[Bug 129879] login picture doesn't show up

2007-08-02 Thread Agent-X
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Problem: Login picture of new user does not show up in login screen.

Details:
1. Live-CD version of Ubuntu Feisty (7.04).

Steps for reproducibility:

Boot from the CD.

System - Administration - Login Window

Local - Happy Gnome with Browser - Close

System - Administration - Users and Groups

Add User - created Desktop user with the name user1

CTRL+ALT+Backspace

Login to user1

System - Preferences - About me

Chose baseball.png from /usr/share/pixmaps/faces/

Logged out.

Picture did not show up.

Possible reasons:

I read in some various places of the web, including Redhat and fedora
areas, that this is a bug with gdm. It seems like people tried fixing it
then upgrading the version, but I've noticed that users persist to have
this problem with the updated version. Maybe I'm one of them.

I've also read it has to do with permissions and the way files are

[Bug 93381] Re: [Feisty] Name column width in nautilus

2007-08-02 Thread Thilo Six
Upstream update:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=419343#c5

I've committed a patch that restores the old column autosizing behaviour, while
keeping the ellipsization of the column. I think it's the best compromise right
now, since I think the intent of the change was not make the initial filename
column size hard-wired, but to get ellipsization applied to it. I know the old
behaviour is not always ideal (if you have a folder with single long filename
for example), but nobody really complained about it.
The expandable-column-based approach looks promising, but behaves quirky with a
stock gtk+ as long as bug 316087 is not fixed.

2007-08-01 Martin Wehner [EMAIL PROTECTED]

* libnautilus-private/Makefile.am:
* libnautilus-private/nautilus-cell-renderer-text-ellipsized.c:
* libnautilus-private/nautilus-cell-renderer-text-ellipsized.h:
* src/file-manager/fm-list-view.c: (create_and_set_up_tree_view):
Use a custom cell renderer for the filename column which applies
ellipsization but reports its size based on the actual width of
the text to be rendered. This restores the original column
autosizing behaviour while keeping the ellipsization. (#419343)

[Bug 79030] Re: gnome-video-thumbnailer uses all available CPU power when using bittorrent

2007-08-02 Thread Enola Gay
I can confirm this for Feisty. This is not a Bittorrent problem. It is
general since it happens for every video file which is downloaded at the
moment and which is shown in Nautilus. I have this problem with
DownThemAll (Firefox plugin) too and the Thumbnailer uses 100% CPU and
lets my fan run very loud. The easy solution is to close Nautilus but I
think this shouldn't be needed.

BTW I don't think that this is a Totem problem. I think Nautilus is the
app which starts gnome-video-thumnailer so it has to be fixed. Maybe
Nautilus shouldn't create Thumbnails for videos/files which are in use
(only writing, reading would be no problem).

do you have a slow connexion or it stopping? Nautilus update the

[Bug 129904] lockdown settings not locking ability to lock screen

2007-08-02 Thread Jan Groenewald
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

I have the below settings in a lab, to lock the environment down, to
prevent screen locking and user switching and other bad habits in this
context. It is all mandatory gnome settings. I set it with

gconftool-2 --direct --config-source
xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory --type blah

/desktop/gnome/lockdown/disable_lockscreen_and_logout true
/desktop/gnome/lockdown/disable_lock_screen true
/desktop/gnome/lockdown/disable_user_switching true
/apps/gnome-screensaver/user_switch_enabled false
/apps/gnome-power-manager/can_hibernate false
/apps/gnome-power-manager/can_suspend false
/apps/gnome-screensaver/lock_enabled false

It works fine up to a point. In the logout dialogue there is only the
logout option. In the system menu there is no lock screen. In the
screensaver preferences these things are greyed out. However, the ctl-
alt-l default key is still able to lock the screen (or running gnome-
screensaver -l).

I'm assuming gnome lockdown settings (disable_lock_screen) should affect
gnome-screensaver too?

I think one should have both the option to remove it from menus (as it
does now) and a further option to actually disallow users from running
it.

[Bug 79030] Re: gnome-video-thumbnailer uses all available CPU power when using bittorrent

2007-08-02 Thread Enola Gay
I have a 6 Megabit connection.
I have realized that it takes over ten seconds after opening the directory with
the video download until the gnome-video-thumbnailer is started which consumes
nearly all cpu time he can get. After some time the process exits which results
in normal cpu usage for some time and then it starts again. This seems to be
repeated until the download has finished.

[Bug 44989] Re: Doesn't print (large) PDF files

2007-08-02 Thread thesoothsayer
I found out that I have a the same problem printing pdf files made from
Open Office Impress slides on a HP LaserJet 4350dtn. The file itself is
just around 384kB but it cannot even queue using evince. No errors were
found in the /var/log/cups/error_log file.

When I tried it with lpr filename.pdf, it sent it to the queue, the printer's
processing light is blinking but nothing comes out even after 1 hour and other
jobs were blocked. I had to cancel the print job to stop it. The
/var/log/cups/error_log file showed:
E [02/Aug/2007:19:25:16 +0900] [Job 32] pdftops-options: -cfg
/etc/cups/pdftops.conf

The file prints fine on Windows and on FC4 (albeit slowly) which I was
using previously.

[Bug 129472] Re: rhythmbox crashes when seeking in =96kbps mp3 files

I mean crossfade. Go to Preferences in the Edit menu and then go to the
Playback tab. Tick the Enable crossfading effects checkbox, and move
the slider to 0 seconds. Make sure crossfade between songs in the same
album is unchecked. (0 second crossfade=gapless playback. That's what I
use it for.) Restart rhythmbox and then try and seek in a 96kbit mp3.
(Once you've finished this, you'll probably want to disable crossfade
again, as it seems to me that there are quite a lot of other problems
with it, eg inability ot play m4a/aac).

me wonder if the thing is really fixed. From what I understand, it tells
me that the dv1394 device is not to be used in the near future, making
the whole thing break again? Does this bug need to be reopened?

[Bug 124440] gnome needs a way to manipulate scroll speed

2007-08-02 Thread Jim Hutchinson
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

This has been driving me nuts for a while now. The scroll wheel on my
desktop mouse (it's an MS wireless optical mouse model 1008) scrolls
rather fast. Instead of moving a few lines, it scrolls half a page or
more with a very gentle scroll. The bluetooth mouse I use with my laptop
does not do this so it's probably somewhat hardware specific. However,
I'm wondering if there is a way to modify the speed or sensitivity. I
found an answer here from about a year ago
(https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/1339) that suggests
there isn't a way but I'm wondering if anything has changed since then.
I've also skimmed through synaptic but didn't see anything promising
(like gsynaptic for touchpads).

Thanks.

See https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/9200 for more
information.

[Bug 61082] Re: File-roller don't use mime type, also context menu open with seems duplicate view function.

2007-08-02 Thread Miguel Martinez
Hi Sebastien,

I just read on the Gnome 2.19.6 release notes and found this (link
http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/desktop/2.19/2.19.6/NEWS):

 NEWS: file-roller-2.19.4

version 2.19.4
--
* Get the mime type from the file content to find out the default
application to use when viewing a file.

This might close the bug, although I'm not currently on my Ubuntu Gutsy
box to check package versions and if file-roller really uses MIME types
correctly now.

[Bug 6290] Re: use /dev/video1394, not /dev/raw1394

2007-08-02 Thread Stefan Richter
Jeff, that's evidently a very old version of dvgrab. File a bug for the
dvgrab package --- it should be updated to version 2.1.

Yes, the dv1394 driver will eventually vanish. But there is no date set
for its removal yet; it depends on how fast the new alternative FireWire
stack which was merged in Linux 2.6.22 and the respective userland
support will reach maturity. The unsupported isochronous request types
in raw1394 that dvgrab 1.x can use alternatively to dvgrab1394 will be
unavailable from Linux 2.6.23 onwards.

Dvgrab 2.x as well as reasonably recent Kino versions use only supported
libraw1394 calls.

Dan, the link to dvgrab-2.1.tgz on the Download page at www.kinodv.org
is mistakenly titled dvgrab-1.2.tar.gz.

[Bug 125372] Re: EPS file kills my harddisk

sudo apt-get install gs-gpl
sudo update-alternatives --config gs (-choosing gs-gpl)

2007-08-02 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thanks for your comments. This does not appear to be a bug report as
such. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make
more sense to raise your question in the support tracker.
