[Bug 150193] Re: Remote Login via XDMCP is not working in Ubuntu Gusty/7.10

2007-12-07 Thread caktux
I replaced gdm with kdm on the server side but now I get:
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/X11/cyrillic, removing from
list!
FreeFontPath: FPE /usr/share/fonts/X11/misc refcount is 2, should be 1;
fixing.
when trying to connect. I do get to see the kdm login screen for a fraction of
a second.

[Bug 128803] Re: [Gutsy] very slow gnome startup

2007-12-07 Thread Mike McWay
thats one way to do itmaybe devs will realize how annoying this can
be.

this bug needs instructions on how to approach self-diagnosing the
problem. many people have removed all applets with no results.
sweetsinse seemed to do an extremely thorough job and suggested it may
be a problem with the compiz script used by ubuntu. has this been
explored by any developers knowledgable in this area?

looking at bootchart doesn't mean anything to me, if i go through the
trouble of patching and installing it to analyze login will someone take
a look? first though, how do i do that?

I for one use both compiz and deskbar as i have since edgy, and i've
still noticed a good 15-30sec jump in login time since moving from
feisty. removing them doesnt seem to change much, but when you're
talking about 45sec login vs 60sec its still waaa too lng.

The issue is not to realize how annoying the bug can be, it's to get
useful datas on what is creating the slowness. The code used is mostly
the upstream one and the issue is likely to happen on other distribution
using GNOME 2.20, switching distribution is not going to fix anything
and let to an another set of issues

Public bug reported:

The logic place to show that would be directly below the channel list.

[Bug 113086] Re: Enabling Desktop Effects, some part of firefox, thunderbird and evolution windows are black for few seconds when I deminimize them.

2007-12-07 Thread Henrik Nilsen Omma
This bug was nominated for Gutsy but does currently not qualify for a
7.10 stable release update (SRU) and the nomination is therefore
declined. According the the SRU policy, the fix should already be
deployed and tested in the current development version before an update
to the stable releases will be considered. With 7.10 now released, that
policy applies to this bug. See:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates .

The bug is not being closed as work will continue on fixing it for the
next release, Hardy Heron (8.04). To help improve the state of this bug
see: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/HowToTriage and
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures .

[Bug 174637] firefox crashes everyother minute

2007-12-07 Thread Rash
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

I was using the stumble upon toolbar, and every other site i stumbled
upon caused firefox to crash (it didn't get grayed out like it usually
does, instead it just closes). And every time i boot up after one of
those crashes i get the standard firefox confirm dialog if I want to
restore my session or start a new one.

Also the crash happened about 30-40 seconds in while browsing a new
site, and the Firebug extension reported a javascript error right
before the window was closed.

Note: this does happen while not using the SU toolbar as well, however
not as frequent.

I'd like to add that I get very similar symptoms. I'm running Gutsy on
an Inspiron 5100 laptop that is shared between a family of four. I only
really noticed because after 2+ users are logged in the fan will kick in
and stay on permanently. Whereas usually it only come on every now and
then.

Checking top reveals that xorg is chugging away at 30%-70% cpu usage.

Thanks for your report. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instuctions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be
dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch
nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on
the crash report you wish to submit.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more

[Bug 172348] Re: gnome-settings seems messy/broken after install of ubuntustudio/gstreamer packages (RT-Kernel problem????)

2007-12-07 Thread reinhard
after some investigation I found a lot of other bug reports describing
the same problem, so this seems to be a really big bug that will
hopefully be fixed soon

Also in my case, the problems seems caused by the RT-Kernel, since the problems
gone when I start the default kernel (generic).
But unfortunatelly the setting are still messed, so a hint about how to reset
to the default gnome-settings, especially how to re-enable the update-notifier,
would be really appreciated!!!

greetings
reinhard

[Bug 173561] Re: the gnome system monitor can't work after closing it

2007-12-07 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems.
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 59060] Re: Invest applet renders incorrectly

2007-12-07 Thread Ari
just to confirm that the invest applet is still broken and nonfunctional
under 7.10. Not only it doesn't do anything (it can't be set up, no
context menu, no preferences), there is also no way to uninstall it
other than the workarounds discussed above.

looks like this applet has been been broker for a year or two. sad gnome
doesn't provide an option to monitor stocks. most of us don't care a lot
about this but it's important for the average joe. Also I guess ubuntu
shouldn't ship badly broken applets as this discourages new users.

Create one?

It's an acknowledged feature request, albeit overdue, so remember that
saying fix it there probably won't accomplish anything either. There
are probably technical issues blocking its implementation, or simply
nobody has been interested in it; I'd suggest doing searches in the

elsewhere who may be interested in working on it.

[Bug 156292] Re: I get visual notifications of new mail despite requesting no notifications

2007-12-07 Thread Sini Ruohomaa
Thank you, thank you for the two workarounds (gconftool magic and
plugins), Fergal! I had no idea where the new feature was coming from
and had no way to stop Evolution from shattering my focus randomly -
I've been having to drop it offline while trying to work, and that makes
a quick glance for new email take considerably longer. My brain's
sensitive enough to movement that I can't leave browser windows on most
newspaper sites left open on the desktop I'm working in (without
adblock, that is); they actively bother me.

For the updates to your Ubuntu available -popup bubble there was a
straightforward fix to poke at the icon and tell it to not pop up, and
now we get along splendidly. The email icon, on the other hand, has no
interface beyond click to make this go away until the next mail
arrives; it blinks, pops up a bubble and *keeps blinking* if I try to
ignore it. It's been royally stressful (I get kind of much mail, and
prefer to choose for myself when to go into interrupt-handling mode).

I'd strongly recommend disabling the plugin by default until it both
respects the user's notification settings and can be turned off from the
notification tray directly. Given the existing ways of notifying for new
mail, it's not important enough to warrant the disturbance to users who
use Evolution for heavy-duty mail handling. For others, it should be a
nice and useful tool once the preferences are ironed out a bit. (E.g.
blink/no blink, blink x times then stop, blink x times then go away,
popup/no popup would probably be nice modes to choose from.)
