[Bug 292498] [NEW] power icon will not change status when pulling the plug

2008-11-02 Thread Jet
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

The version of Ubuntu I'm using is 8.10 Intrepid. The package (that has
the bug) that I'm using is 2.24.0-0ubuntu8. My laptop is HP Compaq
Presario V5000. The package that I found the bug is gnome-power-manager.
The icon is part of Notification Area 2.24.1 of the panel. I expected
that when I pull the charger, the icon will change status in a second.
What happened instead is that it takes 10 or more seconds to change the
status of my computer that it is running on AC power or a battery. When
take the charger out, it will not change status until 10 or more
seconds. When I plug it back to the laptop, it does the same thing. When
I click shut down or restart, it show a message that gnome-power-
manager is running.

[Bug 292504] [NEW] Use embedded icons for executable files

2008-11-02 Thread Scott Ritchie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

A new thumbnailer program for Windows Executables should be added to
nautilus in order to display their embedded icon. I am unsure if .msi
files need similar functionality. The icoutils program can already do
this, however we just need to call it in the right way.

There's also a brainstorm discussion, with a script that seems
promising:

[Bug 292508] [NEW] baobab fails to start, segmentation fault

2008-11-02 Thread Sergey Burnevsky
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-utils

I had a problem with baobab, it reported disk usage totally incorrect:
for a ntfs volume of 20G with only 1G free space it reported only 3.5G
used, totally missing some files (.iso, disk images). Read some other
bug reports about wrong total disk size reports and how people solved
problems by unchecking gfs in settings. Didn't have same thing here and
just tried to uncheck all the boxes there.

Baobab crashed and doesn't start anymore. In CLI I get Segmentation fault and

[Bug 292512] [NEW] Gnome System Monitor crashes when clicking on File Systems tab

2008-11-02 Thread kripkenstein
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

Gnome System Monitor always crashes when I try to switch to the 'File
Systems' tab. This is on a new installation of Intrepid.

When run from the commandline, the output is as follows:

$ gnome-system-monitor

** (gnome-system-monitor:1888): WARNING **: SELinux was found but is not
enabled.

(gnome-system-monitor:1888): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: IA__g_object_get_valist:
property `name' of object class `GThemedIcon' is not readable
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::logic_error'
  what():  basic_string::_S_construct NULL not valid
Aborted

The SELinux warning is probably not related, it appears before I click
on File Systems and it crashes.

This bug has a similar name to bug 244903 and bug 260474, but from
reading those the underlying cause seems different, so I'm filing this
as a new bug (I hope I did the right thing, sorry if not).

Going back to GNOME's mouse preference, then manually selecting right-
handed, then left-handed again indeed fixes it. Of course, it requires
the mental gymnastic of using the wrong button to get to that
configuration menu. It also does nothing to automatically restore left-
handed after resuming.

[Bug 292519] [NEW] gnome-display-properties: External monitor's correct resolution not listed.

2008-11-02 Thread Murray Cumming
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu Intreprid I can now actually use a second monitor to increase
my desktop space, using the gnome-display-properties UI. This didn't
work in Hardy. However, the listed resolutions for the external monitor
are incorrect. It does not list the ideal 1280x1024 resolution for this
Dell 1704FTP LCD, connected via VGA.

It does list a not-supported 1360x768 resolution, which it does not
list for the laptop screen, so it is at least listing different
resolutions for the 2 screens.

[Bug 292523] [NEW] The contents of SMB server do not appear in Nautilus main pane.

2008-11-02 Thread euda
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I use Buffalo Linkstation as Samba server. I can use SMB connection with
Ubuntu 8.04.
Yesterday, I updated Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10. Accordingly, Gnome and Nautilus were
updated.
In the representations,
smb:// server name / sharing point / directories ,
server name and sharing point appear in left pane of Nautilus with unmount
button. Also, on desktop, the icon of server name @ sharing point
appears. However, the right pane of Nautilus, no contents will appear
including file name nor directory name.
I guess one thing about the version of Samba server. The version of Samba of
said Linkstation is fairly old. Is there any missing of compatibility to old
version of Samba according to upgrade of Gnome and Nautilus?
Another point I found is the status of ~/.gvfs. Without no connection, the
status is,

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ls -laF | grep vfs
dr-x-- 2 euda euda 0 2008-11-02 17:12 .gvfs/

Once try to connect Samba server, the status is,

$ ls -laF ~/
(snip)
d? ? ?? ?? .gvfs/
(snip)
$ cd ~/.gvfs
bash: cd: /home/euda/.gvfs: Transport endpoint is not connected

is this any reason of this failure?

thanks.

[Bug 292565] [NEW] smb://host bookmark not opening from places menu [regression]

2008-11-02 Thread Andrea Ratto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

software involved:
Ubuntu Intrepid, gnome-panel version 1:2.24.1-0ubuntu2

to reproduce:
1: use nautilus to browse a samba server's shares list. For example
smb://localhost
2: add a nautilus bookmark to that location
3: open the new bookmark trough the gnome places menu
(also drag the new icon on the panel and launch it from there to get the same
result)

result:
An error message about the impossibility of opening the position and no
application registered to handle that file.

expected result, as it was in Hardy:
a nautilus windows as in step 1 to reproduce.

what works:
opening the bookmark from the bookmarks menu in nautilus,
bookmarking a share on a host (e.g. smb://localhost/share)
opening the same URI from the command line (e.g nautilus smb://localhost)

As a side note, I keep not understanding why gnome-panel must use an
internal format for some launchers like logout and those in places.
This makes them not moveable/draggable on the desktop. There should be
almost only .desktop files that execute commands, it's really this
simple. A bookmark in the places menu would just execute nautilus $URI
and that would not trigger a stupid little bug like this one.

[Bug 292564] [NEW] nautilus crashes [segfault] on copy-paste when language is Basque

[Bug 292554] Re: intrepid: nautilus ftp transfer crashes

2008-11-02 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal
with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report
a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport
in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.
I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 260109] Re: key up opens gnome-screenshot

2008-11-02 Thread Soenke
Hi,

I stumbled upon this bug with thinkfinger (fingerprint reader from
thinkpad) enabled in /etc/pam.d/common-auth:

authsufficient pam_thinkfinger.so
authrequisite pam_unix.so try_first_pass nullok_secure
authoptionalpam_smbpass.so migrate missingok

This was like it looked in hardy. After reenabling it in 8.10 the
arrow-up error occured.

After restoring the config, the error disappeared.

Since the fingerprint reader registers as virtual keyboard it could be
related somehow ...

[Bug 292512] Re: Gnome System Monitor crashes when clicking on File Systems tab

2008-11-02 Thread kripkenstein
Sebastien,

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but all I see after following the
instructions for getting a backtrace is a debug symbols package for
gnome-system-monitor 2.22, not 2.24. So I can't install it.

I received a warning about a missing public key during the update
process, perhaps that is related? The wiki instructions don't mention
anything about handling that.

If this is an upstream choice, it's a very very BAD choice! This is a BUG! A
very annoying bug. This worked very well in Ubuntu 8.04.1, and now in Ibex it
isn't comfortable to use. If developers wouldn't like to fix this, give a
workaround or an option to restore the old functionality.
If developers change everything familiar function what the users using
everyday, the things are going the wrong way with gnome...

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 43572 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/43572

Same problem as in the previous two comments. Brightness applet still
works to adjust brightness (as it did in 8.04) but now (after installing
8.10) does not show the brightness percentage when hovered over -
instead displaying cannot get laptop panel brightness.

(Straight after login, the applet shows the correct brightness of 100%
but as soon as the slider is adjusted the problem presents itself.)

This does not seem to be a duplicate of #43572. The problem did not
exist until 8.10 was installed and also, in this case, is affecting a
Sony VGN-FS315M laptop not a Dell.

[Bug 292601] [NEW] Never resume last used project by default

2008-11-02 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

One of the features that makes Brasero so easy to use is that screen it
greets you with, in which it asks you which type of disc (data, audio,
video, copy disc, save image) you want to work on.

Sadly, Brasero seems to try and use the last open project when you
launch it from apps → audio and video → brasero.

For example:

1 - Open apps → audio and video → brasero. You get the project menu.
2 - Click on video project.
3 - Close Brasero and open it again. You get the project menu again, which is
good.

But:

1 - Open apps → audio and video → brasero. You get the project menu.
2 - Click on video project.
3 - Add a video file to the project.
3 - Close Brasero and open it again. It will use the recent video project,
which is bound to confuse users who might want to burn a different project and
not know how to do it.

Brasero should ALWAYS default to the project menu when opened, unless
called through a specific option (brasero -a to open a new audio
project, etc).

OK, strangely the image converter options have now appeared. I am not
sure what happened (many reboots later) - I did not notice exactly when,
but after filing the bug report and reading around, particularly about
the post-install script, I reinstalled image-converter via Synaptic and
the options now appear in the context many on right click. So far so
good. So this bug can be closed, since I can't reproduce it or do
anything else with it any longer.

The set as wallpaper option has also appeared now.

However, the script collecion is still missing.

Maybe I should open a bug on that issue

[Bug 292574] [NEW] Totem flickers

Binary package hint: totem

When on full screen, the movie played by totem flickers! Also... the
subtitle is desynchronized with the movie/sound, i.e. there is a delay
between what was said in the movie and what line from subtitle is
displayed.

Totem was always shitty! I was never able to play a single movie with a
subtitle in Ubuntu's shitty totem! Why do I always have to search
through a lot of forums to find a solution? Is Ubuntu some problems
collection?

I always use in W*ndows mplayer and it's MPUI Gui and i never had a
single problem! Why, on Earh, a Linux, open source app works so damn
good in that shitty Wind*ws?

Is that hard to remove this horrible media player or just to make it
just work Is that so hard to make that shitty subtitle load by
default, without that user google-ing to find how on Earth could a
subtitle be loaded

I can't offer you a screenshot or so!

[Bug 274630] Re: GDM crashes after restart

2008-11-02 Thread Chris
I have not posted for a while because I was waiting for the release. I
have just put the 8.10 release live cd in the drive and started the
installer and it has done the same thing. Obviously the installer does
not use the gdm, instead just an application in X so I think we can
presume the bug is actually in X.

There is still nothing of note in the X logs before the system crashes,
and I cannot get at the logs after the display has frozen because there
is no way to remotely access the box.

[Bug 292508] Re: baobab fails to start, segmentation fault

[Bug 260492] Re: opening a directory using an application change associations incorrectly

2008-11-02 Thread david_kt
Got the same problem here, upgraded today (Nov 02), directory was open by
mplayer. I thought it was problem with mplayer, I remove Mplayer and directory
opened by Movie player. Then I realise it was file association problem as the
menu use xdg-open.

In addition to put back the right association, I have to clean up many
unrelated program in open with as well, for example mp3 file open with text
editor etc.

[Bug 292526] [NEW] nautilus does not preview NEF images

2008-11-02 Thread Jan Rüegg
Public bug reported:

Nautilus does not preview my NEF (RAW-) images. It does preview all the
other images (png, jpeg, ...), and I can also open the NEF images with
gthumb (full image) or eog (small (preview?) - image).

I tried rm -r .thumbnails and installed the gnome-raw-thumbnailer, but
both did not help.

But, strangely, as soon as I have opened one of the images in eye of
gnome, then that (and only that) image gets previewed.

Seems like eog creates a thumbnail of the nefs when opening them, but
nautilus does not by default.

I'm runnung an up-to-date (backports) Intrepid.

[Bug 275086] Re: brasero crashed with SIGSEGV in brasero_project_save_project_as()

2008-11-02 Thread Vincent Law
Hello,

I feel concerned by this bug as I'm not able to save any project in brasero
without a segmentation fault, by now.
Having followed the link provided just bellow though bugzilla I can see that a
correction has been made in version 0.8.3
Is it planned to update soon the currently installed version of brasero into
U8.10 ?

[Bug 292611] [NEW] Never change window size because of the preview

2008-11-02 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

If you resize brasero's window to make it as small as possible, then
select a video file (which triggers the preview pane) brasero's window
is automatically made bigger. This does not look very elegant in my
opinion.

If the preview pane is active, even if it's not shown because no file is
selected, Brasero should take it into account (consider how big the
window must be to show the pane) and not let the user make the window
smaller than that.
