I changed the changelog formatting a bit to add the entries from the

don't mind.

Uploaded. Sitting in the queue now.

[Bug 268845] Re: Gnumeric help 100% loads processor

2008-10-02 Thread bs66
i can confirm that with intrepid alpha 6 and gnumeric 1.8.3-3ubuntu2 the
processor is at 100% for a very long time after loading the help file
with help/contents.

however, if you wait long enough it will go back to 0%.

my guess is that the help engine (yelp 2.24.0-0ubuntu1) does some work
with the loaded help file in the background.

i get similar results when loading other help files in yelp.

i am unsure this is a bug. i change from affects gnumeric to yelp.

questions:

can you please confirm that the cpu returns to 0% if you wait for a long
time?

also, do you know if the same problem exists in previous versions of
xubuntu?

[Bug 270523] Re: Rhythmbox fails at starting playback on doubleclick / argument passing

2008-10-02 Thread maleadt
Bug #179110 talks about auto playback at rhythmbox start, I don't think
that is the same as this bug?

Anyhow, thanks for the hint, as I have been able to find out more about
the problem. It seems that trying to play a file (through command-line
options) which does not reside in my library results in (a) nothing, or
(b) playback of the currently selected album in the Music tab. The
same test with a file listed in my library, results in correct playback.
So it depends whether the file I want to play, is already in my library,
or not. As I mostly double-click on new files, this bug gets triggered
quite frequently.

[Bug 226216] Re: Clock applet consistently displays different timezone after reboot

2008-10-02 Thread Ilja
This is still an issue for me and the wrong timezone displays even if I
set it to Europe/Helsinki and then close and reopen the Time and Date
settings window. The wrong timezone (Europe/Mariehamn) is also displayed
after these:

cat /etc/timezone
Europe/Helsinki

sudo cp -v --remove-destination /usr/share/zoneinfo/Europe/Helsinki
/etc/localtime
removed `/etc/localtime'
`/usr/share/zoneinfo/Europe/Helsinki' - `/etc/localtime'

Naturally the wrong timezone is also shown if I open the time and date

That's correct. However, if the user doesn't get the deskbar applet
added,
they don't lose anything they had before. With the changed logout
button,
they are losing functionality they previously had.

Note that this, the most significant issue in my opinion, could be easily
addressed by restoring the lost functionality to the logout button.

If that would actually be easy to do, sure. However, my gut feeling
says it should actually be easier to just pretend that the new f-u-s-a
applet is just the replacement of the old logout applet? It already
provides all the logout/shutdown/etc. options. Ted, do you have a
qualified estimate of how much work either option would be?

I think I'm going to try and be a little verbose here, just to ensure
that we're all talking about the same thing and that others (and perhaps
me) aren't confused in the thread :)

To change the current logout button to show the old dialog, and work
around the GNOME session dialogs would take a couple things. One would
be writing that dialog, though probably most of that would be available
in the previous GNOME session patch. Then it would call GNOME Session
through XSMP with the no GUI option similar to how the FUSA applet
does it today. This would requiring the C code that implements the
panel object that is the logout button.

This is not about how the dialog looks, but the end user functionality in
it. The current upstream Shut Down dialog offers everything we need
*except* the Log Out option, and I would imagine this is possible to add.
Then the logout button could open that dialog.

Is there a technical reason why that wouldn't work?

it would seem that my ability to send e-mail has vanished again, either
originated by me or by replying to a received mail. I am wondering if
setting secure permissions on the user folder to only allow me access,
and barring others in or outside my group access, would have any effect
?

I am running Ubuntu 8.10 with all updates on a pentium 4 box.

cheers

[Bug 274085] Re: Please update Ekiga to 3.00

2008-10-02 Thread Martin Pitt
I wanted to test the ekiga 3.0 packages (thanks Yannick for putting them
together!) However, it seems that the library packages are broken now.
First, a normal dist-upgrade doesn't work:

$ LANG= sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
[...]
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  ekiga libopal-2.2 libpt-1.10.10 libpt-1.10.10-plugins-v4l
libpt-1.10.10-plugins-v4l2 ubuntu-desktop
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 6 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

And a direct install explains why:

$ LANG= sudo apt-get install ekiga:
[...]
The following extra packages will be installed:
  libopal libpt libpt-plugins-alsa libpt-plugins-avc libpt-plugins-v4l
libpt-plugins-v4l2
Suggested packages:
  libopal-plugins-h264 libopal-plugins-ilbc libpt-plugins-oss siproxd gnugk
mediaproxy ser openser rtpproxy
  asterisk yate callweaver libopal-dev libopal-dbg libopal-doc libpt-dbg
libpt-dev libpt-doc
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  libopal-2.2 libpt-1.10.10 libpt-1.10.10-plugins-alsa
libpt-1.10.10-plugins-v4l libpt-1.10.10-plugins-v4l2
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  libopal libpt libpt-plugins-alsa libpt-plugins-avc libpt-plugins-v4l
libpt-plugins-v4l2
The following packages will be upgraded:
  ekiga
1 upgraded, 6 newly installed, 5 to remove and 1 not upgraded.

Yannick, why did you remove the SONAME parts from the libraries? A
shared library libopal is invalid, since it breaks parallel
installability of several SONAMEs (ABI versions), which is necessary for
upgrades.

So we do need newer opal etc. library versions for the new ekiga?

[Bug 274085] Re: Please update Ekiga to 3.00

2008-10-02 Thread Martin Pitt
For the record, I am trying to build the 3.0.0 ekiga source package on
intrepid, but I have quite a lot of difficulties, since there are
several bugs which break the build. The source package itself has md5
mismatches, I fixed the cp * build-gtkonly (trying to copy a directory
into itself), and will probably figure out a solution for the
./configure: not found problem as well (running autoreconf or so), but
it will take a while.

Yannick, it seems you needed a lot of hit it over the head black magic
to actually build this? :-)

[Bug 277044] [NEW] Server window will no longer display itself but the content of the last window opened

2008-10-02 Thread Cristiano
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xchat-gnome

The Ubuntu version is Hardy (8.04) and the xchat-gnome version is 0.18.

After a time (random but so far never been longer than 40 mins) of normal

Is there a technical reason why that wouldn't work?

Doing that would either require to change the upstream dialog to list

upstream we will need to maintain, makes the two system menu entries
irrevelant and makes some user unhappy who like the upstream way better

All of the functions we need are already there. It's just adding an entry
to the dialog. This is a tiny delta.

, makes the two system menu entries irrevelant

No more so than they already are (due to the logout applet and f-u-s-a), or
were in previous versions of Ubuntu (due to the unified logout dialog).

How so? They can still use the menu entries.

There is no need for a new object; users upgrading from Hardy or early

the ubuntu team uses launchpad as a bug tracker but the team is small

fine too the bug will wait there until somebody else does that though

No offense, but it strikes me as a poor practice to mark a bug invalid,

[Bug 276967] Re: no voice

2008-10-02 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems.
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 274146] Re: Desktop items

2008-10-02 Thread Sebastien Bacher

upstream we will need to maintain

All of the functions we need are already there. It's just adding an
 entry
to the dialog. This is a tiny delta.

right, but by doing that you will have the system, closing session and
the shutdown entry list the duplicated actions for example. in this case
does it still make sense to have two entries there?

No more so than they already are (due to the logout applet and
 f-u-s-a), or
were in previous versions of Ubuntu (due to the unified logout
 dialog).

the ubuntu changes were on the gnome-session dialog that GNOME doesn't
use and there was a gconf key which allowed users to use the gnome-panel
upstream dialogs instead

How so? They can still use the menu entries.

you suggest patching one of the dialogs so the menu entries will have
redundant actions, in which case in might not make sense to have several
items listed there

There is no need for a new object; users upgrading from Hardy or early
Intrepid will already have the logout button at the upper right.

right, it you decide to modify the upstream dialogs, in which case no
change is required but we go back to have one dialog rather than two and
then need to change gnome-panel and the other softwares using those

I don't think it makes sense to have two entries there in the first place,
but if you are opposed to removing them, I don't think it's a problem.

No more so than they already are (due to the logout applet and f-u-s-a),

the ubuntu changes were on the gnome-session dialog that GNOME doesn't

If that's a concern, we could make the patch 10 lines longer and still check
the same gconf key. That way, the 5 people who need that key aren't
inconvenienced, but we do the right thing for the other millions of users.

How so? They can still use the menu entries.

I don't consider the redundant menu entries to be as much of a problem as
having one of the most prominent buttons on the default desktop lose most of
its functionality.

2008-10-02 Thread Jim J
I think I found the workaround to this.

1. Open Nautilus
- Places - Home

2. Then, Edit - Preferences

3. Choose the Media tab

4. Choose the appropriate action next to the Music Player item in the Media
Handling session. I chose Do Nothing, personally.

No Rythmn box doesn't launch when I connect my iPod.

It will still start importing music if I start it up, even though I have the
iPod plugin disabled, so I am not sure if this is a complete fix, but the
above workaround at least stops it from automatically launching and
importing the files whenever I connect my iPod.

sent to the upstream bug trackers by the bug triagers but there is lot
of bugs and not so many triager, in such cases it's better if somebody
who has access to the hardware to trigger the bug and cares about the
issue could send it upstream directly, if you don't want to do it that's
fine too the bug will wait there until somebody else does that though

[Bug 277087] Re: Evolution crashes whenever the view pane is enabled and whenever a message is selected for viewing.

2008-10-02 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instuctions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be
dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch
nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on
the crash report you wish to submit.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.
