[Bug 373096] [NEW] [jaunty] screen brightness level on battery power unsteady and too dark
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager Since I updated to from hardy to jaunty, the behavior of the screen brightness on battery power is strange. On unplugging, the overall brightness goes down (expected), but cannot be brought up to the level without battery power (unexpected). I can still use the hotkeys to adjust the brightness, but the intervall is in a lower range than on AC power. Furthermore, with a period of about one minute, the brightness goes down even further, bringing it the brightness to a level, where it is impossible to work, even with the brightness set to maximum. In the dark periods, the minimum setting seems to turn off the backlight completely, while maximum is a bit brighter, but still unusable. Then after about a minute it goes back to the brightness of only some levels below AC power, but usable, after a minute dark again and so on. A similar behavior is described in two bugs: For one bug 284550. However, in contrast to that report, I have the problem only when running on battery power. Additionally, it says in that bug report that a fix was released in gnome 2.24.4, but I still have the problem working in gnome 2.26.1. Bug 325789 describes the same behavior also only on battery power, but it claims that it doesn't occur any more in jaunty. Therefore, I decided to file a new bug report. I am working on a Samsung X20 with intel graphics chipset. btw.: how do I link other bugs? ** Affects: gnome-power-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [jaunty] screen brightness level on battery power unsteady and too dark https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/373096 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 373096] Re: [jaunty] screen brightness level on battery power unsteady and too dark
Actually, it is not always switching to the cyclic mode. This time, the screen went black right after unplugging, and I could bring it with the hotkeys to a level at which it was barely usable in a completely dark room. However, it did not become brighter by itself this time, as described above. Here is the output of lshal -m during unplugging, using the hotkeys to see at least a little bit on the screen and replugging. ** Attachment added: lshal.log.txt http://launchpadlibrarian.net/26423099/lshal.log.txt -- [jaunty] screen brightness level on battery power unsteady and too dark https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/373096 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 371533] Re: gnome-session not starting after jaunty upgrrade
another bunch of tests. Right after boot I tried a normal gnome session login. The session did not start at all (screen went blank and the gdm login screen reappeared). psax_after-gnome-session-autologout is the ps -ax after this. .xsession-errors_gnome-session-autologout is taken at this point. I started a gnome session in the same way and this time I got an apparently good screen (panels with applets, icons, ...) but absolutely non-functional (not even refresh after vt switch); only the mouse pointer was working. I killed the session with sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop. psax_after-gdm_stop is the ps -ax at this point. notice a lot of zombies and some strangely duplicated tasks. I tried to start a gnome session once more (after a sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start, obviously) and this time I got the Your session... error message. psax_after-gdm_start_and_login_with_error is the ps -ax at this point. .xsession-errors is taken at this point. I then rebooted and used the terminal-login+manual-gnome-session to get to a somewhat working status and write this. This status is *not* fully functional and I see in the terminal whwe I started gnome-session things like: (firefox:3902): GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager: Could not open network socket. ** (update-notifier:3837): DEBUG: /usr/lib/update-notifier/apt-check returned 0 (security: 0) ** (update-notifier:3837): DEBUG: crashreport_check ** (gnome-terminal:4011): WARNING **: Failed to connect to the session manager: Could not open network socket Completely reinstalling this Laptop is (unfortunately) not an option. [Bug 337780] Re: cpu frequency scaling monitor does not change frequency in Ubuntu Jaunty (9.04) alpha 5 on Core 2 system
The problem is not with the Gnome frequency scaling applet. I used the cpufreq-selector command and it doesn't change the frequency either. I managed to get some reaction yet, by switching the ACPI daemon and related on and off quickly. Then, sometimes, for a few seconds, the frequency will decrease as was requested. Then it will rise back to maximum a few seconds later. I monitored the frequency change with this dumb loop, that shows a time increase to perform the inner loop: while : ; do time { for (( b=0 ; b1 ; b++ )) ; do b=$b ; done } ; echo $a ; done Just in case, I removed the Gnome applet... this didn't change anything to the problem. By the way, the cpufreq-selector takes seconds to react. And doesn't change the frequency. To me this is a major bug: - My battery autonomy has decreased below what I need to do my job. - I'm working in libraries. The fan switching on and off to cool the highclocked CPU is disturbing for me and for people around me. I'm writing this comment in the local cafeteria because I don't dare go to the library with this faulty laptop. - My CPU radiator is accumulating dust. I'm using a HP dv6000 laptop with Intel processor; dv6415eb to be precise. -- cpu frequency scaling monitor does not change frequency in Ubuntu Jaunty (9.04) alpha 5 on Core 2 system https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/337780 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-applets in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 373136] Re: Terminal crashes when UTF-8 is removed as character encoding
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit. If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash- file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. [Bug 373243] [NEW] The amount of 'Total sent' data wraps around at 4GB
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor This is related to the closed bug #284423 (the reporting user didnt follow up the report). It looks like 'Total sent' (or received) amount of bytes is kept in a 32bit variable and is wrapped around each ~4GB sent (2^32 bytes). You will never see total sent larger than 4GB. When the wrap happens you can see the transfer rate graph go to zero for a moment. Caused probably by using the wrapped variable in calculating speed (prev = 4GB, new =0 = speed negative). Changing the counter to 64bits should be a temporary fix. In the long run some kind of bignum is needed (or decrease resolution and count the amount of kB transmitted, or MB, GB). Leaving it as is makes the counter quite useless especially as you can achieve gigabit speeds on networks today it deasnt take long to exceed the 4 GB transmitted data. This is all speculations as I didn't look at the source, but it seems quite clear to me. Happens in all versions of gnome-system-monitor (including the one in 9.04). ** Affects: gnome-system-monitor (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- The amount of 'Total sent' data wraps around at 4GB https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/373243 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-system-monitor in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 207072] Re: nautilus does not display samba shares for machines inside an ADS network.
I have tested the gvfs and nautilus packages in hardy-proposed. Here are the problems I found (they are essentially the same described some time ago in the upstream bug report: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=524485#c57 In virtualbox running ubuntu 8.04.2: When the machine is not joined to an AD domain (LAB), opening the Network Servers icon puts me in network:///, showing the Windows Network icon. Clicking on Windows Network I enter smb:/// but nautilus reports: 0 objects Inserting manually smb://LAB/ in the location bar I am asked for a password and after inserting the credentials of a domain user I can access the list of the machines. Share browsing can be done without problems. When the machine is joined to an AD domain (LAB) and I login as a local user the situation is as described above. When the machine is joined to AD domain (LAB) and I login as a domain user (with kerberos ticket), opening the Network Servers icon puts me directly in smb://LAB. Share browsing can be done without problems (but this was also possible without the patched gvfs). So, with the proposed packages there are problems in browsing the Windows Network (smb:///) with machines not joined to an AD domain or in the absence of kerberos tickets. From the normal user point of view, this situation is probably worse than before. -- nautilus does not display samba shares for machines inside an ADS network. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/207072 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
