[Bug 116141] JPEG printed-to-file as PDF is huge
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: eog There seems to be a lack of a good tool in GNOME for bunching scanned pages together into a PDF. I thought that I could do it with EOG, then use pdftk to concatenate the pages in to a single PDF. But the resulting PDFs are huge, many times the size of the original JPEG. It seems that printing a JPEG to a PDF file in EOG causes the image compression to be lost. Can EOG be fixed, or is there some other tools that's better in GNOME? I ended up using OpenOffice but that's a too-big stick for the job really. ** Affects: eog (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- JPEG printed-to-file as PDF is huge https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/116141 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for eog in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 116156] Print-to-PDF from EOG needs compression options
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: eog A followup to bug 116141, pared back and phrased, I hope, in the form of a feature request that can be accepted: It would be good if EOG provided PDF compression options in its 'print to PDF' feature. At present, the PDFs output by EOG can easily be many times the size of the original image. I consider this to be a bug: all that EOG has to do is wrap the JPEG with a bit of text and that should be fine, at least in the case of some image file-types. The fact that a 200K JPEG can give you an 1.2 M PDF is unexpected and likely to users into confusion. Problem: switching between users does not work. I can generally log into administrator account with no problems, but when trying to log into a 'lesser' account I will either have the problem described above or the machine will hang completely as soon as the desktop is loaded, at this point I can do nothing (no ctrl-alt-bkspc to quit WM, no ctrl-alt-f1 for tty1(?) and no alt-sysRQ-B to restart) please dont hesitate to reply for more info/outputs, and hopefully I can be helpful we can get this resolved. [Bug 112102] Too easy to accidentally kill dbus from Services settings and lock yourself out of services
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools From the Services settings dialog (services-admin), I accidentally clicked the box for System Communication bus (dbus) instead of Printer service (hplip) directly above it. This happened because the dialog had stopped responding briefly while disabling Printer Service (cupsys) without any indication, and a slight inadvertant movement of the scrollwheel was registered before the mouse click after it had finished disabling cupsys, moving dbus under the mouse. Immediately Services closed and attempts to re-run it produced the message you are not allowed to access the system configuration. I have no idea how a novice UNIX user would have figured this out. I'm not an experienced Linux user, but I've got 30 years experience with UNIX as a developer, network admin, and FreeBSD committer (^_^) and it took me maybe a quarter of an hour to figure out what the Linux, Debian, and/or Ubuntu ways of doing things were, track down the actual error (failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket), and figure out how to start dbus cleanly again. It should not be this easy to saw off the branch you are sitting on. Recommendations: 1a. Services Settings should fork and perform extended operations in the background, to avoid the UI freezing, or 1b. Services Settings should provide immediate feedback when it is performing an extended operation. And: 2a. Services settings should require an explicit Apply step, or 2b. Services that Services Settings depends on should warn the user that Services will terminate and wait for approval, or 2c. Services that Services Settings depends on should only be visible after selecting an advanced option. ** Affects: gnome-system-tools (Ubuntu) Importance: High Assignee: Ubuntu Desktop Bugs Status: Confirmed -- Too easy to accidentally kill dbus from Services settings and lock yourself out of services https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/112102 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 116183] GTK's compose map is different to X's
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: libgtk2.0-0 I'm guessing that GTK is the root cause of this. But basically, I can't type certain compose sequences in Mozilla, OOo or gnome-terminal that work in xterm or emacs. Or, the resultant sequences will be different. For instance, in emacs or xterm if I type Multi_key underscore A, I get a ā as defined in /usr/share/X11/locale/en_US.UTF-8/Compose. However, if I enter it in any gtk application, I get ª. This is particularly irritating when entering pīnyīn, which uses characters like ǚ. I have yet to figure out what gtk expects me to hit to compose a character with a caron on it, or why it doesn't just let X.org do it for it. I've seen this in all Ubuntu releases from Dapper to Feisty, and I expect that this is the root cause behind Bug #98945 too. Note I'm using xkb directly to configure my keyboard, not gnome- keyboard-properties. Every time I start certain gnome-control-panel applications they will override this keymap and I will have to re-run xkbcomp to load the keymap I actually want. ** Affects: gtk+2.0 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- GTK's compose map is different to X's https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/116183 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for gtk+2.0 in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 113067] Re: gdm hangs before login
I'm not sure what you mean by what session do you choice; in GRUB I go with the newest kernel version (currently 2.6.17-11-386), gdm doesn't get as far as the login screen, and at the command line I just enter my username and password. I get the first Ubuntu loading screen, with the progress bar, and then go to a blank light-brown page, which is where it hangs. ping 127.0.0.1 seems to work exactly as normal. [Bug 112955] vino (vnc) keyboard mapping problem
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: vino I'm pretty sure this started after an upgrade from Edgy to Feisty. VNC / Vino no longer works correctly. The main alphanumeric keys map from the client to the server OK (so if I press A on the client keyboard A appears on the VNC screen in whatever application I'm working in), but others do not. For example: | (pipe) is interpreted by vino as ` (backquote) and are interpreted as z and x Other people seem to have a similar problem - see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=382441 I can't find any obvious configuration files to tweak. Both client and server machines have UK keyboards (and Ubuntu is configured with UK keyboard layout). The client machine is Win98 running realvnc 3.3.6 but I've just tried 4.1.2 and that doesn't fix it. Thanks in advance for your help. the session can be choosed in the gdm menu. Any reason you still use 2.6.17 and not 2.6.20 on feisty? There is nothing interesting in the logs the bug is not confirmed on other installation though so it's likely to be due to some locale change.
