[Bug 58165] Re: security policy error with hald after latest updates
Confirmed on latest edgy dist-upgrade, with kubuntu-desktop and ubuntu- desktop installed. In addition, knetworkmanager refuses to interface with its backend for the same reason. Strangely, I have another edgy, pure kubuntu box that does not exhibit this behavior. Nonetheless, I think this confirms this problem... [Bug 6290] Re: use /dev/video1394, not /dev/raw1394
I have developed a simple patch for raw1394 that I am just beginning to test that addresses the raw1394 security issue in a way completely different than Jody's proposal. One drawback to using many different device files is the impact of that change on the libraries and applications that will take a long time to sort out and educate. Also, it does not address that certain address space of CSR are well-defined for specified applications and are safe to read/write. My approach is to use Linux Capabilities to sandbox raw1394 operations. Things such as isochronous communications and asynchronous transactions against the well-defined address ranges (ConfigROM, IEC 61883-1 FCP and plug registers, IIDC) would be left as is and allow existing applications to work fine. Other operations would require CAP_SYS_RAWIO except some things like ARM and ConfigROM manipulation could be CAP_SYS_ADMIN. What do you think? How does that deal with Stefan's issue #4? If it is not adequate, then nothing is because a protocol library in kernel space would just use the same addresses, just by proxy. -- use /dev/video1394, not /dev/raw1394 https://launchpad.net/bugs/6290 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 6290] Re: use /dev/video1394, not /dev/raw1394
A note on /dev/raw1394's security implications: 1. You cannot access local memory through raw1394, except for ROMs and CSRs that are exposed to other nodes any way. 2. It is extremely hard to manipulate data on attached SBP-2 devices (FireWire storage devices). 3. You can disturb operation of the FireWire bus, e.g. creating a DoS situation for audio/video applications, for SBP-2 devices, or eth1394 network interfaces. 4. If another PC is attached to the FireWire bus, it may be possible to read or overwrite the entire RAM of that remote PC. This depends on the PC's configuration. Most FireWire controllers support this feature (yes, it's not a bug, or at least wasn't intended to be one...) but not all OSs enable the feature. This feature is called physical DMA and is enabled by Linux' ohci1394 driver per default. It speeds up SBP-2. Linux' sbp2 driver does not work correctly without physical DMA at the moment. Some slides: http://md.hudora.de/presentations/#firewire-pacsec http://md.hudora.de/presentations/#firewire-21c3 Jody McIntyre's plans to improve raw1394's security: http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel.firewire.devel/6395/focus=6395 Neither Jody nor anybody else got around to implement these ideas yet. I hope to get sbp2 to work correctly (if slowly) without physical DMA too. Furthermore I am thinking about implementing filtered physical DMA for SBP-2. -- use /dev/video1394, not /dev/raw1394 https://launchpad.net/bugs/6290 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 58598] (PATCH INCLUDED) Seeking bar jumps to zero when dragging or scrolling
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: totem When playing rmvb files in totem-xine, if I scroll the mouse, the seeking bar jumps to zero and then jumps to the correct place. If I scroll the mouse quickly, it may jump to the start. Steps to reproduct: 1. Install totem-xine (apt-get install totem-xine) and some codecs. 2. Open an rmvb movie. 3. Drag the seeking bar to a place. 4. Watch the seeking bar carefully when doing step 3. It firstly jump to zero and then jump to the correct place. 5. Scroll the mouse quickly. [Bug 58595] Rotation when importing photos from camera
Public bug reported: When I try to transfer the pictures from my digital camera (Canon S80), gthumb rotates the vertical ones without changing the EXIF information. This generates two problems: -Probably a loss of quality in the pictures due to recompression (JPEG). -The programs that do understand and interpretate correctly the orientation parameter (gthumb doesn't) show the pictures with a double rotation. Step to reproduce: - Make a photo with the camera in vertical position. - Transfer to hard drive with gthumb software. - If you open it with gthumb it'll apparently display it correctly, if you use another program, like gwenview (kde) or faststone (win32), the picture will appear rotated. Suggested solution: - Don't modify the pictures when transferring them. - Use orientation parameter (EXIF) to diplay the pictures properly. ** Affects: gthumb (Ubuntu) Importance: Untriaged Status: Unconfirmed -- Rotation when importing photos from camera https://launchpad.net/bugs/58595 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 27951] Re: gst0.10 doesn't play DVD/message confusing for it
Comment from upstream: "Can't reproduce this with up-to-date totem (1.5.92) and gst-plugins-ugly (0.10.4). With dvdreadsrc installed, opening a DVD iso file works just fine (totem will pass a dvd:///path/to/foo.iso URI), without dvdreadsrc installed it will throw an error telling you about the missing dvd handler. gst-typefind-0.10 doesn't recognise the ISO file, but that's actually not a problem, since totem does and prefixes the dvd:// bit, so only dvdreadsrc needs to be able to handle this right. If this is still a problem with current totem/gst-plugins-ugly, could you run totem like this: $ GST_DEBUG=totem:5,dvdreadsrc:5 totem dvd:///path/to/file.iso 2>dbg.log ... wait for error ... press control+C $ gzip dbg.log and attach the dbg.log.gz file?" ** Changed in: totem (Ubuntu) Assignee: Sebastien Bacher => Ubuntu Desktop Bugs Status: Unconfirmed => Needs Info -- gst0.10 doesn't play DVD/message confusing for it https://launchpad.net/bugs/27951 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 58545] mp3 plugin causes very bad sound distortion
Public bug reported: When playing some mp3's that have deep electronic beats I would often get very strong distortion from my speakers or headset. The distortion would persist even at low volume levels and even when the PCM output volume was low. I discovered a recommendation at: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=1437919&postcount=10 It involved removing the gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mp3 package and making sure that the gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly package is installed. This worked perfectly for me and others and well. Now I have absolutely no distortion. I would recommend removing this package unless it is essential for playback of certain media types that cannot be handled by the ugly package. ** Affects: gstreamer0.10 (Ubuntu) Importance: Untriaged Status: Unconfirmed -- mp3 plugin causes very bad sound distortion https://launchpad.net/bugs/58545 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 52344] Re: Unable to apt-get 'gnome-core-devel'
Good day! Sorry for the long reply but I was on holidays! Here's the output: ### [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo apt-get install libeel2-dev Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that the package is simply not installable and a bug report against that package should be filed. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies. libeel2-dev: Depends: libgnomevfs2-dev (>= 2.9.1) but it is not going to be installed Depends: libgnomecanvas2-dev (>= 2.6.0) but it is not going to be installed Depends: libgnomeui-dev (>= 2.6.0) but it is not going to be installed Depends: libgail-dev (>= 1.4) but it is not going to be installed Depends: libgnome-menu-dev (>= 2.9.1) but it is not going to be installed Depends: libgnome-desktop-dev (>= 2.1.4) but it is not going to be installed E: Broken packages # -- Unable to apt-get 'gnome-core-devel' https://launchpad.net/bugs/52344 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
