Re: [Bug 446748] Re: evince assert failure: EvinceDocument:ERROR:ev-file-helpers.c:67:ev_tmp_dir: assertion failed: (exists)

2009-10-21 Thread Graham F
My mount statements include
none on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw,nosuid, nodev)
none on /var/run type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,mode=0755)
none on /var/lock type tmpfs (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev)
tmpfs on /mnt/tmp type tmpfs (rw,noatime,size=300M,nr_inodes=10k,mode=1777)

so I'm guessing (as I can never remember the syntax here) that my tmpfs
is also a shared mem device (or is this saying shared mem is also
mounted as tmpfs?)

Brian Rogers wrote:
My tmp was a symlink to /dev/shm. That appears to be what it doesn't
like. If /tmp is a normal directory, or a tmpfs is mounted directly on

[Bug 456646] Re: dvd are not playing at normal speed

2009-10-21 Thread Robert Ancell
If I use playbin it seems to work much more reliably, failing about one
time in 20 for me. However if I choose a chapter instead of the DVD
default it seems to be as unreliable as playbin2. Perhaps some IO delay
in starting is causing it to get behind and never catch up?

likewise I think it started yesterday for me. it looks like the most
recently updated gstreamer package is gst-plugins-good0.10, from Monday:

gst-plugins-good0.10 (0.10.16-1ubuntu3) karmic; urgency=low

  * backported debian change:
  * debian/patches/000{1,2}-equalizer*.patch:
+ Patches from upstream GIT to fix equalizer in stereo mode and
to use better filters for the first and last band.
  * debian/patches/00[1-20]-pulse*.patch:
+ Patches from upstream GIT to improve PulseAudio plugin and fix
some major issues, like decreasing the volume after every track
  in some cases.
  * debian/patches/70_latency_update_returns_null.patch:
- the change is in the new version

[Bug 456979] [NEW] Rhythmbox has trouble with burned cds

2009-10-21 Thread hanzomon4
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Whenever I tried to play a burned cd Rhythmbox locks up. If I restart it
it plays but if I pause it and then try to resume playback a few minutes
later it locks up again. One time this cause Rhythmbox's memory to
balloon out of control and lock up my desktop. It got up to using a
whole gb of ram.

[Bug 456980] [NEW] gedit hangs for 60 seconds when inaccessible share mounted

2009-10-21 Thread tliebeck
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

gedit will hang for exactly 60 seconds under the following conditions:

1.) An inaccessible SFTP share has been mounted using Nautilus.
2.) gedit is open on a desktop other than the current one.
3.) The Applications-Accessories-Text Editor panel menu item is selected.

Requirement #1 is likely the only real requirement to trigger this,
and it may not even be limited to SFTP shares. I'm including the
additional information because it results in repeatable behavior.

Unmounting the inaccessible SFTP share will cure the issue and cause
gedit will begin working properly. I'm encountering this issue because
I use a share which is on a laptop which I tend to leave asleep except
when I'm transferring files to/from it.

Nautilus and most everything else seem to be unconcerned about the
inaccessible share.

This is the solution to make pulseaudio produce a themed beep instead of
the system beep:

I haven't had to do this manually before, but something broke in my

responsibility it normally is to get this information into PA.

Bernhard [2009-10-20 23:11 -]:
   input.xkb.variant = 'nodeadkeys,'  (string)

Oha! Where does the comma come from? I don't think that X.org/gdm
digest that properly. Can you please remove the comma from
/etc/default/console-setup, XKBVARIANT=..., and check that it works
then? How did you configure the layout on installation?

Thanks, Martin

[Bug 456996] [NEW] gvfs iPod error -- VFS: Can't find a valid FAT

2009-10-21 Thread johnny b
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

Description:Ubuntu 9.10
Release:9.10
Linux shine-karmic 2.6.31-14-generic-pae #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 16 15:22:42 UTC
2009 i686 GNU/Linux
gvfs:
  Installed: 1.4.1-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 1.4.1-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 1.4.1-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://uk.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Plug in iPod (nano and 120Gig classic) get these errors in dmesg:
[ 6005.480448] VFS: Can't find a valid FAT filesystem on dev sdb1.
[ 6259.618242] FAT: invalid media value (0x2f)

Ipod mounts on desktop ok, but can't be used in songbird, banshee,
exhaile, any iPod manager except for rhythmbox. Nautilus browses ipod
directory fine.

fdisl -l /dev/sdb shows:
Disk /dev/sdb: 2047 MB, 2047868416 bytes
248 heads, 62 sectors/track, 260 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 15376 * 512 = 7872512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x20202020

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb1 1 11 80293+ 0 Empty
Partition 1 has different physical/logical beginnings (non-Linux?):
 phys=(0, 1, 1) logical=(0, 1, 2)
Partition 1 has different physical/logical endings:
 phys=(9, 254, 63) logical=(10, 111, 8)
Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary.
/dev/sdb2 11 261 1919543+ b W95 FAT32
Partition 2 has different physical/logical beginnings (non-Linux?):
 phys=(10, 0, 7) logical=(10, 111, 15)
Partition 2 has different physical/logical endings:
 phys=(248, 247, 62) logical=(260, 31, 61)

sdb1 is the iPod's Operating System and GVFS is attempting to mount it,
i believe. sdb2 is the vfat partition where the music lives.

mount shows:
/dev/sdb2 on /media/JBB-POD type vfat
(rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=devkit,uid=1000,gid=1000,shortname=mixed,dmask=0077,utf8=1,flush)

If I unmount the ipod (/media/JBB-POD) and then mount it manually:
sudo mount -t vfat -o
rw,user,nosuid,nodev,uid=1000,gid=1000,shortname=mixed,dmask=0077,utf8=1,flush
/dev/sdb2 /media/ipod/

Everything is fine. It can then be used by all iPod managers (songbird,
banshee, etc).

I dualboot with Janunty (9.04) and everything is fine when iPod is
mounted automatically.

[Bug 384833] Re: After locale change, default folders duplicate, crash when changing settings

2009-10-21 Thread Fionn

The problem disappered with the latest Evolution version in Jaunty. The
duplicate folder disappeared. There still is another problem as now the default
Persönlichl Adress book is no longer duplicate and can be renamed. But after
a restart of evolution the name flips back to the default name Persönlich
(aka Personal). But I guess that is another bug to be reported elsewhere.

No it shouldn't, because then the root user would appear in the list of

Re: [Bug 436804] Re: when I have only one mp3 file in the player and activate endless playing, he plays only once, with 2 mp3 files endless playing works fine

2009-10-21 Thread Rolf Reintjes
Hello Pedro,

endless playing.. is that the repeat mode?

Yes, that is repeat mode.

  i've tested this with karmic
and it works fine for me. could you test the same with a karmic live cd
or installation and comment back? thanks.

I have tried to test it with 9.10 Beta Live CD. Totem does not have a
plugin to play mp3 files. Searching for the needed plugin fails. I
cannot test it with the live CD.

At the moment I do not want to install 9.10 Beta.

Best regards

Very odd that in karmic it seems to work. Maybe it is something specific

seems to work with gfvs. I'll do a couple of more tests, to other samba-

2009-10-21 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
MichaelEvans: Your bug was about a use case that we don't consider as
valid. There are other means of achieving the same thing (password-less
account), which we consider as better for everyone. So I could mark your
bug as Invalid, or as a duplicate of this one, which should also allow
you to do what you want. If you don't like that, I can remove that, but
that does not really matter.

2009-10-21 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
That's something we can definitely do in the next release, as we're
going to redesign the interface. Fine-grained permissions should be
hidden in a separate dialog, people should only choose the profile. Not
sure about the colors, but at least a bold label, maybe an icon too.

Can you elaborate on the top slanted descriptions? I can't get your
point here.

[Bug 457047] [NEW] Files and folders deleted on a Samba network share don't appear at all in Trash window

didn't ask me to empty the Trash like in previous release). I think this

[Bug 457043] [NEW] Totem (gstreamer) works only for one playback and then freezes (audio).

2009-10-21 Thread federico.biasibetti
Public bug reported:

When I play something with totem (audio or video, compressed, I haven't
tried DVD), the first file in the playlist is reproduced correctly. When
the first one is finished though, the audio freezes, and comes back only
after a long time (it seems proportional to the length of the file). The
totem gui remains responsive, and I can load other files in the playlist
or remove them, but nothing will play; no error messages are displayed.
If I play video files instead of audio, the video is played correctly
every time, but not the audio, and at the end of the video the image
stalls, waiting for the audio stream. If I leave it there the audio
finally arrives, and when it has finished it goes to the next video with
the same behaviour.

The problem wasn't there a few updates ago (not more than a week).

[Bug 446783] Re: Karmic Login (single user) requires Enter input before password.

2009-10-21 Thread Christian Göbel
This bug is not a duplicate!

Bug #447049 is on not being able to choose the user with the keyboard which
is a completely different issue (that is solved by now).
Also bug #447615 is on a different issue Karmic Login Screen displays username
by default - this is a different concern with respect to the visibility of
user names.

This bug report actually suggests the following enhancement request:

If and only if there is only one (single) user on the system,
then automatically select this user in gdm (equal to select the user AND
hitting enter)
such that the password of the single user can be entered immediately without
hitting enter before.

Current behavior on a single user systems (in gdm):
a. Hit enter
b. Enter password
c. Hit enter again

Requested behavior on single user systems:
b. Enter password
c. Hit enter

This bug could be a candidate for 100 paper cuts

[Bug 457063] [NEW] [karmic] Session is not saved properly

2009-10-21 Thread Mozg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-session

Karmic Beta1 updated on 20 Oct 2009. Session is not saved properly. As a
test, i've opened a Firefox browser and 7 Terminals. I've also created
15 workspaces. Each terminal has been placed in its own Workspace. I've
saved my session and logged out. When I've logged back in, the Firefox
has opened in the correct work space. However, the Terminals have been
opened all over the place. Out of 7 terminals, only 2 have been opened
in the correct workspace.

Karmic has been installed from a live DVD on a clean HD.

menu. No such menu anymore in Karmic. gnome-power-cmd script has been
removed and gives this, if a copy of it is used, when running gnome-
power-manager:

Suspending / Hibernating
Error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name
org.freedesktop.PowerManagement was not provided by any .service files
Failed

It works fine with xfce4-power-manager.

[Bug 77010] Re: Overuse of system beep without volume control

2009-10-21 Thread Janne Hyötylä
Martin:

Muting the beep control in alsamixer solved my problem.

Previously the volume of the control was set to 00 but it was not muted,
and this produced the ugly and extremely loud beeps (especially on
headphones).

I don't know whether I have ever changed that control. But I installed a
fresh karmic during Alpha 3 and have upgraded since then.

[Bug 457063] Re: [karmic] Session is not saved properly

2009-10-21 Thread Chris Coulson
That's not really a gnome-session issue. Applications are responsible
for saving their own state, and telling the session manager how to
restore them. Were these terminals gnome-terminals?

[Bug 457084] [NEW] evolution-data-server-2.28 closed unexpectedly opening contacts

2009-10-21 Thread rfurgy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Release: Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic
Version: Evolution 2.28.1

Was going into contacts to add a contact.

Upon navigating to the contacts section of Evolution I get an error message.
Sorry, the program evolution-data-server-2.28 closed unexpectedly

I ran a debug on it and reproduced the error. Will attach it.

[Bug 457047] Re: Files and folders deleted on a Samba network share don't appear at all in Trash window

2009-10-21 Thread Roberto Colnaghi
I don't know, I simply upgraded my Pentium 4 (32 bit) from Jaunty (with
all updates) to Karmic, amongst other annoyances this was the worst.
Simply, the trash doesn't show deleted files on my network share on the
Samba server, although the files regularly end up in
share/.Trash-uid/files and associated metadata in
share/.Trash-uid/info. gvfs-ls trash:/// gives the same result.
Maybe it is worth noticing the share is mounted with CIFS (not with
automounting in Nautilus, which I believe uses smbclient).
