[Bug 30659] Re: should detect ekiga (voip) activity as activity and not lock screen

2006-06-17 Thread Tollef Fog Heen
I disagree about handling voice+video different from voice-only calls.
I'm in both cases using the computer and I think this is similar enough
to the case of watching a movie (which inhibits the screensaver from
starting). Note that I might not be jotting down stuff all the time and
I have a very short lock timeout (1 minute) which combined with a long
password means unlocking the screen actually is a significant time cost
in the middle of a conversation. You could obviously say that those are
silly settings, but to me as a user, I'm using the computer when sitting
in front of it and talking.

About the wandering around the room for ten minutes; I have a cord about
1.5m long so it'd be a very small walk in my case.

Screen burn is mostly a problem for CRTs and then you are talking about much,
much, much more time than what you'd get from sitting in a phone call. And if
you're worried about that, you can always just switch on the screensaver
yourself.
Same goes for laptop power consumption. (Actually, I think dimming the screen
would be fine, but not turning it off or locking it.)

[Bug 50079] CD Burner needs file based temporary directory

2006-06-17 Thread Neil Wilson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus-cd-burner

By default CD Burner uses the system temporary directory to store the
image it is creating to burn onto disc. This is normally /tmp which is a
tmpfs filesystem and has a tendency to fill up when you are burning
large DVDs. On smaller systems the swap space is unlikely to be big
enough to accommodate a DVD image.

I would suggest setting 'temp_iso_dir' to /var/tmp by default.

The current workaround is to use 'gconf-editor' and alter the variable
by hand.

NeilW

[Bug 34112] Re: gnome programs don't respect ~/.cups/lpoptions

2006-06-17 Thread Pascal De Vuyst
@Junglebz

I believe the patch fixes printing for libgnomeprint based applications as far
as it can be fixed, many people have confirmed it.
Perhaps you have a different issue that is only related to your printer model.
You are not being very specific, please help us first by providing more
information.
What printer model do you have? What application(s) did you try to print from?
The patch normally solves several issues, can you give examples of issues you
still have (e.g. printer quality set in gnome-cups-manager not respected).

Changes through alacarte override the defaults, even after they are

Also, this should be fixed since June, 14th, as I fixed this bug in
Rosetta 1 or 2 days after the Ubuntu 6.06 release, and there was a
language pack update on the 14th. Otherwise something went wrong with
the langpack updates or with Rosetta. Please also remember that you

[Bug 50104] Tab overflow in tab bar

Public bug reported:

I have epiphany-browser from dapper-updates, and when I open new tabs it
overflows in the tab bar. Previously, arrow heads appear when the
number of tabs exceed the size of the tab bar.

This happens whether I use the keyboard shortcut (C-T) or the item in

[Bug 50116] not negotiated error after playing first file

2006-06-17 Thread Patrick Fey
Public bug reported:

Banshee plays the first music file in the library just fine. When it tries to
play the next file in the playlist, banshee shows a not negotiated error
message in a popup window.
Rhythmbox plays the first file just fine and when it can't play the second
file, it tries to play the third file and so on. Only the first file plays
successfully. No error message is displayed at all.
When launching a nautilus window with music files and opening one by
double-click in totem, the file plays fine. If you keep the totem window open
and double-click a second file in nautilus, totem shows a not negotiated
error message in a popup window.
If you don't open the second file by double-click in nautilus, but via the film
menu, totem seems to open the file, but it plays the first file again.

This happens regardless of the file type (i.e. it happens with both mp3
and ogg files). The error occurs since I upgraded from breezy to dapper
some days ago. I do not see this with totem-xine.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open any media application with a gstreamer backend (totem, banshee,
rhythmbox)
2. Play one file
3. Try to play another file or try to skip to the next file

[Bug 50112] Re: nautilus preference

2006-06-17 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thanks for your bug. How is that a gconf-editor issue? What version of
Ubuntu do you use? gconf-editor is only supposed to change the gconf key
value. Does a gconftool-2 -g
/apps/nautilus/preferences/side_pane_background_set lists the right
value?

2006-06-17 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thanks for your bug. What version of Ubuntu do you use. Please don't
copy strace logs to comment they are usually useless and doesn't make
easy to browse the page or read the bug. Do you have a /usr/lib
/mozilla-firefox/components/compreg.dat? If you have it, does moving it
away fixes the issue? That might be a duplicate of bug #30791

[Bug 48377] Re: Dapper Sound System broken by plugging in a Webcam

2006-06-17 Thread Victor Luchits
I can confirm this bug. Computers with more than one sound card (in my
case ESI Juli@ and SAA1734) get random sound device list order. This is
extremely annoying. I had to come up with this to make sound on my tv-
tuner to work:

sox -r 32000 -w -t ossdsp /dev/dsp`arecord -l | grep '^card [0-9]:
SAA7134' | awk '$2 == 2: {print 2}'` -t ossdsp /dev/dsp`aplay -l |
grep '^card [0-9]: Juli \[ESI [EMAIL PROTECTED], device 0:' | awk '$2 == 2:
{print 2}'`

because sound devices interchange between /dev/dsp and /dev/dsp2
randomly at reboot. Also, it affects the 'Default sound card' setting in
sound preferences.

[Bug 48377] Re: Dapper Sound System broken by plugging in a Webcam

2006-06-17 Thread Daniel T Chen
(Dropping Importance. Sorry, but a usability bug, while extremely
annoying, does not constitute an Importance of the extremity of a system
crash.)

If System Preferences Sound Default sound card's drop-down menu is
not working properly, that's a bug in the gnome-control-center source
package.

alsa-utils in Dapper includes the asoundconf(1) utility that gnome-
control-center's Sound applet invokes to perform the background task. If
you find using asoundconf(1) [see the set-default-card convenience
macro] remains utterly ineffectual, then you can forcibly set one driver
to /not/ be the default (i.e., not grab index 0).

Let's take the example of my computer, which uses the snd_intel8x0 and
snd_usb_audio drivers. (While asoundconf(1) works for me, for the
purposes of this illustration I'll pretend it doesn't work.) Let's say
that I really want my onboard sound chipset to be the secondary instead
of the primary, since my M-Audio Transit USB is a much
better/preferable device. In this case I would issue the following
command:

$ echo options snd_intel8x0 index=-2 |sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d
/alsa-base

The above command effectively forces the snd_intel8x0 driver to not grab
the first available index in the presence of other drivers.

So -- what info is needed for you guys? Please /attach/ (don't comment
inline) the output from ``lspci -v cat /proc/asound/cards''. Also
indicate which of the cards you wish to use as the primary one and
whether asoundconf(1) [with the convenience macro mentioned above] works
when you invoke it by hand and restart ALSA apps (this does not affect
OSS emulation).

If you are responding to global hotkeys you can't suddently switch to

[Bug 50147] gconf error after latest dapper updates

2006-06-17 Thread Nick
Public bug reported:

I installed the latest dapper updates today which has caused multiple
problems:

'theme' I get this message:

'The default theme schemas could not be found on your system. This means
that you probably don't have metacity installed, or that your gconf is
configured incorrectly.'

I haven't changed gconf, and all was well prior to updates.

2. The mouse moves about an inch on screen for every foot on the desk!

Going to mouse and changing sliders make no difference.

3.Synaptic or anything that requires a password won't work. I get:

'Failed to run /usr/sbin/synaptic as user root:

The password is correct.

4. The terminal now looks really lousy. Gone are the menus to configure
it.

5. alttab switching no longer works.
