[Bug 30488] Re: GDM Display refuses to initialize with ATi Card
xforcevesa bypasses Radeon 9600 problem. The bug exists in Dapper and Edgy. Just helped on a similar problem: 0) On a computer with ATI Radeon 9600 (and AMD64 processor) 1) Boot with Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper AMD64 version Live CD Boot starts normally, and splash screen is shown. When GDM should start: What should happen: - GDM should start normally What actually happens (the bug): - A blank black screen appears. Computer is not completely crashed: numlock changes light. Bypass: - Safe graphical mode works perfectly. Optimal resolution for the display is automatically detected: 1280x1024 @ hor: 63,92 kHz, vert: 59,9 Hz. Looking at /isolinux/isolinux.cfg on cdrom reveals that the correct boot parameter is xforcevesa. - xforcevesa makes display work when it is added to boot parameters with F6 other options. This same parameter could be added to grub boot parameters on an installed system. On the same AMD64, ATI Radeon 9600 system, Ubuntu Linux 6.10 Edgy x86 alternate install cd had the same problem: blank screen when GDM starts. Also latest Knoppix failed to start X. [Bug 78208] Session should be saved on logout
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-session When I logout or shutdown Edgy the current session isnt saved by default. This is IMHO wrong because apps like gaim depend on the session manager instead of an autostart like in windows. So the current session should be saved on logout. This doesnt have negative side-effects because most users close their apps before quitting. The way it is now its difficult for users who dont know anything about session management to get apps like gaim to autostart. ** Affects: gnome-session (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Session should be saved on logout https://launchpad.net/bugs/78208 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 78210] Asking user whether to save the session doesnt work
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-session Theres an option to ask the user whether he wants to save the current session on logout. Even if its selected theres no such option. Since most users dont know nothing about session management I suggest to turn it on by default, since (as I wrote in another bug reports) there are many apps which depend on it. IMHO session management is the way to go, not the way e.g. the networkmanager applet goes with the autostart list. Its nice that the user just starts programs, and if they run on logout they run on login again. No need to worry about autostart and such things. ** Affects: gnome-session (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Asking user whether to save the session doesnt work https://launchpad.net/bugs/78210 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: totem This problem occurred when I played a dvd, self made dvd-r with 4 hours of video. I tried to skip a piece by dragging the slider to the right. Then totem begins to seek to that point (I can hear my dvd-player working harder). Now the following things can happen: - if I forwarded a small piece, it works fine (about 1 min) (probably loaded in the buffer already?) - if I forwarded a longer piece, this is my observation: - totem is busy seeking, but when I dare to touch the slider again, totem crashes. When I am patient the image of the scene shows up, but it doesn't play further. - but when I drag back to the beginning (same part in which worked fine first) it works fine again - when I drag a longer piece to the right after I dragged to the beginning again, totem crashes immediately - when I start playing with the slide-bar, totem always crashes :P The first 2 times I got bug-reports. After that I tried to install some debugging-symbols, but now I don't get a bug-reporting window any more (maybe tomorrow...). I now installed libtotem-plparser1-dbg (which isn't useful I think?) and libmpeg2-4-dev (found it in the stack trace). Which debugging-symbols are useful? ** Affects: totem (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- totem crashes when draging slider while playing dvd https://launchpad.net/bugs/78249 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Here is the second bug-report. [Bug 78249] Re: totem crashes when draging slider while playing dvd
I also found the same behaviour with go-skip to, except that totem doesn't crash. It only seems busy seeking and at the end he only shows an image of that moment without playing further. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gdm The Happy Gnome gdm theme is broken in Feisty (see screenshot) : it displays a face browser, but shouldn't, as it never did, and as there is already a variant of this very theme that inclues a browser. ** Affects: gdm (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Happy Gnome theme shows a face browser https://launchpad.net/bugs/78252 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 78173] Re: can't look up words in Dictionary
Hi, I set the status to confirmed. I have the same problem in Feisty, and notice that it now ALSO shows in Edgy !! It must have been some update causing this, because it sure used to work fine when edgy was released ! When I start gnome-dictionary from a terminal, I get this error message: Unable to find dictionary source Which sure would explain why it fails to look-up ANY word ! ;-) Now WHY did suddenly the sources go missing ?? :-/ Not being a native English speaker, I use the dictioanry quite a lot and this bug should obviously be marked as critical/blocker, since well, it renders the program 100% useless... ** Changed in: gnome-utils (Ubuntu) Status: Unconfirmed = Confirmed -- can't look up words in Dictionary https://launchpad.net/bugs/78173 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 78173] Re: can't look up words in Dictionary
Yeah I think we should wait untill the beginnig of next week before we do anything further. It may just be that the translation server is down (because the spanish one works just fine). And in that case it may not get fixed untill after the weekend. \TLE -- can't look up words in Dictionary https://launchpad.net/bugs/78173 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
