, they appear
about 2.5 times larger than other icons.

There are two possible fixes:
1. edit index.theme and set the nominal size of icons in scalable/filesystems
to 128 pixels.
2. edit the SVG files so that they are 48x48 pixels.

I've tried (1) locally and it fixes the problem for the folder icons. I
haven't checked the scalable icons in the other directories, so it is
possible that some of the other sections in index.theme to make sure
that they match.

2006-05-24 Thread James Henstridge
Looks like the change is needed for the [scalable/devices] section too.
The other directories under scalable/ don't contain any icons so don't
really matter right now, but it might be worth changing them to Size=128
too if you are going to use 128x128 for all new scalable icons.

[Bug 46288] Empty CD-ROM is automounted as a blank disk

2006-05-24 Thread Alissa Harrison
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I can see a link to a CD disc on the desktop even though there is no CD
in the CD-ROM. If I double-click it, the CD Creator pops up. If I right-
click it and eject...the CD-ROM opens and the link disappers. But when I
close the drive (WITHOUT inserting a disc), the link comes back just the
same.

It seems that this problem is not always reproducible. I notice that
sometimes the CD-ROM is empty and there is no link. After a few days of
normal use (reading and burning CDs) I might notice the buggy behavior
returns. But I am not sure if there is a particular CD or sequence of
actions that cause it. My cd-rom operates normally in all other
respects: burning CDs, auto-mounting ACTUAL CDs, readingetc.

An important caveat: rebooting does NOT help. In fact, I notice that
while this problem is active, I will see several CD-ROM related error
msgs in the boot up output. See attachments for more info.

Thanks for the analysis James. Can you tell me, if we tell the
index.theme that our scalable ones are at 128x128, will it still use the
SVG's if it needs to say produce a 49x49 icon? There must be some
threshold at which it is better to scale the SVG *down* than to scale
the 48x48 PNG image *up*. How do we tell the icon system what that
threshold is?

[Bug 46219] Re: Folder icons in 'Human' theme are huge

2006-05-24 Thread James Henstridge
Mark: yes. The icon theming code uses the nominal size to work out a
scaling factor for the icon.

So with the existing Size=48 setting, it would use a scaling factor of
49/48 (102%), so render the icon at 130px.

With Size=128, it would instead use a scaling factor of 49/128 (38%) and
render the icon at 49px.

The range of icon sizes at which the SVG icon is used is covered by a
different set of keys in the index.theme: MinSize and MaxSize. So in
the case of the Human theme, the SVG folder icon will be used for any
sizes from 32px to 256px that are not covered by a bitmap icon.

[Bug 46306] (Dapper) Gnome-screensaver doesn't start, although the option is ticked off.

2006-05-24 Thread VincentRC
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

Hi everybody,

Since the updates of 2006/05/23, gnome-screensaver doesn't start, although the
option is ticked off (activated).
I went out a few moments (enough in comparision to what I had set), and it
wasn't running.
So I tested it. I stopped any software like a video player which could stop the
screensaver and setted it to start after 1 minute stopped touching the mouse or
keyboard... It didn't launch.

Edit : I have just remarqued that the lock-screen fonctionality doesn't work
anymore too (it was working before for me).
There is a problem with screensaver since the 2006/05/23.

[Bug 46335] Rendering of small fonts works badly on gnome terminal

2006-05-24 Thread Juho Vuori
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

What exactly happens is a bit difficult to explain, but basically under
some conditions and when using small fonts, some pixels of the fonts get
lost when using gnome terminal. I'll give an example of a way to
reproduce the problem.

1. Start gnome terminal with typical settings, 80x24 window etc.
2. Edit Current Profile
3. Select DejaVu Sans Mono font, size 8
4. In bash prompt, type 'M'. Notice how the M's don't look
quite how they should.
5. Press backspace, and suddenly all the M's are ok again, although very close
to each other.

Something similar happens every now and then in different situations.

[Bug 45627] Confirm

2006-05-24 Thread Jean Pierre Rupp
I also confirm this. I have every partition of the system showing up on
Computer, but not on the places menu or the desktop. I have an entry for
the root volume, another for filesystem, although they point to the same
place. I also have a /home entry that points to my /home partition, and
a Windows XP entry that points to the NTFS Windows partition (Windows XP
is the label for that partition). There are also the usual CD-RW/DVD±R
and Floppy icons. The NTFS partition shows up on the desktop and places
menu too, but the other partitions don't.

[Bug 46339] Nautilus hangs when open, consumes to much memory

2006-05-24 Thread Gonçalo Nuno Alegria
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I'm not sure what is causing this, and it started only 3 days ago.

Setps: Click open with nautilus any folder and it will steadly consume
memory til it hangs the responsiveness of the entire system; mouse
movement, screen drwaing, switching to tty(?) takes forever.

In order to get things back to normal I have to either kill X, kill GDM,
or be fast enough and killall nautilus and then click the close cross in
the upper left corner of the offending window.

The weird thing is that Thunar is also behaving this way, but it is
easier to kill than nautilus (I'm suspecting the name nautilus does not
come from the shell creature but from the weigh of Captain Nemo's ship
hull)

Oh, and this weird buttons appear in the left pane information view:
...with F-Spot Photo Manager
.th Thunar

The condition of my system:
This is a less than a week Beta install and updated constantly. This bug ocurrs
in both 2.6.15.22 and .23
I have a 256Mb Ram, 700Mb Swap, 36Gb Hd, Pentium 4 2,4Ghz. It's a 3 year old
office computer so it should run Nautilus and/or Thunar ok, so if it doesn't I
must have done something wrong, but what? And how do I trace it?

Sorry for the long vague post, I tried the forums but nothing came of
it.

Gonçalo

[Bug 46345] Home folder icon not properly resized in nautilus info pane

2006-05-24 Thread Gabriel Patiño
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-artwork

After yesterday's update of ubuntu-artwork, the icon for the home folder
showed at the info panel in nautilus does not scale properly, when using
'Human' default theme.

It seems to be a theme issue, since when using other themes this doesn't
occurs.

Maybe there some intermediate size icon missing in the last update.

[Bug 43114] Re: GDM Choices Cause Sleep and Hibernate Failure

2006-05-24 Thread Paul Sladen
SonWon: can you include the output of:

  cat /proc/swaps

and does hibernate work for you if you do:

  sudo pmi action hibernate

from a Terminal. Does the same command succeed any better if you do if
from a terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F1).

[Bug 46381] Default window placement/positioning

2006-05-24 Thread loftx
Public bug reported:

Since the smart-window placement/positioning was introduced, any windows
where the placement isn't set by the application are put in a large
enough empty space. If there is no space large enough for the window,
windows are positioned in the top-left corner and stacked diagonally so
title bars are visisble on multiple windows.

I have a large screen, and would like the option for windows satisfying
these conditions to be placed in the centre of the screen as I find
myself continually dragging the windows back to the centre.

Example:
Open firefox (or a similar application which takes up most of the screen) - It
is opened in the location stored by firefox.
Open another firefox window - It is opened in the top-left of the screen
forcing the user to drag it back to their preferred position where the first
window opened.

[Bug 38066] Re: No possibility to save file over gnome-vfs ftp connection

2006-05-24 Thread Loe Spee
To Tomas Gustavsson,

Well i somewhere heard, there is a little issue with making it enabled by
default.
What it does is save the file temporarily and then upload that temporary file
to the FTP server. Somehow there seemes to be a difference possible between
write permission and delete and replace permission (I don't know exactly what
the problem was, but something in this direction). Therefor it can be possible
that you may overwrite files but not delete one and replace it with a newly
created file.

Correct me if I am wrong, and I will try to find the source of this
statement, I'm not sure if I heard it on an IRC channel or read it
somewhere.

[Bug 46386] Crash upon Create Archive

2006-05-24 Thread iam8up
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

This may very well be due to the bad hard drive, though it happens every
single time so I don't have another method of trying this.

I'm using the Ubuntu Live CD. I mount an NTFS partition that is 80GB
into /stuff

I use Nautilus to view the /stuff mountpoint and highlight all of the
directories and files (excluding a few of the neccessary Windows files:
boot.ini, ntldr ntdetect.com and pagefile.sys) and right click on any
one of the folders or files, then click Create Archive. In a second or
two each Nautilus window will disappear and a warning stating that it
crashed comes up.

I've done this several times all which result in the same manner.
