Re: [Bug 151544] Re: [Gutsy] GNOME takes too much time to load during system boot
This would be my last comment. I have just remove Ubuntu 7.10 from my system.. this thing is to buggy.. The whole thing about ubuntu was to have an out of the box working properly linux distro. 7.10 is far from this.. it was fun to see some new features, we are going the right direction.. but still not there. As the linux thing is mainly based on freedom of choice, im free to choose other distro in the meanwhile that will do exactly what i want. I will check new future releases. -- With Kind Regards, Anibal E. Ojeda Gonzalez Phone: +31 (0) 6 15003239 http://www.anibalnet.nl http://myspace.anibalnet.nl Andrew To think that the desktop should look significantly different between releases is a side effect of having used Windows too long! Linux is a progressive development and many of the tools I use have fixed issues I had in previous releases or added new functions that I now use. Balaji I'm not expecting a significant change in the desktop. In fact between Feisty and Gutsy there IS a change in the desktop - Compiz. But I don't care about it. What I'm looking for is: 1. Better driver support for different printer, scanner models etc. 2. Better support of Wireless. My wireless connection setup is still a very complex procedure. 3. Bettter VPN support 4. POWER MANAGEMENT - This was promised to have improved in Gutsy. I see NO improvement at all. 5. Better Bluetooth support - I still can't send stuff to my laptop from my mobile. I don't know when I will send SMSes from my laptop. I know each one of them have a different software now, like vpnc or kbluetoothd etc. The thing is I want to use the GNOME version of these and reduce the disk space involved in installing multiple software. GNOME promised better work on this. Power management is a matter of the kernel. In the Gutsy release notes they said that the use of the new kernel improves power management. BULLSHIT. Driver support is dependent on their relationship with the community of programmers writing drivers like SANE or ALSA etc. I don't think they have good contacts anymore. Almost everything is broken once you migrate from Feisty. In migrating from one version of OS to the next, I don't want to keep redoing all the setup activities to work on every software and driver. Even restricted drivers was a problem. They don't have a generic kernel based driver from my laptop modem, but a 386 kernel based driver for the same modem is there! This is bad support indeed. There is no significant work for which UBUNTU charges for the services. I'm sure their services suck as much as Gutsy. Till Feisty I was a string supported of Ubuntu and loved it better than ANY OS. Gutsy is a gross disappointment indeed. They'll lose patrons at the rate they are rushing to ruin Linux. -Balaji On Nov 29, 2007 2:48 AM, anibal [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I do agree in one thing, is an anoying bug. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gedit gedit 2.20.3 Nautilus 2.20.0 When the focus is in the file browser pointing at a file and you press the DEL key then the file is directly sent to the trash bin. I did not try it on a folder. I was about to delete some characters in the editor. Then I jumped into the file browser side-panel to look up for some files. Now the focus is on a file. I did not realize the focus was in the file browser so I pressed the DEL key to continue editing (deleting the characters in the editor). The file (with the focus) disappeared. Apparently it went straight to the trash bin. There was no prompt despite my setting in Nautilus::Preferences::Behavior::Trash::Ask before emptying the Trash or deleting files. Even with Include a Delete command that bypasses Trash set to off. This can be very confusing, and probably even hazardous (think of a power failure). One might not notice that the file is trashed. I think this is not an expected behavior. I don't know whether this is a gedit issue or the underlying file browser library (perhaps Nautilus?) but I thought gedit authors should know about it. ** Affects: gedit (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Clicking on DEL immediately send file to trash bin https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/172776 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for gedit in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 162664] Re: no video output module play nice with Compiz
Yes and no. On the one hand, the video drivers (intel, nvidia, ati) all behave the same way in the situation described above. They actually do what the software tells them to do, so they're not technically buggy. And technically so does Compiz: The Xvideo method by definition works using an overlay color, with the video superimposed in hardware just before being sent to the screen. That's AFAIK beyond Compiz' ability to affect behavior, and other than disabling all effects on windows that are using it it's impossible to avoid the nasty artifacts. The X11 method should (and does) work, since the video frames are rendered in a normal X window that Compiz can correctly transform. However, none of the applications I've tried (MPlayer, VLC, Totem and Xine) have nice scaling when that's used. I think this is because it's a relatively slow display method, and applications didn't bother to use a smart software scaler for that case. (There might be some technical limitations I'm not aware of, though.) I think this could be solved by including a good scaler in _each_ applications output plugin, but see below. The OpenGL method should work, but I have yet to see an OpenGL app working correctly in a window under Compiz (on my machine, I've seen it in demos though). This is probably the only case where Compiz is broken, but I don't think there's a quick fix for that. Also, I think it'd be slightly inefficient even if it worked. In conclusion, as far as I can tell, Xvideo can't work under Compiz by definition, simple X11 output would work but would be slow and needs all applications to fix their output plugins, and OpenGL is hard to fix. On the other hand, Compiz does have a video output plugin which is very nice: it's really efficient speed- and memory-wise, does nice scaling and (on some cards) YUV-conversion in hardware, and also has some nice quality implications that are technically impossible for the other modes. According to the first link I posted, this is supposedly relatively easy to implement by modifying an existing plugin. So, seeing that all applications need to update their video output plugins to work correctly in Compiz (see above), they might as well modify them to use Compiz. (The patch for MPlayer that was linked above even features instant switching between Compiz and Xvideo while running.) I know this should be reported upstream, too (and I think it is, actually), but it can't hurt to track it here, too. Also, there might be an Ubuntu developer or two who want to work on this, at least for Totem. -- no video output module play nice with Compiz https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/162664 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for totem in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 161826] Re: Totem-gstreamer package description lies, that DVD (with menus) playback and DVD subtitles + languages are supported
This bug isn't a duplicate of bug #69968 - that bug is about totem- gstreamer player DVD playing bugs (Totem cannot play this type of media (DVD) because you do not have the appropriate plugins ...), while this bug is about lie in Totem-gstreamer package description. Please don't close this bug until deb package description of totem- gstreamer package will be changed. I can repeat what I wrote in bugreport: Totem's gstreamer backend *never* supported DVD menus, DVD subtitles and languages ! Gstreamer developers have no idea when DVD menus and subtitles + languages will be supported, look at bug #41335 for more info. So, why we should lie in description about missing features ? [Bug 172827] Epiphany extensions cause unsolicited connections?
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: epiphany-browser http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=625415 After starting-up Epiphany, I had found that by clicking on the Bookmarks toolbar, Epiphany would start downloading cookies from some of my bookmarked sites. A Security Certificate alert window would also pop- up, because Epiphany was connecting to a bookmarked site which had a problem with its certificate. I investigated further to find the set of actions which seemed to cause this: 1. Enable Auto Reload Tab Favicon Falllback extensions 2. Go to these 3 example webpages (safe), then Add Bookmarks for them: (a) WhatIsMyIP.com - http://www.whatismyip.com (b) Geek To Live article - http://lifehacker.com/software/geek-to-live/partition-and-image-your-hard-drive-with-the-system-rescue-cd-292972.php (c) SecureIX - https://www.secureix.com/config.shtml - has problem with website's Security Certificate 3. Reload the 3 webpages again by visiting them via Bookmarks. 4. Clear browser cache (Temporary Files), clear history, delete all cookies. Then close Epiphany. 5. Start Epiphany, then open Personal Data cookies window (empty with blank homepage) 6. Click on Bookmarks toolbar to see drop-down list, or open Bookmarks window - this triggers the odd behaviour = I will see Connect to untrusted site alert for SecureIX = I will see cookies for lifehacker.com and whatismyip.com added to my Personal Data cookies window = Disabling Auto Reload Tab Favicon Falllback extensions at this point will not help --- Another problem: When Epiphany kept bugging me abt SecureIX, I told Epiphany to always trust the Certificate. When I wanted to undo this, I could not. Using Certificate Manager, when I tried to delete the certificate, the OK Cancel buttons did not work. [Bug 165248] Re: Include necessary header files in the development package
Sebastien, I found the relevant bug for this exact problem in GNOME's bugzilla. It looks like it is a bug in the way their header files are setup. There is already a patch their that will take care of this problem. http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=499920 -- Include necessary header files in the development package https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/165248 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for evolution in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
