[Bug 25931] Re: Failed to initalize HAL.

2007-09-10 Thread pjohnson6
hi paul j here.

i am running gutsy tribe 5. my startup would run and then drop into text
mode at Starting system tools backends system tools backends. machine
would then hang for 2-3 minutes gdm would start and as soon as desktop
loaded Failed to initialize HAL. i looked around and found dbus and hal
starting as S12dbus and S12hal in /etc/rc2.d/. i also saw in upstart
info that hal is dependent on dbus so i changed hal to S13hal and gdm to
S14gdm in /etc/rc2.d/ by deleting links and relinking. everything is
fine now. i dont know if this helpful or correct. i hope it is helpful

[Bug 138533] nautilus panels are not clickable after login

2007-09-10 Thread Nikopol
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

For about 2-4 minutes after I logon both the top menu (applications etc)
and the bottom one (virtual desktop) are not accessible to me - if I
click on them nothing happens. However, all the clicking around seems to
be remembered and is then acted upon after the 3 minute hang so you get
3 copies of firefox opening then.

Not sure what else I need to submit with this report - the desktop works
fine btw so I've started to created shortcuts on the desktop so I can
work while waiting for the panels to fuction

[Bug 138536] add/remove application vs synaptic

2007-09-10 Thread Andrew Frank
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome

there is a confusion what can be installed with
- gnome - applications - add/remove
- system - synaptic
- apt-get in terminal

for a user, especially the two first options are difficult to understand
why is rdiff-backup not an application and must be installed with synaptic?
(other examples possible).

is it possible to reduce this confusion to allow a drop back from add/remove to
synaptic if the package is not found
or (not so desirable) communicate the difference when things are one place or
the other.

thank you for a good system - i hope to help to improve it

[Bug 134475] Re: xournal / gdk_event_get_coords bug in 7.10 gutsy

2007-09-10 Thread Vincenzo Ciancia
It seems to me a gtk bug too. I have this bug with version 0.4, too, not
only from page 16. To test, open a new document, scroll down the page a
bit, and then try to write something (even using the mouse). This is
really a showstopper for tablet pcs on ubuntu, I think it should be
considered high priority for that reason, since xournal is the only
tablet pc app in ubuntu.

[Bug 13199] Re: Drag n' Drop directories from File-Roller is somewhat tricky

2007-09-10 Thread Michael
I have tested nautilus + file-roller patch with file-roller version 2.19.92.
Dnd to smb or ssh share does _not_ work! I can drag a file from file-roller to
this share (I don't get an error msg), but the file isn't unzipped.

Before applying file-roller patch (only nautilus patch), I got an error/warning
that extraction to this share (smb or ssh) is not possible.
I still think that this nautilus patch should be integrated in gutsy! But the
file-roller patch should be reworked to solve the mentioned problems! Otherwise
someoune could be irritated, because dnd doesn't work like it should (and no
error/warning occurs)!

[Bug 138571] [gutsy] can't get into x (gdm xdmcp x problem?)

2007-09-10 Thread Bastiaan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

From today on I can't login to my laptop at least sort of:
When I start my laptop I get a window where I need to choose a host to connect
to (including my host/ip) but it does not start it whatever option I try. It
can scans the network alright as it detects the 'other' linux machine on the
netword with xdmcp enabled but this machine is not yet restarted with the
latest update/upgrade (and I will not restart it yet as I am afraid I will end
up in the same situation as my laptop)

I also can start x applications from the laptop via ssh -x login.

(I saw there is a new linux kernel in use Linux 2.6.22-11-generic but
starting up with even x.x.x-10-x does not solve my problem -even in
recovery mode- either ... )

Is this a xdmcp problem? in my gdm.conf it is disabled. Or something
else...?

[Bug 13199] Re: Drag n' Drop directories from File-Roller is somewhat tricky

2007-09-10 Thread Robbert
The problem that dnd to a nfs mount doesn't work have to do with the
following issue: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=475296 and
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/file-roller/+bug/138486

Because file-roller threats nfs mounts as remote and shouldn't do that
because nfs mounts are transparent. I have attached the patch for that

[Bug 138586] Gnometris controls very unresponsive when keys are held down

2007-09-10 Thread Scott Ritchie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-games

Play gnometris, and get to around level 3 or 4. This bug is easier to
see at higher levels.

Use the move keys by holding them down. The resulting behavior is very
frustrating - the block will move in spurts, and continue to move after
you let go of the key. Worse still, it becomes impossible to move the
block all the way to the side before it declines several rows, making it
literally impossible to place a block in the upper right corners of the
board as the level increases.

Regardless, even basic play becomes frustrating like this at a fairly
early level. It is very aggravating letting go of the keyboard and
watching your piece keep flying across the screen beyond your control.

[Bug 138603] Gnometris scoring is poor

2007-09-10 Thread Scott Ritchie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-games

The scoreboard doesn't track the number of lines you remove, and unlike
every other Tetris implementation there are no bonus points for dropping
a tile early. Worse still, the points make no sense. Scoring 4 at once
is 7.5 times as valuable as scoring 4 lines separately, yet both advance
the level the same.

With this scoring system, the game quickly degenerates into little more
than trying to line up Tetrises until you get to a level where it
becomes impossible to place your pieces where you want them.

[Bug 138607] gnome-terminal memory leak

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

When using gnome-terminal over a prolonged period of time (especially
with eg. mplayer which outputs a status line via ncurses) the memory
usage becomes enormous. hundreds of MB's. The process only releases the

[Bug 136251] Re: trackerd crashed with SIGSEGV

2007-09-10 Thread Ralf Nieuwenhuijsen
Thanks, Aurelien, you are right. The workaround of bug #138399 fixes the
issue for me. (unsetting XDG_DATA_DIRS). Off course that's not the fix,
but they claim it has been submitted.

Can the original bug-poster please check, if the following workaround
makes it work:

  unset XDG_DATA_DIRS
  trackerd

If it doesn't crash, than this bug is a duplicate of bug #138399 of
which the fix has been commited (though not yet in the repositories)

[Bug 124320] Re: define: kayword returns a firefox error in epiphany

2007-09-10 Thread Matias
I found the upstream response rather lame, the default behaviour of the
address bar in epiphany is to google-search when you type something and
hit enter. if you type gmail and hit enter it doesent look for gmail.com
(as firefox do, it attaches the .something then www.something and so
on) it google-searchs for pages that has the gmail keyword in it as
any search.

So... Jérôme. can you make me a favour and tell the gnome guy or ephy
guy from my part: are you joking at me???. seriously.

It IS supposed to search google when you type a keyword on the address
bar and hit enter. This IS a bug and a misinterpretation of the text on
the addres bar. it happens with whatever sentence you put at it that has
a word and a double colon (say something with this structure word: algo
más puesto por acá).

[Bug 138629] playing a CD on random does not play all tracks

2007-09-10 Thread Alex Mauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I loaded a CD, and started playing it with Rhythmbox. Initially it was
on repeat + shuffle.

After playing 3 tracks, I turned off repeat.

Rhythmbox (randomly) played one of those three tracks, and I skipped it
(since I'd just heard it).

I then listened to the CD until Rhythmbox stopped playing.

I looked at the play count for the CD, and one track was never played,
while all the other tracks had a play count of 1.

That bug is not the same.

That bug is about a file on the import-errors list, and when moved to

[Bug 138651] Re: evince doesn't display pdf as it should - low quality pdf font

2007-09-10 Thread David Freitas
Cool Pedro.

Check these screen shots out: The text is grainy/broken on evince.
(No, it's nothing to do with the png encoding of the screenshots I uploaded,
the difference is as it looks on my screen)

The evince shots show the incorrect displaying of the document I am refering to.
Even at 200% evince still looks like a inkjet printer quality (pixels missing)
versus a laser printer quality in the other readers. (No, this problem is not
about printers that print paper, it's just a metaphor.)
