[Bug 179483] Re: can't shut off update manager

2007-12-31 Thread Iuli Udrea
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description
didn't include enough information. We'd be grateful if you would then
provide a more complete description of the problem.

Thanks again.

I confirm this bug report. After I searched a lot about it, I found that
it was a known issue in Feisty which was suposed to be fixed but that
seems to happen again. Thanks a lot for this detailed bug report, I set
this bug report as a duplicate of bug #66051 and re-open bug #66051
which is also linked to the real upstream gnome bug. You can continue to
contribute to that bug report here if you can provide some important
informations that are still not discovered.

[Bug 66051] Re: [users-admin] Adding a previously existing user fails silently

2007-12-31 Thread Saïvann Carignan
According to the fact that a new bug #178621 has been opened for Gutsy
and Hardy which describe the same issue and that I can reproduce that
issue myself in both Gutsy and Hardy, I re-open that bug report. It's
still not possible to add a new user which already existed in the past.
Deleting the associated group before adding the new user is still a
workaround.

[Bug 179512] new Google Calendar read/write feature doesnt work (at least for germany - (because: googlemail.com instead gmail.com)

2007-12-31 Thread Markus Majer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

In the version of Evolution included right now in the upcoming Ubuntu
8.04, Hardy Heron, there is a bug which makes it impossible to use this
in germany.

Because of legal issues german users get a @googlemail.com adress, while
people from other countries get a @gmail.com adress..

That the bug is about this issue, I recognized looking at the status bar while
trying a connection.
I attached a screenshot where you can see both my Google Calendar Account and
Evolution.

It ends up in [EMAIL PROTECTED]@gmail.com or, if I would leave the domain, in
[EMAIL PROTECTED] :(
To work, it should only be [EMAIL PROTECTED]..

Sad, that the plugin doesnt work for me - I personally know have to use
the Google Data Provider Plugin of Thunderbird + Lightning, again -
until I recognize I can switch over to Evolution!

Thats sad, because we use the Google Calendar here extensively, and if
Evolution could to this, I could finally get my coworkers to switch over
to the default Ubuntu distribution completely.

For germans the [EMAIL PROTECTED] also work, but are not advertised. So it
should work if you just enter mm.mpathy or [EMAIL PROTECTED].

[Bug 179512] Re: new Google Calendar read/write feature doesnt work (at least for germany - (because: googlemail.com instead gmail.com)

2007-12-31 Thread Markus Majer
If I can provide some further information - log files, screen shots, etc. - on
this problem, I will do, just tell me what you need and I will send it.
Altough I use Thunderbird as long as it not works, I would be happy to use
Evolution because its the default mail client in ubuntu and has better desktop
integration.
Is there a possibility to forward this bug reports to [EMAIL PROTECTED] ?
Thats the maintainer of the feature which makes the problems.

[Bug 179512] Re: new Google Calendar read/write feature doesnt work (at least for germany - (because: googlemail.com instead gmail.com)

2007-12-31 Thread Markus Majer
But it doesn't - I thought about that also, but both alternative tries didn't
work!
I think it works if someone sends a mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] for convinience -
but for other stuff it only works with the exact account name with which the
Calendar was registered.

I tried all of that, so I can also say that it definitely DO NOT work
like you suggested.

I also filed the bug to the maintainer of this evolution feature, Ebby
Wiselyn, in her blog.

I can use Thunderbird + Lightning + Google Data Provider until it works
- so after all I want to tell you that don't fixing the bug will exclude
a large group of ubuntu users from that feature (german ubuntu users are
a real big group in ubuntu, and really many of them have Google
Accounts, with @googlemail.com instead @gmail.com for primary definite
account name)

[Bug 179391] Re: outgoing mail rejected

2007-12-31 Thread hggdh
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report and subsequently we are closing it and
converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the
difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise
problems you are having in the support tracker at
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are
bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see

Also, please provide the exact messages you see.

[Bug 179552] gnome-session hangs on log in

2007-12-31 Thread Pär Lidén
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-session

Hello, I'm testing out Hardy Heron. The live cd works fine, but once
installed, I'm unable to log in with gnome.

After I type my username and password and press enter, I hear some disk
activity, but then the system stops completely. However, there is an
error message in .xsession-errors: (I think this is the most releveant
part, complete file attached)

(process:20800): Gtk-WARNING **: This process is currently running setuid or
setgid.
This is not a supported use of GTK+. You must create a helper
program instead.

By echo'ing messages in the startup files, I've found out that when
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/99x11-common-start tries to execute /usr/bin/gnome-
session, it hangs. This suggests something is wrong with with /usr/bin
/gnome-session.

This is on a fresh install from alpha2, only with upgrades applied. I
tried installing KDE, and logging in there works fine. Please tell me
how I should debug this further, I 'm happy for any suggestions.

The computer is a Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz, asus P4C800 motherboard with Intel 875
chipset, 1 Gb ram, wired net connection. I suppose more detailed hw info is not
required here, but please tell me if I should provide that.
Regards
Pär

Re: [Bug 179252] Re: restricted plugins message shows a button, the link for which is incorrect

2007-12-31 Thread Tharakan
Hi,

Steps to repeat the issue:
1. Pop in a DVD.
2. Start Totem.
3. Click on File- Play DVD title.

You get an error message, a screenshot of which is attached. Now the issue
is not the error, I thinkI know about the reason for that error. The issue
is the URL that is displayed in the message box. The link at the center
takes me to

file:///home/robins/'http://www.gnome.org/projects/totem/#codecs'

which is obviously incorrect.

Probably, you may want to correct this link to instead point to this:
http://www.gnome.org/projects/totem/#codecs

*Robins*

[Bug 179550] Rhythmbox can't import some of Sound Juicers Ogg-extractions

2007-12-31 Thread Markus Thielmann
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

1) Install a new (and unmodified) version of Ubuntu 7.10 and do a full update
(it's a german installation, if that matters)
2) Import a few cd's using Sound Juicers extraction feature
3) Start Rhythmbox and set it to monitor your music directory

Rhythmbox now failes on half of the files. rhythmbox -d says (e.g.):

(15:11:16) [0x899e718] [make_access_failed_error] rhythmdb.c:548: got
error on
file:///home/test/Musik/Tostedt%20Community%20Gospel%20Choir/Rivers%20of%20Joy/12%20-%20Going%20Up%20Yonder.ogg:

file:///home/test/Musik/Tostedt%20Community%20Gospel%20Choir/Rivers%20of%20Joy/12%20-%20Going%20Up%20Yonder.ogg
nicht möglich: Datei nicht gefunden

So basicly it says Rhythmbox can't find the given file. If I copy the
URL, Totem just opens it and plays fine.

The selection of bad files seems quite randomly, I can't find any
pattern in rhythmbox selection.

[Bug 164454] Re: Browsing nokia e65 buggy

2007-12-31 Thread impact
Same problem, but with a Nokia E50. First, it displays both the phone
memory (C:) and the phone memory card (E:) fine. Suddenly during
browsing, Nautilus complains that it can't display a folder and the
folder icon changes into a file icon. After pressing refresh/reload in
Nautilus, the icon of the folder usually vanishes completely and
Nautilus throws up two error messages - both saying that it cannot
display the folder.

If I wait a short while (a minute or two) it starts working again - I
don't have to turn BT off - just wait.

[Bug 179577] evince, thumbnailer, nautilus hang on text2ps postscript

2007-12-31 Thread Brian H.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Using evince 2.20.0 with gnome 2.20.0 under Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy on Dell
GX280

To reproduce the problem,
Either
1)
- Use an editor (say, gedit),
copy and paste the lines of this post past the -- into
the buffer,
store the file as file.ps
or
2)
 - Create a file named file.txt containing a single line with text, say Line
1
 - Convert to postscript with
   text2ps file.txt file.ps

Now you have a file called file.ps which causes the (2.20.0) versions of
evince, evince-thumbnailer, and nautilus to choke.

3) (Try) to create a thumbnail with
evince-thumbnailer -s 128 file.ps file.png
Open another terminal and do
ps aux
and note that the process with command evince-thumbnailer -s 128 file.ps
file.png doesn't finish.

4) Note that Nautilus 2.20.0 chokes and no longer generates thumbnails for
any directories,
after it tries to generate a thumbnail for file.ps in the current
directory.

5) (Try) to view file.ps with evince:
   evince file.ps
Observe that evince reports Loading... forever.

[Bug 164971] Re: Gnome freezes after moving or deleting many files

2007-12-31 Thread John McCain
I can confirm this bug when working with MP3 files. Nautilus debug log
attached, although I don't think it will be of much use.

I ran lsof and compared results between a fresh boot and when the
problem is occurring. It seems to be characterized by nautilus opening
an extremely large number of pipes (more than 1000).

2007-12-31 Thread PureRumble
Respond to Stanley Sokolow's questions. You can read his questions in
bug #178621

I looked in /etc/group and /etc/passwd. The user had been deleted from
both of them. But the group UbuntuFun (our fictional user account) was
still in place. I do not if it is supposed to be deleted or not, but a
workaround is to first delete the user account, then delete the group
with the same name as the account, and then create a new account with
the same username as the deleted one.

Tell me if you want to know anything else, but I suspect that this bug
appears in any Gutsy and not only on my system.

[Bug 25931] Re: Failed to initalize HAL.

2007-12-31 Thread Scott Hutslar
I had a clean install of Gutsy on an AMD 2800+. No problems. I then
manually started tuning for boot speed and changed the /etc/init.d/rc
file and made CONCURRENCY=shell. Upon reboot, I immediately received
this issue. I did the ls -l /etc/rc?.d/*hal *dbus and they had a S12
(everything as it should be). I manually changed the rc file back and
made CONCURRENCY=none. Upon reboot, I no longer experienced this
problem.

Just thought I would add this experience to the list in case someone has
forgotten something they have tweaked and started getting this issue. I
don't reboot often, so when I did get this, it took me a while to figure
out what I had done.

[Bug 179628] Re: gdm fails to start after login hardy

2007-12-31 Thread jtholmes
after much testing and googling i have determined that
gdm is running but the first desktop window that has the
gnome look (i.e. application, places, system etc.)
is not there. all i have is a gold screen with
a white mouse cursor and no buttons etc. on the mouse
are active.

[Bug 179628] Re: gdm fails to start after login hardy

2007-12-31 Thread jtholmes
after more investigation i found that i could do the following
get to console 1 via CNTL-ALT + 1
login as normal user not root
execute sudo gdm
gdm starts up
switch to console 7
login as same normal user
get gold screen with white mouse cursor

then

CNTL+ATL + 2
login as normal user
execute sudo gnome-session
gnome-session starts

switch to console 7
gnome window is displayed
with applications, places system etc.

all features work but any logout and relogin
kills gnome-session and I have to manually
restart it from console 2 (or any other console
other than 7) for thing to work again.

an abbreviated method that also worked
boot normally
try to login
get gold screen wth mouse cursor
CNTL+ALT + 1
login as normal user
export DISPLAY=:0.0
sudo gnome-session

switch to console 7
message 'session running as privileged user'
continue quit
select continue
after a bit gnome-session is up

Hi,

Yes, the problem was relating to codecs, the movie only plays OK with
the latest DIVX player on Windows XP.

How do I download the latest CODECS for UBUNTU?

Thanks
