[Bug 67688] Nautilus hangs Gnome on drag'n'drop and 'invalid parameters' error
Public bug reported: Using Nautilus, start up a set of file copy or cut/paste operations, one of which is going to cause an 'invalid parameters' error. Start dragging and dropping a file from Nautilus but keep holding the mouse button so it doesn't complete. When the 'invalid parameters' error occurs, the Gnome interface completely locks up - you can't press the 'skip' button on the error box, you can't alt-tab between applications. Programs still run but you have to ctrl-alt-backspace to reboot Gnome. I can reproduce this by creating an empty file called test: on an ext3 drive and trying to copy it along with a number of other files to a FAT32 partition. The other files are just to give me a chance to pick up some file before the error occurs. I can recreate this on both Dapper and the latest Edgy Nautilus. Note: even when you are not dragging and dropping so Gnome doesn't hang, this 'invalid parameters' error actually stops ALL Nautilus windows other than the invalid parameters message window from responding - this can be quite confusing if you have a number of windows open and can't see why they aren't responding. ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Nautilus hangs Gnome on drag'n'drop and 'invalid parameters' error https://launchpad.net/bugs/67688 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 67691] Nautilus can leave half-copied files on the target
Public bug reported: If a file move/copy fails half way through (eg due to volume full error), Nautilus advises there was an error but does not try to delete the half-copied file, leaving the impression to a user on the target file system that the file was successfully copied. ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Nautilus can leave half-copied files on the target https://launchpad.net/bugs/67691 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 67690] Copy/move aborts mid-stream with no error on case-insensitive targets
Public bug reported: This happens when the target file system does not accept the file being copied because it has the same name as another file when treated case- insensitively. On a drive that accepts case-sensitive names (eg ext3 but I also managed to get this happening on a FAT32 drive under Linux), try to move files such as atest aTest test to a case-insensitive target drive (eg I used a Windows XP FAT32 share). The move window simply disappears with no error when it gets to aTest1. It doesn't copy test to the target, and it doesn't remove atest from the source, even though it was successfully copied. ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Copy/move aborts mid-stream with no error on case-insensitive targets https://launchpad.net/bugs/67690 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 67692] If an error occurs while moving files across disk volumes, Nautilus leaves duplicate files on source and target
Public bug reported: If you try to move a number of files from one file system to another and an error occurs that causes Nautilus to abort the move (eg disk full), it leaves duplicate files on both source and target. Personally, I would prefer it if Nautilus treated the move as a number of individual file move operations (ie if it removed each source file once the file has been successfully copied to the target). But if Nautilus is treating the entire move as one operation it should probably (try to) delete target files on an error, so that you don't end up in an 'indeterminate state' with a partial duplication of the source on the target. (This is especially a problem if you are moving a lot of files into a directory already containing a lot of files as it's very difficult to ascertain which ones copied and which ones didn't.) ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- If an error occurs while moving files across disk volumes, Nautilus leaves duplicate files on source and target https://launchpad.net/bugs/67692 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 65552] Re: usb-drive is automaticly remounted during format stopping gparted
I can confirm the problem. You can workaround it by disabling auto-mounting of hot-plugged drives (via System / Preferences / Removable Drives and Media), then creating the file system, and then re-enabling auto-mounting. But it would obviously be much better if GParted did this automatically when creating the file system, particularly as the workaround is not at all obviously intuitive. -- usb-drive is automaticly remounted during format stopping gparted https://launchpad.net/bugs/65552 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 37777] Re: very uncomfortable browsing
I agree, this is indead very annoying and not consistent with the way for example Nautilus works. Even after working a considerably amount of time with gThumb, I cannot get used to this. Also, the mentioned bugreport http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=302704 has something to with a proposed workaround: display some (selected) thumbnails. [Bug 67718] Movies are not shown
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gthumb When a movie (*.avi or else) is in the selected folder, nothing is shown. For the user, it looks like it's not there. Opening the same folder with Nautilus, (off course) shows the movie file. I understand that avi-files are not handled with gThumb, probably because it's not on the white list of supported image types. I can live with that. But it's *very* inconvenient if you have to open Nautilus to view the movie, provided you *know* that the file resides there... My proposal: show the file, maybe with a thumbnail (but this is not necessary). Doubli click on the item opens the connected application (Totem for example). As a step further: why is it not possible to add comments to a unsupported file? When that *can* be done, I can even find my movies back with the search function within gThumb, that will be great! [Bug 67730] Usability bug - new login
Public bug reported: I just created an account for my son on my laptop, running Edubuntu 6.06. No problems there - it's a reasonably intuitive process. However, when I tried to find a new login screen for him to log in, I could not; I tried systemadministration and generally peered in all the menus when that didn't work. I've since been told that I should have tried SystemQuit which has a 'Switch User' option. This was not obvious at all; because I did not want to quit, I didn't try that. I've also since noticed that hovering over the quit option displays a tooltip reading Log off, switch user, lock screen or power down computer, but again, as I was quite sure I did not want to quit, I did not notice that earlier. In fact, the place where I should have tried was the one place I was certain I did not want! Part of the problem seems to be that Quit just isn't a great name for this. Out of six options I see on my laptop (log out, lock screen, switch user, suspend, restart, shut down), only three are unambiguously quit-type options (log out, restart, shut down), lock screen and suspend are on the edge, and switch user is explicitly not quitting, only letting somebody else use the machine for a while. Running sudo /usr/sbin/gdm gave me the normal, edgy gdm screen. -- Cannot run gdmsetup https://launchpad.net/bugs/66034 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 47329] Re: Can't use the To button in Compose Message to look up contacts
eds is evolution-data-server, you can run /usr/lib/evolution/evolution- data-server-1.8 from a command line (run evolution --force-shutdown first) -- Can't use the To button in Compose Message to look up contacts https://launchpad.net/bugs/47329 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 66034] Re: Cannot run gdmsetup
My mistake, I'd mystyped s21gdm instead of S21gdm. It now works (though it seems like it takes more to open gdm, probably because it does). Maybe some other initscript can be moved after it? I attach my (modified) setup for /etc/rc2.d as a text file. ** Attachment added: modified setup for rc2.d runlevel dir http://librarian.launchpad.net/4928794/rc2.d.txt -- Cannot run gdmsetup https://launchpad.net/bugs/66034 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
