[Bug 179552] Re: gnome-session hangs on log in

2008-01-01 Thread Pär Lidén
I've tried to find out which programs constitute to those pids in
.xsession-errors, but I've been unable to find out that. However. if the
pid of gnome-session is x, then the first of the pids in .xsession-
errors is a little bit higher than x, maybe x+[34], and the and the next
is maybe x + [8-10].

I wrote a small shell script that would do ps ax to a file every 0.01
second, and between two file outputs, it seems that those pid hase
managed to both start and disappear, so it happens very fast. What is
very odd, is that once when I did ran this script and logged in, it did
work! Then I immediately logged out and in, and since then it has not
worked again. :-(

ps ax reveals that gconfd-2 is running, with pid=x + ~50-60, and gnome-
keyring-daemon, pid = x - [1-3]

Hope this could be of some relevance. What would probably be helpful is
to found out which programs constitute to those pids, but I am not
skilled enough in Linux to find out that by myself unfortunately. Could
anyone please tell me how to find out this?

[Bug 179664] Rhythmbox does not display track numbers of WMA files

2008-01-01 Thread Lukas Winter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I use Rhythmbox 0.11.2 on Ubuntu 7.10, German translation.
RB does not show the track number of wma files in the track list, instead the
field is blank. When I open the properties window of one of these songs, it
reports the track number as unknown. It does, however, sort all tracks of this
album (which consists only of wma files) correctly.
I suppose that RB uses a different character encoding for track numbers than
these WMA files. The information must be known to RB, because the songs are in
the right order and not arranged alphabetically.

[Bug 147045] Re: gnome-appearance-properties hogs processor even after close

2008-01-01 Thread Pierre-Charles David
I have the same behaviour as Raymond: removing ~/.gtkrc-2.0 solves the
issue.

I've done a few more experiments:
1. If .gtkrc-2.0 exists but is empty, the bug does not appear.
2. If I launch gnome-appearance-properties with a non-empty .gtkrc-2.0 file,
the bug triggers every time. Once it is triggered, if I remove the .gtkrc-2.0
file or empty it while g-a-p is still running (either the window is still open
or I closed it but g-a-p is still running), g-a-p reacts almost immediately and
the CPU goes back to 0%.
3. If I launch g-a-p with no (or an empty) .gtkrc-2.0 file, the bug is not
triggered, even if I create the file once it is running.

[Bug 178213] Re: When playing CDs, hitting play always starts at track one

2008-01-01 Thread redlizard
Same problem here in SJ 2.20.1 ubuntu 7.10. It also occurs when double
clicking a track other than track 1 to start playback, though tracks can
be changed as expected once playback has started.

Additionally, once track one has finished, the program skips to the
track after the selected one, not track 2, after track 1 has finished
playing.

[Bug 147045] Re: gnome-appearance-properties hogs processor even after close

2008-01-01 Thread Pierre-Charles David
I've been able to narrow the problem a little more. It seems the actual
line in my .gtkrc-2.0 which causes the problem is the following:

include /usr/share/themes/Clearlooks/gtk-2.0/gtkrc

If I start g-a-p with a .gtkrc-2.0 containing this line (alone or with
the rest of my original file), the bugs triggers every time, and the CPU
goes to 100%. If I overwrite the .gtkrc-2.0 file while g-a-p is hung
with a version without the line, the CPU goes back to ~0%, and g-a-p
exits correctly.

I've attached strace to g-a-p while it is hung, at it seems caught in a
loop. I've attached the fragment of the trace which is repeated
endlessly (I don't know which line can be considered the beginning of
the loop though).

** Attachment added: Fragment of a trace repeated by g-a-p when the bug is
triggered.

[Bug 179672] Keyring manager asks for permission for each object in list

2008-01-01 Thread Pichu0102
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-keyring-manager

When I opened up the Keyring Manager, it popped up dialog after dialog
confirming if I wanted to let Keyring Manager access each item in the
list. I chose Always Allow for each item in the list, and it no longer
does this. However, I think it's supposed to ask once if the keyring
manager is allowed to access the saved things, rather than once each
time for each item in the keyring it's attempting to access.

Bug popped up with 2 wireless access point keys (WEP) and a GNOME
connect to server password saved (SSH) in the keyring. Using Ubuntu
7.10.

[Bug 179552] Re: [Hardy] gnome-session hangs on log in

2008-01-01 Thread Pär Lidén
Ok, I've investigated the problem a little further, and there seems to
be many more people that experienced the same sort of error message with
various versions of gnome, both on fedora, debian and ubuntu, for
example here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=585635page=13,
here http://forums.fedoraforum.org/archive/index.php/t-113359.html, and
here bug: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=456824.

I want to add some things:

- /tmp looks fine
- Gutsy works fine on the same machine
- large amount of diskspace free on / so that is not the problem
- gnome failsafe works equally bad
- I tried waiting over 10 minutes, no difference
- screen just plainly brown, nothing else. but the mouse-pointer works though
- adding another user with adduser and logging in with that makes no difference
- deleting /etc/profile and ~/.* doesn't help
- i did sudo apt-get install --reinstall gnome-session, and then I could login
once. strange. but no success on subsequent logins though. repeating the
re-install helped nothing, so maybe that was just a coincidence.
- I actually managed to log in once more, and checked .xsession-errors. The
same error were there.

I did some strace'ing, and I found this: The two pids reported are
gdmflexiserver.
What is very strange, is that it seems that every time I do an strace of gdm, I
seem to be able to actually log in (but things usually don't work very well
once I'm logged in though). A few times I got in there completely and things
worked. Once I came in there, and firefox and terminal worked, but not logout.
Once I just got an error about nautilus, and nothing more happened.

I also found out that probably this is duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/136529. So sorry if I
caused unneccessary work for you by filing duplicate. Should I paste my
experiences there, or what should I do? Sorry that I could not put all
info in at the beginning, and spams you with many posts...

[Bug 109740] Re: gnome locks up, does not respond to kbd or mouse

2008-01-01 Thread Aanjhan Ranganathan
I am facing similar problems as well. I have a limited keyboard functionality,
mouse pointer moves but does not respond to any clicks. Sometimes by right
clicking several times at several different places on the screen, i get back
the functionality only for sometime. No specific similarity in scenarios when
reproducing!
But yes, most of the times firefox was running. But even after closing firefox,
this lock up re-appeared.

I am using Ubuntu 7.10 with latest updates as of today.

2008-01-01 Thread Julian the flat roof repair/recovering specialist
I get what I presume is the same problem - and often Firefox immediately
crashes and/or the systems hangs up (I don't remember if it's either of
them or both (- it's been a while since I tried it as I don't like to
crash the system unnecessarily, sorry not to be more specific)) when I
try to watch you-tube videos (and others). If I want to watch you-tube I
have to boot in Windows and that feels awful ;)

Thanks for a great OS though - just a 'few' bugs to sort out! Cheers,
Jules

[Bug 179708] evolution tries to set up when unwanted

2008-01-01 Thread Julian the flat roof repair/recovering specialist
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Hi, you know how some companies' email addresses on their website are
not given but they have an 'email us' form to be filled in (- which
usually defaults to the Microsoft email handling program in Windows, or
to evolution in Ubuntu) and sometimes all one wants is the email address
itself for later use, or to be used from yahoo, etc...? When I want to
get this email address and click on the 'contact us by email' part of a
website, all I want is for the form to open so that I can get that email
address - but with the Ubuntu/Firefox, Evolution tries to open its setup
automatically (- and I really don't want to give it mail information as
I don't want it to handle my email at all at the moment - I use yahoo
directly). It appears that without setting up Evolution I will never be
able to see that address. Please can you make it so that either
evolution does not open except to a basic default level such that the
email address (on a blank email form) can be seen, and/or with no
necessity to enter my email details or have it handle my emails?

What I can say is that Windows has never been set up to handle my emails
but when running WIndows I can get that form (with the email address) on
screen, copy that address, and immediately close the form with no more
ado - then use it at leisure or copy and paste it into yahoo.

At present in Ubuntu I don't see a way I can obtain such an email
address without setting up/using Evolution - and that is not desirable.

Many thanks, Jules

[Bug 157622] Re: gdm hangs after login in gutsy

2008-01-01 Thread jtholmes
I have almost the exact same problem with hardy fresh install
hardy daily a/o 1/1/08 also occurred in hardy 12/31/07
dont know about alpha2 did not test it

my equipment
intel 2.6
nvidia fx5200
asus p4p800
1G mem

gutsy and other [K]Ubunus OS's on same machine work fine

all console windows are accessable so
you can kill gdm and all x-session stuff

killed gdm and all X related procs
started X
executed gnome-session
things work this way but logout brings me back to identical situation

X, gdm, gnome-session all are running fine but no gnome desktop
To test further I did the following

moved /usr/bin/gnome-session to /usr/bin/orig.gnome-session
wrote a shell containing the line
strace /usr/bin/orig.gnome-session
killed all X and gdm stuff
restarted gdm
logged in again with my little one line shell in the middle of
gdm and gnome-session and things work perfectly

in my old Unix coding days we referred to this type
of behavior as a 'race condition'
maybe that is what we have here
