[Bug 156556] Gimp brushes leave garbage pixel trails

2007-10-24 Thread Eric Seppanen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gimp

I just upgraded from Ubuntu 6.10 to 7.10, and now Gimp has a horrible
display artifact: every tool that uses a brush leaves bright green pixel
trails across the image. Though they go away when the window refreshes
(i.e. minimize and then restore the window), this makes Gimp essentially
unusable for me.

This is with gimp-2.4.0~rc3-1ubuntu7.

A screenshot of the problem is here:

[Bug 156555] libgnomeui-common_2.20.1-0ubuntu1 won't install

2007-10-24 Thread Suger
Public bug reported:

When trying to install libgnomeui-common_2.20.1-0ubuntu1 from gutsy-
proposed, I get the following error message :

E: /var/cache/apt/archives/libgnomeui-common_2.20.1.1-0ubuntu1_all.deb:
il n'y a pas de script dans cette nouvelle version du paquet - abandon

rough translation : there is no script in this new version of the
package. Failure.

Which makes the package uninstallable (and the update sit pperpetually
in the update manager). So there seems to be a problem with the package

[Bug 156564] CPU frequency isn't shown in Gnome (Ubuntu 7.10) on systems with powersave enabled processors

2007-10-24 Thread Robert Dzikowski

I have laptop with Intel Core 2 Duo processor. This processor has two
speeds: powersave - processor works at 50% of its maximum frequency and
performance - processor works at 100% of its maximum frequency. After
installing Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy) I found out that Ubuntu starts in

[Bug 156574] wish: allow different data sources for clock calendar applet

Hi. Though I think the integration between Evolution and the
clock/calendar applet is great, I would like to be able to choose which
application it integrates to. My calendar application of choice is
Mozilla Sunbird, and I would really like to see my events there, and I'm

[Bug 156593] toolbar still displayed in slideshow

2007-10-24 Thread Jeldert Pol
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: eog

When starting a slideshow with Eye of Gnome there is a toolbar visible.
In previous versions (before Gutsy) this was not the case. The toolbar
is also visible in full screen mode.

I suggest hidding the toolbar in a slideshow. It can still be displayed
in full screen. Even better, make it optional. Create an option in
Preferences, In the Slideshow tab.

[Bug 74008] Re: Taking screenshots of the invidual window fails to capture window decorators

2007-10-24 Thread David Prieto
I opened a bug in the compiz fusion forums regarding the issue, this is
what a member replied:

gnome-screenshot relies on finding the parent window containing the
currently focused widget, then the parent of that, and the parent of
that, all the way up to the top level, where it is presumed that the
parent just before reaching the desktop window is the window border.
Since the window borders drawn by Compiz's window decorators aren't
actually part of the window, the last parent that gnome-screenshot sees
before hitting the desktop window is the focused window, minus the
borders.

Compiz plugins know offhand the exact size and position of every window,
so they don't need to look for parents, and don't encounter the same
problem.

... That's as much sense as I was able to make from the source code,
anyway. *shrug* What I mean is, even though it may seem like an easy
problem to fix, it may not be.

[Bug 151523] Output

2007-10-24 Thread Carl-Erik Kopseng
Was supposed to enclose multiple files in the last comment, but just got
one file uploaded, so the subject line was wrong.

The previous output (after.logout.txt) just came once, after restarting
the machine and logging in again, to see if that bettered things. Got
heaps of error messages say this and that panel applet could not start
(at login), and then this output came. Did not happen again.

The file I am enclosing now is the normal output when I start
Evolution and try to save one of the (empty) calendars.

Re: [Bug 156551] Re: The movie player worked now it is a black screen with sound while it plays, no picture. ?

2007-10-24 Thread John
I tired a lot of things, like reloading the files from add and remove
and also from the synaptic package manager.
The file was running from a USB card,I checked it and it does run on
another computer fine. The only other thing I noticed was there was no
SAFE TO REMOVE or EJECT on the USB logo on the desktop, but it did give
me a warning to use the SAFE or EJECT command. That was there earlier
but it too is now gone.
(All in all I like this OS better than Windows, but I can see it takes
some getting used too and some things are best left alone)
I did try to reinstall it but that did not work, as it does not have a
reinstall option on the disk.
It did ask to install codecs for wmv and while it did do it, it still
runs with only sound, no picture.
Thanks,
John

[Bug 156620] Looses track of user activity

2007-10-24 Thread iazz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

At some point, I just haven't figured when yet, g-s-s seems to be losing
track of user activity and doesn't issue SessionIdleChanged signals
anymore. Consequently gnome-power-manager doesn't change the DPMS
timeouts of X and they either stay as they were when g-p-m set them or
(worse) they stay zero all the time, which has the effect of not
blanking the displays anymore.

I ran both g-s-s and g-p-m (latest version as of Gutsy) with --debug and
--no-daemon for quite some time, plus dbus-monitor. The screensaver
timeout was set to 1 minute without activation when idle (even blank
screen eats 25% of CPU with Compiz here) and the display sleep timeout
in g-p-m was set to 2 minutes. I'm also running X with Compiz and
Twinview (nvidia's latest driver 100.14.23). The debug output of g-p-m
was useless in this case as it did output almost nothing.

First strange thing, g-s-s doesn't always issue
SessionPowerManagementIdleChanged signals, but that's another question.
Usually, g-s-s goes like this:

  Idle notice signal detected: 1
Idle notice signal not handled: 1
  in idle timer
  Idle signal detected: 1
  Setting session idle: 1
  Checking for activation
  Changing idle state: 1

and it issues a SessionIdleChanged(true) signal. Then g-p-m sets the
DPMS timeouts and displays eventually go to sleep. G-s-s sees that the
display is put to sleep and goes like that:

adding throttler from Power screensaver for reason 'Display DPMS activated'
on connection :1.73
  Checking for throttle
throttler: Power screensaver for reason: Display DPMS activated
  Changing throttle status: 1

Upon user activity, the displays turn back on, the DPMS timeouts are
reset to 0 and g-s-s goes like that:

  Idle signal detected: 0
  Setting session idle: 0
  Checking for activation
  Changing idle state: 0

and a few seconds later:

removing throttler from Power screensaver for reason 'Display DPMS activated'
on connection :1.73
  Checking for throttle
  Changing throttle status: 0

Now after some time, probably due to some specific activity that I've
not been able to determine yet, the behavior changes and it goes like
this:

  Idle notice signal detected: 1
Idle notice signal not handled: 1
  in idle timer
  Idle signal detected: 1
  Setting session idle: 1
Trying to set idle state when already idle
Idle changed signal not handled: 1
Idle signal was not handled, restarting watcher
  turning watcher: OFF
  Stopping idle watcher
  turning watcher: ON
  Starting idle watcher

and no SessionIdleChanged is issued anymore.

There are probably other exact behaviors, depending on the state that
DPMS was left (active or zero), but I don't know really how to reproduce
it. If you need more debug info I have kept all the debug logs of g-s-s
and dbus-monitor.

[Bug 140460] Re: Evolution : On startup unable to connect to POP server

2007-10-24 Thread Neil Woolford
I've now had another look at the possible interaction with Network-
Manager.

Basically I removed Network-Manager from my system and manually
configured the (wireless ethernet) connection to the internet.

The symptom of asking for for the password and then looping continued to
exist. So it looks like Network-Manager is not the culprit.

Using the PPP connection (set up through GnomePPP) and a modem card
continues to work properly; Evolution then starts offline; when put
online by clicking the connect button it connects and just asks for the
password once, going on to work normally.

As others have observed, starting Evolution in a terminal with the
--offline option also works. (Although I notice that the camel error
messages still appear in the console).

For me what happens here is that when using the --offline switch
Evolution still appears to start in online mode; I guess that this
means it is detecting the network connection and switching itself to
online immediately. Anyway, the password behaviour is then normal,
which is at least a fix of the symptom.

I can also confirm that shutting down Evolution in folders other than
inbox leads to a clean start.

As a temporary fix of the symptom I've added the --offline switch after
--component=mail in the Gnome Panel launcher for Evolution. This seems
to work ok for now.

(I also notice that if running in conditions where the password dialogue
loops, cancelling the first dialogue before entering a password leads to
normal correct operation if mail pickup is initiated manually.)

[Bug 156653] gdm session crashes after logging in (after upgrade to 7.10)

2007-10-24 Thread SteveH
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Hi,
After upgrading to Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10, I can no longer open a normal Gnome
session. When I enter my user and password the screen goes black then I see for
a brief second what seems to be part of the startup log after which I am
returned to the login screen.

On the other hand, I can login successfully if I choose a Gnome failsave
session.

Please could somone indicate what logs I should look at to find the
error?

Thanks for any help on this.

SteveH

The gdm logs of the succeeded startups and the failed ones seem to be
identical.

I'm including the latest gdm log, the gdm.conf file and the xorg.conf

# GDM System Defaults Configuration file.
#
# This file should not be updated by hand. Since GDM 2.13.0.4, configuration
# choices in the GDM System Configuration file (/etc/gdm/gdm.conf) will
# override the default values specified in this file.
#
# If you were using an older version of GDM, your system may have the the older
# gdm.conf configuration file on the system. If so, then this file is used
# instead of the GDM Custom Configuration file for backwards support. If you
# make changes to the GDM Custom Configuration file and they seem to not be
# taking effect, this is likely the problem. Consider migrating your
# configuration to the new configuration file and removing the gdm.conf file.
#
# You can use the gdmsetup program to graphically edit the gdm.conf-custom
# file. Note that gdmsetup does not support every option in this file, just
# the most common ones that users want to change. If you feel that gdmsetup
# should support additional configuration options, please file a bug report at
# http://bugzilla.gnome.org/.
#
# If you hand-edit the GDM configuration, you should run the following command
# to get the GDM daemon to recognize the change. Any running GDM GUI programs
# will also be notified to update with the new configuration.
#
# gdmflexiserver --command=UPDATE_CONFIG configuration key
#
# e.g, the Enable key in the [debug] section would be debug/Enable.
#
# You can also run invoke-rc.d gdm reload or invoke-rc.d gdm restart
# to cause GDM to restart and re-read the new configuration settings.
# You can also restart GDM by sending a HUP or USR1 signal to the
# daemon. HUP behaves like restart and causes any user session
# started by GDM to exit immediately while USR1 behaves like
# reload and will wait until all users log out before
# restarting

[Bug 132833] Re: login background color is hardcoded

2007-10-24 Thread yop
In my opinion, this is the best solution:

Replace this line in /etc/gdm/PreSession/Default

BACKCOLOR=#dab082

With this:

BACKCOLOR=`gdmflexiserver --command=GET_CONFIG greeter/BackgroundColor
$DISPLAY`

That did not work for me, however.
If I replace the line in /etc/gdm/PreSession/Default

# Default value
if [ x$BACKCOLOR = x ]; then
BACKCOLOR=#dab082
fi

to

# Default value
if [ x$BACKCOLOR = x ]; then
BACKCOLOR=x
fi

Then it obey the login manager colour settings.

[Bug 128803] Re: [Gutsy] very slow gnome startup

2007-10-24 Thread dcherryholmes
I attempted the fix proposed by Brandon Snider and it did not work for
me. I also created a new user with default .gnome configs and login was
still very slow. Since I use a laptop, with an ATI card, and suspend is
broken with both the radeon and fglrx driver, this is a pretty serious
regression, at least for those of us that are affected by it.

I have the same problem, it took almost 3 minutes today from login to
complete display of the desktop. I've never had this issue in previous
versions. I have a Toshiba Satellite 2450-S201 with 512 RAM, no
Compiz/Beryl or any other eyecandy due to issues with drivers for the
Nvidia GeForce4 420Go graphics card.

[Bug 152068] Re: num_sessions never decrease after xdmcp logout

2007-10-24 Thread Sebastien Bacher
 gdm (2.20.1-0ubuntu1) gutsy-proposed; urgency=low
 .
   * New upstream release:
 - Now gdmlogin and gdmgreeter treat Tab like enter if the focus
is on the entry field. This addresses usability issues as
   described in bug #433495.
 - Fix bug that was causing the user's default language/session choices
to not get saved properly if they didn't already have a $HOME/.dmrc
   file.
 - Fix bug with XDMCP logic that was causing GDM to get confused
about when the maximum number of XDMCP sessions has been reached.
   (LP: #152068)
 - Fix an issue that was causing the username to be logged as a debug
message when using GDM configured to use crypt or shadow passwords
(instead of the default PAM). This could cause the user's password
to get saved as a debug message if the user accidently typed their
password into the username field when using crypt/shadow passwords.
No longer translate debug messages in general.
 - Set stdout/stderr to DEV_NULL when spawning at_spi_registryd and
the prefetch program, fixing a hanging problem.
 - GDM now always sends the daemon a response before exit to avoid a
   hang.
 - Fix gdmXnestchooser and gdmsetup so debug isn't on by default.
   (LP: #137276)
 - Updated the gdmgreeter themes so that they display correctly
   on 800x600 displays.
 - Build/configure fixes for Solaris.
 - Translation updates
   * debian/patches/65_tab-means-enter-after-entry.patch:
